Two Fridays ago I spent a few hours up at the NBA offices, where they showed me all the new gear for this season. Some of the new designs have already been unveiled, like the new Sixers uniforms, Portland’s “Rip City” alternates, etc. — I won’t go into those here. I’m also going to save some of the changes for my NBA season-preview column on ESPN, which will be running in about two weeks. But here’s a smattering of news to get you in the mood:
• The Cavs are once again doing one of those “CavFanatic” alternate uni designs. This time it’s the late-’80s design in 1970s colors. Dig the special tagging.
• By now you’ve seen Charlotte’s new pinstriped uni set. What you probably haven’t seen is that they’ll once again be doing a NASCAR version. Again, special tagging.
• Two uni-borne memorials for the Pistons: a jersey patch for Chuck Daly and that rear-collar “Mr. D” for Bill Davidson. As I mentioned in the Ticker last week, the Davidson memorial will be permanent.
• Speaking of memorials, the Pacers have added a patch for Mel Simon, although they haven’t yet worn it in their preseason games.
• Here’s a good look at the anniversary patches being worn by the Cavs and Kings.
• The Heat have made three changes to their shorts. First, the old format of having the NBA logo on the left leg and the team logo on the right leg has been reversed (that’s so the shorts match up with the jersey, where the NBA logo appears on the right-chest area). Second, the team logo on the red alternate shorts has been changed from the flaming ball to the flaming “MH.” And third, team logos have been added to the waistband on all three shorts designs.
• Last year the Nuggets wore green jerseys as an environmental-awareness thing. That initiative has been retired for this season, although a broader uni-based environmental program may be put in place for 2010-11.
• These are the new compression shorts and calf sleeves that many players will be wearing. So if you see any players looking like extras from Tron, now you know why.
• The rim design has been updated. In addition to the superficial changes, the new version has breakaway functionality on the sides as well as the front.
That should be enough to keep you busy for now. More NBA news coming soon-ish.

Never thought they’d actually play a game: I was out having dinner with friends last night so I missed Matt Holiday’s rock the UFL’s auspicious debut. Fortunately, Marcus Hall took a bunch of screen shots and Mike Sullivan actually created a new blog just to catalog all his UFL complaints, so you can get a sense of just how tragic the whole affair was. Man, Jim Fassel must have burned a lot of NFL bridges in order to have been reduced to this.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Hey, check it out, it’s Elvis playing football. The “E.P. Entp.” on the jersey stands for “Elvis Presley Enterprises,” natch (great find by Bruce Menard). … Last year, Mike Walker of the Jags wore No. 81 and a “Walker” NOB. This year, however, he switched to No. 11 and “Sims-Walker” (the hyphenated NOB reflecting a nod to his late father) — at least for the first three games of the season. But last week he was back to just “Walker” (good work by Jonathon Binet). … Not uni-related but still very cool: a directory of world license plate styles (great find by Jordan Guthmann). … Two good items from Michael Jaworski: (1) The local history museum in Stuart, Florida, is currently featuring a very good baseball exhibit, with a nice photo gallery. And (2) Florida is adding a women’s lacrosse team in February, but they’re already playing exhibition games. “I assume these are their actual game uniforms, but don’t know for sure,” says Michael. “They have SNOB, although I wish it was on the front, above the uniform number, like in basketball.” … I’ve seen lots of girls’ teams wearing candy-cane sock stripes, but never a boys’ team — until now. That’s a Pop Warner squad from Watertown, New York (with thanks to Dave Northrop). … The Florida Panthers came up with rock tour-style T-shirts for their preseason schedule (as noted by Scott Marcusky). … Update to an item from yesterday: Here’s a color version of what the Padres would have looked like if they’d become the Washington Stars. As you can see, the color scheme would have been red, white, and blue — not purple and gold, as reader Richard Craig had stated yesterday (big, big thanks to fellow SABR member Maxwell Kates). … “I got married a few weeks ago,” says Doug McConnell. “When my fiancé, now wife, couldn’t find any suitable cake toppers, I decided to use these little guys instead.” … “Here is the logo for the 2018 and 2022 Japan World Cup bids,” says Jeremy Brahm. “I don’t know why they needed Astroboy, but he is the ‘Special Ambassador.’” … Incidentally, I recently interviewed Jeremy for a Uni Watch Profiles segment, which will be running soon. … The end zones in Denver this weekend will feature alternating filled-in diamonds — nice.

