Brothers and sisters, I am excited to announce that reader Zac Neubauer has made a remarkable discovery, to wit: Noted soft-porn magazine National Geographic, in addition to photographing all those adorable naked tribespeople, has published a surprising amount of high-quality sports imagery over the years. Really! Many of these photos are very much in the Uni Watch wheelhouse, and Zac has generously combed through the NatGeo archives to compile them for us. Let’s take a look:
• Zac knows I like bowling, so he made sure to include these shots of Indian pin boys and a Vermont pin factory.
• I’ve previously run photos of the space-suited Astrodome groundskeepers, but I’ve never seen pics of the Orioles base-sweeper girls before. Note how Mark Belanger and the broomstick have similar builds.
• And speaking of sweeping, there is soooooo much to like in this curling photo. Additional curling goodness here.
• If not for the caption, I might not have noted the white glove being worn by this Japanese umpire. Jeremy, Mark, and all you other Japan-knowledgeable folks out there, was it once standard practice for umps to go white-gloved? Only plate umps or also base umps? Details, please.
• Check out the lower photo here — indoor miniature golf!
• Hey, there’s nothing like a friendly ballgame to inspire a lighthearted caption.
• Can anyone fill us in on the game being played here?
• What’s better than a movie at the drive-in? A football game at the drive-in!
• Okay, there are more surreal elements to this shot than I can count. The funny thing is that there’s a guy around the corner from me who looks exactly like the batter. Sits out on his stoop every day and grumbles about this and that. Not sure if he bats right-handed, though.
• This is quite possibly history’s greatest girls’ basketball team portrait, wouldn’t you agree?
• This pond hockey shot is amazing. Love how so many of the kids have matching sweaters (except the one at far right has the colors reversed) and how two of the others have nearly matching plaid shirts.
• Soap box derby! Nuff said.
• Whoa — that’s some gorgeous setting for a soccer field. Zac says the uni number is “a Persian ‘2.’”
• Here’s something I’d never seen before: motorball (i.e., soccer on motorcycles), complete with uniforms and numbers.
• Here’s a fairly early shot of the Little League World Series, before TV cameras ruined it. The guy at lower left is Little League founder Carl Stotz.
• Lovelovelove the saturated colors in this hockey photo.
• Okay, so this has to qualify as one of history’s weirdest relay races, no?
• I hope he’s saying, “Hey, kid, pull up your left sock.”
• Here’s an interesting Westinghouse ad extolling the virtues of night baseball.
• Coke has had lots of great sports-oriented ads over the years, but this one is particularly nice.
• Maybe they’ll dust off this ad for the pigthrax scare.
• There’s something really beautiful about the angles and composition of this NHL shot.
• Who are these starstruck lasses? The Pee Wee Reese Fan Club, of course!
• As we head for the home stretch, it turns out that awesome striped socks and adorable tribespeople can coexist. Isn’t that heartening?
• Here’s a good one to go out on.
Want to see more? A few dozen additional photos are available here. Major thanks to Zac for compiling all of these while he was looking for nudie tribe photos.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Whoa, major discovery here: Connie Mack in uniform! That shot was taken during spring training in 1950 (awesome find by Jason). … Speaking of major baseball discoveries, look at this! That’s from Hall of Fame curator Tom Shieber’s blog, Baseball Research. … Ben Traxel has created a new Broncos uni concept that mixes and matches several elements from the team’s history. … Remember this weird uni item? Craig Bates ended up winning that auction, and he’s provided a bunch of photos. … Matt Clement sent along some highlights from the Buffalo Sports Museum. Among his picks: the Bisons’ “Pepsi” jersey, Sabres season ticket books sponsored by Utica Club, and the sign from the Aud Club. … The U. of Minnesota hockey team has a new alternate jersey. Here’s the rear view (with thanks to John Thompson). … Regatta news from sailing enthusiast Doug Steffenson, who sent along a bunch of pics from the ICSA Sloop National Championship. “Interesting to note that U. South Alabama not only goes with what looks like a car manufacturer’s logo (Jaguar) on the front but also has a big “USA” across the back. Looks like UC Irvine got a sponsor deal for across the front (WaMu –- but I thought they were out of business?) with the school’s initials on the back. A sailing anteater would seem to be more interesting than the initials. BC, Brown, and Wisconsin went with letter logos across the back while Charleston has their burgee (flag) on the front.” … MLB umps and the Carolina Panthers: Separated at birth? (Good observation by Doug Brei.) … There are tragedies, and then there are tragedies (as forwarded by Keith Owen). … Very nice shot of Jackie Robinson as a UCLA baseball player (with thanks to Mark Loveland). … Robert Marshall informs me that he and fellow reader James T. Huening will be going curling here this Sunday. Full report to follow. … The Chargers are selling some super-cool posters for several of their home games this season. So far they’ve released the Broncos and Raiders editions, with Eagles and Chiefs versions still to come (with thanks to Dustry McGowan). … Good article about Joey MacDonald’s mask and pads here (with thanks to John Muir). … “Jordan’s and Palestine’s women’s soccer teams faced each other on Monday in Al-Ram on the West Bank,” says Morris Levin. Note the Jordanian player wearing the hijab. Ditto for goalkeeper here, although Morris says that’s “less interesting since keepers often wear long pants and sleeves anyway.” … Nice Super-8 footage from a 1998 Mets/D-backs game, including dubbed-in audio from Gary Cohen and Bob Murphy, here. It’s hard to see, but this was one of those rare games when the Metsies wore black jerseys with blue undersleeves, a configuration I’ve done my best to forget about over the years (with thanks to Brian Erni). … What’s that printed on the inside of Cam Janssen’s shirttail? A high-res version of the photo reveals this. The first part is simple enough — “Lettering by Liebe” (a St. Louis company, remember — I wrote about them back in 2007). As for the rest, Joe Barker explains: “Bert Godin is the Blues’ equipment manager. The date on the jersey is from a preseason game against the Avs, the Blues’ first road preseason game of the year. Probably the first time they had the road whites done up.” Faaaascinating. … Big birthday wishes to our own Scott M.X. Turner today. See you tonight, buddy.

