I know, that screen shot looks like it’s from a video game, but it’s actually Carlos Peña from last night’s home run derby, where his Rays logo sleeve patch was upside-down (it’s supposed to look like this). Peña’s BP pitcher had an inverted patch as well, as you can see here.
Me, I didn’t see any of it cuz I was off at Keyspan Park watching Wilco and Yo La Tengo (whose frontman, Ira Kaplan, wore a Mr. Met T-shirt and lobbed a bunch of baseballs into the crowd because, as he put it, “That’s why you come to a baseball stadium, to get a foul ball, right?”).
Thanks to Tim Graham, Kevin “Lunchbox” Monahan, Greg Riffenburgh, and Tim Burke for their eagles eyes and screen shots. Thanks also to Phil, who notes that the A.L. and N.L. caps bore at least superficial resemblances to certain past and present team logos.

The SF Giants stated the other night that Jonathan Sanchez was the first Giant left to pitch a no-hitter since 1929.
After looking at the ‘84 picture, I guess he is now the only Giant lefty to pitch a no-no.
PS Maybe Atlee Hammaker should have tried using the other arm in that game!!!

Can anybody help me find a specific photo? I am looking for the original photograph that the box cover/cartridge label of Tecmo Super Bowl III was based on. It shows QB Todd Marinovich of the LA Raiders getting creamed by a bunch of Buffalo Bills. His head is turned at an awkward angle as if his facemask is being pulled, but the hand near it is not touching the facemask.
I remember back in the 90’s when this game came out, I saw the original photograph that this cover/label was based off of, and in that photo a hand was indeed pulling the facemask. I always assumed they modified it so Tecmo wouldn’t get sued when a youth player pulled an opponent’s facemask in a game because he saw it on Tecmo, and then broke the opponent’s neck.
Anyway, I am looking for this original photo. I’ve scoured the internet, using all sorts of different search terms in Google image search, but no luck. If my memory, albeit vague, serves me correctly, I believe I saw the original photo in a 1992 edition of Sports Illustrated. I’m pretty sure the date of the game when the photo was taken was October 11, 1992. If any of you guys could help me find it, I’d really, really appreciate it!
Here’s what the box cover/cartridge label of Tecmo Super Bowl III looks like:

Michael Owen will be wearing #7. The training shirt numbers have no meaning. None of the players on the team wear their real shirt number for training. As for why that is, I have no idea.

Hey guys, HHH here…
I’m almost done with making city flag jerseys for every NFL team. Due to the positive response from UniWatch readers, the fact Paul likes them, and the fact that I’m addicted to making them, I came up with an idea:
By request, I will design custom flag/crest/shield jerseys for your high school, college, frat, town, city, family crest, and/or last name heraldry/coat of arms. It doesn’t have to be a football jersey; it can be a jersey for any sport.
I am still working out the details of this idea. So before I spend more time trying to figure everything out, I just wanted to get an idea of whether there was any interest. So, anybody interested?

The US Military All-stars “names” were all pretty self-explanatory, save one. What does “McGinnis” and “26″ have to do with American military history?
A quick wikipedia search turned up a recent Medal of Honor winner, Ross McGinnis , who threw himself on a grenade in Adhamiyah, Iraq in 2006 to save his fellow soldiers. The number 26 is his unit, the 26th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Battalion of the 1st Inf. Division.
As our Paul has said, this is uniform innovation at its best, educating us in some small way.

I hate to point this out to those who noted logo similarities, but just because different logos use a sweeping, hand-lettered-looking script letter doesn’t mean there’s any kind of ripoff or “studying for inspiration” involved. Might as well include the Braves A, too, btw….and say Century is a ripoff from Times Roman. Or that the Athletics and Rangers’ chest script logos look suspiciously alike. Yeah, so, what would you expect from a pair of script logos with a underlining tail?

The NBA logo concepts are interesting. I always thought the NBA logo was a little dull – doesn’t really capture the athleticism of the game. NBA_Logo_3 captures the athleticism better but is maybe too guard/wing-specific. I think I like the one in the lower left of NBA_Logo_4 best. Could be a guard/wing going in for a layup, but it could also almost be a big man corraling a rebound. Either way, it’s much more dynamic than the current logo.

