[Editor's Note: A year ago, Chris Markham showed everyone how to make a helmet cup holder. Today he's back with his latest DIY project.]
By Chris Markham
Here in Rochester, we don’t really have a hometown MLB team root for. While most people generally root for the Yankees or Mets, we’re actually situated much closer to the Blue Jays, Indians, and Pirates. So while growing up in the early 1990s, I had my football and hockey teams — the Bills and Sabres — but I didn’t a baseball team. Then came the 1993 expansion Rockies and Marlins. Long story short, I ended up picking the Rockies.
Fast forward to today: After 15 years of watching baseball, I have discovered that I enjoy the distinctive elements of a team’s scoreboard. The arches at Yankee Stadium, the NYC skyline at Shea, the pinwheels at Comi-, uh Cellular Field, the Royals’ crown, the prowling tigers at Comerica Park, the birds in St. Louis, etc.
But since I’m a Rockies fan, my favorite is the mountains at Coors Field. I’ve always liked the mountain logo separated from the arch. I don’t know why they don’t use that in more places. Plus the baseball is also a clock — clever. Anyway, one day I decided I was going to make a replica of it for my “man cave” basement.
First, I imported the Rockies logo into Illustrator and started from there. I removed the Colorado arch, arched the Rockies text and recolored it. I picked up two 30″ x 20″, 1/2″-thick pieces of poster board (seemed like the easiest and cheapest option) and the necessary paints. Then I used Illustrator to size the mountains at 28″ x 14″ and set it to an X,Y coordinate of 0,0. This made it possible for me to get the X,Y coordinates of each line, map it on the poster board, play connect the dots, and cut out the finished shape.
For the letters, I printed out an outline of each letterform, traced it onto the other piece of poster board, and cut out each letter individually.
Since the mountains are the biggest part of this project, I put painter’s tape over all of the parts that are not purple and used a small paint roller to paint over the entire mountain range. After removing the tape, I had to accurately get the stitching of the ball on the mountain, I printed out a to-scale outline of the ball, cut out the stitching on the piece of paper, and traced it on the poster board. Then I painted the rest of the mountain and letters.
Last but not least, the clock. I went out to my local Wal*Mart and picked up some cheap clock for $4. I took off the face of clock and was left with the battery pack and hands. In Illustrator, I found the exact center of the ball was made a hole all the way through the poster board. I then traced around the battery pack, dug a hole in the poster board, and dropped the clock in.
So here is the finished product (plus a side view). It wasn’t very expensive to create and it makes a great addition to my room. Maybe my next project will be getting it to light up.
Paul here. Pretty cool stuff, right? And as long as we’re talking DIY, James Huening reports that he took a cheap Chisox replica jersey and turned it into a 1950s/’60s version (“complete with yellowed fabric aging effect,” he notes), plus he turned some gym shorts into Bears pants. “These are more ‘entry-level’ or ‘remedial’ than some of the masterpieces you’ve featured in the past,” he says, “but I’m pretty proud of them, especially since I have virtually zero artistic talent.” Lots of additional photos here.

Why yes, I am a bit cranky today, why do you ask?: Major e-mail problems here at Uni Watch HQ. I’ll spare you the details and just say this: (a) If you happen to see an Earthlink executive walking by, please apprehend him as violently as possible and then give me a call. (b) If you’ve sent me some good material within the past 36 hours and haven’t seen it in the Ticker, it’s not because I’m ignoring you. Probably. And (c) Until further notice, please use this address for all Uni Watch communiqués: beerframeguy@yahoo.com.

