We all know there are several MLB teams that have inconsistent logo sets. The “D” on the Tigers’ cap is different from the one on their jersey, the Yankees have several different “NY” treatments, and so on.
But until a few days ago, I didn’t realize (or maybe had just forgotten) that the A’s also fall into this category. They have two different treatments of their stylized “A” (note the differences in the “feet” and the apostrophes, among other subtle distinctions). Oddly, both logo treatments show up on the team’s home page banner. Even odder, they use one version on their caps and the other on their helmets. So the A’s don’t just have an inconsistent logo program; they have an inconsistent headwear logo program.
I hadn’t thought about any of this until reader Mark Halling pointed out that Jason Giambi had recently been wearing the cap version of the logo on his helmet. “He’s been wearing it for at least the past two or three weeks,” Mark wrote to me. “And he’s clearly the only one on the team wearing it.”
So yesterday afternoon I forwarded Mark’s observation to A’s equipment manager Steve Vucinich. “You may have finally ‘gotten’ me,” he wrote back. “My entire staff was in my office when I read your e-mail. Nobody had any idea about this. A batboy retrieved Giambi’s helmet and then checked with everyone else’s. We just checked about 100 helmets. That’s the ONLY one!”
I asked Steve if he had any insights as to how this could have happened, but at that point he had to start preparing for last night’s game (I’ll fill you in if/when he follows up with me). And those preparations apparently included a quick decal switcheroo to Giambi’s lid, which suddenly had the helmet version of the logo for last night’s game (here’s a quick comparison). So once again, a Uni Watch reader’s observation has had a direct on-field effect.
Meanwhile, there was another notable aspect to last night’s A’s/Tigers game: With stirrup-meister Josh Outman having undergone surgery earlier in the day, Oakland’s other starting pitchers gave him a hosiery salute (although Trevor Cahill appears to have worn his stirrups backwards). And Adam Kennedy wore low-cut ’rups, although he also wore them the night before, so it might be more of a slump-buster thing than an Outman tribute. Uni Watch Stirrup Club, Round Two: Robert Marshall’s UW Stirrup Club experiment was such a success that he’s decided to do it again. This month’s offering: the classic Bosox design (which looks as good on deck as it does at the plate).

The “A” on the helmet is not the same “A” in the logo. They switched to that logo around ‘95 … ‘96. That wonky “A” on the helmet has been there since ‘72 … when it actually matched the “A” on the jersey.
It’s cornfused me for years.

And those numbers aren’t too unusual. They are very similar to those on the Broncos’ uniforms. Although on some of their numbers the Broncos have a bit more decoration. (For lack of a better term)

You may be onto something. When I orignally wrote the piece for UW on the ‘79 World Series, once I finished capping the games, I did some statistical analysis. I opted to not put this in the submission to Paul because the post was already lengthy enough, but here goes:
The Pirates were 654-581 in the mix-and-match era (1977-1984). The team had an average record of 81.75 wins and 72.625 loss per year and in that time they only suffered two losing seasons, one of which was the strike-shortened 1981.
On the other hand, from 1985-2008, the team is 1753-2063 for an average record of 73.04166667 wins and 85.95833333 losses. They only have had four winning seasons in that time period (1988 and the 90-92 run).
There you have it!!!
Now, I must state that my analysis was about the mix-and-match unis. If you’re talking about the pillbox hats, you must remember they wore them, along with other NL teams, in 1976 (92-70 in Murtaugh’s last year, man, he would have looked ridiculous in some of those combos had he stayed around) and also, for two years after they ditched the mix-and-match (’85 and ‘86) they wore them with the gray roads.
It’s funny because in the spirit of Paul’s Page 2 piece yesterday, by ‘87 I was glad that they went back to a traditional crown because the pillbox look was quite dated. Now, I’d go back to it in a heartbeat.
Say what you will about poor management/ownership, players that didn’t perform, etc, etc, but I think there is a direct correlation with the demise of my ballclub and their ditching of my beloved mix-and-match and pillboxes!!!!
(Feel free to tell me what a geek I am and how I have too much time on my hands, etc, etc!)

