Last Thursday I drove out to the Meadowlands to see Giants equipment director Joe Skiba, who wanted to show me a bunch of new gear and give me a tour of the team’s brand-new training facility. And lemme tell ya, he showed me some eye-opening stuff — almost none of which I’m allowed to share with you.
I know, nobody likes a tease, but Joe swore me to secrecy. Plus he bought me lunch. Plus-plus, no joke, he showed me this dumping ground near the training site and made lots of chatter about how “you could easily leave a body here and nobody would ever know.” Yikes — message received.
Here’s what I’ve been permitted to say:
• The red alternate jersey has been retired. The Giants will not be wearing any alternates or throwbacks in 2009 or 2010, but they have a doozy of a throwback slated for 2011 — which I can’t describe.
• Remember how some Giants players had a different jersey cut last season (no nameplate, lower placement of the NFL Equipment logo, etc.)? All Giants jerseys this season will feature that cut. One problem last year was that some players’ sleeve stripes looked sort of curvy instead of straight, but that has been addressed and should no longer be an issue.
• These new jerseys will be made of a new high-tech fabric. I usually roll my eyes at this kind of thing, but the new fabric really does look and feel different than the standard NFL material (or at least it does in person — I doubt you’ll be able to tell the difference on TV). Interestingly, the fabric is being made is Israel, which means the team’s game jerseys will carry “Made in Israel” tags — probably a first for an American pro sports team. And that’s all I can say about it for now.
• When the Giants wear blue jerseys on the road (in Dallas, say), Skiba plans to have them wear these pants (which are normally worn only with the white jersey), instead of these pants (which are normally worn with the blue jersey, whether at home or on the road). I like this idea.
• Skiba continues to tinker with the nose bumpers. Here’s what he has in mind for this season.
OK, I better stop there before Skeebs drives out and throttles me for giving too much away.
Fortunately, I have full clearance to show photos of the new training site, which is located maybe half a mile from Giants Stadium and looks pretty damn swank. Among the highlights:
• When the players enter the facility, this is the first thing they see. Too bad about the logo (a major turd in the punchbowl, no?), but that photo is a gem.
• There are also classic photos in the cafeteria and outside the film screening room (each of those photos represents one of the team’s championships; I didn’t have room to include the one for Super Bowl XLII).
• Speaking of the screening room, it’s basically a small theater. As you might expect, the seats are very wide. And hey, no cup holders!
• There’s a huge photo montage that was too big for me to capture. Skeebs was all excited to show me the last photo in the sequence, just to see if my head would explode.
• The “ny” logo is everywhere — on walls, on trash cans, even on this drainage plate.
• The new locker room is really nice. It’s shaped like a football, with a ring of honor along the top molding.
• The old practice bubble has been dismantled and replaced by a fancy new practice hangar. Interestingly, the goalposts are suspended from the ceiling by cables, so there’s no anchor post connected to the crossbar. Maybe that’s common for indoor practice fields, but I’d never seen it before and thought it was really neat.
That’s most of it. At one point we hopped in a high-tech vehicle and scooted back over to Giants Stadium, where Joe wanted to show me a few additional things. The best part: this impromptu photo gallery. Recognize anyone in those photos? According to Skeebs, this is Tom Coughlin and this is Jeff Feagles. And this? That’s a young Joe Skiba on the right, with his brother Ed (who works with Joe in the Giants’ equipment room) on the left. Look at those perfectly positioned pads and wristbands — no wonder they got into the equipment game.

#4 in the Giants pictures was Tuffy Leemans, who after football retired to my home town in Maryland and ran a duckpin bowling alley there. I remember going there with my mom as a child and taking my son there when he was a pre-schooler. It just closed down a few years ago. What a shame.

Tell me about the Triple-A shit… Man, nothing bothers me more than going to a Durham Bulls game and seeing them in some horrid alternate jersey in some god awful color. (I’ve seen green for the Environmentalists, light blue for Autism, Stars & Stripes for July 4th, yellow for Livestrong, etc). Granted, each one of the jersey designs gets auctioned off online afterwards and the entire proceeds go to charity, but man, the look is not good.

Great breakdown of the Brazilian national jerseys.
I was curious if anyone knew why on the current Brazilian national jersys, the five stars (each representing a World Cup championship) featured on their socks are two different colors. Four stars are one color, while the fifth is a different color. What is the significance of this fifth star being a different color?

As someone who had to hand cut those letters out, by the time you got to the 3rd layer of color it’s a pain in the ass to get in there just to get the little hole cut out. Plus the seamstress can work faster without have to do “insides” as we called them.
However now everything is machine cut, so they must just be holding true to the old style from back in the day?

I honestly think the Flames abandoned the QCs before the franchise played its first game. They really never did much to much to make that work at all. I think they used the QCs, as well as Omaha before, as a stepping stone for greener pastures. Of course local management didn’t help the cause either. They never advertised the team or had any big time promotions to bring in the crowds.
I was walking around one of the QC malls in a Flames jersey prior to a game last year (the teams 2nd season in the QCs) and got stopped by somebody asking me what team jersey that was. I told them and asked them where they were from, expecting an out of towner, the person was from MOLINE. They’re next question was, “The Mallards are gone, when did that happen?”
People there won’t know what they had until it’s gone. Tickets for Mallards games this year is actually higher than what tickets were to Flames games last season.

