Brothers and sisters, I am excited to announce that reader Zac Neubauer has made a remarkable discovery, to wit: Noted soft-porn magazine National Geographic, in addition to photographing all those adorable naked tribespeople, has published a surprising amount of high-quality sports imagery over the years. Really! Many of these photos are very much in the Uni Watch wheelhouse, and Zac has generously combed through the NatGeo archives to compile them for us. Let’s take a look:
• Zac knows I like bowling, so he made sure to include these shots of Indian pin boys and a Vermont pin factory.
• I’ve previously run photos of the space-suited Astrodome groundskeepers, but I’ve never seen pics of the Orioles base-sweeper girls before. Note how Mark Belanger and the broomstick have similar builds.
• And speaking of sweeping, there is soooooo much to like in this curling photo. Additional curling goodness here.
• If not for the caption, I might not have noted the white glove being worn by this Japanese umpire. Jeremy, Mark, and all you other Japan-knowledgeable folks out there, was it once standard practice for umps to go white-gloved? Only plate umps or also base umps? Details, please.

• Hey, there’s nothing like a friendly ballgame to inspire a lighthearted caption.
• Can anyone fill us in on the game being played here?
• What’s better than a movie at the drive-in? A football game at the drive-in!
• Okay, there are more surreal elements to this shot than I can count. The funny thing is that there’s a guy around the corner from me who looks exactly like the batter. Sits out on his stoop every day and grumbles about this and that. Not sure if he bats right-handed, though.
• This is quite possibly history’s greatest girls’ basketball team portrait, wouldn’t you agree?
• This pond hockey shot is amazing. Love how so many of the kids have matching sweaters (except the one at far right has the colors reversed) and how two of the others have nearly matching plaid shirts.
• Soap box derby! Nuff said.
• Whoa — that’s some gorgeous setting for a soccer field. Zac says the uni number is “a Persian ‘2.’”
• Here’s something I’d never seen before: motorball (i.e., soccer on motorcycles), complete with uniforms and numbers.
• Here’s a fairly early shot of the Little League World Series, before TV cameras ruined it. The guy at lower left is Little League founder Carl Stotz.
• Lovelovelove the saturated colors in this hockey photo.
• Okay, so this has to qualify as one of history’s weirdest relay races, no?
• I hope he’s saying, “Hey, kid, pull up your left sock.”
• Here’s an interesting Westinghouse ad extolling the virtues of night baseball.
• Coke has had lots of great sports-oriented ads over the years, but this one is particularly nice.
• Maybe they’ll dust off this ad for the pigthrax scare.
• There’s something really beautiful about the angles and composition of this NHL shot.
• Who are these starstruck lasses? The Pee Wee Reese Fan Club, of course!
• As we head for the home stretch, it turns out that awesome striped socks and adorable tribespeople can coexist. Isn’t that heartening?

This picture was from 1959 or 1960. The gloves worn by the umpires are similar to those that are worn by taxi drivers. I think that it is a way to keep the umpires from getting their hands dirty. (You eat a hamburger with a napkin in Japan, not with your hands. I am still used to eating with my hands when I am there.)
Maybe it was an opening day game, so there is some pomp and circumstance to it?

The Orioles base-sweeper girls get some attention in one of the World Series films from 1969, 1970 or 1971, when after they are done sweeping the bags one of the girls playfully taps a player or coach with her broom.

Push-Ball is an outdoor team game invented by Crane of Massachusetts in 1894. It was introduced into Great Britain and played at the Crystal Palace, London in 902, but never became popular. The games is played by two teams each of eleven players divided into forwards, right wings, left wings and goalkeeper. The goalposts are 18 feet (5.5 meters) high and 20 feet (six meters) apart with a crossbar at the height of seven feet from the ground. The ball used is six feet (180 cm) in diameter and weighs 50 lb (about 23 kg). The playing area measures 140 yards by 50 yards (about 128 meters by 46 meters). Pushing the ball under the bar scores five points, eight points are scored for throwing the ball over the crossbar. A variety of push-ball was played at military tournaments in London during the early 20th century, and there were national teams, England and the USA for example competed at Headingley in August 1902.

In 1990, National Geographic had an issue dedicated to minor league baseball. IIRC, many of the photos were taken at the Dudley Dome in El Paso (with the ballfield on the cover of that magazine).

Last first. Dane, you are correct about that fabulous hockey foto. Definitely, magnificently Quebec City. That’s the Hotel Frontenac looming above all. Plus the walls, the cliffs, the Saint Lawrence… One of the greatest settings in North America… One of the youths is wearing a Canadiens sweater; the others seem to be sporting the late great sweater of les Ases du Quebec (Quebec Aces).
And then Pushball. I was all set to provide chapter and verse until I saw the customarily authoritative submission by Jeremy Brahm. It’s unfair, I think, since Jeremy probably lives on the other side of the International Date Line, and so it’s still yesterday or it’s already tomorrow or something.
Back when Ricko and I were growing up, pushball definitely enjoyed a worldwide vogue. Haven’t seen it since the early 1960s, though.