This picture was from 1959 or 1960. The gloves worn by the umpires are similar to those that are worn by taxi drivers. I think that it is a way to keep the umpires from getting their hands dirty. (You eat a hamburger with a napkin in Japan, not with your hands. I am still used to eating with my hands when I am there.)
Maybe it was an opening day game, so there is some pomp and circumstance to it?

The Orioles base-sweeper girls get some attention in one of the World Series films from 1969, 1970 or 1971, when after they are done sweeping the bags one of the girls playfully taps a player or coach with her broom.

Pushball
http://www.proberten...
Push-Ball is an outdoor team game invented by Crane of Massachusetts in 1894. It was introduced into Great Britain and played at the Crystal Palace, London in 902, but never became popular. The games is played by two teams each of eleven players divided into forwards, right wings, left wings and goalkeeper. The goalposts are 18 feet (5.5 meters) high and 20 feet (six meters) apart with a crossbar at the height of seven feet from the ground. The ball used is six feet (180 cm) in diameter and weighs 50 lb (about 23 kg). The playing area measures 140 yards by 50 yards (about 128 meters by 46 meters). Pushing the ball under the bar scores five points, eight points are scored for throwing the ball over the crossbar. A variety of push-ball was played at military tournaments in London during the early 20th century, and there were national teams, England and the USA for example competed at Headingley in August 1902.

Last first. Dane, you are correct about that fabulous hockey foto. Definitely, magnificently Quebec City. That’s the Hotel Frontenac looming above all. Plus the walls, the cliffs, the Saint Lawrence… One of the greatest settings in North America… One of the youths is wearing a Canadiens sweater; the others seem to be sporting the late great sweater of les Ases du Quebec (Quebec Aces).
And then Pushball. I was all set to provide chapter and verse until I saw the customarily authoritative submission by Jeremy Brahm. It’s unfair, I think, since Jeremy probably lives on the other side of the International Date Line, and so it’s still yesterday or it’s already tomorrow or something.
Back when Ricko and I were growing up, pushball definitely enjoyed a worldwide vogue. Haven’t seen it since the early 1960s, though.
Finally. Paul, this NatGeo morning is one of the best ever. Great work!

