Keith Hernandez Reveals Bizarre Man-Crush on Pirates Mascot

pirate-parrot-sq

Uni Watch has a highly sophisticated readership, so I’m sure you all know about furries. But just in case: Furries are people who like to dress up as animals — sometimes just “for fun,” often as a sexual fetish (further details here and here). Like most festishes, this one is generally harmless but baffling to outsiders. Think of it as an intense devotion to a very particular kind of uniform.

For the past several years, furries have been holding their annual convention in Pittsburgh. And that led to a positively surreal exchange between Mets broadcasters Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez during yesterday’s Mets/Pirates game. It all started when the camera lingered for a moment on the Pirates’ mascot. Here’s how it went from there:

Gary Cohen: There’s the Pirate Parrot, entertaining. One of many, uh, animal figures in town today.

Keith Hernandez: Saw a few around the hotel, didn’t we?

Cohen: The strangest convention I’ve ever seen is at our hotel here in Pittsburgh. You know, you travel around the country and you see parts of our society and our culture you never would’ve encountered anywhere else. There is a group of people, about 4,000 strong, convening in Pittsburgh this week. People who dress up as stuffed animals.

Hernandez: They’re cuddly bears. They like to cuddle.

Cohen: Bears, birds, dogs…

Hernandez: What are they called..?

Cohen: …wolves…

Hernandez: Ferriers..? All’s I know is I got in the elevator with four of them and the odor was horrific. [Camera shows the Pirate Parrot again.]

Cohen: Not the Pirate Parrot. He’s a natural mascot.

Hernandez: I had to get off. I’m not lyin’. I was on the 17th floor, goin’ down. I had to jump off on the 10th floor. I almost passed out.

Cohen: Guess those costumes don’t breathe very well. But it was, it was something, we walked into the hotel last night, comin’ from Milwaukee, and there was a, a, person in a wolf’s costume. And another person in a dog costume.

Hernandez: I saw a guy with, with his pet beaver. He had his hand, he was stroking it, he was petting it. [Long pause.] I’m serious! It was a, like a stuffed animal, and he was comforting it. Very bizarre.

Cohen: It’s a different world.

In case you missed that rather obvious cry for help, Hernandez said he “had to get off,” was “goin’ down,” and that he saw someone petting a beaver. Keith, Keith, no need to speak in code! You’re among friends here — nothing to be ashamed of. Just come out and admit you’re a total perv who fantasizes about banging the Philly Phanatic and then we can all move on with our lives.

As it turns out, this isn’t the first time a visiting team has been put in the same hotel as the furries. Meanwhile, a few hours after Cohen and Hernandez had their little exchange, this story broke in Denver. Hernandez’s whereabouts could not be ascertained.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Two items from Vince: First, a Little League manager is sending signals to his base coaches via text message. And here’s some good stuff about the history of Cavs uni numbers. … “On Wednesday night, MLS Seattle Sounders FC faced USL Portland Timbers,” writes Markus Kemp. “Both teams usually wear green, but there was an apparent uni snafu when the visiting Sounders ‘forgot’ to bring the secondary blue jerseys, forcing the home Timbers to switch to black. Gamesmanship?” … We all know Earl Weaver had a cigarette pocket sewn into his jersey. But look at this — supposedly a game-worn 1979 Frank Robinson jersey with a cig pocket. Was Robinson an Orioles coach in ’79? And did he smoke? Or is this just a scam? … Nike has struck a 10-year deal with UNC (with thanks to Brinke Guthrie). … Chris Mycoskie points out that the Cowboys’ new stadium is not in Dallas, as I said yesterday. It’s in Arlington. Duly noted. … Odd that the Benglas use this font for their locker nameplates. I’ve never seen it anywhere else in their graphics program (good spot by Matt Lesser). … Phil, forced to watch the Yankees last night because the Mets had already played a day game, notes that Melky Cabrera had something scribbled on his arm. Yo, Tyler Kepner, what’s it all about?

Over on ESPN, there’s a gallery that is very much in the holiday spirit. Presidential first pitches.

Know this is old news on this site, but here’s the promo for WNBA game between Lifelock and Farmers Insurance

Also got a shot of the Tigers pitcher with the two-letter last name – kind of funny, listening to games last year when Bobby Seay was pitching – was thinking his name was ‘Bobby C’ and would have a letter C on the back of his jersey…

Thanks again Ricko, just added the source pic. for this poster analysis.

Unbelievable. I just learned about furries the other day on some “ways to die” show. Some guy ate mushrooms and encountered them in the dessert. They shunned him. Later on, he tried to hook up with a real bear. He’s dead.

