So you’re a Winter Olympics “athlete.” You’ve spent years training for “sports” like curling, or ice dancing, or rhythmic biathlon, or whatever it is you specialize in, you’ve made sure to ingest only the fancy new designer steroids that the doping tests can’t detect, and you’ve even learned not to snicker when someone refers to “the Olympic movement.” So it’s perfectly understandable that you were a little peeved yesterday when some snot-nose kid and a balloon got more attention than you’ll ever get to discover that the medals you’re competing for — the medals you will surely win! — look like a bunch of heat-warped records.
Actually, I think they look pretty cool, but the best thing about them, clearly, is that they’ll probably piss off a lot of people because they look like factory rejects. You can learn a lot more about them in this article, and there are some truly wonderful interactive features available here, but here’s a quick primer:
• The warped surface — sorry, undulating surface, as the press notes repeatedly state — is an Olympic first and is the result of a year’s worth of work by the Royal Canadian Mint. I give it about a week before someone says we can’t have Canadian-style national health care “because those Canadians, their fucking mint can’t even make a flat medal, what a bunch of losers, FAIL!”
• Each individual medal will have a distinct abstract design etched into its surface. Each individual etched design is taken from one of two larger composite designs that depict a whale and a raven, so think of each medal as part of a jigsaw puzzle (okay, a warped jigsaw puzzle). Haven’t seen the full composite images yet, but I’m sure they’re floating around on one of those interactive pages.
• Everyone seems to be going to great pains to point out that the medals are “among the heaviest” in Olympic history. I find something a little sad about this. I mean, I could understand if they were saying they contain more metal, or a higher grade of metal, but “heaviest”? That’s like Spinal Tap being “one of England’s loudest bands.” Let’s try to retain a bit of dignity, shall we?
• As usual, the silver looks way better than the gold or bronze. Go for the silver!!
And so on. But really, can you imagine winning one of these and then having to explain to your great-aunt, “No, really, it’s supposed to be that way”? Too much bother. May as well just score some hash, scarf down whatever looks good at the buffet, and have a few trysts in the Olympic Village with those cute Scandinavians (unless you’re already Scandinavian, in which case you can go trolling for cute Asians). Am I right?