That Broncos concept jersey is absolutely fantastic. 100% better than any of the individual uniforms they’ve ever worn. My only suggestion is that, if they ever wear something like this, the socks must be swizzled. Do that, and these would be the perfect uni set for that team.

From the Baltimore Sun:
Uniform violation costs Bulls title
The Hereford boys cross country team was celebrating a championship one minute and relinquishing it the next.
The No. 8 Bulls appeared to have won their second consecutive Baltimore County title Monday, but one of their runners was disqualified after the race for a uniform violation. After the scores were recalculated, the team title went to Towson (49 points), while Hereford (57) slipped to third behind host Dulaney (54).
In the girls competition, Dulaney edged Hereford for the team crown.
The Hereford runner who initially finished fourth in the boys race was cited for wearing black compression shorts underneath his uniform pants that had visible white stitching. That violates Rule 9, Section 6, Article 1b of the National Federation of High Schools rule book, which states: “Items displaying seams stitched on the outside of the garment in a visible contrasting color to the undergarment will be illegal beginning with the 2009-10 school year.”
“They can take the plaque away, but they can’t take away the race,” Hereford co-coach Jason Bowman said. “Our kids ran great today.”

As I understand it, the white gloves were to make it easy to see the calls the umps were making. First time I saw Japanese baseball on TV that was mentioned, it was obvious it worked, especially on the tube. Umps’ hands looked huge and it was incredibly easy to pick up the calls. Remember thinking it was a pretty good idea, but probably would never fly in U.S. baseball. Us having a tendency to get all knotted up about our masculinity the way we do, I couldn’t see American umps ever agreeing to wear white gloves. Too much like a mime. LOL

I believe WaMu is part of JP Morgan Chase and they’ve kept the name. Similar to what they’ve done with National City Bank since the PNC transaction. The tagline has been “National City, now a part of PNC”. Although in a week, the NCB name will begin to be phased out as the full conversion starts. Whether or not WaMu will eventually do this is unknown to me at this time.
Push ball makes me think of something: as I have been doing research at a local library branch, in the 70s, I see standings for a game called fieldball. Does anyone have any idea what this might have been? My brother was born in ‘69 and he doesn’t remember it.

i appreciate your shout out on your little blog, but i’d also appreciate it if you’d correct that misstatement
and to term the survey “rudimentary”? please…james went through several iterations of that in order to make it as simple, but accurate as possible — that isn’t rudimentary, that’s smart
we could have (and by we, i mean james) come up with a very “intricate” and confusing survey, but it was ‘barebones’ (if you will) for a reason

Like many Japanese workers, Gough is wearing white gloves as a sign of respect and cleanliness.

About a thousand years ago I played baseball in college for a school whose colors were purple and black. I have to tell you, purple as a trim color is sweet. Yes, massive swaths of purple cloth can be aggravating, but thin, purple block letters on a white baseball jersey can look pretty damn good. If I can find it I’ll scan a post a pic from my playing days to better illustrate my point.

Quick thing to say about Ben Traxel’s Broncos concepts: I find it as a rule of thumb for concepts that it’s not a good idea to mix ‘n match logos from different eras on the same uniform. It just seems like it’s trying to be too much to team’s fans. I notice White Sox, Brewers, Astros concepts seem to be big fatalities of this as well.

Baseball has a long history of not so much mixing eras but of having “cap” logos and “crests” (for lack of a better term).
White Sox have the sock logo on sleeve, Cubs have Cubbie face, Twins have the “twins”, Brewers had state of Wisconsin logo, Mets have “skyline” patch, etc.
Football, not so much. So football is definitely a little different to see two logos. Not that we NEVER see it…just not often (Saints “state” on pants, for ex.)

Teams can apply to the NHL Offices to have white-at-home games during the season. The NHL bases their decision on the visiting teams’ road schedules so that the road teams don’t have to bring two sets of uniforms on the road.
There is no rule on which games they can apply for, but the most likely answer would be that since it was a one-day road trip for the Wild, the Hawks applied for a white-at-home game at some point in the off-season. The NHL, in their examination of the schedule, would have assign the white-at-home for the Wild game so that the Wild would be able to pack their alternates for only one game.