Uni Watch Stirrup Club Update: Comrade Robert Marshall has returned from the front lines of the hosiery wars with a stirring report. I hereby surrender the floor to him and urge you to pay close heed to his words:
Fearless leader preaches the gospel of toeless hosiery in the daily Watcher, and I believe we, as cadre in colouful strype, have furthered the cause on ball fields throughout the land. Let us continue with four new choices to further the tapestry of the movement.
Now the bad news. Unfortunately, I not only have the writing style of a lunatic but the fiscal sense of an artist. The short version: I have lost a dollar-plus per pair for the last couple hundred pair. Please do not try to make anything up to me — the people who will want to do that are exactly the type of people to whom I am happy to say this: It was a necessary evil within the revolution, so let us continue to look forward in this fight. From each according to his styrrup, to each according to his strype.
However, the directions/prices for ordering have changed slightly — please check out the new procedures here.
I’m going to overrule Robert on his “Don’t bother to throw in a few extra bucks” admonition. In other words, please do throw in a few extra bucks for him. His envelope-stuffing and post office-schlepping alone are worth it, to say nothing of his hot new teevee commercial.
Last chance to make me proud: Couldn’t believe nobody responded to this on Wednesday, and I figure you can’t all be Dave Matthews fans, so let’s try this again: One of history’s most entertainingly sociopathic bands is playing at Southpaw tomorrow night, and I have two extra tickets that I’d be happy to sell at a discount. Remember, my regular e-mail’s all messed up, so use this address if you’re interested in the tix.
Uni Watch News Ticker: You may have noticed that Oregon’s offense and defense trotted onto the field last week in uni-numerical order (and yes, they have multiple players with the same number, but that’s nothing new). What’s more interesting is that they also went in numerical order when leaving the field after the first half (as spotted and photographed by Mike Kingery). … Holy NASCAR — literally (with thanks to Ryan Connelly). … The Dolphins have signed up for Club Douchebag. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Yesterday’s Ticker mention of Shoelace Robinson, who never ties his cleats, reminded Graham Bakay of former NHL linesman Ray Scapinello, who often didn’t tie his skates. Bizarre. … So here’s the latest design revision of that stupid-ass basketball arena they’re trying to build down the road from my house. Nice to see that the architects are taking inspiration from such highbrow sources. … Exactly one entertaining thing has happened at Shea all season long, but what’s even more entertaining is the guy’s “punishment”: He’s banned from the stadium for a year. Doesn’t this seem more like a gift than a sanction? … Some examples of logo creep are even stupider than others (thanks, Kirsten). … Kyle Hinstorff notes that Georgia Stech’s single-digit TV numbers are off-center, almost as if they were two-digit numbers with the first numeral removed. … I collect salesman sample catalogs and love neon signage, so it’d be nice if one of y’all could get me this for Xmas (Kirsten already did her part by bringing it to my attention). … Neckwear note from Matthew Porges, who points out that Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth’s neckties matched the Titans’ and Steelers’ team colors, respectively, last night. … Here’s a great little item: When the Falcons wear their throwbacks on September 20th, they’ll also have a throwback ticket design. That news comes from Todd Vaught, who came up with the idea and whose design firm, Sky Design, executed it. “The tickets will show the old uniforms, explain the reason for the gold stripe on the helmet, etc.,” he writes. “We’re doing it die-cut with scalloped corners like old-school tickets. They’re being printed now.” … Florida A&M has some seriously weird pants. … The mighty Fleer Sticker Project has a great post about the cloth MLB team logo patches that were packaged in boxes of Sugar Crisp in 1955. Details here.

Under Bud Grant, every year the Vikings spent one entire early training camp session devoted to “how we stand for the national anthem”. Helmet on left hip, feet pointed a certain angle, stand along this line, spaced just so far from the player on either side of you, etc. Meticulous planning. And the players did it that way, perfectly, every single time the anthem was played, without being told. Because that’s what you did if you were a Minnesota Viking. Period.

Love the scoreboard, Chris. Makes me wish the Nats had a similarly distinctive scoreboard that could fit on a wall in miniature. But your excellent Rockies DIY has me thinking of applying your how-to to just the curly-W clock portion of the Nats scoreboard. I have some clock-sized empty wall space in my den — I’m old school, so I don’t have a man-cave, I have a den — between Penxa paintings of Johnson and Gibson.
Also, it can be stipulated that Bud Grant was a god. And a really sweet guy, at least to children; after he retired, he used to come to my elementary school in Eden Prairie to pick up his granddaughter once a week or so, and not many adults were ever friendlier to little children than Coach Grant. Not so sweet to the men he coached; some of the black players used to joke about Coach Grant trying to turn them white with his long outdoor practices in the Minnesota winter.

Most effective college nickname ever?
(From the perspective of college age males, that is.)
Tufts Jumbos.
Coeds can choose their teeshirts/sweatshirts
(“Tufts” or “Jumbos”) appropriately.

re: Leatherheads:
I wish it was a better movie too, but I do find a guilty pleasure in it, but according to this, there might be a reason certain “details” had to be left out:
(From IMDB)
In an interview on The Late Show with David Letterman, Clooney mentioned the plot is loosely based on George Halas’s signing of University of Illinois football star Harold “Red” Grange. Grange was signed to a contract with the Chicago Bears in 1925, the day after his final game at Illinois. Some have wondered why the football team depicted in the movie is named the Bulldogs. Duluth’s 1926 National Football League franchise was actually called the Duluth Eskimos, a team that still technically exists in the form of the Washington Redskins. However the team is loosely based on the Eskimos. Clooney later explained that “We wanted to call them the Eskimos, but because we were drinking in the movie, the NFL said we couldn’t use the actual names”.