Remember the orange sleeve debacle from a few years back? A little birdie tells me Nike has something similar planned for Nov. 14th, involving at least one school and probably more:
The uniform will be all-white with some kind of gradient checkerboard fade on the sleeves and pants. The helmet will be white with that checkerboard fade and the school logo. The gloves will have a [one part of the school's logo] on the left-hand palm and [the other part of the logo] on the other hand, so when they’re combined they make the full logo.
Well, that sounds like a real boon for mankind. Let’s avoid the rush and start hating it now.
And speaking of warped records…: I’ve put another half-dozen or so old indie singles up for auction on eBay. All of them are flatter than those Olympic medals. Remember, every record I sell gets us closer to the day when I, uh, won’t have any records left to sell. So bid already!
Uni Watch News Ticker: Nice batch of vintage gumball helmets available here (with thanks to Brinke Guthrie). … New uniforms for the U.S. lacrosse team (with thanks to Thomas Langan). … Oh man, pure gold here: an old Colt .45s mail order catalog. That’s from Mike Hersh, who also pointed me toward this 1913 Spalding catalog (too bad about all the missing swatches) and this amazing uni fabric catalog. … Very interesting NOB. That’s David Van Der Gulik from the AHL’s Abbotsford Heat, whose name has been rendered in a variety of styles during his stints with the Heat, the Calgary Flames, the Quad City Flames, and Boston University (great work by Teebz). … More white-at-home news, this time from Zachary Charles, who says he recalls the 49ers wearing white at home for preseason games when he was growing up. That appears to be confirmed in the following passage from this Wiki page: “From the 1980s until 2005, the 49ers nearly always wore their white uniforms at home for their two preseason home games (and thus usually wore white jerseys the whole preseason).” Yes, I know, it’s Wiki — a starting point, not the last word. But Zachary found this photo — note the baseball diamond, which indicates they were playing at Candlestick, unless it was from the two seasons that the Rockies played at Mile High. … As several readers have noted in recent weeks, Dwight Feeney’s shoulder stripes come to a point. Weird. … According to this item, Kentucky may soon get a Lebron-branded uniform and shoes (with thanks to Chris Edwards). … The Islanders will be wearing “spooky” practice jerseys for Halloween, which they’ll then auction off for charity (with thanks to John Muir). … Junior Seau got his old number back, as explained in the third graf of this page. … I used to play softball with this guy who’d briefly been a professional tennis player, and I remember how freaked out I was when he showed me how his racket arm was about two inches longer than his non-rack arm — creepy. But that’s nothing compared to this arm wrestler (pretty gross, Kirsten). … We had some discussion yesterday regarding whether this item is a baseball uni, a softball uni, a basketball warm-up, or what. The definitive word comes from, of course, sporting goods historian Terry Procter, who writes: “The top is actually a SandMark 13 basketball warm-up jacket made of a heavy-weight stretch nylon fabric . The top has a baseball-type neck and front placket, but it is a snap-front, not a button-front as most baseball shirts would be. And the lettering is all wrong for baseball. No front name or back numbers (back numbers are required for high school baseball). Yes, the pants are baseball pants. What I think happened is that the seller got the top and the pants from a source and assumed that they were from the same set of uniforms. Completely innocent assumption. Aren’t you glad you have me around to point out these things to you?” Indeed. … New Era is running a cap design contest, and Kevin Hayashi has already come up with a pre-inside-outed rally cap design. … According to the third-to-last graf of this story, WVU hoops will unveil a new alternate uni today (with thanks to Joshua Exline). … New hoops uniforms for Pitt. … Good article about a Canadian hockey logo designer here (as posted on the Creamer site by Chris Creamer himself). … Oooh, check out the Penguins’ championship ring design (with thanks to Matt Harris). … Matt Harris spotted a pair of white loafers behind Charlie Manuel last night. Was ol’ Charlie getting ready for a quick getaway? Nope — “It’s a tribute to the late Harry Kalas,” says Matt. “The shoes and (not pictured) blazer are in the dugout for all games.” … Shouldn’t this guy be playing baseball? (As noted by Jesse Strauss). … Remember Owen Schmitt’s little pregame mishap last Sunday? It has become the unlikely inspiration for this T-shirt (big thanks to Michael Princip). … Reprinted from last night’s comments: MLB is selling some T-shirts based on uni history. I’ll let the rest of you figure out if the jersey designs in the illos are accurate. My gripe is more nuanced: Was it really necessary to print “Jersey Evolution” (or the Majestic logo) underneath each illustration? Like, duh, we can SEE that the illo shows the evolution of the team’s jersey. I can’t tell if the Majestic people are idiots or if they think everyone else is an idiot, but it’s miserable design either way. … Traveling calls — or lack of calls — have been unofficial joke in the NBA for years. Now they’ll be an official joke. … If you scroll down past the Limbaugh commentary on this page (let’s please not discuss that today, thanks), you’ll find some coverage of the Blackhawks Ice Girls’ new uniforms (with thanks to Kasey Ignarski). … USF wore white helmets last night, and I think they looked really good. … Small road uni change for Wisconsin hockey, going from this to this (with thanks to Nate Neumann).
Oot and Aboot: I’m not going to be near a computer for most of today or tomorrow. So please take it easy on the Ticker submissions for the next 48 hours, so I don’t go into cardiac arrest the next time I log in for my e-mail. Thanks.

I like the surface design of the medals – I think the artwork is quite striking, and the “no two medals alike” is an interesting touch.
I don’t get the wavy design – that just seems like pointless “look what we can do”, or the need to be the biggest medal ever.
My 2c on the thinking behind these medals – the Canadian mint is an official sponsor of the games and has the contract to make the medals. The Mint has evolved in the last few years into a giant business. They make circulation coins for Canada (obviously) but they also make coins for a number of other countries, and they make collector coins for Canada and a number of other countries. They’ve been very innovative in new technologies for coins such as insets, colours and frosting, and they’ve done square coins and holograms as well.
So my guess is that they’re using their role as sponsor to demonstrate the innovative things they can do (no two alike, waves) to drum up business.
Where am I going with this – they’re no different than uniform manufacturers forcing “innovation” on college and pro teams to show off what they can do, in order to boost their profile and show off their capabilities.
#65 by mike 2 on 10.16.09 11:20 am |
But on your other question, can you imagine explaining the medal to your grandparents, I can tell you you’re wrong. A lot of olympians train here in Calgary and I get the opportunity to work out with some of them and you’ve never met a more driven bunch in your life. They don’t care about the design or aesthetics of the medals, or much else, they care about winning, and I guarantee that for anyone who wins one, it will forever be their most valuable possession.