After watching the Derby last night and seeing Fielder in that BP jersey about 5 sizes too big I wanted to barf. The people I was watching it with thought they were all that big but I said there’s no way they were all that big. I’d be willing to be that Fielder requested a horrifically large BP jersey and then looked like a clown a the end when he untucked it. Fielder and his overly huge jerseys and pajama pants may be all that is wrong with MLB uniforms these days.

I’m still trying to figure out what I think about having special “AL” and “NL” caps for the home run derby. On one hand, they avoid horrible mismatched color combos. Plus this year’s hats were a vast improvement over last year’s (even if the AL cap looks just like an Angels cap, as pointed out in the ticker). However, part of me just can’t get beyond the fact that it’s the MLB looking for yet ANOTHER piece of uninspired merchandise to sell.

My problem with adding N and A hats to the Home Run Derby is that, while it may be sound merchandising that adds another sellable product to the All-Star line, it’s a lousy marketing move.
A casual fan, watching last night, might have been quite impressed with Nelson Cruz but had no instant visual cue to tell what team he played for. Had to listen or read the on-screen graphics. Might have cost the Rangers, and MLB, a fan with renewed interest.
To me, anyway, one of the appealing elements of the All-Star Game was seeing all the different unis on the field at the same time. Last night’s Home Run Derby seemed, I dunno, “homogenized”. Visually it lacked the color and variety that we’ll see in the game tonight.

I love the city flag jerseys, though as someone commented on a previous day’s post, IIRC, they look more like soccer jerseys than football jerseys (which is fine with me, since I’m one of those weird soccer fans). Keep it up, HHH! And if you’re looking for further requests, my home town San Francisco’s flag ( http://en.wikipedia.... ) doesn’t do much for me, but I think the California state flag ( http://en.wikipedia.... ) would make an awesome jersey.
A number of European soccer clubs incorporate elements from their city flags in their uniforms. Three that come to mind immediately are my beloved AFC Ajax, which has used the three Xs from the Amsterdam flag ( http://en.wikipedia.... ) as a design element; ACF Fiorentina, which uses the red giglio (fleur-de-lys) from the Florence city flag ( http://en.wikipedia.... ); and Barcelona, which uses the vertical red and yellow stripes from the Barcelona flag ( http://en.wikipedia.... ) on the back collar. I’m sure there are plenty more.

OK, so I just read the Page 2 80’s article…I’m so sick of Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary getting all this praise. What everyone fails to mention is that not only did Miami lose that game, the previous week they lost to Maryland in what was at the time the greatest comeback in college football history! Way more impressive than a hail mary. That’s just 1 pass left up to luck really, in a consistently close game. Coming back from 31 points at halftime with the back-up QB takes a whole team effort! They make movies about this stuff! I can’t believe this game never gets any play!
“1984, saw the Terps beat 17th-ranked West Virginia (20–17), 20th-ranked Clemson (41–23), and sixth-ranked Miami in what was at the time the greatest comeback victory in college football history. Maryland, trailing the Hurricanes 31–0 at halftime, would go on to rally under quarterback Frank Reich after he replaced Stan Gelbaugh. Reich threw four touchdown passes, and capitalizing on Miami errors, the Terrapins went on to win 42–40. The recovery of a 31–point halftime deficit would stand as the greatest comeback victory in college football history for the next 22 years, until the record was finally broken by Michigan State against Northwestern. Frank Reich went on to again repeat the feat in his professional career with the Buffalo Bills overcoming a 32-point deficit, setting the NFL comeback record.”

I have always thought the Leafs were more of a royal blue thruout the ages.
nhluniforms.com shows the Leafs as being navy for much of the history. They look a little too dark to me. I’m thinking its royal blue. O-Pee-Chee hockey cards (the ones where they had the extra series of cards above what Topps did) seemed to show a lighter shade of blue.
Just my take!