That Broncos concept jersey is absolutely fantastic. 100% better than any of the individual uniforms they’ve ever worn. My only suggestion is that, if they ever wear something like this, the socks must be swizzled. Do that, and these would be the perfect uni set for that team.

Regarding the soccer game in Iran/Persia:
I have rarely seen uniform characters (as opposed to Arabic numerals) like this. Anyone know when FIFA mandated numerals 0-9 for international and club play?
Also, “Pennsylvania State College” is we all know today as The Pennsylvania State University. The name was changed in 1953.

Maybe the white gloves are worn to symbolize that the umpire’s hands are “clean”…that he’s not favoring either team. Also white gloves symbolize professionalism.

Uniform violation costs Bulls title
The Hereford boys cross country team was celebrating a championship one minute and relinquishing it the next.
The No. 8 Bulls appeared to have won their second consecutive Baltimore County title Monday, but one of their runners was disqualified after the race for a uniform violation. After the scores were recalculated, the team title went to Towson (49 points), while Hereford (57) slipped to third behind host Dulaney (54).
In the girls competition, Dulaney edged Hereford for the team crown.
The Hereford runner who initially finished fourth in the boys race was cited for wearing black compression shorts underneath his uniform pants that had visible white stitching. That violates Rule 9, Section 6, Article 1b of the National Federation of High Schools rule book, which states: “Items displaying seams stitched on the outside of the garment in a visible contrasting color to the undergarment will be illegal beginning with the 2009-10 school year.”
“They can take the plaque away, but they can’t take away the race,” Hereford co-coach Jason Bowman said. “Our kids ran great today.”

Remember thinking it was a pretty good idea, but probably would never fly in U.S. baseball. Us having a tendency to get all knotted up about our masculinity the way we do, I couldn’t see American umps ever agreeing to wear white gloves. Too much like a mime. LOL

I believe WaMu is part of JP Morgan Chase and they’ve kept the name. Similar to what they’ve done with National City Bank since the PNC transaction. The tagline has been “National City, now a part of PNC”. Although in a week, the NCB name will begin to be phased out as the full conversion starts. Whether or not WaMu will eventually do this is unknown to me at this time.
Push ball makes me think of something: as I have been doing research at a local library branch, in the 70s, I see standings for a game called fieldball. Does anyone have any idea what this might have been? My brother was born in ‘69 and he doesn’t remember it.

I like those Broncos uniforms. The vertical stripes look a lot better in orange and blue than brown and yellow. Vertical stripes seem to work best with one bright color and one muted color.

That oversized ball game “push-ball” as the earlier post calls it, I believe it has been played in USA. My dorm at University of Michigan had a lot of old photos of IM sports on the wall, and it included some old photos of coed games being played with a large oversized ball being held over some sort of scrum. The photo looked identical to that NatGeo photo. If I had to wager a guess, the photo dated back to the 1940s.

We played pushball in High School in the mid 70’s. It was a kick on the butt! Huge ball that people were bouncing off of, falling down getting rolled over. It was a gas.

I think I have found an answer for the white gloves.
Like many Japanese workers, Gough is wearing white gloves as a sign of respect and cleanliness.
This was taken from an article about Mazda releasing their new RX-8 as a convertible in January 2008. Malcolm Gough is an Australian, but the head of Mazda.

Quick thing to say about Ben Traxel’s Broncos concepts: I find it as a rule of thumb for concepts that it’s not a good idea to mix ‘n match logos from different eras on the same uniform. It just seems like it’s trying to be too much to team’s fans. I notice White Sox, Brewers, Astros concepts seem to be big fatalities of this as well.

My brother is a huge Expos/Nats fan, and last year I framed all of the patches ever worn on the uniform of the Nationals (but I don’t include each of the All-Star game patches, b/c that just becomes too much). I don’t need to see it on the left shoulder, left side of the head, right side of the head, and right shoulder — that many times. I try to do something different. I was at the Cavs game tonight and have a few uni notes (no pics, sorry):
1. The Cavs wore their standard (wine) road unis, so the Celtics were in white.
2. More interestingly, the dancers’ uniforms had the Mark Price-era ball in hoop logo on the chest, but in the Cavs’ third jersey color scheme. They were blue, with the wordmark in gold with a wine outline. Think they’ll sell that jersey along with the wine and gold palette throwback?

We played that game in elementary school gym class with more or less those rules, but we called it “cage ball”. This was in Westborough, MA in the late 1960’s. (We also did calisthenics to “Go You Chicken Fat Go” records, but that’s another story entirely. Good ol’ Mrs. Cavanaugh…)

WHOA! AMAZING Broncos uni mock-ups.
I’m a HUGE Denver sports fan and those have everything I love about our unis through the years.
Only correction I would make: Put the “D” on the helmet and the new logo on the sleeves. The D needs to be on the helmet… period. And the new logo would look pretty amazing on the sleeves.
