OK, it’s time to announce the nominees for the “Design A Cap” contest (the contest is now closed, but if you missed the original article, click here). Hopefully, one of the caps you’re about to see will be chosen by Coach Nemanich for his team, the Sartell Sabres. Lots to get to today, so lets begin.
Our first nominee comes from Adam Hainsfurther. Here’s his submission. And here’s Adam:
I went with a bit of a hockey fans touch on this. This is a logo similar to an alternate logo for the Buffalo Sabres, using the S provided to us by Coach Nemanich. After throwing the S in front of Sword I proceeded to change the colors of both the S and the sword in four different combinations of Navy, Royal, White, and Silver. This is what I came up with (note: I rendered up the white hat thinking what the hell, personally I’d go with the silver before the white one, but the Navy and Royal versions are my two favorites)
Next is Wesley Willis, who has two submissions, a home and an away. Here’s Wesley:
My name is Wesley Willis of Boaz, AL, and I am a avid reader of Uni Watch and I read it every day.
Here are my submissions for the home and away caps for the Sartell Sabres.
The logo, which is maintained throughout both caps, is a classic-looking letter S with a black sabre through its center from the lower-right hand area to the upper-left hand area. The home cap is all royal blue with an white S and black sabre, and the away cap is a white cap with a royal blue bill and royal blue S and black sabre. I hope that you and Coach Nemanich both like what I’ve produced here, and thank you for your consideration. I created these two files in Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0.

Hello I am currently living in Sartell, MN and frequent the site quite a bit. I have to say I was surprised to read a story posted on Uni Watch from not only my home state, but hometown. Here are a couple of my suggestions, both are taken from the Buffalo Sabres design.
Next up is R. Scott Rogers, who has multiple submissions contained within his entry. Scott has quite the explanation:
Here is my entry in the cap contest for the Sartell Sabres. I grew up in Minnesota, and so have seen Sartell’s football and boy’s hockey uniforms in the past, and I drew some inspiration from those unis, which have nicely balanced royal and white with touches of gray or silver.
Working from Coach Nemanich’s suggestions, I imagined an “S” logo that could convey both the jaunty swooshing of a movie swordsman, a Zorro or Rob Roy, with the dynamic stance of a fencer. To bring in Coach Nemanich’s U-Va inspiration, I wanted to put a sabre blade figuratively in the hands of the Sartell “S”. I drew an “S” with a single fluid line that could be carved by a swordsman, with bulbs at each end like a fencer’s hands, and then put a cavalry sabre blade into the “S”’s hands. I angled the blade to give a sense of depth, to balance the slightly askew “S”, and to allow the “S” logo to work with either “Sabres” or “Sartell” jersey scripts in the future. (Outlined and drop-shadowed versions of the scripts on white and royal.)
I kept the double-outline of Sartell’s current cap logo, in part for continuity and to allow for better visual balance with the team’s white uniforms, and in part because the introduction of a gray-and-black blade in the blue or white letter requires the double outline. I’ve supplied images of the logo in Sartell’s current scheme of royal and white-and-royal caps, but I would suggest replacing one of these with a royal-and-gray cap to maintain a stronger connection to the school’s athletic identity.
I believe that my script “S”, which falls somewhere between the flatter cursive “S” used by the St. Paul Saints on their jerseys and the rounder one used for the 2001 All-Star Game in Milwaukee, allows this cap logo to integrate with the current uniform set without clashing, and also gives Coach Nemanich a strong logo to grow into as the team moves into its next uniform purchase.
In addition, I intended the cap logo to have at least the potential for use in other sports; I think it could work both on football helmets and on boys and girls hockey shoulder patches.
If four-color embroidery is prohibitive, the blade could be rendered in a single flat color that matches the outer outline, either black or gray. (I would choose gray.) The logo thus rendered loses a sense of depth and motion, but the image of the sabre blade remains clear.