Someone mentioned college games just seeming to look better once it gets cold.
Well, is part of it maybe…
1. It patches in stereotypical image of football?
2. For us at UW, we notice things like more teams going to full socks (even if all black or all white), and that gives things a more “finished” look?
Anyway…back to shitty weather…

I like the idea of altering the medals for every games. It must make the collections more interesting for the folks who win multiple medals at different Olympics. Not that they would care that much, but why not.
Has anyone else been on the Canadian Mint tour in Ottawa? They go on and on about how innovative and cutting edge they are, this is hardly a surprise. It’s actually very impressive what they can do with coins.

Nike’s HQs are an island in the city of Beaverton, but they successfully fought the attempt to have their property annexed into the city because they didn’t want to pay higher taxes. It would have taken over 30 years for the increased taxes to match what Nike spent in legal fees, and Nike won because its corporate value gave it deeper pockets than the city of Beaverton.
The majority (including myself) of us complain about Nike’s designs, marketing, etc. This little nugget shows what a**holes they really are.

I think the medals are great. Not only are they innovative in design they are innovative in their use of recycled/reclaimed metals from used electronics which for some reason is not mentioned anywhere.
About the health care comment, you can keep your “warped” American health care. We in Canada are happy that the least among us still has the same access to health care as the richest. It boggles my mind how middle-class Americans are willing to pay through the nose for their mediocre HMOs so that the elite few can enjoy deluxe health care.
We are not dying in the emergency rooms waiting for care as Rush Limbaugh and company would like you to believe. We do have health care for people who have diseases from birth and for people who are old and sick — no one is denied. Being denied health care is what is warped.
Oh yes, we do pay taxes to pay for this. But so do you. The only difference is that you don’t pay the government you pay those caring wonderful people at Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, CIGNA and how can I forget the most caring company of all, AIG.

Finally, Dallas could once again be America’s Team, at least in sales.
#119 by Stretch on 10.16.09 2:09 pm |
That NBA traveling article is so wrong. Don’t trust anyone in the media to ever know anything about the rules of any sport. Last year in the NBA players were not allowed “one step”. Every rule code (NCAA, NFHS, FIBA) gives no limit to the number of steps. The NBA did not in the past either. I have not read the actual wording of the new rule but I doubt it says anything about 2 steps.
Basically traveling is easy. If a player lifts his pivot foot he must pass, shoot, or request a timeout before the pivot foot returns to the floor. Lifting the pivot foot and returning it to the floor is traveling. If the player wants to start a dribble he must do so before the pivot foot is lifted from the ground. Lifting the pivot foot then starting a dribble is traveling. That is all that matters (for standing players).

Thankfully and Hopefully forever.
I think a good, league-wide policy would be that ALL TEAMS wear White at home, allowing fans to see the visiting teams colors in their dark jerseys, except for DIVISIONAL GAMES, where home teams would then wear Dark Jerseys at home.
Why DIVISION GAMES, because EVERY YEAR we play those teams home-and-home, and we are already familiar with their colors and these rivals’ dark jerseys.
THAT WAY, FANS SEE THE MOST VARIETY, AND HOME FANS STILL GET 3-4 TIMES PER YEAR TO SEE THEIR HOME TEAM’S IN DARK JERSEYS …..

It works extremely well based upon the number of people that abuse it annually. If you don’t like how it’s being abused, speak to your local politician. They are your voice when it comes to legislative changes.
As for the medals, they are made from recycled computer parts (good for the environment), and reflect the culture of the west coast (good for everyone). You don’t have to like them, but if you’re “ashamed to be a Canadian” because of them, I’d prefer if you were not Canadian.

Canada does have a lot to be proud of…
I love that anthem. You mind if we borrow it?
A-MER-ICA!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
Our country strong and free!
From far and wide, America,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
America, we stand on guard for thee.
America, we stand on guard for thee.
Give us the anthem and we’ll give you Vermont. Deal?

Just to make sure I know which system we’re talking about: Do people get turned away from emergency rooms because of a “lack of resources” in the USA or Canada?

Ya know, I thought you were advising him to have his tissues ready because he was liable to burst into tears in a patriotic reaction to hearing the Canadian National Anthem.
Then… I clicked on the video. :-0
Maybe I wasn’t thinking right about the tissues.

Is it just me or are the Rutgers helmets just a tad too sparklely. I don’t remember them that way, but this is the first time I’ve seen Rutgers this year.

