For the past few weeks I’ve been getting a Ricko-like onslaught of contributions from a reader who prefers to be known as the Hungry Hungry Hipster. As I’ve explained to this person, I prefer not to credit people by their pseudonyms, because I think using real names leads to better accountability and keeps the site from being cluttered with ridiculous screen names (like, y’know, Hungry Hungry Hipster). “No problem,” said HHH, “just don’t credit me if you don’t want to.” And so a lot of uncredited Ticker items in recent weeks have actually come from HHH, whoever he or she may be (although I have a hunch).
Lately, though, HHH has come up with some truly heroic contributions — contributions that merit more than just an uncredited Ticker mention. Today we’ll look at one of them. It concerns a 1980s video game I hadn’t been familiar with (which isn’t saying much, since I’m not familiar with any video game), called Tecmo Bowl. I’ll let HHH take over from here:
Tecmo Bowl was a popular football video game for the original Nintendo Entertainment System in the late ’80s. In 1988, Tecmo was able to get a license from the NFL Players Association but was unable to get a license for NFL team nicknames and logos. So in the game, there are real players’ names and jersey numbers, but they play for nickname-less cities. For example, Elway plays for Denver and Marino plays for Miami, but there is no mention of Broncos or Dolphins in the game.
Tecmo’s on-field uniforms, however, DO have the same colors as their real-life counterparts — with one exception: the Seattle Seahawks have pink uniforms and a purple end zone (all the other team’s end zones are rendered in proper team colors). There has never been an explanation for this.
Most of the Tecmo helmets are shown in accurate team colors, but with unique “fantasy” logos. But during the opening introductory sequence of the game, all the teams have white helmets with orange facemasks (and they’re the old-school two-bar facemasks, which hardly anybody besides Mark Duper wore in 1988) and unique “fantasy” logos.
For a while I’ve thought t-shirts featuring these helmets would be really awesome, especially to wear to games of the real teams and see how many fans recognize the helmet as being from Tecmo Bowl. Also, DIY replica helmets, complete with orange two-bar facemasks, would be absolutely awesome!
Finally, I’ve also attached a screen shot of the “World Football Championship” trophy, which is what you’re awarded when you win the championship game in Tecmo Bowl. They didn’t have the rights to use the term “Super Bowl” or show the Vince Lombardi Trophy.
Faaaaascinating stuff. I’ll be presenting more HHH material soon. Meanwhile, that sound you hear in the background is gumball king Bill Jones scurrying off to make a set of Tecmo helmets for his collection.

Not all 3500. More than several teams don’t have all of their available combos from the game showing. For example, LSU’s less-used purple-and-gold combo is listed, but not their more-used white-and-gold combo.

Speaking of video games, anyone else play “Bases Loaded” years ago? As a kid, I’d had no idea that it was based on a fully-licensed Japanese game — the uniform colors and jersey numbers are taken directly from 1987 Nippon Pro Baseball! (Though I did wonder why so many of the pitchers had such low numbers — in Japan that’s almost a rule.)
A great game, but it’s also a bit racist. If certain batters get hit in the head with pitches, they charge the mound and start a brawl. Those players are, with one exception, all foreign.

Tecmo Bowl!!!! I should point out, and come off like a bigger dork than I already am, that the screenshots in the post are from Tecmo Super Bowl which was actually the sequel to the original Tecmo Bowl of the amazing Bo Jackson running and Lawrence Taylor blocking of extra points!
Bases Loaded!!! DC was the squad with Fendy! Remember the umps names were like Yuk, Boo, Bum and Dum. Utah’s leadoff guy was the fastest in the game if I remember correctly. Used to steal bases with him all the time. I remember buying Bases Loaded 2 The Second Season thinking “why am I buying a sequel to a sports game, I’m an idiot”…well, many versions of Madden and many millions of dollars later, I’m not so dumb after all!
There was a third version of the game for the NES with Ryne Sandberg on the cover, then they moved the game to SNES but it really never had as much buzz.
I know it’s neat to play games like Madden, NCAA, MLB, NBA and NHL and play with real players and teams but there was something neat about playing with fictious teams and players. Surely an extension for those of us that used to draw made up logos and leagues.

Looking at some photos of last night’s Angels-Rangers game (nice win by the Halos!) I noticed that the number on Salty’s Knee Savers (25) doesn’t match his own number (21). I looked up some older pics of him and noticed that when he was with ATL he wore 19 and his Knee Savers matched. TEX has no other catchers who wear 25, so I wondering if any Rangers fans may know if this number discrepency would be intentional or a manufacturer’s mistake worthy of the Natinals.

