Bruce Menard recently informed me that the folks at Heritage Auction Galleries have a ton of good stuff in their current auction catalog. Here’s a sampling:
• According to the auction listing, Robin Roberts wore this throwback replica while throwing out the first pitch at the 1976 All-Star Game. I’ve never heard about this before. Anyone know more?
• Totally digging the typography on this 1929 World Series program cover. And dig that little bear!
• And speaking of World Series programs, here’s a doozy.
• Here’s a rarity: A Pro Bowl helmet from the days when the players wore conference-specific headgear.
• Love all the quote-marked nicknames in this poster.
• I’m always a sucker for these college all-star uniforms. Rare to see one that includes the pants and the helmet. And man, those “4″s!
• Oh man, check out these killer Giants programs. Interesting uni note: Check out the shin of the Jints player in the lower-right illo — looks like he has a pad under his sock.
• Oh, for the days when the Bears played a beer-sponsored team.
• When I was at the National in Cleveland a few months ago, one of the most drool-inducing items I saw was this Tulsa Oilers hockey jersey. Here it is, up for auction.
• Never seen anything like this Ottawa Senators jacket or this Blackhawks jacket.
• Also new to me: This amazing Red Wings cardigan, with a white version to boot. Looks like they have the American flag facing the wrong way on the left sleeve, though.
• Remember the barber pole design that the Blackhawks wore in the Winter Classic? Here’s the original. But I think I like this design even better.
• If you’ve been wondering what to get me for my half-birthday (coming up next Monday, don’tcha know), this jacket wouldn’t be a bad place to start.
• Worst hockey jersey ever? Eh, close enough.
• Best hockey program cover ever? Eh, close enough.
• Lots of great ticket stubs on offer, including tix from the 1971 World Series, the ’51 Series, the ’57 Series, the 1962 Mets home opener, and more.
• Gorgeous hockey officiating sweaters here and here
• Not sure what this has to do with sports, but it sure is purty.
Want to see more? You can download the auction catalog as a PDF here.
And look, there are still a few hairs I haven’t pulled out: My Earthlink e-mail finally appears to be behaving, so forget about the alternate address I’ve been using for the past few days and go back to my usual addresses. And please keep your fingers crossed.

About Time: Big congrats to Jerry Dior, who’s finally been recognized as the designer of the MLB logo. He’ll be honored on the field at Yankee Stadium today and at Shea on Friday. I’ve written about Jerry several times (to see those columns, look here and here) and have always been impressed by what a gentleman he is — a class act all the way. I’m glad he’s finally gotten the recognition he deserves.