Looks like the new NBA rim would be stiffer, and less friendly to any shots touching the rim. It reminds me of the rims in the parks in NYC. Unless you are hitting net, the ball shoots off the rim about 20 feet…

With the emergence/inevitable failure of the UFL, it got me thinking: what if the UFL was attempted only 10 or 15 years ago.
Would we looking it up and comparing it to the WFL or WLAF from a uni perspective.
It seems that the lack of coverage and press from the older leagues (any sport) seems to make UniWatching a treasure hunt of some sort.
With all the video capture, documentation and air time (as little as it may be) and internet, we are quick to conclude what a massive uni fail this league is.
However, said time line above, would we be discussing about the “league that used the same template for all its teams uni’s” or “Why Neon green, Silver, blue and white shouldn’t be used in combo ever! (thus preventing the Great Seahawks Disaster of 09…)

I wonder if blogs were around in 1960, would the AFL get the exact same abuse we are giving the UFL today…
Another reason for concern about the UFL: the “New York” franchise plays their three home games in three different STATES: Meadowlands, NJ; Citi Field, NY; East Hartford, CT. Guess there’s no season ticket plan.
But if they think they have location trouble, that ain’t nothing compared to the Lingerie Football League. The “New York” team has left the Nassau Coliseum and will play their two home games in… Reading, PA. Their main rival is the “Philadelphia” team which is based in… Trenton, NJ. So the NY team plays in PA and the PA team in NJ. Smart.

I doubt it. Their unis (except Broncos, of course) weren’t anything radical. Broncos got a lot of grief back then, but I never saw anything aimed at any other team. Oh, maybe the Titans took some heat for that white-less first set because it was pretty dull. The Chargers, though, drew praise for the way they used the lightning bolt…right from the beginning.
If anything, unis were one of the things that were seen as a positive for the AFL.

I think the only way a new league is going to have a chance is if they use the original USFL concept and play during the spring. The UFL as it stands is a joke. The bad colors, the bad template, the 4 teams… it’s just pathetic.
I wouldn’t mind the uniform and colors they’re using for ONE team. But doing it for the whole league is just dumb. Four teams just isn’t enough for anything meaningful either.
I think you need at least 8 teams, and if you’re going to play during the NFL season, you don’t want teams in NFL cities. If you play in spring, then you can get away with sharing a city.
Hopefully something good will come out of this New USFL thing.

While not often noted as such, that truly was one of the all-time bonehead moves in pro sports. Had the USFL been content to remain the best show in town at their time of year, I think it might still be around. Either that or it would have disappeared, but with four to six of its teams long ago having been absorbed into the NFL.
Trump tried to sue for equality. Not likely in what is, truly, the entertainment industry.

Why doesn’t one of the new football league develop an affiliation with the NFL. The NHL has the AHL which in turn has the ECHL. This forms the basis of a fairly good minor league system. MLB has an even larger minor system. Even the NBA is developing a system.
I know that football is different because of the shorter season and intensity of the sport. But, seems to me that some players might develop better in a minor league type system that just being on the practice squad.
Just think. Calling up a player that has seen actual game play in the last two years will probably do better that someone that has been on the practice squad for that long.

good morning everybody.
I was at the caps/rangers game yesterday and I wanted to make a few comments about it.
1) helments in pre-game: (a few weeks ago this topic was taked about here) Last night 8 or 9 of the 18 skaters had “lids” while the entire ranger team was covered. As to the caps it was a mix of older and younger, russian and no russian (so it went across group lines)
2) the rbk jerseys — the flaps on the caps jersey didn’t look as noticable as the rangers.
3) I like the extra orange on the ref’s sleaves but I don’t like the arm #
4) redesign of the caps playoff and retire number banners… (ticker item on monday) I like them much better then what we had.
just my 2 cents. have a great rest of the day.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually like that wine & gold Cavs version of the 80s jersey. I think a few teams could benefit from bringing back retro colors to current looks: A’s, Padres, Angels (especially the cap), Astros, Brewers, Phillies, Mets, Seahawks, Rams, Saints, Eagles, Avalanche, Oilers, Stars, Devils, Penguins, Sabres, Mavericks, Timberwolves, Hawks, Warriors, Magic, Kings, Jazz & Wizards. Tho if I only had to pick one, it’d be the Padres to brown & Old Athletic Gold & I’d keep the sand roads, too.

Not really – you can’t send players back and forth between the NFL and NCAA the same way as between MLB and AAA.
I’ve wondered the same thing myself – what is it about baseball that having a multi-level minor league system works, but there’s not a similar system of minor league football.

