Dykstra filing for bankruptcy isn’t that shocking. What is shocking is that for a guy who is reportedly 46 years old, his speech, posture and gestures is that of someone 76 years old or older. Watched that Real Sports piece on him and it was disturbing with his mumbling, incoherent responses, being hunched over and the trembling. Not good.

Regarding the Ticker comment about Dwayne Murphy’s NOB space. I looked at my picture of Bill Murphy and there seems to be some space between his R and P. I dunno. Does this look closer than this?

The helmet might be a little too Jaguars-esque for my taste, but I like the return to block numbers. Maybe the torso stripes could move to the sleeves and replace the Bengal logo. That would reduce some redundancy in relation to the helmet.
Andrew keeps the iconic helmet, but cleans up a lot of the color-clash problems on the current unis (white side panels, contrasting sleeve color, etc.)

Peter Pocklington attempted to trade Grant Fuhr to the Red Wings before the 1989 season because he was bleeding money. In Jimmy Devellano’s book, he states that Sather and Devellano had a conversation over Fuhr because Pocklington had approached Mike Illitch in an effort to sell Fuhr to the Red Wings.
Sather freaked when he heard this as he had built the best team in the NHL, and Pock and Slats had a long meeting in which Pock told Slats that somebody was going to have to go.
When Wayne announced to the world that he was marrying actress Janet Jones, Pocklington called Kings’ owner Bruce McNall and offered up Gretzky for a considerable cash amount. McNall referred it to his hockey people, and Pocklington and Sather orchestrated the trade with LA. The final deal that was worked out had the Oilers trading Gretzky, along with Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski to the Los Angeles Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, $15 million in cash, and the Kings’ first-round draft picks in 1989, 1991, and 1993.
One of the major conditions for the trade to go through on Edmonton’s end was that Gretzky had to call Pocklington and formally request a trade to LA, something that had been worked out long before Gretzky even knew he was being dealt. McNall called Gretzky and asked him to make the call so that the deal could be finalized officially.
The fact that he married an actress was just the reason that Pocklington needed to claim that Gretzky wanted to move to help Janet. The reality was that his real estate empire was failing horribly, and the Oilers were the lynchpin in keeping himself profitable. In making the deal, Pocklington got $15 million and saved considerable money – something he used to salvage keeping Fuhr, Messier, and the rest of the Oilers together for two more seasons.
Call it what you want, but Gretzky never asked for the trade because he wanted to move for Janet’s sake. He asked for the trade because that’s what he was told to do.

LI Phil, regarding MSG vs. Oakland/Alameda County: I don’t know all the facts/figures, but I can tell you that the list is in the current edition of ESPN Magazine.
And BTW, while it’s not in the mag I know that for a long long time Wrigley was the stadium that had hosted the most NFL games: that might no longer be true, but between Giants Stadium and Wrigley there’s two places that almost certainly will remain 1-2 forever.
Ricko, regarding the pic of Earl Weaver at the Met: I have to admit that I didn’t recognize the vertical light standards. I remembered those heavily cantilevered supports over the third-base side.
Also, many of my memories of the Met were Bears games when the sky was anything but bright blue. ;-)

Can’t find an article, but on the broadcast of the US-Honduras Gold Cup soccer game yesterday, they mentioned that Honduras asked to wear a peace symbol on their jersey which was related to the political events in that country.
They were turned down by CONCACAF (North America’s governing body for soccer).

One more thing, but on a new topic.
The Nationals and Astros are finishing up a rain suspended game from May today, this time in Houston. Washington will still be the home team for this conclusion, then become the road team for the regular night game.
We’ll have to see if either team wears different uniforms for the two games.

When Beathard/Gibbs took over they tried to “AFC” (the dominant conference at the time) the uni’s which made the “gold” look more like yellow. There were other things they changed but I’ve already gone off on this subject more than i had intended. I kinda like the feather up the back of the helmet design from late 50’s/early 60’s as well.

If it’s a minicam, it’s definitely before it’s time. AFAIK that era didn’t have minicams that size. But the cameraman does have some sort of headphone on: he’s taking directions from someone, so that seems to rule out a local film cameraman.

Good catch on the Orlando Cabrera stirrups. I noticed that last night as well. Too bad it coincided with Adam Kennedy going back to the bell bottoms. Did anyone happen to get a picture of Kennedy before he went back? For a couple games he had what I thought was the Athletics’ wordmark on the top but maybe it was a laundry tag like that D’Backs player had. I was going to get a screenshot but they never showed a closeup.
Same with Rajai Davis who appeared to have the A’s logo near the bottom of his stirrups. He rarely ever gets in the game but the last time he did, they were logo free stirrups. Maybe it’s just for the home unis.

This coming from a man who started his passion for football helmets solely off of the Redskins feather mohawk helmet. As a kid my dad took me to see Massillon end Niles long win streak. I think Earle Bruce former OSU coach was coaching at Massillon at that time.
And interesting posts about the Bengals unif and some history. I always heard that Paul Brown sort of took Massillon’s colors of the Bengals black and orange.
And As for Akron burgers is Swensons the place that adds brown sugar to the meat or was that Menches? I think Swensons did and they were good

Both with the stripes on the compression shirt rather than the jersey. Interesting concept, allows for elbow-length or wrist-length sleeves, striped according to the team design. Besides, the NFL probably would sell a shitload of the offcially striped compression shirts.

ANY of the BENGALS redesigns would be an immense improvement – I favor the Charcoal/Burnt Orange design with the new helmet logo. How about the 1968 uni with a new helmet logo, and the Alternate being the unsed ORANGE jersey with black numerals used in the original NFL.AFL promo materials?
AIRFORCE – a step BACKWEARD by ading the black. Last years Silver/Gray pants and numerals, paired with the White helmet, gave them a unique, distictive, classy – even a bit military – look that would and should serve them well. Ading the Black makes them just another trendy 8th Grade team – TEN YEARS TOO LATE !!!

I am in Louisiana and I am a bit of an LSU fan. LSU has distictive, one-of-a-kind NCAA unis, particularly the jerseys. There is absolutely NO NEED to place an “LSU” wordmark on the chest – NONE.
Except to sell more cheaply made $79.99 Nike replica jerseys, as they can not bother to produce LSU authentics

Great ESPN article, Paul….After watching many of the “America’s Game” episodes about teams from the 80’s on the NFL Network, I have a much deeper appreciation for unis during that time period. Made me realize how crappy modern uniforms are (See Bengals, Buccanners, 49ers, Vikings, Dolphins, on and on). Did anyone see the Chargers wearing yellow pants? BEAUTIFUL!