It’s too bad Georgia Tech downgraded their uniforms starting last year, with the silly striping patterns which have become popular in college football. I’d like to see Tech return to a more traditional look, but add a yellow jacket logo to either the sleeves or pants.

Does anyone here know what the Bruins design is based on. To me, it looks like a bastardization of the crest from the 1948-48 sweaters, sans 24 and 49 and the sweater, though with various striping patterns, from 1955-67. It seems like they took a page out of the Blackhawks book, with the mongrelization of non-concurrent designs. Just ordered a pair of Pilots stirrups and cannot wait.

Why the gold/sepia tint to everything? Yeah, old photos look like that, but the world didn’t.
Really, where’s the story arc?
Why is every game played in mud?
Relies WAY to much on period music to establish the era, instead the script.
Oh, wow, the “big game” ends with fiendishly clever play that, in real life, quite probably could never happened. Not that I expect reality in comedy, but I do expect good, inventive comedy.
The “Red Grange” character? Actor looks FAR too much like a basketball player (tall and thin) rather than a mega-star football player.
More development of some of the possibly quite funny minor characters would have given the film a whole lot more depth and charm. Hell, even the BATBOY got his due in THE NATURAL.

Is it me, or do college teams with gold in their scheme have a more liberal interpretation of what their school colors are than other schools when it comes to apparel?
For my school, Georgia Tech, you can go to their official shop and buy a school bus yellow hat to go with a Vegas gold jersey, an old gold flag and a banana yellow t-shirt. Just a handful of schools that I have noticed with the same problem are Wake Forest, Notre Dame, and Baylor. I am sure that there are lots of other examples.
How come these GOLD schools aren’t more strict about what color represents their sports programs? Just curious if anyone else gets bothered about this like I do, or if I’m the oddball. :) I’m betting on ‘oddball’.

I believe you’re a evenball-at least I hope so.
While not as passionate as you sound on the subject, this question of what is “gold” has entered my mind as well. My favorite professional grid teams colors are officially Burgundy and Gold. There hasn’t been any metallic looking gold in their uni since the 70’s. I believe the yellower “gold” has more pop on the TV screen, but those more knowledgeable than I can probably expand on that. Do not give up your quest!

The capitalized last letter when the middle is lc is just wrong from any standpoint.
The last-letter-large thing when all the letters are caps is about as old as written language, so there’s little use arguing against it now. (Seriously, I’ve seen the equivalent of this in ancient Bible manuscripts, and you see it all the time in nineteenth century print advertising and signage.) I’m not a fan of the practice, but I’ve taught myself not to let it bother me too much, since it’s just as unalterably a part of typography as the shape of the letter F. Plus, unlike the capitalized last letter on an lc word, it is possible to do the large last letter in all caps well. See the Washington Nationals for a prime example of how the bookends thing can be done elegantly.
(And that is the only element of the Nats unis I have ever called “elegant.”)

Paul hosts a different celebrity sporting event (softball, flag football, 3-on-3 halfcourt hoops, street hockey, indoor soccer, etc.) each week…kinda the Wide World of UniWatch. Celebrity men and women would wear the latest jerseys, or throwbacks, depending on the subject of the day’s show. Paul would do play-by-play, then breaking from the action to give a little more info on the featured unis of the day.
With the female celebrities involved, think of a real-life version of Rob Ullman’s artwork…with short pants, of course.
This could be a way to introduce new unis to the public before the teams wear them, or to showcase some great throwbacks.
Can’t find enough matching throwbacks? No problem – Paul’s highly skilled, highly paid staff of DIY experts could make some for the show…

ESPN talking heads are discussing NFL overtime system.
And, yeah, it’s dumb. Too much depends on coin toss.
But Woody Paige is right in saying ties aren’t the end of the world. What was goofy was the way the NFL treated them, simply throwing them out and going by won-lost percentage based on one less game for the two teams that tied. In theory, back then a team could go 1-0-11, and win the title.
This is probably too simple, but why not just say neither team can attempt a field goal until their second possession of the overtime?

Oh, yeah, I forgot about the veracity of throwbackery.
(Actually, by the time White Sox added the shoulder TVs the unis were considerably whiter than their predecessors. Not as white as the doubleknits that would come later, but whiter. I say that because I never thought the original Twins looked cream at all; in fact was struck by the fact that they had achieved “white”. Always wondered if perhaps that was because by the late 50’s teams decided they could afford dry cleaning instead of regular laundry).

