I hate the DH — hate it — but even I think it should always be used in the All-Star Game, regardless of where the game is played. Who wants to see a pitcher hit in an All-Star Game?
But Bud Selig and Co. don’t see it that way. Good thing, too, because pitchers’ at-bats are the best bets for all-star uni anomalies. Sure enough, when Roy Halladay came up to bat last night, he wore a blank navy blue helmet instead of Toronto’s usual black lid. The rear view revealed that it was Evan Longoria’s helmet with the Rays logo decal removed (note the MLB logo rendered in Rays colors). And look the announcers actually picked up on it. I’m tellin’ ya, everyone’s a uni watcher these days. Now we just have to teach Buck and McCarver the difference between a sticker and a decal.
Meanwhile, now that base coaches have to wear helmets, that provides a new avenue for helmet oddities — especially since managers often serve as coaches in the All-Star Game. Joe Torre, for example, didn’t bring a Dodgers helmet to St. Looey, but it was kinda cool to see him in a Cards helmet again.
In more mundane developments:
• Ichiro was wearing some nifty silver cleats. Here’s a closer view.
• Lots of players in white shoes, including David Wright, Albert Pujols, and Dan Haren.
• The scoreboard showed Jason Bay of the Red Sox in a Pirates cap. It also misspelled George Hendrick’s name (particularly unforgivable when you consider Hendrick used to play for the Cardinals).
• The Prez wore a Chisox jacket and Levi’s for throwing out the first pitch. (Unfortunately, Fox showed him throwing the ball but didn’t show where it went, presumably because they didn’t want to let anyone see in case the President tossed a two-hopper, or hit Keith Olbermann’s mom in the face, or whatever. Total chickenshit move on the part of Fox and/or the White House staff. As it turned out, his pitch made it on the fly, just barely, as you can see toward the end of this video clip. )
• It’s great that Willie Mays wore a Giants cap with his suit, but couldn’t they have gotten him a 5950 instead of a BP model?
• A bunch of Cardinals greats, all of them wearing red blazers, were introduced before the game. It wasn’t until I checked the photo wire that I realized the blazers weren’t identical. That’s Lou Brock with the bird on the bat.
One footnote to the game: Tim Wakefield brought along a special catcher’s mitt but didn’t get into the game. Too bad.

I was watching a replay of the 94 All Star Game in Pittsburgh on MLBTV. It was insane the number of AL players wearing dark-colored road jerseys. All the Cleveland guys (Lofton, Belle), White Sox guys (Jason Bere, Frank Thomas) and A’s (Reuben Sierra) wore navy, black and green tops. I’ve never seen them so prevalent in an All-Star game. Also, the players wore speciall All-Star game patches, so the 125th anniversary MLB patch was gone from the sleeves. Instead, the logo on the back of the caps was gold instead of rendered in the team colors (or red/white/blue, b/c at the time I think they all used the standard MLB logo colors).

I agree with Paul’s observation about everyone becoming a Uni Watcher…I only watched 10 minutes of the game, but it included a discussion of pajama pants vs. high cuffs between Buck & McCarver. Carl Crawford was on base and, of course, fixing to steal, and McCarver says “he’s the fastest guy from first to second that I’ve seen since Lou Brock…imagine how much faster he’d be if his pant cuffs weren’t dragging on the ground. Brock always wore his really high up.”

Don’t know if it was mentioned, but I am pretty sure Prince Fielder used one of Ryan Braun’s new line of bats in last nights Home Run Derby. I don’t know if he has been using them in the regular season however.

Fielder owes some credit to teammate Rickie Weeks, whose bat the first baseman used both in Monday’s Derby, which he won, and again in Tuesday’s game. Fielder has hit with Weeks’ bat for much of the season.
“I don’t have a specific bat,” Fielder said. “Whatever feels comfortable at the time, I’ll use. I switch every now and then. I just like to see something else, I guess. I just won’t use the pitcher’s bat. I won’t go there.”
In Fielder’s previous All-Star appearance, he used the bat of then-teammate Joe Dillon and went 0-for-1.”

One thing fairly evident last night.
Given a choice, a lot of MLBers would prefer white or mostly white cleats at home and gray or mostly gray cleats on the road.
This, of course, is a look that only works with pajama pants.
With short pants, no. Unless you want to look like a geek or a nun teaching gym (see Ichiro for reference). Stooooopid looking.