I was at that game – that was the last regular season game against Los Angeles. There were a few more home playoff games before they went out against Detroit in five or six.
( I still have the ticket, they didn’t rip them on the way in. There was also a keychain which I gave away a while ago)

They’ve converted a lot of people who said that ballet was boring. Many a lover of the fine arts has started his or her appreciation of the cultural events in Windsor.

Canada. Happens all the time, unless the ER is completely closed that day, in which case they don’t even get a chance to be turned away since they can’t even get inside.

I’m just getting around to watching Wednesday’s David Letterman show on the DVR. During Chris “Mad Dog” Russo’s guest spot, Letterman, unsolicited, sang the praises of the Broncos’ AFL throwbacks, and Russo complimented him on his sports acumen.

Um, it is your problem as much as it mine. If you bitch and complain about it, it’s clearly a problem. SO either stop bitching, or do something about it.
And why are you looking a gift horse in the mouth? Those of “you” with real problems wouldn’t even qualify for American health insurance, meaning that your “guaranteed” treatment just cost you, say, $30,000.
Let’s see: one year’s salary to get treatment now, or wait a year and keep the money that I earn after taxes which amounts to approximately $24,000. I’ll wait the year and keep the 24-large. Thanks for the “crap” medical care. That 24-grand means nothing when it comes to feeding my family and putting a roof over their heads.
Greg B. said:
You keep saying this, but you neither offer a suggestion on how to fix it or offer a way to make it better. If you aren’t part of the solution, there’s only one side you can be on. And no one likes to listen to someone bitch and whine and moan and complain constantly. Get off your ass and do something if you don’t like it!
Greg B. said:
You’re not an athlete, you’re never going to wear one, you have nothing to do with the Olympics, you weren’t part of the design process. Did I sum that up enough there for you to rescind your citizenship over something that embarrasses you that much? Because I can think of a number of things worse than the medals that I’d be patriotically-embarrassed about.
But you keep complaining about the one thing that middle-class Americans want, that the rest of the world has, and that we, as Canadians, are extremely proud of. It’s not perfect, but it’s a helluva lot better than the alternative.
And if you don’t like our health care, I would suppose that Tommy Douglas was just a lunatic communist bastard in your eyes too? Because he was voted as the most important Canadian in the history of our country.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE THAT THIS HAPPENS ON A REGULAR BASIS?
It’s an ER. It’s impossible for them to turn away life-threatening medical situations. I know ER doctors who work overtime for free because they have taken the oath to save lives. What you are saying is absolutely impossible. You hear me? IMPOSSIBLE.
Unless there is some major catastrophe happening like an earthquake or a hurricane, I know of no ERs closing in any Canadian city at any time to people who need emergency services. I have never, in all my years on the planet, seen an ER close. My mother, who works in the ER, has never once been told to go home because the ER is closing. NEVER. As in NOT ONCE in her 35+ years of working in the ER.
However, if you come in with a hangnail or a sniffle, I’d toss your ass out on the street as well. Why? Because you’re one of the people abusing the system! But they don’t even do that!

How is it the health care system’s fault that there aren’t enough nurses and doctors to solve your problem? Here’s some research.
They can’t make people go to school to learn the trade. They can only hire those willing to go through the education system. The “resource shortage” that you speak of is not a health care problem, but overall systematic problem from the education system to the govenment to the health care industry.
No students = no nurses. No nurses = no ER. It’s that simple. In fact, there is a shortage of nurses, doctors, x-ray techs, physiotherapists, lab techs and a multitude of other positions within hospitals, but you seem to forget that there are other positions outside of the ER.
This isn’t a health care system problem at all. Blame is simply assigned there because they are the most visibly noticed.
And Nova Scotia ERs are closing because of two issues: you have no nurses, and your province can’t seem to attract any new ones. This is more of a governmental problem than a health care problem. What was my original comment?
If you want change, speak to your local politician.

It is the system’s fault because the system does nothing to manage demand other than through use of a queueing model, leading to long wait times and inadequate care for the customer. It also results in an insatiable demand for these people, which means that they need to get paid, which means that the government either hasn’t got enough money to pay them at all or cannot pay them a competitive enough wage to work here, so they all go off to Florida or wherever to work for better pay and ERs here have to close.
This is the fundamental problem with our system — you cannot possibly provide enough resources under the current model to get it to work decently.
Greg B. said:
Actually your original comment was that it was impossible…. er, excuse me, IMPOSSIBLE, for ERs not to be open and available. So I guess I can mark that up as progress with you now that you have admitted that to be false, but at this point it hardly seems worth bothering. You think the system’s great, good for you. Take some advice: just don’t get a chronic disease.