I asked Ira about that after the show (I’ve known him since 1987ish). He said there was “heated discussion” discussion about this before their set. He was planning to throw the balls way up high. But then they thought, “Hmmm, Wilco is from Chicago, so maybe there are Chicago fans here. And we’re the opening band, which is sort of like being the visiting team. And what do Chicago fans do when they get a ball hit by the visiting team? They THROW IT BACK.”
So he just lobbed the balls because they were afraid that the balls might get whipped back at them onstage.

Key point, I guess, it that for someone like me, who doesn’t follow baseball as closely as I once did, the team hats at HR Derby helped. I don’t mind the National and American jerseys so much; they are sort of part of the fun (designed in the colors of the host team and all)…but so was the odd mix you’d get with the team caps. And, as I said, made it easier for me to be reminded, “Oh, yeah, that’s that young outfielder from…wherever. The Manta is upside down for two reasons:
1) The lighter side of the Manta is always on the bottom. Always. No exceptions. Always. Rays will rarely swim upside down unless chasing food, and even then they rarely do that. They are bottom-feeders (not figuratively), and they scour the seabeds and ocean floor for food.
2) Since the first reason is always true about the lighter colour, the eye is on the wrong side of the body. If you’re viewing it from the right side of its body, the right eye should be visible, not the left.
Therefore, it is upside down. My zoo knowledge comes in handy once again on this site. LOL

OK, I’m not saying it ISN’T upside-down. Clearly it is. What I’m saying is that it isn’t obvious that it’s upside-down. And I’m not buying the eye analysis, either. I say the ray could be making a right turn and that’s why the left wing is higher and curled a bit. Plus, the “camera” is positioned above and to the right, so the right eye has moved out of view and the left is becoming visible.
Face it. I’m right and you have no imagination.

Random Ramblings on the topics:
1) Prince Fielder is approaching (or passed) scary-big status. The man needs to pass on the after-game buffet once in awhile.
2) How about resurrecting the old Home Run Derby at the end of each season? Like the classic show from the ealry 60s, have the top 10 HR hitters at the end of the season compete in a round-robbin format. They can wear their team unis and not look so cookie-cutterish.
3) Chris Cooley, for all his wackiness, does make some valid points in his 10 Things.

And the Tallon firing is due to his immense stupidity. He signs Hossa for a ridiculous length of time at an idiotic amount when he could have had Martin Havlat back at a much lower price. Then he effs up the RFA offers by MAILING them out when the CBA explicitly states that they are to be couriered or faxed ONLY. In doing so, he is forced to sign both Barker and Versteeg at market value when they could have been kept with low price tags for this coming season. Next season, the ‘Hawks are in deep, deep doo-doo in terms of the salary cap.
Stupidity + ineptitude = unemployment. It was that simple.

“2) How about resurrecting the old Home Run Derby at the end of each season? Like the classic show from the ealry 60s…”
Was late ’50s (Harmon Killebrew and Jim Lemon were in Senators unis, Bob Cerv in KC A’s)…and I loved it. Talk about something I wish had been filmed in color! Many of us likely have never seen some of those uniforms in motion and in color (A’s and Senators, to be sure).
Probably couldn’t do the show these days. Back then, the prize money, though small, was enough to make it worthwhile for the players.
Anyone else remember when winners’ and losers’ share in things like WS or Super Bowl were a big deal? Now they get mentioned maybe once and are, by comparison to today’s salaries, chump change.
So, in 2009 the payoff for a HR Derby like that would have to be enormous for any players to even consider it, I imagine.

Yes, especially his third thing: “I think the NFL uniform rule is much too stringent. Guys are now being fined in the third and fourth quarters for their jerseys being untucked. Assessing a $5,000 fine for a untucked jersey is ignorant. When the thing gets yanked out of the pants it just looks like the guy is playing harder. The NFL is also fining for other minuscule things, like socks not being pulled up enough and hand towels being two inches too long. Obviously, the NFL has to keep things within reason, but insignificant uniform infractions do not affect the integrity of the game.”
I know this might be a bugaboo to some of us uni-obsessives, but I’d like to think we all can agree the No Fun League is just way too corporate and over-the-top on this particular issue. As long as we don’t see Prince Fielder-like jerseys, or the return of the tear-away jersey, I think the NFL should unclench a little.