Research Reminder: My thanks to everyone who contributed thoughts, anecdotes, and historical notes regarding football gloves yesterday. If you have anything to contribute that would help document the history and culture of this largely overlooked uni element, don’t be shy.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Hadn’t noticed until now that Wisconsin is using those rounded-corner nameplates. Good view of them in the next-to-last photo in this gallery (as spotted by Ben Simon). … According to the fourth graf of this story, the Predators’ new alt jersey includes “a dark checkerboard pattern that can only be seen at close range” (with thanks to Nick Church). … You may know that Chad Ochocinco wore gold shoes and gold gloves on Sunday, but did you know he also had two fingers taped together? Never seen a receiver do that before. Anyone have any insights? (As spotted by Bob Wilzbach.) … Lenny Dykstra, financial genius. … A freelance designer is suing NYU for allegedly stealing her logo design. … Now that’s a helmet (with thanks to David Cline). … New Irish national rugby kit (with thanks to Joe Alvernaz). … Colorado will be wearing 1937 throwbacks this weekend. Additional info here, and there’s a photo gallery here. … Dave Forbes notes that Jeff Garcia previously wore No. 7 with the Eagles but will have to take a different number in Philly this time around because Michael Vick is now wearing No. 7. … Corey Zoldan reports that the following note appeared in the U. of Maryland school paper: “The [baseball] team will be ditching its red and yellow jerseys in favor of pinstripes, because [coach] Bakich wants to be able to sell future recruits on the opportunity to ‘play in the Terrapin pinstripes.’” Uh, right. … What’s worse than an Argentine soccer team with Walmart-sponsored jerseys? An Argentine soccer team with Walmart-sponsored socks, which must surely qualify as a new low for civilization (with thanks to Dario Moretti, writing all the way from South America). … We’ve talked several times over the years about the ribbed seams found on some Bears’ linemen’s shoulder areas. Now Aaron Schlesinger notes that the Eagles appear to be doing something similar. … Hey look, it’s minor league hockey. And the refs are wearing those stupid orange sleeve stripes that debuted during last season’s all-star game. … Good article about Vanderbilt’s merit decals here (with thanks to Lee Wilds). … Last week’s New Yorker featured two cartoons — appearing on facing pages! — that were very Ticker-worthy.
Highest Recommendation: I have a good friend — let’s call him Jim — who I’ve known for over a decade. Jim is a trained engineer and an experienced manager who’s particularly strong on strategy, marketing, product development, and finance. I’ve never met Jim’s parents, but they sure must have raised him right, because Jim is — and I’m not exaggerating here — the nicest, most congenial, most stand-up guy I’ve ever known. Really. In other words, he’s as much of an asset in the clubhouse as his is on the field.
Jim is currently between jobs. I can say with absolute certainty that he’d be a major plus for any company. If you’d like to see his résumé and some position papers he’s written, please get in touch and I’ll send them to you. Thanks.

Chad 85 probably has a jammed finger, athletic trainers (which I am) call this tape job “buddy taping.” We tape the injured finger to the unaffected next digit to give it support. A common thing in football.

I like the Colorado Buffs alt uni. Ironic that both Boulder and Denver will wear yellow/gold jerseys this fall after a long absence. The Buffs would probably fare as well with the 1937 players as they are with the kids out there this year.

Unless your links are inverted, the one you like better is the basic design used in the Winter Classic. It also was used before the one you style as “the original” (The black, red, and beige was used from 1935-1937; the first red, white, and black barberpole design was used in the 1937-38 season)

Love all the quote-marked nicknames in this poster
This brought to mind my first baseball glove, “autographed” by Roberto, “Bob”, Clemente. Even at that age I found this weird, because I never heard him referred to as Bob. Is this just an attempt to gringo-ize him or did he really go by that name? I know some of you burghers out there can educate me on this.
BTW, I believe the glove was manufactured by Franklin and was purchased circa 1960. Think it might have had a “deep-well” pocket, “ed-u-cated” heel or “advanced” web. Now if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go bounce a ball off the wall and practice on my grounders.

The NYU case sounds interesting – most of the other logo-theft cases I’ve heard of involve unsolicited creations – some fan voluntarily submitting a logo. This is the first I’ve heard of someone being ASKED to create a logo, doing so, and then complaining afterward. If she was a paid employee and didn’t have the foresight to ask for more money, royalties, etc BEFORE submitting the logo, I can’t imagine how she has a case.
Furthermore, that bobcat logo is hideous. It looks more like an alien-elf hybrid.

I used to love seeing Ken Burrough of the Oilers, and even Jim Otto of the Raiders, wearing that number. What’s wrong with it – do the leagues think it’s bad for the players’ self esteem or something?

Interesting – that’s the wrong flag beside the US Flag. I don’t believe Canada ever used that flag.

I don’t have a problem with Chad or his name either – he’s kinda harmless, compared to some other diva receivers. But, Citi Field is New Shea’s legal name as well. We give people and buildings nicknames all the time, so while I respect and acknowledge his choice of name, he also has to realize some people will still call him by his old one and he should have a sense of humor about it. That doesn’t mean you SHOULD make a shirt, just having some fun.
I’ve been called all sorts of things. The ones that aren’t derogatory, even if they’re not my first choice of names, are fine with me. As long as people acknowledge my original name as well.
And to answer a question posed about a different name, I’m pretty sure Roberto Clemente never went by “Bob” or “Bobby.” The baseball cards and radio announcers used those names, but I don’t know what his reaction to them were – I loaned my Clemente biography to a friend before I got to read it.