Holy crap – speaking of the WNBA, Diana Taurasi busted for DUI. Like it.

There was a CSI episode about the “Furries” phenomenon. The participants generally dress up as their favorite animal, and then use interesting chemicals to imitate pheromones of the animals in order to attract other “animals”.

Here’s an image from the episode, and you can read the episode transcript here.

By the way, the name of this particular CSI episode? Since the show is based in Las Vegas, it was titled “Fur and Loathing”. :o)

That thing “scribbled” on Cabrera’s arm looks a lot like what’s called a “tattoo”…?

the writing on melky cabrera’s arm is a new tattoo, i believe he got it in the offseason. its some kind of asian lettering.

Robinson was coach for the 79 O’s, no idea if he smoked or not. Maybe it was for keeping Earl’s spare?

The Anthrocon hotel is the same one virtually all the MLB teams use when they visit Pittsburgh. Last year’s victims were the Yankees.

Keith Hernandez works with a furry kind of guy all the time: http://gothamist.com...

ugh, the anthrocons….why ya gotta go there?!?!?

I just don’t know if I should laugh or cry that this group of people finds my hometown so “inviting” (apparently they LOVE it here).

Couldn’t just leave it at the fact that your beloved Mets took advantage of the Buccos blowing a 5-0 lead, only to blow an 8-5 lead in the bottom of the ninth but then win it in the 10th.

You couldn’t just rub in the fact that you were able to enjoy the game on TV while Pittsburgh folks had radio only (Damn you blackout rules, couldn’t have watched on Extra Innings if I wanted to).

Oh well, it’s one weekend a year….

<sarcasm>
It certainly is refreshing to see a completely unbiased investigative report on the local news. I’m so tired of reports that tell us how we’re supposed to feel about the subject of the investigation. Bravo, KDVR news.

Ironically, there is an article on The Smoking Gun about Furries from yesterday.

I find it interesting that CFL teams use abbreviations on their helmets to indicate the city and/or team nickname pretty much interchangeably.

It seems to be a de facto rule in the NFL that if you put letter abbreviations on the helmet, it always stands for the city, not the team nickname (with the Tennessee Titans being the only possible exception that I can think of).

Teams that have used a 1- or 2-letter abbreviation in their histories: 49ers, Bears, Packers, Giants, Broncos, Redskins, Chiefs, Broncos, Ravens, Jets Dolphins (and Titans?) — these abbreviations have always* stood for the city, not the nickname.

Team nicknames have always* been spelled out in full on the helmet: Jets, Giants, Raiders, Bengals, Steelers (except the brief period when the logo just said “Steel”)

*maybe it depends on my perception of “always”

“always”. no. wait, sometimes.

http://texassportssh...

The Bengals’ locker nameplate font is the same font used for the team’s wordmark.

As far as the texting Little League coach goes, the league I work for does not allow cellphones to be used on the field. So base coaches would not be using texts to get their instructions.

A few years ago I ejected a manager. From the parking lot, he talked to an assistant coach by cell, and thus continued to “coach” even though he was removed from the game.

Since then, cell phones were banned during the games.

I thought i was pointing out an exception to the hypothesis presented above.

Also a while back, someone noted that upon seeing a photo of John Elway early in his Bronco career, they didn’t realize Mizuno had made football cleats. At the time I mentioned that Joe Montana had worn them, too.

Found this ad clipping in my “NFL Misc” file just now.

Interesting to note that the Niners evidently had a playbook back cover that looked like the front cover. Or maybe that was more Bill Walsh “genius”; the secret was to read the book backwards!

Nah, was for the sake of the photoshoot, obviously.

Yeah. Stupid Natinals with a W on their caps.

on the letter on the helmets…

it always made me wonder what the “P” on the Phillies and Pirates caps stood for. For the Bucs, does it stand for Pittsburgh or Pirates (or lately, “Pathetic?”). And for the so-called Fightin’s, does the “P” mean Philadelphia or Phillies?

Same with the “C” on the Cubbies’ lids. “C” for Chicago or “C” for Cubs?

As the voiceover guy says on the timeless Tootsie Pop ad says, “The world may never know.”

Though the Falcon on the current helmet looks even more like an “F” than it did before. I take it that’s intentional?

Stands for Fatlanta (or is that spelled with a “ph”)?

The Falcons, and the Cardinals, should not have changed their logos. Both logos were way ahead of their time.

I went to a minor league baseball last night (Great Lakes Loons vs. Lansing Lugnuts), and had to suffer through 14 innings of black on black horror. I’m having trouble finding a picture though.