I disagree whole-heartedly.
Hossa may be more durable, but there’s no guarantee on injuries. Havlat’s past may have had something to do with it, but Havlat outscored Hossa last season in both the regular season and playoffs despite playing in less games. Havlat’s two years younger, and comes in at $200,000 less per year. In fact, I would guess that Havlat would have given Chicago a discount due to his love of playing there last season had they simply called him. But they didn’t.
The CBA states that any player under 35 at the time of signing the contract will not have the salary count against the cap if they choose to retire. The problem for the Hawks isn’t retirement. It’s next season and the season after.
Toews, Kane, Seabrook, Keith… you have a lot of young stars to sign, and these players will get huge money on the open market. Unless Hossa retires at age 30 (which is insane after signing for 12 years), Tallon will have caused the Hawks lose some big names. He already signed Barker and Versteeg to major increases after his gaffe with the RFA mishap, so you’re eating up major cap space with his errors.
After all, you have no goaltender this season besides Huet. Why? Because they couldn’t afford to sign Khabibulin. Good luck with the Flying Frenchman guarding the twine.

Teebz, one thing being talked about today is that CBA/qualifying offer mess is merely the final straw for Tallon. But specifically in regard to the Hossa 12 year thing, people are saying that not just Tallon but the Bowmans had a voice in that offer.
JMHO, but SOMETHING happened, be it the offers or something like that. Nobody in hockey gets canned (or more accurately, kicked upstairs) on July 15th.
I’m sure the press will have more tomorrow. Just caught a very short interview with one of the beat writers at lunch.

The Hossa deal, while good, could have been Havlat for less. I’ll agree that the Bowmans probably had a hand in the signing, especially considering how good of a scout Scotty is, but the RFA problem handcuffs the Hawks.
In fact, there was no reason to sign Hossa or Havlat at all in my view. He’s not the game-breaker that everyone thinks he is. Personally, the Hawks should have continued down the path of developing from within that got them to where they were last season. Especially when the biggest reason they got to where they were signed in the off-season with Edmonton because Tallon blew his wad on Hossa instead of goaltending.

Goaltending, from this fan’s perspective: I never thought they’d go all year (2008-09) with that much money tied up in goaltenders. I thought we’d trade one before Thanksgiving for sure; just to get something out of it because everyone knew Habbuhlin (sp) was gone at the end of the season. And with that said, with Huet signed for big money there’s no way we’re spending anything on a goalie right now. IMHO we may wait until training camps start before making a move there.

Phil and Paul, this may interest you, but for the hockey and baseball people, it may be quite interesting as well.
There was/is an on-going discussion about teams that put “World Champs” on their jerseys in baseball. I now have found that this existed in hockey long before it seems to have existed in baseball.
While looking for photos for my current article, I discovered this photo of Babe Dye of the Toronto St. Pats that has to be from the 1933-34 season. Why? Because the patch on his chest says “World Champions 1932-33″.

Buck just said Mauer has “one of the prettiest left-handed swings you’ll see.” Actually, you NEVER hear about righties having “pretty” or “sweet” swings. It’s ALWAYS lefties whose swings are described this way, I assume because the momentum of their swing is moving toward first base, so the swing/run transition is more fluid…

I answered my own question. This was taken from Brewers.com, but still doesn’t answer why Fielder had the number 8 on his bat on Monday’s Home Run Derby:
“Fielder’s contribution proved to be the highlight for the Brewers’ three representatives in Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Busch Stadium.
Fielder owes some credit to teammate Rickie Weeks, whose bat the first baseman used both in Monday’s Derby, which he won, and again in Tuesday’s game. Fielder has hit with Weeks’ bat for much of the season.
“I don’t have a specific bat,” Fielder said. “Whatever feels comfortable at the time, I’ll use. I switch every now and then. I just like to see something else, I guess. I just won’t use the pitcher’s bat. I won’t go there.”
In Fielder’s previous All-Star appearance, he used the bat of then-teammate Joe Dillon and went 0-for-1.”