Poor analogy. The term “Citi Field” isn’t a name — it’s a business arrangement between two mega-corporations and an affront to the notion that a ballpark is a public space with shared civic value. Resisting the use of that term, as I will continue to do, isn’t just being cranky — it’s a political statement based on specific principles. (You may not agree with those principles, but that’s a different issue.)
I’ll say it again: Choosing how we call ourselves is one of the few very personal things we get to control in this life. Honoring that choice, even if it seems like a silly choice, seems like simple courtesy to me.

After the 1899 season, the Washington Senators of the National League folded in the 12-8 contraction, when the American League began play in 1901 Washington, not wanting to confuse fans with the previous franchise, began calling themselves the Nationals in 1905. However, the fans never took to the name and called them the Senators. In 1912, when Griffith was named manager, newspaper writers referred to them as the ‘Grifs’. In the early 1950s the team changed logos to one incorporating ‘NATIONALS’ within it, after the fans continued to reject the name they were officially renamed Senators in 1956.

Same thing a few years later when Angel Martinez asked to be called Sandy Hernandez (his middle rather than his first name).

To answer the question on Robin Roberts’ “1876″ uniform, the National League celebrated its’ centennial that year, and for the Phillies, their annual Old-Timers’ Game became a celebrity game with the rules based off those that were in 1876. Not only did former baseball players play, but former football and basketball players, a couple of the Flyers and media personalities played in the game complete with old-fashioned “bottle bats” and the late Thatcher Longstreth (who was a “Philadelphia Lawyer” on Saturday Night Dead) umpired the game.

Very weird. Considering I stayed around the Green Bay area during the summer and would see Ahman Green’s “Batmobile” (jazzed up Ford Mustang made to look like the Cape Crusader’s ride). There is kind of a quick turnaround as well. Maybe like two weeks. They do a bang up job cleaning, but in all fairness the players basically just sleep in there. Most of their time is spent at the Hutson Center, or at Lambeau.

Well, even if they’re familar with them I’m not sure the students in Bourbonais actually have the big screens in their dorm room when the school is in session.
And they’re a total no-alcohol campus down there in Bourbonais. So I’m giving them a grade of “religous plus”.
I know people who have graduated from Norbert’s as well as several other religious-based schools around the midwest. FWLIW, their memories of campus life include a lot of stories of “underprivliged” kids who got in without a lot of money: quite frankly I don’t remember nearly as many from my public school.

I wonder how many UWers know the Packers used to split their home schedule 50/50 between Green Bay and Milwaukee County Stadium? That policy, and the Packers being publicly owned, are a huge part of why “Green Bay” managed to stay in the NFL and why, in truth, they are Wisconsin team…even if the folks in Green Bay don’t like to hear that. And I’m NOT dissing them, I LOVE that Green Bay is still in the league. It’s one of the great things in sport. It’s like if the Fort Wayne Pistons (one of the GREAT sports names, btw) were still in the NBA. Just saying a market that small couldn’t have sustained an NFL team without a larger market like Milwaukee being part of its fan (and ticket) base all these years.
And don’t start arguing. You know it’s true. Would have been like trying to keep an NFL franchise in Bismarck. And again, I LOVE that they’ve been able to stay in Green Bay. It’s like history right there in front of us every time we hear the name.