I thought Portland wore black for all non-USL home games. Here they wore black last night against the Bayern Munich reserves, even though Bayern were wearing red:

I agree with Ottawa’s “R” – Even though very simple – that logo personifies strength and toughness – exactly what you want from a logo of a football team.

Now to be little silly – but is there a tougher letter in the alphabet than the letter “R”, it looks tough , it sounds tough rrrrrrr! – can probably beat the sh&t out of almost any other letter.

Yep.

A lot of things wrong with the original Roughriders, but the death knell was when they changed the logo from the “R” to the stupid flaming “RR” and finally to Captain Crunch.

(sorry I’m not proficient enough at linking, but both later helmets are at Helmet Project)

And on the “furry” discussion with Hernandez, I’m sure Cohen must have been squirming the entire time wondering if he should bring up the Pittsburgh Drug Trials.

With all this CFL talk – has anyone mentioned that when the Montreal Alouettes first broke out their Pepsi can uniforms (1973?) – for at least one season, they stuck their logo at the front of their helmet as opposed to traditional side positions – does anyone have a picture of this.

Yup, DO love that uni. Biletnikoff wore it, too, of course, as well as Rodgers, Ferragamo and White Shoes.

The other goofy thing about Montreal – they play their home games in a tiny stadium on the McGill campus that even has a tree growing in the stands, but play one regular season and all playoff games at the Big O.

(I still have about a square foot of Molson Stadium astroturf kicking around somewhere, removed with a jackknife after a Queen’s-McGill game in about 1986)

Ah, what could be more American than football at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium? The color, the pagentry…the 20-yard end zones??

I would have loved to have seen a game there.

Hank Blalock has very similar tats on his forearms.

I agree – the Al’s Pepsi can look – was a great looking unis.

In regard to stadiums, prior to the Als moving into the Big “O” after the 1976 Olympics, I believe they played most of their games in the early 70’s at the “Autostade” as opposed to MacGill Stadium.

I remember the picture of Mike Smear (?), it was from Sports Illustrated – believe it or not. The CFL had signed that year – several high draft choices of the NFL (a very different era indeed).

One other quirk – although non-uni related – the CFL – and I think it was just in the Eastern Conference – use to have the finals of that conference as a two game total points affair – so the points of the first game would carry-over. Must have been a tough sell – if the first game was a blow-out.

I think I might have caught something on the Melky Cabrera picture. In those shots it looks like he is wearing the helment of Nick Swisher who is #33. Melky is #53 and the two numbers on the helment look like they are the same number so it can’t be 53

http://i4.ebayimg.co...

The “R” on the helmet was always awesome – also, check out Russ Jackson from the early 70s – huge numbers on the helmet and even bigger TV numbers.

I agree with Ottawa’s “R” – Even though very simple – that logo personifies strength and toughness – exactly what you want from a logo of a football team.

Now to be little silly – but is there a tougher letter in the alphabet than the letter “R”,

it looks tough , it sounds tough rrrrrrr! – can probably beat the sh&t out of almost any other letter.

Also don’t forget that “R” for Roughriders which sounds so tough that there were two teams in the CFL with the same name… although the Saskatchewan Roughriders went with the wimply “S” on the helmet.

Actually it could just stand for Riders. Ottawa was the Rough Riders while Sask. is the Roughriders. I’ve heard announcers say Eastern Riders vs. the Green Riders, too.

Those first alternates should be the only alternates. Very cool.

Incorrect, Jim. The Saskatchewan Roughriders were a different team than the Ottawa Rough Riders. Yes, the Ottawa franchise had a space in their name.

Canada’s centennial logo (1967) was a stylized maple leaf – see just to the left of the “C”

The Tiger Cats were using a portion of that maple leaf logo – I have no idea why they only used the upper part of it without the stem – it doesn’t really look like a leaf anymore.

haha I love the jumping tiger Ti Cat logo. But that one from 1967 is not as good.

The old Ottawa Rough Rider “R” logo was always great-looking on the helmets, but when I was a kid I was a Toronto Argonaut fan, and I always liked their big “A” logo too:

http://www.sportslog...

They previously had a reverse version of this with a white helmet and a blue letter.

I realize you probably know this – but the “A” that’s on your attachment – which is how it gets reflected on some retro uniforms – is not completely in line with the “A” from the early 70’s The “A” that I remember was slightly less “block” looking – one side of the A was quite thin and thinner than the other side – you can kind of see it in the pictures Ricko posted.

It’s funny – growing up I thought the CFL logos were too simplistic – i.e. a bunch of stylized letters, but while that may be the case, I think the overall look was were really quite good in the early to mid 70’s.
