By Phil Hecken, with James Huening
First off. A note of apology to Jeremy Brahm, with whom I had collaborated on a HUGE post for today. Somehow…and I’m not sure how…I ended up deleting an ENTIRE post — and his portion is simply too long to recreate now (as I type this, it’s close to 11:30 pm, Saturday night). I can and will recreate, as best as possible, the rest of what I had prepared (that includes the Worst Uni Ever, Benchies, Guess The Scoreboard, Ducktracker, and 5 & 1) … but the NFL uni mocks and Jeremy’s portion will have to wait. Again, my deep apologies to Jeremy (he’ll vouch for me — I sent him the full mockup of his piece earlier this week). Sorry, buddy, I’ll get to it soon!
Now then, at least I can still bring you the final voting from the Worst. Uni. Ever. poll on which James Huening (my wingman) had provided all the legwork and assistance. So, without further ado, here’s James:
Here are the eagerly-awaited results for our poll to determine the worst uniform ever worn in (US and Canadian) sports.
9) The Orlando Thunder (1991-92) collected a mere 2.47% of the vote.
8) Gathering 3.23% of responses were the San Diego Padres (1978).
7) 4.38% of you thought the Toronto Raptors (1995-99) were the worst ever.
6) The green glare of the Seattle Seahawks (2009) was disliked the most by 5.43%.
5) Our last finalists to collect less than 10% of responses were the Vancouver Canucks (1978-85), who were chosen by 8.78% of respondents. (OK, the uni had some slight modifications during this time period, but the overall design stayed basically the same.)
4) The University of Oregon Ducks football program (2006-2008) was selected 11.18% of the time.
3) 13.42% of the vote went to the Chicago White Sox (with shorts – 1976).
2) With 22.26% of the vote, the Tucson Toros (1980) were our early favorites and they jumped out to a commanding lead over our eventual #1…
1) …The Caribous of Colorado (1978) who made a valiant comeback to take the top spot with 28.83% of responses collected
Full results can be found here.
Once again, thanks to everyone who participated. And more than 5,100 of you did, which was nearly double the turnout of our previous survey. I wonder if the mention in SI.com’s Hot Clicks had anything to do with that.
Thank you James (and thank YOU to everyone who participated). We’re going to keep polling you guys, but James needs a little break. His fingers are all cut up from counting all the ballots, and those hanging chads were a biotch to figure out. Hopefully, it didn’t affect his curling skills.
Congratulations to The Caribous (sic) of Colorado. You simply had the Worst. Uni. Ever.
Boy…Mick’s on a roll these days in Bub’s Pub. And when there’s no ladies around on which to work his magic, well — he gets sage advice on the ladies.
Enjoy your Sunday Benchies
Guess The Game From The Scoreboard: Back to baseball today, and this is an oldie but a goodie from SlimandSlam. I’m pretty sure the difficulty level on this one is quite high, but I also believe the clue you need is right there on the scoreboard. Put on your thinking caps for this one. Guess The Game. And if you want to keep this going through the fall, please send me some new scoreboards! Drop me a line. Thanks!
UW #1 Seahawks Fan Michael Princip has been tracking the Oregon Ducks and all of their 2,456 possible uniform combinations this season. He’ll be updating it after each game. The Ducks were resplendent in school colors — black and steel are school colors right? And, they were taking Arizona State behind the woodshed (31-7 as I write this). So
Here’s Your Updated Ducktracker.
Our man in the street, Jim Vilk, brings you his “Top 5″ Best and one WORST college football uni matchup from yesterday:
5. LA Tech/LSU — Love those stripes!
4. Nebraska/Kansas — Normally I like white pants with white-helmeted teams, but the Huskers are a great exception.
3. Iowa/Ohio State — Big Ten teams may be overrated, but these unis aren’t (Oh, and the ANF sticker stands for “America Needs Farmers).
2. VMI/Army — I salute this classically cool matchup.
1. Tennessee/Ole Miss — Another white-helmeted team that doesn’t need white pants, and another title for the SEC.
And the worst matchup: Virginia Tech/Maryland — At least the Terps were saluting REAL warriors.
Thanks again Jim. But I’m gonna have to “Go Off The Boards” with the worst uni pick — and this photo doesn’t even begin to do it the injustice it deserves: TCU vs. Utah. Honorable mention could probably go to Oregon vs. Arizona, but Arizona didn’t look too bad.
OK, that’s gonna do it for today. Two legacy games (the Bills visit the Titans Oilers in the early game, while the late game features the Chiefs Texans at the Raiders).
And to all the New York City-and-environs denizens, don’t forget today is the UW Gathering at Sheep Station in beautiful Brooklyn. 2:30 till whenever. Hope to see you there.
Everyone have a great Sunday!

Damn, I thought the Tucson Toros were a lock to win.
Mr. Princip, the Duck Tracker needs to be updated to show the yellow outline on the numbers and yellow swoosh on jersey and pants. Also, Masoli at least was wearing green/black cleats with yellow laces.