Ricko, I know a guy who’s a Packer fan because of those Milwaukee games: he’s the youngest of a group of brothers and one time two older brothers were going up to Milwaukee “for the game” (and because the drinking age in Wisconsin was 18 in those days). Their parents told them they were responsible for their youngest sibling that day: they grudingly took him along and accidently converted the impressionable youngster to being a Packer fan. (We’ve often remarked that it would have been better for him if the drinking had imprinted that day instead of the Packers.)
BTW: one of the Chicago papers noted the number of Bears/Packers season openers in Green Bay down thru the years and said it was because Halas didn’t want to go to Green Bay when it was cold. Several people pointed out that maybe it was the cold; and maybe it was the fact that Wrigley was unavailable that might have kept the “open the season in Green Bay” tradition alive. :-)

re:art project of the revolution
so i am working on this piece, and i want to involve the readership of UW. but thing is, i don’t want to divulge the details. suffice it to say this, i will be working on this until next july 4th, and it is quite involved. from time to time i am going to post this request, maybe once a month, but if something strikes you, send it to me anytime at rpmarshallart@gmail.com (let’s not muddy up the boards). this might blow up my interwebs, but fuck it. what do i need from you? song titles. what kind of song titles? up to you. any kind of music? yes. is there a theme? no. why should i do this? then don’t. but i do need an a and b side for the artist. for instance, i might say the flying burrito brothers the streets of baltimore & drug store truck driving man, or daniel johnston speeding motorcycle & devil town, whatever. i don’t want 35 suggestions from one person, just one, two if you must, if over time i have a few suggestions from you, that’s fine. okay? okay. let’s see what’chu got.

JMHO, but it can be more social than 12-inch. There’s certainly a number of cutthroat leagues in both varieties; but I think this one goes co-ed that much more easily than the 12-inch variety.
And there’s definitely a long history of factory or company sponsored teams: probably more than a few colorful uni’s out there from the 40’s/50’s/60’s era.

Bottom Line : The Mustard Gold was darker, and the “Silver” on the Uni was likely more of a darker, duller Gray. As to the helmet, I have no clue.
I had a Colorado Buff Jersey and Pants combo purchased on EBAY for $200.00 7-8 years ago, from the Whizzer White era, that was worn either just before or just after the uni featured here. I verified the style as I saw a Whizzer White pictured in that same uni playing for the Buffs in other photos.
The jersey had no “Friction Strips”, but was a Mustard Gold jersey (similar Gold to this 2009 Throwback, but a lot darker in color, but not quite a true Old Gold), with smallish Black felt numerals (#12) with no trim, with a Battleship Gray stripe running down the side of each long sleeve, from the collar to the end of the sleeve. The jersey was a very strong, wool material similar to a thick modern Rugby jersey material, with the Gray stripe a looser knitted wool. It had a Colorado Sporting goods store tag, and I forget if it had a manufacterer tag.
The pants were a Dark Khaki/Gold, a bit darker than the jersey, made in a very strong, very thin gaberdine canvas, with full dark brown leather pads covering both knees, and with the same wool knit Battleship Gray stripes (from the jersey) running down the back of each leg. The pants had a national company manufactering tag, if you told me I would remember – the manufacterer that had sort of a circular logo with info printed in the circle.
Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina did to it what 70 years of hoarding and trading of hands and wear could not do, and I was never able to recover it from the wreckage of my house, as it was in a Chest of Drawers buried under mounds of furniture after standing in the Katrina funk water for two-plus weeks. I couldn’t get to it.
I will say this, the knit wool material of that jersey, even after 70 years, was strong enough to tie to a trailer and tow with. It was dense and strong unlike even the better rugby material sold today.

Question on the Seahawks’ practice jerseys:
I noticed in the photos of the red jersey and the white jersey that the NFL logo on the neck seems to be “blacked out.” (okay, in the spirit of all the recent stadium dress-up days, it appeared “redded” and “whited” out)
Does the NFL have an official “search engine,” such as Google or Yahoo!? Is this why the NFL logo is minimized?

For my third post, I would like to mention that the NFL logo has clearly been “redded,” “whited” and, yes, even “blued” out from all the Seahawks’ practice jerseys.
This can’t be am coincidence.