I had 2 EA sports games that didn’t have full licenses for my Sega Genesis back in the day
College Football and MLB
for the college football, teams that were state’s names (Michigan, Colorado, etc.) were fine, but anything else was the campus city name (State College, South Bend, Columbus, Palo Alto, East Lansing, etc.)

Cecil Fielder had 44, as did Randy Bass and many other American greats.For the second Bases Loaded game, they lost the NPB license, so the players all had “parody” names based on the real players. The jersey numbers were (boringly) switched to 11-18 for every team. Not until the 4th Bases Loaded did the license come back, so in that game you’ll see more realistic jersey numbers again. One of the Super NES Bases Loaded games has an MLB license and real parks and everything — it’s excellent. But I too prefer the fictional leagues and players — they never get out of date!

As a 38 year old, I vividly remember playing TI Football on my Texas Instruments computer in the early to mid 80’s against my cousin. There was a red team and a blue team. You got to name the team. You picked the plays, the computer ran the plays. Although the graphics were poor, I loved playing it. In fact, I still have my system. Great article on Tecmo Bowl.

The Roy Campanella picture is from his days with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Note the piping at the end of the sleeve and the Palmer method “s” that sticks out of his chest protector, with the start of the underlining of the word Dodgers. The Elite Giants had double decked lettering on their jerseys and the “s” would have been much lower.

Speaking of MLB licenses…I remember playing the MVP Baseball franchise and wondering who the heck the left fielder for the San Francisco Giants was. He was a big, white power hitter named Jon Dowd.
If you haven’t noticed yet, Barry Bonds was replaced because he withdrew his name from the MLBPA licensing agreement so that anytime someone wants to use his name and likeness they must deal directly with him.

Never had the original NES so I don’t know squat about Tecmo Bowl either. Paul, you’re not alone. However, I did have Micro League Baseball for my Atari 800 around the same time. The graphics were horrible but for a stats geek like me, it was nirvana. It had great teams from history such as the 1927 Yankees, 1968 Tigers, 1963 Dodgers and for some reason, the 1955 Senators. I actually made up a season schedule and kept hand-written box scores for all the games. I would even have playoffs and a championship at the end of the season. Sadly, none of records are with me now. Around 1991, I won a Super Nintendo from a Pepsi contest. One of the games I loved to rent was Super Bases Loaded. It too had ficticious teams/names and I also kept track of stats. I still have the SNES so I should probably go out and look for some of those games.

The 4 games on my NES that got played to death were Tecmo Super Bowl, Tecmo NBA Basketball, RBI Baseball, and Blades of Steel
Seriously, they just don’t make games like that anymore. I mean, the sequence when they have the ambulance pulling into the hospital when someone gets hurt on Tecmo Super Bowl or Tecmo NBA Basketball are priceless.

TECMO BOWL!!!!!! I’m so ecstatic that a post was done on this. Tecmo Bowl and Contra are in a first place tie for my absolute favorite game on the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System, for those who don’t know). I blew countless hours (only on the weekend when School was in) playing this.

I love Tecmo Bowl, but th 1991 Tecmo Super Bowl is really the best game ever made. Tecmo secured the NFL license, and brought in more plays, more players, etc. It was the most advanced game of its time.

From a quick glance there are two things wrong about NCAA Football 10’s uni’s:
1) Tennessee’s Orange is not “UT Orange” you as you can see from the fans in the stands.
and
2) This one makes me a bit upset. Oregon does not have their “Feathered” Uni’s. I’m sure EA was through dev before they were released to the pubic, but i would think EA contacts Nike.

what’s worse then the number 8 to this sports fan/art fag? laser printed “art”. it ain’t art, it’s a diy poster for the corn mother’s sake. have the common decency and respect to call it a poster on canvas. this laser printed art might not be in a gallery this time, but when it is it gets my panties in a bunch even worse. at least when i make my bobbles i call them “sculpture” in quotes, i don’t try to say it is high art. 200 bills for an hour of photoshop and pressing print? arrrrrrrrgh. with that price scale to time ratio, my “sculptures” just went up to 3,500 loonies, and a half dozen twonies.

