Bruce Menard recently informed me that the folks at Heritage Auction Galleries have a ton of good stuff in their current auction catalog. Here’s a sampling:
• According to the auction listing, Robin Roberts wore this throwback replica while throwing out the first pitch at the 1976 All-Star Game. I’ve never heard about this before. Anyone know more?
• Totally digging the typography on this 1929 World Series program cover. And dig that little bear!
• And speaking of World Series programs, here’s a doozy.
• Here’s a rarity: A Pro Bowl helmet from the days when the players wore conference-specific headgear.
• Love all the quote-marked nicknames in this poster.
• I’m always a sucker for these college all-star uniforms. Rare to see one that includes the pants and the helmet. And man, those “4″s!
• Oh man, check out these killer Giants programs. Interesting uni note: Check out the shin of the Jints player in the lower-right illo — looks like he has a pad under his sock.
• Oh, for the days when the Bears played a beer-sponsored team.
• When I was at the National in Cleveland a few months ago, one of the most drool-inducing items I saw was this Tulsa Oilers hockey jersey. Here it is, up for auction.
• Never seen anything like this Ottawa Senators jacket or this Blackhawks jacket.
• Also new to me: This amazing Red Wings cardigan, with a white version to boot. Looks like they have the American flag facing the wrong way on the left sleeve, though.
• Remember the barber pole design that the Blackhawks wore in the Winter Classic? Here’s the original. But I think I like this design even better.
• If you’ve been wondering what to get me for my half-birthday (coming up next Monday, don’tcha know), this jacket wouldn’t be a bad place to start.
• Worst hockey jersey ever? Eh, close enough.
• Best hockey program cover ever? Eh, close enough.
• Lots of great ticket stubs on offer, including tix from the 1971 World Series, the ’51 Series, the ’57 Series, the 1962 Mets home opener, and more.

About Time: Big congrats to Jerry Dior, who’s finally been recognized as the designer of the MLB logo. He’ll be honored on the field at Yankee Stadium today and at Shea on Friday. I’ve written about Jerry several times (to see those columns, look here and here) and have always been impressed by what a gentleman he is — a class act all the way. I’m glad he’s finally gotten the recognition he deserves.

Jim is a trained engineer and an experienced manager who’s particularly strong on strategy, marketing, product development, and finance. I’ve never met Jim’s parents, but they sure must have raised him right, because Jim is — and I’m not exaggerating here — the nicest, most congenial, most stand-up guy I’ve ever known. Really. In other words, he’s as much of an asset in the clubhouse as his is on the field.

Chad 85 probably has a jammed finger, athletic trainers (which I am) call this tape job “buddy taping.” We tape the injured finger to the unaffected next digit to give it support. A common thing in football.

I like the Colorado Buffs alt uni. Ironic that both Boulder and Denver will wear yellow/gold jerseys this fall after a long absence. The Buffs would probably fare as well with the 1937 players as they are with the kids out there this year.

Unless your links are inverted, the one you like better is the basic design used in the Winter Classic. It also was used before the one you style as “the original” (The black, red, and beige was used from 1935-1937; the first red, white, and black barberpole design was used in the 1937-38 season)

Love all the quote-marked nicknames in this poster
This brought to mind my first baseball glove, “autographed” by Roberto, “Bob”, Clemente. Even at that age I found this weird, because I never heard him referred to as Bob. Is this just an attempt to gringo-ize him or did he really go by that name? I know some of you burghers out there can educate me on this.
BTW, I believe the glove was manufactured by Franklin and was purchased circa 1960. Think it might have had a “deep-well” pocket, “ed-u-cated” heel or “advanced” web. Now if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go bounce a ball off the wall and practice on my grounders.

The NYU case sounds interesting – most of the other logo-theft cases I’ve heard of involve unsolicited creations – some fan voluntarily submitting a logo. This is the first I’ve heard of someone being ASKED to create a logo, doing so, and then complaining afterward. If she was a paid employee and didn’t have the foresight to ask for more money, royalties, etc BEFORE submitting the logo, I can’t imagine how she has a case.
Furthermore, that bobcat logo is hideous. It looks more like an alien-elf hybrid.