You’d think so, but it’s actually very difficult.
Helmet and pants and tackle-twill numbers will react to lighting conditions differently. You can match different materials under certain conditions, but it’s tough to make them match under every single possible set of conditions.
If they match under sunlight, they might not match under artificial light. If they match to the naked eye, they might not match on a television screen. Too many variables.
The most obvious example is with white helmets, pants and jerseys in the NFL. Some games, they all match perfectly. Some games, one looks more ivory than the other.

I didn’t watch the UFL game from the start (come on, it was the night of the Jim and Pam wedding after all), but I’ll repeat what a friend texted me: you’d think with just four teams in the league they would come up with more contrasting uniforms. No problem finding the refs though!!! I did like the green pylons and Ricko’s right, the game wasn’t that bad.
on a different topic, I love license plates, mainly because my brother is a big time collector.

I’ve been a loyal reader of this site since the start, but I knew Paul and his lieutenants would slam any new league that comes along. Face it, you just want all sports to just be exactly the way they was when you were little boys forever. There was no way the UFL teams could dress that would make you happy, because their crime was to merely try to change the status quo. You wanted them to fail no matter what.
People here will insult me for saying that I like both old and new styles, that I like the color purple, that I love the ‘79 Astros. How about the hatred you white suburban middle-aged boys have for any uniform fashions preferred by, to put it bluntly, black urban teens? As if you own the sport, even though they actually have the skills to play it? I could explain why the UFL made the mistakes that it did, but what’s the point? Like all fake jocks, you’re bullies. You’re into sports because you like winning, and you love ridiculing “losers”. So you find as many kinds of losers as you can bloviate about for pleasure.
And I think the routine denigration of women’s sports leagues, both here and in the mass media, speaks for itself.
Personally I would have loved it if the UFL teams had all dressed in replicas of the All-American Football Conference uniforms of 1946, but it’s really damn trivial compared to having an inexpensive game to watch while your beloved Establishment leagues have become whores to the corporations that have driven this country into a ditch for quick profits. We now have two Americas, a plutocracy that gets luxury boxes at Cowboys Stadium by dint of the near-hereditary titles bestowed by Exxon, Halliburton, etc., and a peasantry that laps up the televised crumbs and promotional drippings as their taxes are used to build the stadiums. You love it. You heap profanities on any attempt to offer an alternative. And yes, the NCAA is even worse than the pros because of its limitless hypocrisy.
I would never, ever insult a fellow sports fan because of the way his team dresses, or because of the poverty of its circumstances.

Man, if they were really going to name them the Washington Stars, then I’m glad the Padres didn’t move. “Washington Stars” is the name the Washington Generals rejected because they were afraid it would make them sound too much like losers.
But that hat is awesome. It’s like the pinnacle of 1970s MLB cap design. You’ve got your contrast bill, you’ve got your white front panel, you’ve got your slapped-together cap logo that in no way relates to any other element of the uniform, you’ve got your highly saturated colors touching with no outlines or intermediating lighter colors. It’s so bad that it’s perfect, and I desperately wants me one of those. Paging New Era and the Cooperstown Collection!
Bonus double-extra uni regret: If the relocation had happened, Washington would have had an NL team during the 1976 Bicentennial, and so they would have made three-stripe pillbox caps with that logo. That is now my new ultimate holy grail ballcap.
(Is a uni design from the past that didn’t exist but plausibly could have a hypoback?)

As for the rest of that epistle, ummm… most of the negative UFL comments stem from the fact that on TV, it was hard to tell the two teams apart, not that the teams weren’t dressed like the Providence Steamrollers and the Portsmouth Spartans. How expensive would it have been for this poor, downtrodden league to dress them in uniforms with contrasting colors?

Nobody is insulting the UFL for anything except having ugly, ugly uniforms and having a braindead marketing scheme.
The UFL’s uniforms are ugly. Doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, traditional or modern. They are a disaster. Not everything looks good, and this site exists to discuss if uniforms and sports related things look good or not. If you’re expecting us to say “It’s okay, they’re just different, but nothing looks bad”, you have another think coming.
Ugly is ugly, new league or not. This site slams a lot of uniforms in established leagues too.

Because some of us (most of us?) think designing all the unis off the UFL logo is a mistake…(that’s opinion, in some cases professional opinion)…

I would. Ugly is ugly. I’d hate to think that if you were a football coach, you’d trot your team out in neon green jerseys with bubble gum pink pants & shoes. Sports designs fail when fashion is brought into the process. Like let’s take the mid-1980s White Sox batting practice jacket. It’s navy blue, got the white silhouetted batter logo on the left chest, and it’s got clean red, white & navy collar, cuff & waist single stripes. It’d be a classic if it didn’t have that stupid bright white zipper that extends to an “80s shirt up-collar ” design. Blech.