At the PA state capitol today, they had the Commissioner’s Trophy, the Lombardi Trophy and the Stanley Cup side by side on display in the East Wing rotunda. Beautiful.
Afterwards, my uni geekdom returned and I did more research on the Penguins home uni white/yellow debate for their worst season ever, 1983-84. I found photos for only 31 of the 40 home games (the MISL’s Spirit actually got better coverage in both the Press and Post-Gazette), and in all 31 games, they wore yellow sweaters.
I even found a game (12/6 vs. Boston) where the Pens wore black socks with the yellow jerseys!
From this finding, I would think it very likely that the Pens wore the yellow for all 40 home games in 1983-84.

Back then it was a regular thing. The Cleveland Force easily outdrew the Cavs and were on radio and TV.
One of the reasons I don’t have the love for the Pens that I do for other Pittsburgh teams is that when Mario arrived, that about killed the Spirit. Fans started going to the hockey games and forgot about indoor soccer. The MISL really had something for a few years then it just vanished. What a shame. I’d rather see indoor soccer make a comeback over arena football.

this EA sports NCAA Football jerseys site is very inconsistent… first of all with the Oregon jerseys, they should have been one of the people to know about new jerseys.
and why is it that they show every single combination that Oregon can wear, but for Georgia they only show the blackout jerseys, and for miami they only show a couple combos of white and green… im still looking to see what else is left out, but wtf?

And I think things worked out well for Pittsburgh. Had they not got Mario, you might have been left with the Spirit AND the Pens gone. And an igloo there for concerts and the shriner’s circus.

You’re right about the Cavs back then. I could get seats for $2.50 in the upper deck (then my brother’s friends who were ushers would get me onto the floor). I remember getting $13 balcony seats at the Igloo when Mario first arrived. How much did those go for last season??
And yes, the indoor sports were really fun in person…especially for a young souvenir vendor walking the seats amidst hundreds of young female Force fans in their replica jerseys, big hair and tight jeans…

Someone asked yesterday about whether navy blue cleats has been worn in MLB. Pretty sure a number of the Yankees in the Mattingly era wore them. Possibly a few of the White Sox in the navy pants and “tails out” days, too. Both of which would have been the last half of the ’70s and the early ’80s, of course.

I love the video game topic today and all the great memories it brings, though I too logged more hours playing Tecmo Super Bowl than the original.
The mention of Blades of Steel always stirs some debate…for years I interpretted the inaudible voice during a pass as saying “Flip the ped” which clearly never made any sense, but my hockey knowledge at the time expanded no further than Blades of Steel itself. All these years later I’m a fairly avid hockey fan and occasionally yell “Flip the ped” as a joke among friends, only to find out the voice actually says “With the pass…”
As for Bases Loaded, I vaguely recall using Omaha a lot mostly because their colors were green/white (if I’m correct) and those were my grade school’s colors. Also, Omaha always paired up against a red/gray team (Utah? I believe) with a player named Lemmon (sp?) who’d charge the mound if plunked between 3rd-7th innings.
And we can’t talk NES sports games without naming Punch Out…007-373-5963…I’m not sure Mike Tyson himself could knock that code out of my memory! ;)

The best thing about RBI Baseball on the NES was when you would hit a screaming liner into foul territory, every once in a while the game would glitch and act as if you just nailed a fan in the head with the same ball reaction as an error.

A couple of weeks ago we were discussing unis that included hometown landmarks (Warriors’ cable car and Golden Gate Bridge, for ex.). The discussion expanded a bit to include logos, too. Was pretty sure I’d seen a version of the pitching Senator from ‘59 & ‘60 that included the Washington Monument.

In the late ’50s, the Kansas City Athletics often were called a “Yankees farm team.” Everytime someone got good (or sometimes even just hot) for the A’s, they ended up traded to the Yankees: Hector Lopez, Harry Simpson, Ralph Terry come to mind, as well as this guy. Nice look at the A’s unis.

Techmo Super Bowl…my older brother and I used to play that game a lot. I was always the Raiders, I like the team, and Bo was unstoppable – just don’t try to pass. My brother was always the Giants, he thought Dave Meggett was God. What I remember the most was that if we actually played head to head, I would almost always kick his butt, and he would reset the machine right before the end of the game, and he would never say that he lost to me. Most of the time he played in coach mode, where he would just call the plays, and the computer would do the playing. Coach mode would always give him an advantage for some reason, and he would beat me half the time. I would never be a richard like him and hit reset though.
During the Atari days, my little brother and I would play RealSports Baseball all the time. We never named our teams, but I would keep track of our stats.
Those were the days.

well, Nippert fixed the tag for a while, but it made a return appearance. Josh Lewin and Tom Grieve mentioned it so the camera operator zoomed in nice and tight
