Did you know there’s a clinical condition characterized by a fear of vegetables? It’s true! It’s called lachanophobia, which would make a great name for my blog if I hadn’t already chosen “Uni Watch.”
All of which makes a good introduction to today’s very protein-centric content, which stretches across several platforms. Think of it as a three course meal: The appetizer is a piece written by reader Aaron Rich, about a ballpark food ritual called “eating for the cyle.” And the dessert is a new ESPN column about team-themed tailgating.
As for the main course, it’s time to check out the photos from last Sunday’s Brooklyn Beefsteak, which was pretty damn epic. Look at all those lachanophobiacs! Sorry, I’m like a kid with a new toy now that I’ve discovered that word. I’ll try not to overdo it.
Anyway: The organizers bought half a steer, so there were many different cuts being served: mini-burgers, ribeye, short ribs, hanger steak, you name it. The meat was cooked on the sidewalk right in front of the venue and then sliced, plattered, and served, all in a rather frantic fashion.
I gave a short presentation on beefsteak history also had a small onstage role with the mighty Susquehanna Industrial Tool & Die Company, holding up a few signs to cue the audience during their stirring rendition of “The Song of the Beefsteak” (written especially for the occasion, don’tcha know).
I wasn’t the only one wearing a Meats tee, by the way — Uni Watch reader Terence Kearns had one too (and lived up to it). But my favorite outfit was the one worn by this guy. What uniform is that? America West baggage handler, as it turns out.
Women were barred from beefsteak participation back in the day. But the fairer sex was well represented at the Brooklyn event, thanks to attendees like Kirsten, Baroness Karen McBurnie, Aaron Rich’s pal Shawna, and, especially, this chick. Never did get her name, but she definitely took the award for best apron.

My college roommates and I did something like “eating for the cycle”. In the 999 Club, a person has to eat 9 hotdogs and drink 9 16 oz. beers in 9 innings. I think we got the idea from a story Kenny Mayne did one time. You pray for long innings or it’s practically impossible.

Sorry, man, but that’s just wrong. The Twins have one of the few instantly recognizable looks in baseball: Pinstripes, red script, navy cap. (Setting aside the crapfest of alts the team wears.) As long as the Twins keep that basic formula — pinstripes, red script, blue cap — they’ll be fine.
Ditching the road pinstripes deviates from that formula, so that would be a mistake on its face. It’s like saying, “Hey, Yankees, drop the home pinstripes!” Bad move. Plus, the Twins first wore road pins at the same time that the Yankees first wore home pins. It’s irrational to oppose the one but favor the other, especially since road pins, by darkening the uniform, actually make road uniforms fulfill their actual function of differentiating teams better than unstriped road grays.
Also a bad move: the more-than-rumored red-billed road cap. It not only breaks the Twins core visual identity, it closely resembles the distinctive blue crown, red bill caps worn by the division rival Cleveland Indians.
If the Twins drop the road pins and wear the Cleveland caps, it would be exactly analogous to the Yankees dropping the home pinstripes and making their cap logo red with a white outline. If a Yanks fan wanted to root for a team that looked like that, he’d move to Boston. Likewise with the Twins: If I want to root for a team that looks like that, I’d already be an Indians fan.

I agree with you. I like the road pins, largely because the Twins reintroduced road pins, and several other imitated it.
I only took them off to placate some who hate them, and to see what it might look like. And you’re right, while it turned out to be an elegant look, it’s also WAY too homogenized. Ditto for the red bill road cap.
I dont’ want them to change a damn thing…but I’m afraid they’re going to.
Well, actually, they could wear the blue alts less often. That would be okay with me.

Just wanted to add something to Richard Craig’s comment regarding the Sharks uni-numbers and this is regarding the New Jersey Devils and their uni numbers.
Devs GM Lou Lamoriello has long hated high “training camp” numbers. In recent years the Devils forwards have all been assigned numbers below 30, Martin Broduer’s number. Well this year, due to injuries and flu the Devils have placed so many guys on IR and called up so many replacements that they have basically run out of numbers for a call up. Every number between 1 and 30 has been assigned except 1, 3, 4, and 13. 3 and 4 have been retired by the Devils for Ken Daneyko and Scott Stevens respectively. The number 1 has pretty much been exclusively a goalie’s number in the NHL and the Devils don’t issue 13 to anyone.
Long backstory to lead to this, the Devils called up blue line prospect Matt Corrente yesterday, and since no “issuable” number under 30 is currently available he has been practicing with no number! He is not slated to play in any games (he seems to be around in case the flu bug takes down another defenseman) so his numberlessness isn’t a problem right now. Still though, this is about as opposite as you can get from the Sharks situation.

Eating for the cycle:
With what they charge at the ballpark these days, I couldn’t do it. The closest thing I did was back in the 80s, when footlongs at Cleveland Municipal Stadium were a buck or $1.50. I’d eat my height in footlongs (okay, I’m 5-10, but I’d round up and eat six).
I’d rather tailgate now. I feel bad not supporting the vendors as much (since I used to be one at the Coliseum), but I try to get at least one small thing from them and give a decent tip.

The Plymouth Whalers of the OHL also do the low number only thing. Here is a quote from a story on their website:
The Whalers adopted their current numbering system when the time the team moved from Detroit to Plymouth. In the early days of the Plymouth franchise, the Whalers – known first as the Detroit Ambassadors (1990-92) and then the Detroit Jr. Red Wings (1992-95) – were allowed to wear high numbers. Sean Haggerty (91), Nic Beaudoin (93), Duane Harmer (55), Kevin Brown (44) and Shayne McCosh (77) are prime examples.
But that’s changed.
“We adopted 1-through-40 13 years ago,” Baron explained. “We feel we don’t need the high numbers here in Plymouth – we’re more about the front of the sweater and not the back of the sweater. We figure 1-through-40 with the exception of 14 (Pat Peake’s retired number) are plenty of numbers for the players to choose.”

So I’m watching the Thursday Night Football pregame on NFL TV and when they cut to the field I noticed that the 49ers are using one of those inflatable helmet entrance gimmicks. Unfortunately the helmet appears to be last year’s black and dark red color scheme rather than the updated 2009 version. Get with the program, inflatable helmet entrance prop department!

I’m sort of pre-desposed to favor anything worn by Clemente. As highly rated as he is, he is still one of the most underrated players of all time.