OK, before someone complains that we don’t have any pictures of the actual uniforms and we just went with the logos, here are links to the posts with the “preliminary rounds.” These posts feature plenty of photos of the unis in question.
Round 1: the original nominees.
Round 2: the nine finalists.

Good Morning, Stuby…I haven’t seen you around in some time.
I am gonna catch hell for this, but if anyone knows how to wear monochromatic black, it’s the ducks. They looked great last night.
Why haven’t they worn their current green tops with yellow pants or vice versa?
And where is the carbon helmet, are they keeping that under wraps for the civil war?
Masoli is wearing a team exclusive Nike Speed TD.
BTW…Army is very underrated in the uni-world. Perhaps if they were thought of as a D-1 school, they might get some respect.

re: AFL TEMPLATES FROM YESTERDAY.
“Remember the Titans’ Sleeve Stripes”
Well, now, see, I thought about changing all the sleeves to 3/4 on the FUPP template for a real “vintage” feel, but figured it was a “low value” effort because it woudn’t matter one way or another.
Well, it DID matter because—as TimmyB pointed out—it means the ‘61-’62 NY Titans sleeve end stripes got left out. He’s right, I forgot all about them. Got seduced by the template.
Just goes to show you, trust you instincts. Had I changed the sleeves, I’d almost surely have remembered to add the extra stripes to the Titans.
Anyway, here are the Titans ‘60-’62, with proper sleeve trim.

I have been, as long as I can remember, a fan of Mississippi’s unis. Yes, I know know the elements dont’ seem to match (esp. back with the helmets were royal blue), but that’s kinda part of their eclectic charm.
Anyway, the Tennessee-Ole Miss uni matchup featured today got me to thinking of the days of non-logos, full loops and numbers on the chest, not the belly.

Did you miss the “Ut Prosim (That I May Serve)” on the back of the Hokie’s pants or on the gloves? Yeah, that would be the slogan of the VT Corps of Cadets, one of 2 senior military colleges in the country that have a military program embedded within a larger civilian university. Whether or not you liked the jerseys, we were giving a nod to some real warriors whom we brush shoulders with every day.

Tell you what…the PSU-Indiana game had a nice clean look about it. The Hoosiers really looked sharp with a great looking red helmet with two white stripes and a white “IU” in the sides. Clean looking white unis as well.
While on PSU, some years ago in the blue-white game, I’m thinking late 80’s-early 90’s, the PSU helmets were pure white, without even the lonely blue stripe. I heard tell (can’t verify if true or not) that JoePa was contemplating going with a plain totally unadorned white helmet for that season and wanted to use the scrimmage as a test run to see how it looked. I guess it was too plain for even JoePa, so they returned the blue stripe back to its rightful place.

White Knoll High School here in South Carolina changed their logo this year with a new coach. there are two really odd things about it:
1. The ‘W’ is the rap group Wu-Tang’s logo.
2. Some helmet stickers are circles, some are ‘T’s and they are all different sizes.

Ah, if only IU’s level of play could improve the way that their uniforms have. Their current set is so far and away better than the BFBS (and possibly NASCAR-inspired) eyesores of the Cam Cameron era.
Blowhard though he may be, Bob Knight was right to rip Cam for dressing his team in one of Purdue’s colors. (If indeed that conversation actually took place.)
I know they catch some grief for having a look that’s really similar to Oklahoma, but the unis are essentially a modernization of the ones their only Rose Bowl team wore. And if you’re going to draw inspiration from the past, that’s probably the era you want to look at.
Plus, I mean c’mon, two stripes and a crimson facemask for the Hoosiers vs. no stripes and a white facemask for the Sooners. That’s a world of difference.

Yikes – is there a hidden statement of Canadian passivity in the worst uni list. Of the nine uniforms listed, the two that had the greatest longevity, were worn by Canadian teams, is this indicative of the Canadian proclivity, to be quiet and reserved, and not to complain? Most of the worst of list – were quickly abandoned, with these notable exceptions
As the list includes “one and done” – I’m somewhat surprised that the Dallas Mavericks silver abodimination did not make the list

This might be “innovative”. But is it GOOD?
Colts with “Temple” look. Better if still in Maryland, with it rich horse racing history (hence the name “Colts”), though, cuz looks a bit like racing silks.
Probably should have TVs on shoulders, per league rules. And the royal jersey would have white sleeves and the same side panel, to match the white pants home and road.
Helmet? Maybe a single white stripe to harkback to the ’50s.

I did have an “I can do that” moment of sorts by bringing along my camera. Instead of depending on a paid and highly-skilled photographer to show me pictures of the game, I took some myself. Been doing that at other games this season and had a blast.

however, one uni that, had it been worn before the worst uni ever list was complied, surely would have been a nominee was the tcu frogs…seriously…reptile skin? bloodlines on the helmet? black epaulettes?

Maybe I’m in the minority on this, but I liked TCU’s unis last night better than their usual ones. Better number font, and they didn’t have those annoying little triangles around the collar and sleeves.