Anyways, I am not saying they copied the Pack, just that there are a lot of facilities that look similar. A lot of people around the league (since the 2003 renovation) have said the packers have some of the best facilites people have ever seen. So if you are going to copy something, copy from the best. And again, I am not accusing the Giant of copying from the Pack, just saying it is similar.

Logically though, Packers, Vikings, Bills etc. should have been some of the first with an indoor building. So more than likely some of the architects for the rest of the teams went up to see what worked/didn’t work for the Pack when they built their buildings.

He says that it’s because he grew up (in London) wearing long sleeves and has always found it more comfortable. The competitive season in Europe is fall-to-spring, though, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the heat and humidity at the Meadowlands last night was just too much for him.
I also wouldn’t be surprised if Landon bribed the kitman to “forget” Beckham’s preferred shirt.

Not exactly uni-related – more branding-related … what is the opinion of the term “New York Football Giants”? Isn’t that just a bit redundant? I can understand when the city had two teams in different sports with the same name, but that was … 50 years ago. Do we really need to hear “New York Football Giants?”
I don’t see or hear “The St. Louis Baseball Cardinals” – so why do the Giants feel the need to emphasize their sport?

As for the Giants, I’m hoping for the Homer Jones era white throwback, too. Would bring back memories of seeing the Giants at Yankee Stadium as a kid. They wore the all-white uni for all home games in ‘67, and it looked damn sharp with the stripes on the white socks matching the stripes on the jersey.

A lonnnnnnng time ago, the White Sox were pondering a move to St. Petersburg. So I designed some unis adding yellow for brightness, that could be used for White Sox, I pondered, if they changed their name to “Sun Sox”.
Messed around with a logo, too. Turned out…interesting. Sometimes I think it’s a lefthanded hitter driving one toward the palm trees in the distance…or a righty pulling one toward the viewer.

Good decision the White Sox made not moving to Tampa Bay. While they’ll always be the 2nd baseball team in the 2nd city, Tampa Bay has proven to be a horrible baseball market, with one asterix.
The asterix being how much does what appear to be the most gloomy non-astmospheric stadium in baseball – come into their poor support. Atmosphere counts !! – as the restaurant industry knows – and such events as the Winter Classic prove out.
I realize someone going to say, well their attendance has improved. I would argue, the fact that they made the World Series last year and truly have an exciting team, and yet still draw some very low crowds – must really be alarming to the owners – who appear to be some of the better owners a team can have

The indoor football leagues that aren’t part of the patented Arena League use suspended goal posts, just like the ones at the Giants’ facility. I went to a game outside of Akron OH a couple of years ago, and the walls were nothing more than plastic highway dividers covered with padding. If the players ran into them they would separate and they’d have to help fix them. Didn’t look too safe to me.
I prefer outdoor football, but I do like those mini-domes like the Kibbie Dome. I think Northern Arizona and Northern Iowa have those, too.

Thanks for the insight into those Vipers pants everyone. I probably went to 10 Vipers games a year growing up and it would have driven me nuts to miss a uni detail like numbers on the jersey. The CCM logo makes so much more sense.

Well, I finally got it. Phil, I think your gonna love this. This video is played on FS Wisconsin every once in a while showing the Batting Stance Guy. This particular version has the commentary in the background of Prince hitting a walk off home run from last year. It’s pretty awesome! A few notable things.. looks like BSG is wearing some sort of 1970 or ‘71 Brewers throwback, and of course, he un-tucks his jersey like Prince, and it comes down to his feet. Pretty funny if you ask me.

And, as far as The Trop, if you have not been there in the last three years, your opinion is out of date. Granted it is not The Jake, The Cell or even GABP, but it is not a dump that because it is old, it’s a classic like Wrigley, but it is not bad anymore.
You really should read “Stadium For Rent” and it will tell you the whole story of how MLB has screwed the Tampa Bay market for years, and as a result, you have the plagued Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays.
“Stadium For Rent” can be found and read online, as Google is your friend.

And I also agree with your opinion about the Sox. You can’t really compare how the Rays have fared with what the plan would have been had the Sox moved here. Namoli is a dirty word around these parts for what he and his group did with the Devil Rays in their forming years. Since Stuart Sternberg took over, well, the results speak for themselves. It went from a perennial bottom feeder to a constant threat.
I can’t help but think, even after last year, that it would be a completely different ballgame if we were placed in the National League instead of the American League and the Brewers stayed in the AL. Of course, that’s all because of selfishness on my part. Beating up on the Mets, Braves, Nationals and Marlins would be much easier than facing the Yankees and Red Sox.

In early March, Football Fanatics pitched a St. Patrick’s special edition Giants cap, white with ‘ny’ in green, and I tried to buy four [4]. But Fanatics replied they were all out.
I can’t believe every last one was sold before St. Pat’s Day; has to be some left-overs somewhere. Anybody know where I can find them? Thanks.
