Did you know there’s a clinical condition characterized by a fear of vegetables? It’s true! It’s called lachanophobia, which would make a great name for my blog if I hadn’t already chosen “Uni Watch.”
All of which makes a good introduction to today’s very protein-centric content, which stretches across several platforms. Think of it as a three course meal: The appetizer is a piece written by reader Aaron Rich, about a ballpark food ritual called “eating for the cyle.” And the dessert is a new ESPN column about team-themed tailgating.
As for the main course, it’s time to check out the photos from last Sunday’s Brooklyn Beefsteak, which was pretty damn epic. Look at all those lachanophobiacs! Sorry, I’m like a kid with a new toy now that I’ve discovered that word. I’ll try not to overdo it.
Anyway: The organizers bought half a steer, so there were many different cuts being served: mini-burgers, ribeye, short ribs, hanger steak, you name it. The meat was cooked on the sidewalk right in front of the venue and then sliced, plattered, and served, all in a rather frantic fashion.
I gave a short presentation on beefsteak history also had a small onstage role with the mighty Susquehanna Industrial Tool & Die Company, holding up a few signs to cue the audience during their stirring rendition of “The Song of the Beefsteak” (written especially for the occasion, don’tcha know).
I wasn’t the only one wearing a Meats tee, by the way — Uni Watch reader Terence Kearns had one too (and lived up to it). But my favorite outfit was the one worn by this guy. What uniform is that? America West baggage handler, as it turns out.
Women were barred from beefsteak participation back in the day. But the fairer sex was well represented at the Brooklyn event, thanks to attendees like Kirsten, Baroness Karen McBurnie, Aaron Rich’s pal Shawna, and, especially, this chick. Never did get her name, but she definitely took the award for best apron.
I could go on, but you get the idea. If you want to see more, check out my photos or, better yet, this guy’s photos, which are the best ones I’ve seen so far.
(Big thanks to Kirsten for several of the pics, plus the salad monster illo, plus-plus the lachanophobia story, and apologies to Scott Turner and all other vegetarians.)
In non-meat news: Tim Brulia’s “White at Home in the NFL” page has been updated to reflect the first half of this season.
Because, y’know, why not?: In our continuing quest to take up as much useless internet bandwidth as possible, this site now has its own Facebook page, which you can sign up as a “fan” (or, more likely, be blocked from access because you’re at work). Meanwhile, you can also sign up for the Uni Watch Twitter feed, whoop-whoop! Watch for more exciting — okay, pointless — things to sign up for soon!
’Tis the Season: Got any cool sports-related gift ideas? Know of any companies producing interesting uni-ish products? If so, speak up, because I’m about to start working on my annual holiday gift guide column for ESPN and am very open to suggestions.
Oh, and if anyone remembers the details on that company with the expensive hand-made footballs that I linked to a week or two ago, please fill me in, because I can’t remember the name of the company and can’t find the link. Thanks.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The Green Bay Gamblers (USHL) are conducting a create-a-jersey contest for kids. No word on whether this is devaluing the market rate for child designers. Details in this PDF download (with thanks to Philip Caldwell). … Hey, look what’s being auctioned off! … But that’s nothing compared to this. … Mea culpa for not having mentioned the Habs’ recent 1910-11 throwbacks, which looked my-t-fine on Tuesday night. … Here’s a modest proposal: Let’s get rid of football helmets altogether (with thanks to Jim Vilk). … Went thrifting over the weekend and picked up this varsity jacket. Love the two-tone pocket, the leather UCLA stripes, and the rear lettering. … While I was grabbing that jacket, Kirsten got this awesome ice skating scarf. Great illos, as you can see more clearly in this larger photo. … Fucking amazing electric football video here (with thanks to Chris Markham). … Again with the No. 55 riflery jersey. I’m now getting seriously spooked by this. … Buffalo WR Brett Hamlin has “BAWB” on his neck bumper. “According to a post on his Facebook page, it stands for ‘bad ass white boy,’” reports Dennis Abrams. … Check out this gumball helmet set. Never seen that goalpost display system before (with thanks to Brinke Guthrie). … Cool painting showing Reds uniforms through the years — download it here, and read more about it here (with thanks to Steven Wyder and Ryan Connelly). … There’s still time for you to vote in Phil’s “Worst Uni Ever” poll, which was the top link yesterday on SI.com’s “Hot Clicks” …See, this is why I live in NYC. Where else could you see Orly Taitz picketing Fox News? Try finding entertainment like that in Peoria, you rubes!

My college roommates and I did something like “eating for the cycle”. In the 999 Club, a person has to eat 9 hotdogs and drink 9 16 oz. beers in 9 innings. I think we got the idea from a story Kenny Mayne did one time. You pray for long innings or it’s practically impossible.

New stadium not a reason for new unis, unless you suck and are trying to usher in a new era. Twins have won division five times in last eight years, and came close to making it six.
So maybe just remove the road pins and now screw around with anything else? Please?
http://farm3.static&....
—Ricko
Sorry, man, but that’s just wrong. The Twins have one of the few instantly recognizable looks in baseball: Pinstripes, red script, navy cap. (Setting aside the crapfest of alts the team wears.) As long as the Twins keep that basic formula — pinstripes, red script, blue cap — they’ll be fine.
Ditching the road pinstripes deviates from that formula, so that would be a mistake on its face. It’s like saying, “Hey, Yankees, drop the home pinstripes!” Bad move. Plus, the Twins first wore road pins at the same time that the Yankees first wore home pins. It’s irrational to oppose the one but favor the other, especially since road pins, by darkening the uniform, actually make road uniforms fulfill their actual function of differentiating teams better than unstriped road grays.
Also a bad move: the more-than-rumored red-billed road cap. It not only breaks the Twins core visual identity, it closely resembles the distinctive blue crown, red bill caps worn by the division rival Cleveland Indians.
If the Twins drop the road pins and wear the Cleveland caps, it would be exactly analogous to the Yankees dropping the home pinstripes and making their cap logo red with a white outline. If a Yanks fan wanted to root for a team that looked like that, he’d move to Boston. Likewise with the Twins: If I want to root for a team that looks like that, I’d already be an Indians fan.
Ricko replied…
I agree with you. I like the road pins, largely because the Twins reintroduced road pins, and several other imitated it.
I only took them off to placate some who hate them, and to see what it might look like. And you’re right, while it turned out to be an elegant look, it’s also WAY too homogenized. Ditto for the red bill road cap.
I dont’ want them to change a damn thing…but I’m afraid they’re going to.
Well, actually, they could wear the blue alts less often. That would be okay with me.