Have to disagree about your take on the sudden death rule in the NFL. It’s strange how this question has come out of nowhere the last couple of years. As a Steelers fan, I remember well the 2003 overtime playoff loss to the Titans after losing the coin toss. The format just never bothered me then, or now.
I think the teams that truly deserve to win are able to stop the winner of the coin toss. Don’t like the idea of giving another possession or prohibiting field goals on the first possession by each team. Injuries would increase on both sides if the 5th quarter was artificially extended. Even without injuries, the physical toll a longer overtime period would be a big negative for both teams the following week.
With the NFL possibly moving to a 18 game season, that’s all the more reason not to artificially extend regular season games.

Re:NFL Overtime
How about basing who receives the ball first on some sort of measurable performance for the first four quarters? Say total yardage or time of possession or some geeky fantasy shit. Rather than leave it up to the randomness of a coin flip.
(Or maybe on least accumulated time under arrest for total roster).
#192 by Ricko on 09.11.09 7:01 pm |
Maybe it’s as simple as…if you have possession at the end of regulation you’re the one to kick off in the overtime? But you choose which goal to defend.
Haven’t really thought it through, but you’d have been the last team with a chance to score…so you give it back to the other guy.
Might generate a lot of second down punts in the last few seconds, though. LOL
Aw, shoot, I dunno. But it seems to me I saw some stats one time that suggest winning the toss has a marked affect on who wins and who loses. And that seems out of whack.

re: NFL overtime
im wont to agree with gusto…it aint really broke, so why fix it?
how did they decide the GGEP in 58?
seemed to work then…no way should they change it to either the NC2A format(s) or prohibit a team from kicking a field goal in the first series…what if the defenders STOP the lucky team who wins the coin flip? should THEY be prohibited from kicking a FG? that doesn’t seem very fair…you stopped team x…marched 65 yards back on them, but sorry, you have to go for it on 4th and 4 from the 35
leon may be on to something about the coin flip…
in all seriousness, except in the super bowl, one team is given a home field advantage; why not just establish at the outset that the home team will automatically have the choice to recieve or kick off to begin overtime? it’s as arbitrary as a coin flip, but the home team should be given some consideration (due to schedule in regular season and due to regular season performance in the playoffs)
so…my take: keep it as it is now, but if you change it, DO NOT adopt some college style format, and do not forbid field goals

Jeez, all I said was for one series each, make teams focus on a touchdown. After that, it’s business as usual.
You only get to the 35, either go for it on fourth down and risk giving up somewhat decent field position…or pooch kick. Not so terribly abnormal.