I dont know if you are still taking submissions for the cap design contest but i figured id send my work to you anyways. Basically all i did was redesign the S logo that the school already uses to make it look more sharp. Then I incorporated the sabre/sword logo behind the S. I guess that goes along the Virginia logo affect that the coach is looking for.
Im sorry that this work was all done in Microsoft paint (poor college student, cant afford photoshop), but i think it came out well for the best part. I have included the logo only in the first file. The second file is the logo as it would look on the hat. When i shrunk the logo down in paint to put it on the hat it really blurred out though.
Let me know what you think. I would appreciate the feedback from you and the coach.
And our penultimate cap submissions come from Dan Grieve, who has created both a white cap and a blue cap. Dan didn’t provide any commentary, but the two hats are just great. Thanks. And as a last minute addition, Dan also came up with two ‘alternate’ submissions, white alt and blue alt.
And finally, we have several submissions from Larry Torrenz, who not only created caps and logos, but (even though we didn’t ask for it) uniforms as well. So here are black jersey (with caps), blue jersey, gray road, and home white, as well as a school name alternate and a white alt; Larry also included a full uni mock and two wordmark/logos, here and here. Whew. Here’s Larry:
Thought I would take a whack at the logo request. Decided to keep it simple, with a little flair on the lettering.

Well, there you have it. All I can say is HOLY SHIT WOW! What an outstanding effort from all of these designers. Every one of them is each outstanding in it’s own right, and I’m sure Coach Nemanich will have a difficult time choosing one. I hope that one of them will be selected as the “winner,” but they’re all great.
My thanks (deep, deep thanks) to each and every person who participated in this contest. Since the reaction was so great, I hope we can have a similar contest in the near future.

I get a lot of E-mail from UW readers, and I appreciate it, and try to read it all. Most of it is in response to a request or a contest submission, or what have you, but occasionally I get a random E-mail that turns into something neat. Case in point. Reader Ted Machnik sent me the following earlier this week:

I’m not handy with with templates and such, but I’m wondering if you could get your friend, Paul Soto, to come up with a couple of renderings of the Washington Nationals in the Expos original colours, trim, and fonts, circa 1969.
I think the scripted “W” would look very good on a tri-color cap. On the unis, “nats” where “expos” use to be. I would be curious to see how it would look.

Well, one thing led to another — I contacted Paul (”Pretty Boy Paulie“) with Ted’s request, and well, Paulie didn’t disappoint! So, I’m happy to share with you Paul’s Washington Expos, circa 1969:
For reference, here’s what the Expos looked like in 1969. Paul didn’t (yet) take a crack at the roadies, but he did a smashup job on the homes. He created four different logos for the Nationals based on the combined Nats & Expos script/wordmark. But he wasn’t done. He also mocked up six possible home unis. I agree that there are a lot of good submissions for the contest….it’s tough to choose just one. In terms of a bad football matchup, I would guess the dustup between Fla.Int’l and Western Kentucky, both 0-4, would qualify.

Fantastic stuff, everyone (the contest entries and the Natspos unis). Unfortunately, I don’t have the time today to really look at every one of them in enough detail to pick my favorites. I’ll say this, though. I don’t think Coach Nemanich could go wrong with any of those.
Oh, and it’s good to see that Wesley Willis is alive and well. That contest submission is surely no Fiasco. In fact, it whips the polar bear’s ass.

Good work on the cap designs. I hope none of the ones with copyright infringements gets picked as the winner (the ones that jacked the sabre from the Buffalo Sabres logo).

So many good cap/uni submissions. My one conclusion: in general, it’s better to have the sabre(s) pointing up than pointing down. (What would you call the science of designing unis with swords on them? Sabremetrics!)
But then I got to Larry Torrenz’s uni designs and I was almost convinced that this rule, too, could be productively broken.

I like Doug Smith’s “old school”, because, well, I’m old school. It’s too nice for a hat though-think it would make a better shoulder patch. Especially like that there is some color in it and the baseball seams.

Larry Torrenz’s extensive set of uni mockups look field-ready to me. The arched, beveled wordmark is a real good fit with those colors and that font. A very good design all around. Just sharp.
I’ll have to look at all the caps one more time to pick a favorite.

Nice job all. I would have to say it’s a toss up between Jason Epstein’s and Dan Grieve’s concepts. Mostly, the two alternate submissions by Dan I liked. I think the clincher for me would be to see player illustrations wearing the concepts.

Some of these cap designs are way too detail-heavy for a cap. Double & triple outlines are overkill. Some of these really remind me of the Detroit Lions style logos. My two cents.

LOL, a little like saying Argyle kneehighs are uglier than Argyle short socks, isn’t it.
But, as we both noted, it’s gonna be “different” (as well as the first time ever on live TV in COLOR for those unis)…and that’s the fun of all this.

Anybody watching the Auburn vs. Arkansas football game, any Tigers/War Eagle fans out there? I wish Auburn would return to the orange face masks of the Lionel James era(mid 1980s). Outside of Illinois, I don’t know of another D1 school which used orange face masks at the moment.