Interesting – that’s the wrong flag beside the US Flag. I don’t believe Canada ever used that flag.
There were a variety of flags used between 1867 and 1965 that looked similar but all of them had a coat of arms on the field of the flag.

Just a reminder, Full Color Football, The History of the American Football League, airs tonight on Showtime. First time I heard of it was from Curtis, over at Helmet Hut, so they had a hand in this, what looks to be a wonderful 5 week series on the AFL.

To answer the question on Robin Roberts’ “1876″ uniform, the National League celebrated its’ centennial that year, and for the Phillies, their annual Old-Timers’ Game became a celebrity game with the rules based off those that were in 1876. Not only did former baseball players play, but former football and basketball players, a couple of the Flyers and media personalities played in the game complete with old-fashioned “bottle bats” and the late Thatcher Longstreth (who was a “Philadelphia Lawyer” on Saturday Night Dead) umpired the game.

I do not have Showtime now. I wish I still did. I am wondering how much different film they will use. I have done screen grabs from the old AFL teams. Those were done from NFL films work. SO I am wondering if they are only going to use what I have already seen from NFL films. I can not imagine they have other film. Unless it is like the When it was a game series and people filmed color footage.

Those were the only magnetic schedules still left on the fridge, so sorry for the absence of ‘04 and ‘05.

(We’ve often remarked that it would have been better for him if the drinking had imprinted that day instead of the Packers.)
BTW: one of the Chicago papers noted the number of Bears/Packers season openers in Green Bay down thru the years and said it was because Halas didn’t want to go to Green Bay when it was cold. Several people pointed out that maybe it was the cold; and maybe it was the fact that Wrigley was unavailable that might have kept the “open the season in Green Bay” tradition alive. :-)

JMHO, but it can be more social than 12-inch. There’s certainly a number of cutthroat leagues in both varieties; but I think this one goes co-ed that much more easily than the 12-inch variety.
And there’s definitely a long history of factory or company sponsored teams: probably more than a few colorful uni’s out there from the 40’s/50’s/60’s era.

I had a Colorado Buff Jersey and Pants combo purchased on EBAY for $200.00 7-8 years ago, from the Whizzer White era, that was worn either just before or just after the uni featured here. I verified the style as I saw a Whizzer White pictured in that same uni playing for the Buffs in other photos.
The jersey had no “Friction Strips”, but was a Mustard Gold jersey (similar Gold to this 2009 Throwback, but a lot darker in color, but not quite a true Old Gold), with smallish Black felt numerals (#12) with no trim, with a Battleship Gray stripe running down the side of each long sleeve, from the collar to the end of the sleeve. The jersey was a very strong, wool material similar to a thick modern Rugby jersey material, with the Gray stripe a looser knitted wool. It had a Colorado Sporting goods store tag, and I forget if it had a manufacterer tag.
The pants were a Dark Khaki/Gold, a bit darker than the jersey, made in a very strong, very thin gaberdine canvas, with full dark brown leather pads covering both knees, and with the same wool knit Battleship Gray stripes (from the jersey) running down the back of each leg. The pants had a national company manufactering tag, if you told me I would remember – the manufacterer that had sort of a circular logo with info printed in the circle.
Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina did to it what 70 years of hoarding and trading of hands and wear could not do, and I was never able to recover it from the wreckage of my house, as it was in a Chest of Drawers buried under mounds of furniture after standing in the Katrina funk water for two-plus weeks. I couldn’t get to it.
I will say this, the knit wool material of that jersey, even after 70 years, was strong enough to tie to a trailer and tow with. It was dense and strong unlike even the better rugby material sold today.

Question on the Seahawks’ practice jerseys:
I noticed in the photos of the red jersey and the white jersey that the NFL logo on the neck seems to be “blacked out.” (okay, in the spirit of all the recent stadium dress-up days, it appeared “redded” and “whited” out)
Does the NFL have an official “search engine,” such as Google or Yahoo!? Is this why the NFL logo is minimized?