Could use a little double-checking from you guys, just to make sure I’ve got this right. My brother is a huge Expos/Nats fan, and last year I framed all of the patches ever worn on the uniform of the Nationals (but I don’t include each of the All-Star game patches, b/c that just becomes too much). This year I’m doing the same, but for the Expos. So far, this is what I have:
1969: MLB 100th Anniversary
1976: Montreal Olympics (I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a pic of a player with a small white sleeve patch of the Montreal Olympics logo)
1976: National League Centennial patch
1982: All-Star Game
1992-2004: Home/Road sleeve patch
1993: 25th Anniversary
1994: MLB 125th Anniversary
1997: Jackie Robinson 50th Anniversary (apparently they wore a special version in French, but I couldn’t find it anywhere, so I bought the regular one)
1998: 30th Anniversary
2000: Maurice Richard “9″ tribute
2001: American flag on the back of the neck for 9/11
2003: Puerto Rico Series
There is a logo for the team’s 35th Anniversary in 2003, but was it ever worn as a sleeve patch?

Fair enough to the first comment. I have LOTS of rules I go by myself on my concepts. One of them is to not replicate the helmet logo all over the uniform. I don’t need to see it on the left shoulder, left side of the head, right side of the head, and right shoulder — that many times. I try to do something different. I know lots of people like the old Big D logo. Maybe it wants to be changed, tweeked, altered, updated a little so it is not an exact replica of before. Doesn’t bother me too bad in this instance though. The biggest problem will be the lack of space on the sleeve to put it. *Bing* Imagine what it would look like on the shrink wrapped under sleeves that were mocked up a while back. It would look like a tatoo. If a player got a real tatoo he could be exempt from wearing the underoos! Aww…just a wild ass thought.

Slightly-believable rumors floating around the school paper office:
Oregon’s going to be rocking glow-in-the-dark uniforms on Saturday night.

Whoa, gonna be a tough one to watch on TV.
Pygmy bowling, dueling showshovels, Bavarian glockenspeil drill team and maybe, just maybe, a football game in there somewhere.
Sigh. When you pile up enough gimmicks it just gets…boring. So it becomes what you sought to avoid in the first place. Ho-hum, another Weiner one-legged race.

Kinda liked when Celts stuck to black (and later kelly green) long afer everyone had gone to white. Of course, mostly those were black Converse All-Stars (I think).

The Celtics wear primarily white sneakers at home, paired with the white uniforms and they wear primarily black sneakers on the road, paired with the green uniforms. Given the fact that it’s a road game is probably why they have the mix.

Yes, they certainly do. Was just pointing out for those who don’t know it, white shoes for the Celtics is, relatively speaking, a recent developent. John Havlicek, Bill Russell, Robert Parrish, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Sam Jones, K.C. Jones, Dave Cowens, Bob Cousy—all of ‘em and their teammates in Boston—never wore white shoes as Celtics. Home or road.

VERTICALLY STRIPED SOCKS….
I mentioned Bloomington Lincoln H.S. (kelly & white) here in Minnesota wearing vertically striped socks from ‘62-’64 (or somewhere in those years). Figured I’d better post the photos.

I was at the Cavs game tonight and have a few uni notes (no pics, sorry):
1. The Cavs wore their standard (wine) road unis, so the Celtics were in white.
2. More interestingly, the dancers’ uniforms had the Mark Price-era ball in hoop logo on the chest, but in the Cavs’ third jersey color scheme. They were blue, with the wordmark in gold with a wine outline. Think they’ll sell that jersey along with the wine and gold palette throwback?

re: Pushball
We played that game in elementary school gym class with more or less those rules, but we called it “cage ball”. This was in Westborough, MA in the late 1960’s. (We also did calisthenics to “Go You Chicken Fat Go” records, but that’s another story entirely. Good ol’ Mrs. Cavanaugh…)

WHOA! AMAZING Broncos uni mock-ups.
I’m a HUGE Denver sports fan and those have everything I love about our unis through the years.
Only correction I would make: Put the “D” on the helmet and the new logo on the sleeves. The D needs to be on the helmet… period. And the new logo would look pretty amazing on the sleeves.
WOW though.