let me just clarify that: im saying that in every regular season game (unless a hurricane renders your stadium unplayable), each team gets 8 home games and 8 away games — that should count for something; in the playoffs, you earn the home field, and that also ought to count for something…super bowl’s “home” team (unlike the world series, where an exhibition game determines such) is decided based on AFC-NFC rotation … so in that instance, a coin-flip is only “fair” way to determine choice of possession in overtime
~~~~~
one other thought…why “restart” the game at all? why not just have overtime be a continuation of the fourth quarter — just do what you’d do at the end of first or third quarters — change ends and keep going? or maybe offer defense the opportunity to decide which goal to defend, but game resumes the same way as regular play ended
of course, i don’t see what’s so bad about having ties in the regular season to begin with
Colts had at LEAST three situations in OT when a 2009 team would have kicked the FG and walked off, but they didn’t. Even they understood it could look–and feel–way too easy that way.
I’m NOT saying change the present model. Just saying if the quick FG bugs people (and coaches and players, btw), just push it into the background for one series each. It would be the least gonzo way to modify things a little.
Only half joking, but if you don’t like the coin toss, how about a jump ball or a scrum to start OT?
I don’t have a problem with ties, either. Just do a point system like CFL or soccer – 3 points for a win and 1 for a tie. Then you could eliminate regular season OT, but keep it as is for the playoffs.
#209 by Matt English on 09.11.09 9:09 pm |
Jays @ Tigers:
As someone mentioned, Jays are wearing their black alt jerseys paired with their gray road pants. Now, the Jays generally wear their black jerseys with their white pants, and they do so for home night games, not away games. Something’s up. Maybe the black jerseys matched the hideous red 9/11 hats better? Also, something bugs me about a Canadian team having to wear American flag imagery on their hats, but that’s a whole other story.
Jays pitcher Brian Tallet, who’s been an on-again off-again darling for his flirtations with stirrups, has gone pajamas-pantsed for this one – guess his last outing with stirrups on didn’t go too well. I suppose a combination of red hats, black jerseys, gray pants, stirrups and giant muttonchops would be such a uni-overload that Paul would have a heart attack at the sight of a professional baseball player looking like that.
As many pitfalls as that might have of its own, it makes more sense in a lot of ways. Yes, the famous Dolphins-Chiefs and Chargers-Dolphins games ended with field goals but, man, they were great OT’s. Trouble is, they’re the exception rather than the rule.
Plus, one scoreless period and the tie stands is contradictory to the whole notion. If ties are important enough to break during the regular season, then BREAK them, no matter how long it takes.
If a nose tackle sits on a QB in the endzone for a safety, is that any better way to end a game than if a kicker wins it with a field goal? It’s called “FOOTball” for a reason. Let’s not diminish the role of the guys who put the foot in football.
I’m also watching some CFL, Hamilton and Toronto are both wearing neat throwback jerseys – and given the history of these teams (the clubs go back to the 1860s and 1870s respectively) these could be paying homage to anywhere within the past century, I’m not enough of a CFL uni purist to know. The unis themselves are nice, but they’re totally ruined by the advertising patches near the shoulders (pretty much standard for CFL uniforms, I hope that’s not a shock to American readers).
Then there’s the horrible look of the Rogers Centre field they’re playing on. When the Jays and Argos have back-to-back games (Jays played at the Centre née Skydome yesterday) they don’t have time to fully change over from the baseball setup, and it just looks awful with bases in the middle of the field combined with giant Tim Hortons and Wendy’s ads painted on the turf. But hey, it’s the CFL.
#214 by Ricko on 09.11.09 9:19 pm |
Truth is, of course, NFL wants games to end quickly. Can’t have an early game running too far into the late games, or a late game running too far into the Sunday night game.
The problem with treating the start of OT like a quarter change is that there’s absolutely no incentive for the offensive team to win it in regulation if the score is tied. At least when faced with the prospect of having to kick the ball away if they don’t, there’s a sense of urgency to score.
Of course, that might actually speed the game up because there would no longer be a reason to call timeouts inside the last 2 minutes, for ball carriers to run out of bounds, for QB’s to spike the ball…
My 2 cents on the NFL OT debate…..current rules, but with one exception: If team A wins the OT coin toss and goes down to score on the opening drive (either FG or TD), then team B gets one drive (beginning with receiving the kickoff) to go down and score. They must go for the win, and cannot force another tie score (if team A scored a TD, team B must score a TD and go for 2-point conversion). If Team B holds Team A on opening possession of OT and forces a punt or turnover, then regular OT rules apply (sudden-death), but a tie still would be possible except in playoff situations as it currently is.
I’m fine with the NFL’s overtime because one team tries to stop the other from winning. If they do stop them, they can go win it. If not, then they need to improve their defense.
I also like the college overtime rules too. Sure it could go on longer than it should, but it is competitive, and both teams have their chances. The format may not be perfect, but it is WAY better than having the old tie games. Those solved/determined nothing.
In uni world, some baseball teams should just not wear red hats. The gesture is nice, but doesn’t look good for most teams.
I’m not going to get into the Magic vs. Michael argument with you. If you think Magic was better, fine. (but are you basing part of that on the fact that Magic’s career FG% was 2 points higher?) If you think Julius Erving was better, OK. If you think Lebron James is better, that’s great.
But there’s a good reason the Bulls had to go out and get better players to win a title. (Wait. A title? Try 6 in an 8-year span.) They were doormats before he was drafted. The Lakers? Magic Johson was the final piece of the championship puzzle in his rookie season. It was already a solid team that happened to have a guy on it guy by the name of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and later would add James Worthy.
Who was sharing the court with Michael Jordan his first few years? Guys like Dave Corzine, Brad Sellers, Granville Waiters, Gene Banks and Sam Vincent. How often do you see a team with one superstar and a bunch of nobodies win championships?
As for the “making players around him better” argument, do you really think Jordan didn’t make Scottie Pippen* a better player? Or BJ Armstrong? Or John Paxson? Or Jud Buecheler, Steve Kerr, Craig Hodges, Bill Cartwright, Horace Grant, Luc Longley, et cetera, et cetera?
* Not to take anything away from Scottie. There’s no way the Bulls win 6 championships without him.