When I was in college, TCU had for many years worn silver helmets and pants with purple jerseys, so I assumed those were the team colors. In that case, last night’s uniforms were actually closer to the proper team colors than the black jerseys they wore this year, with the gunmetal-lizard skin being closer to silver than black. If they had gotten the helmet to match the lighter color of the pants, I think it would have been a definite improvement.
Besides, they used to make football pants out of beige canvas, which isn’t anyone’s team color.

I am watching the Dolphins-Buccaneers game today. First of all, I hate seeing Miami in all-white at home. It just bothers me to see them backwards in their color scheme/selections.
But as for Tampa Bay, these pewter and red uniforms really “pop” with their vibrant colors. The colors are rich, compliment each other, and aren’t overloaded with those “bumperstickers”. I’m liking them even more today. They showed highlights of last week’s creamsicles, and while those were unique, they don’t stand out as much as these current ones do. The old ones just aren’t vibrant enough. They are certainly classics in uni-lore, but the current ones are one of the NFL’s best, in my opinion.

You’re absolutely right. And I should have stated it that way. And they were really GOOD at losing, too. The Irish that year won, what, two games I think.

Looked like a great time, kids! Wish I could have been there… although they probably didn’t serve any Canadian beer. LOL
UW Winter Classic is coming up in January in Minnesota. There are some interesting offers of events that are going on that weekend. If you’re interested in going, I’m going to start coordinating this event next week. I’ll let you all know what the options are, and what we’re doing for hotels/events/etc.

wow, I just saw those Colts’ shoulder “loops”, and they look terrible. At least Manning’s go down a bit, but that defender’s stripes are like less than a foot long.

For everyone who thinks the Atlanta Falcons look bad, get a load of the defending CFL champs, the Calgary Stampeders: http://static.cdn.mr...
So it’s the Stamps and Riders in the west, while BC goes to Montreal for the eastern final. Please please please let it be a throwback Grey Cup.

Hey Jim Vilk, the Big Ten is NOT overrated. It’s the SEC that’s overrated. The conference is a joke and the unis are a joke. The Big Ten is filled with classic, traditional unis that stand the test of time while the SEC is filled with a bunch of clown acts. AND, if you’re going to mention the ANF sticker on Iowa’s helmet, show a picture where you can see it.
The games you pick. What is your criteria?? Week in and week out you pick some of the worst unis in college football and call them great uni matchups. Colored facemasks? White cleats? Dopey color schemes? Overdesigned unis that the Nike machine continues to crank out? Maybe you need to do a article telling us how you decide on these Top 5 uni match ups. And to the classic question I know you are asking, “oh, and you can do better?” Yes, I can do better.

What made the Oregon Ducks so hideous this weekend were the helmets’ matte finishes. (Or was that eggshell?)

Black cleats inherently good. White inherently evil. Okay, got it.
Anything else that would automatically disqualify a uni from looking good…before you’ve even seen it?
Hate orange? Purple? Green?
Not defending The Selector. He has said in the past what his preferences are, no secret about them. And, while he does generally favor traditional gear, he still picks his fair share of “crazy newbie one-offs,” so he certainly doesn’t deserve to be categorized in one camp or the other.
Do I agree with him all the time? Hell, no. From a straight color standpoint, Miami at North Carolina was a great watch on Saturday…but the Hurricanes “cut paper” graphics just don’t seem to get much love here, and the game got no mention one way or the either.
But, hey, if he wants to pore over all those game photos every Saturday, good for him. Lotta work. And it gives us something to talk about.

Thanks for commenting. It’s good to know you’re reading.
Just a couple of things: first, both the Big Ten and the SEC have their share of classic and forgettable unis. They both get noticed in the Top 5…more than I would like. I’d like to showcase other conferences as well, but not at the expense of a classically great matchup.
Second, you must be a new reader, because the ANF sticker gets mentioned and/or shown every week in the comments. Ricko usually answers the inevitable question about it, so I just beat him to the punch this time. Sorry for forgetting there are infrequent or first-time readers.
As for the teams I pick, it’s basically whatever catches my eye. I never ever ever proclaim this to be THE Top 5 list, just MY Top 5 list. Why are my choices featured? Because Phil asked me to do it. He and I have different tastes in unis, but he knows I take this seriously and, as Ricko said, I go through a LOT of photos every Saturday.
To be honest, I don’t pay much attention to facemasks and cleats. Too minute of a detail for me. The helmet, jersey and pants are my main focus, followed by the socks. Big details, like Miami’s graphics, do make a difference. Number fonts, striping, piping and other similar features take precedence over facemasks and shoes for me. But that’s just me.
If you’re not a new reader, you would know that I routinely ask people to suggest matchups and provide photos. Almost no one does, so it’s my pick. Now if Phil wants to open up the Top 5 to other people, that’s his call. Just make sure you go through as many photos as I do and don’t just select five Big Ten matchups every week.
Finally, three letters, Hoolie – B. C. S. Get a conference title game, win some Rose Bowls and we’ll talk. And I’m a Penn State (and sort of Michigan) fan, so it pains me to say it, but yes, the Big Ten is overrated.