Just caught a few minutes of Sky Sports on Fox Soccer Channel and the announcer was recapping a rugby titlt between Edinburgh and Stade Francais. But–and it’s good to have teams that don’t change (and just as good to have teams that do, too)–the unis are pretty much the same today.
That classic game almost 40 years ago was at Alabama, though.

Alabama/Ole Miss is indeed a good uni match. Buckeyes/Badgers works for me too. Pitt/UConn is not good, but Navy and Rice is pretty tight. Only complaint with Rice is that their distinctive Old English SNOF is marred by the swoosh.

KU vs. Iowa State’s the best uni matchup, no question.
Oh, and ISU’s new unis look almost NOTHING like USC’s, they just have similar colors…you can complain about their resemblance to Ole Miss (or any other of Nike’s generic half-striped teams) if you want, but the USC comparison’s not even close.
Also, KU should ditch their stupid new Trajan font and go back to the old-school/Western-style script they used for decades previously.

I’m not great at logo design, so I just made up a blue jays style letter in a somewhat blocky shape- taking a little inspiration from the shape of the western style letters suggested in the original post. Basically, a two tone logo to go with a two tone hat.

Excellent designs! I most like the fencing S design of R. Scott Rogers, but think it needs something to make the blade connect to the S. It looks like it is oddly hovering over the “hand”.
Joseph Baker’s “sabre locked in hip holster” is my other fave. Spacing is great since it looks like the blade is held in by that angled corner.

I’m nominating Texas-Colorado for best uni matchup this weekend. Clear palette, nothing too wacky on either set, and clear delineation between the two at all points. Worst look is easily Northern Iowa v. North Dakota State. Each team looks bad on their own; next to each other it’s awful. Lots of green, lots of purple.

A few years ago the university FORCED all KU athletic teams to switch to a standardized (read: NY Giants) shade of blue and that HORRIFIC font -it’s called “Trajan”- on all jerseys and most merchandise.
Prior to that, the football team had gorgeous, navy-and-white uniforms with classic block letters and numerals (inspired by Coach Mangino’s years on staff at Oklahoma).
The men’s basketball team was also forced to abandon their distinctive, Old West-style font for letters and numbers…it was exclusive to KU for years, I believe.
This ALSO happened around the time KU switched from Nike to adidas -the year before, I think- but it was definitely mandated by the school, not a sponsor/manufacturer.
The change ALSO coincided with a competition to choose a new, standardized “KU” logo (the long-tail “K” on the current version is meant to evoke the rolling hills on campus in Lawrence.
Either way, it resulted in significant changes to the uniforms of both of the school’s flagship sports programs…not necessarily positive ones, either.

Lighting and different materials can change things. Notice how much darker the helmet of Charlie Tolar (taking the handoff) looks than his jersey. If he were the only figure we saw from that photo we might think the Oilers wore something other than the same powder blue they wore in the 60’s. And we’d be wrong.

When Kansas chose their university colors, they went for “Harvard crimson” and “Yale blue.” For their athletic teams, they seem to have gone with lighter shades (the University finally adopted these lighter shades as part of the branding process).

Also, Anson Mount, who was Playboy’s football “expert” was notorious for going against the grain and picking a longshot for the national title. He was almost always wrong.
Many suggested his picks were based on how big a “party school” the team represented. And sometimes it looked like that’s was EXACTLY what he was doing. He never, for example, pick Ohio State to do anything, quite possibly because Woody Hayes forbid his players from going to a Playboy photo shoot.
Evidently Woody wasn’t exactly pro-sex. Although, if he thought his players all were virgins, it might have been a sign he was out of touch and losing it long before he tried to hand-garrot on that Clemson player.

Oregon’s pants aren’t even close to the same color green as the helmets. They’re moss green, not forest/emerald green. Gives them sort of a “swamp” look.

I also think the English CBC could careless about amateur football. They don’t broadcast the CFL, so the CIS is an afterthought. However, TSN has finally picked up CIS football again and The Score has been showing games for years now, so the game is growing.
CBC does hold a license to launch an amateur sports channel. So perhaps they will show CIS games on it, but I fear the channel would be nothing more than an extended version of CBC Sports Saturday (i.e. Olympic sports only).
To answer your other question, curling isn’t that much more popular. In fact, CBC doesn’t carry curling either. TSN is the exclusive home to curling throughout the year.