Exactly what I meant. Obviously there are big differences — the Yankees have worn home pinstripes almost continuously since WWI, whereas the Senators/Twins use of road pinstripes came and went in early years and then was not revived until 1987, but the historical precedent is there. And the span of 1987-present covers 23 seasons, which is a very long run for a baseball uniform these days.
That’s significant continuity of identity, with historical antecedents just as old as the Yankees, so the issue of the Yanks pins at home and the Twins pins on the road really is a goose/gander situation.

OK, I’ll give you the 23-year run in road pins. Add the fact that they won the World Series the same year that they introduced them and then another one a few years later as enough of a reason to stick with them.
Bringing the 1912 Senators into the discussion is a bit of a stretch, though. That’s like arguing for the Orioles to go to a brown and orange color scheme to tap into some kind of St. Louis continuity.

thanks for the clarification scott
like james said, the 23 year run (and two world series titles) is plenty enough reason to keep with them; my confusion stemmed from what i thought was the comparison of the iconic status the yankees have achieved due to their 80 plus year run wearing them on the homes and the rather specious claim that the twins (who only moved to minnesota in 1961, and didn’t adopt the road pins until 1987) use of them were comparable

More to the point, I think, is that in 1987 the Twins re-introduced the vintage-look Road pins as a regular uniform to MLB for the first time (by anyone) in, what, 60-70 years? So that was a bit innovative. Others followed so they don’t get any real props.
Are the Twins road pins distinctive because of that? Hell, yes, they are. Like them or not, they ARE distinctive. The others who wear (or did wear) them just picked up on something Twins re-started: Angels, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Reds…(I forget anyone?)

Normally, there is the standard base design (colors, striping, numbers and nameplate), which allows them to get the jerseys prepared for play way before the day of reveal, and then the design appears to be screen-printed on a tackle twill square which is then applied to the jersey (since many of the designs would be rough for normal chest-logo treatments).

Just wanted to add something to Richard Craig’s comment regarding the Sharks uni-numbers and this is regarding the New Jersey Devils and their uni numbers.
Devs GM Lou Lamoriello has long hated high “training camp” numbers. In recent years the Devils forwards have all been assigned numbers below 30, Martin Broduer’s number. Well this year, due to injuries and flu the Devils have placed so many guys on IR and called up so many replacements that they have basically run out of numbers for a call up. Every number between 1 and 30 has been assigned except 1, 3, 4, and 13. 3 and 4 have been retired by the Devils for Ken Daneyko and Scott Stevens respectively. The number 1 has pretty much been exclusively a goalie’s number in the NHL and the Devils don’t issue 13 to anyone.
Long backstory to lead to this, the Devils called up blue line prospect Matt Corrente yesterday, and since no “issuable” number under 30 is currently available he has been practicing with no number! He is not slated to play in any games (he seems to be around in case the flu bug takes down another defenseman) so his numberlessness isn’t a problem right now. Still though, this is about as opposite as you can get from the Sharks situation.

Eating for the cycle:
With what they charge at the ballpark these days, I couldn’t do it. The closest thing I did was back in the 80s, when footlongs at Cleveland Municipal Stadium were a buck or $1.50. I’d eat my height in footlongs (okay, I’m 5-10, but I’d round up and eat six).
I’d rather tailgate now. I feel bad not supporting the vendors as much (since I used to be one at the Coliseum), but I try to get at least one small thing from them and give a decent tip.

The Plymouth Whalers of the OHL also do the low number only thing. Here is a quote from a story on their website:
The Whalers adopted their current numbering system when the time the team moved from Detroit to Plymouth. In the early days of the Plymouth franchise, the Whalers – known first as the Detroit Ambassadors (1990-92) and then the Detroit Jr. Red Wings (1992-95) – were allowed to wear high numbers. Sean Haggerty (91), Nic Beaudoin (93), Duane Harmer (55), Kevin Brown (44) and Shayne McCosh (77) are prime examples.
But that’s changed.
“We adopted 1-through-40 13 years ago,” Baron explained. “We feel we don’t need the high numbers here in Plymouth – we’re more about the front of the sweater and not the back of the sweater. We figure 1-through-40 with the exception of 14 (Pat Peake’s retired number) are plenty of numbers for the players to choose.”

not saying you guys are incorrect, just seems unlikely given the color schemes they’ve released so far (which would indicate white vs. color matchups)

But at the time I loved the vested Mazeroski ‘60 World Series set. Still do.
But the mustard/old gold hat set—Roberto Clemente’s last uni—keeps growing on me as the years pass. Something different for those new-fangled doubleknits, and the socks certainly were unique, with the mustard/old gold top and black bottom with a single, slightly wide white stripe.
I’m sort of pre-desposed to favor anything worn by Clemente. As highly rated as he is, he is still one of the most underrated players of all time.
So it’s a tossup between those two.