HHH has an error on his city flag unis. He’s not using the City of Charlotte flag on his design, he’s using a flag that just contains one of the many logos for Charlotte. If I’m not mistaken, its the logo for the old Charlotte Coliseum, but it could just also be an old logo for the city itself.

Seriously, to see a player get down right giddy when the President of the US signs a baseball for him, especially a foreign player, is fantastic. Did you notice that last night as the starters were introduced, the TV graphics included a “deck of cards” looking item on the left side of the screen with their team logo?
I can’t claim to have seen them all, but of the ones I did see most of them had the logo that’s on their most familiar hats. The one exception I noticed was that the Twins either used their TC initials or their TC graphic.

the cardinals blazers were a bad mix of colors too. the first thing i noticed when they walked out was that the reds weren’t the same.

Am I missing something? I don’t know about live or not, but FOX did show the prez’s first pitch in its entirety, I saw a replay of it. It barely made it to Pujols who reached forward to catch it right before it hot the ground.

I was at the Blueclaws game last night to check out Tampa prospect Matt Moore, saw a flyer for Bruceclaws with a jersey similar to last years lettering and guitar logo but the sleeves are blue this year.

My beef with Buck is that even when he isn’t plugging something, the man simply will not ever just shut up once in awhile. He simply will not tolerate a moment of dead air without having to pave it over with the sound of his voice if no one else will.
In general, that’s what I hate the most about American sportscasters, that they rarely will just let the game play itself out without their yammering over the top of it.
I am not calling for announcer-less telecasts, but cutting down the chatter by like 25% wouldn’t hurt, in my opinion.

Speaking of city flag designs…
One of my better uni-nerd moments was making a soccer club logo based on the San Antonio flag for an earlier version of Pro Evolution Soccer on the PS2. It was the flag in shield form, with a soccer ball forming the crown on the Alamo facade.
The current version of the game has a great logo & kit editor that I spend many more hours fiddling around with than I do actually playing the game.

I have no problems with what Obama wore to the ASG.
If I was POTUS and throwing out the 1st pitch, I’d wear a Reds or Rays jacket.
I think that Obama is leading this country in the wrong direction and did not vote for him, but personally, I like the guy. He would be OK to hang out with.
Can you imagine if Hillary would have been POTUS? Would she have worn a Yankees or a Cubs jacket?
I can only imagine what a reaction the Cubs jacket would have gotten in St. Louis.

Getting back on track, regarding white shoes and the ASG, the styles have evolved from simple white cleats to more of a white cleat with team colors. For instance, one of the Phillies had white cleats with strong red accents.
If you pick up a Eastbay, you’ll see nike and UA both have a large line of white cleats. Are amateur teams really wearing a lot of white cleats because it seems silly that companies are marketing white shoes for the A’s and a few players once a year in the ASG.

We take potshots at a lot of people here, but they’re based on their behavior or on decisions they have made. Race doesn’t fall into that category. If someone zinged Michael Jackson, for example, because it sometimes looked like his face was melting or for his other transgressions, that’s really not wrong. Those are results of how he lived his life, how it played out, and are fair game. He was an incredibly talented, incredibly flawed human being. That’s entirely true, and has absolutely nothing to do with his race.
Now, as to the President, how do we know he WASN’T wearing stirrups….hmmmm?

The city flag jerseys were inspired by a Pittsburgh Steelers 1994 throwback jersey, with a distinctive 1920’s/1930’s style stripe pattern on the front. They are American Football jerseys, not soccer jerseys. However, several people have said they look more like soccer jerseys, so I’m not surprised about your goalie comment, lol! Thank you for the “brilliant” compliment, I appreciate it! :)

Those Sports Specialties and Diamond Collection ads remind me of getting my first fitted New Era hat. When I was in junior high, 1988-89, one of the kids in my school got a fitted Mets hat. Most of the guys thought was so cool cause at the time all that could be found in my area was the hats with the adjustable strap. I talked my dad into taking me to the baseball card shop that sold the fitted hats. I remember that they had less than 10 different teams and maybe 3-5 sizes of each team they carried. Being from Michigan, I wanted a Tigers hat, but the only hat they had in my size was the Brewers. It was the blue hat with the ball in glove logo. I didn’t care though. I loved having an “authentic” cap and wore that thing everywhere. Even though I had out grown that hat by the time I was in high school, I wish I would have kept it.