A few things…
1. Back in the day—talking the late ’50s, early ’60s now— there was not necessarily a technological way to perfectly reproduce a fabric pattern for a decal master. That meant someone had to recreate (meaning draw) it from a visual reference. The new version was rarely perfect.
2. The visual aspect of the game (TV close ups, telephoto lenses) weren’t so critical. So, as in grenade throwing, close was good enough. Only the fans in the first few rows could see the difference.
3. Also in them olden days, decals were pretty fragile. The narrower the area, the more trouble it was to apply, and the more likely it would be to peel or crack (less available area for bonding to the helmet). Hence, many teams’ helmet logos (especially if the original was “thin”) were “fatter.” Tigers, A’s, Reds, Indians, Phillies, Pirates come to mind. Sometimes the difference was subtle, sometimes really obvious.
That help clear up things at all?

Actually, this is my favorite look: http://i.cdn.turner.... (favorite player, too). Probably because that was my first experience with baseball, but I always felt it was a good mix of modern and classic. But I’d love to see that hat in yellow-gold with the mix-and-matches.
At this point, though, they can switch to Penguins classic blue, or keep the Homestead Grays unis, or use a script Pitt logo (since Pitt isn’t using it), or wear the pillbox hats. I’m open to almost anything.

I have never seen the A’s use the cap-style logo on the helmets before so I don’t think that this is just an old helmet that’s been lying around.
I actually prefer the cap logo, it’s a cleaner design than the truncated helmet logo.

If I may delve into the cup conversation, I don’t find it odd that football players don’t wear cups at all. In the six years of my playing football through junior high and high schools (late 80s/early 90s) I only heard of one guy in our school that ever attempt to wear a cup and it didn’t last one quarter. Too uncomfortable.
On the flipside, in my 20-plus years of playing baseball and softball, I don’t think I ever (and I mean EVER) went without a cup. This probably started when I first started catching and stuck with me to other positions in both sports. I’m almost positive that I was the only guy that even thought of wearing a cup on my old slowpitch team.
I think a lot of the football non-wearing has to do with the pants and change of material. Football pants today are like spandex whereas baseball (even pre-pajama days) offer a little more room to accomodate the equipment.
Maybe back in the day when Chuck Bednarik was roaming both sides of the field and the material was different, it was easier to wear a cup but now, i don’t think so.

(Of course, the fact we’ve only played one game in the last seven weeks b/c of this horse$hit Northeast weather contributes to that, but I digress…)

Jays red uniforms look great – the bright sunshine from the open Dome really makes them look sharp.
One aesthetic quibble – the uniform looks great with the blue and black in the Jays wordmark, but the hat is only red and white. The hat looks bland in comparison and would look way better if the hat logo also had the blue and black trim.

Almost forgot…thank you Robert for taking care of the stirrups. Got mine on Monday, just awesome. Can’t wait to bust them out at the next softball game. It is often forgotten that in the mid ’50s, Pitt wore royal blue jerseys and old gold helmets and pants. Always thought a version of the ’80s Blue Bombers would be a good look for the Panthers…although I suppose some would say looks too much like Faust-era Notre Dame.

I got the new Mozilla Firefox 3.5 the other day. I most use IE for UW. I remembered that Firefox had a text to image add on or option and I tried it again. It is great for UW as you can see all the pics without clicking on it.
Anybody else know about the text to image function?
And since the CFL season is near I may do more CFL screen grabs. I had been busy and on the go lately and not had the time to contribute or post as much lately.

Not sure about Pronger, but Ray Emery’s photo is clearly photoshopped onto a picture of Marty Biron (evident because of the blocker).
Just felt like mentioning that because I remember last year the Lightning did this with Stamkos, although they screwed up by showing Stamkos shooting lefty. At least the Flyers didn’t do that with Pronger. Then again, he has played for 15 years while Stamkos was only a rookie. But Tampa definitely should have done some research first before making an embarrasing mistake like that, don’t you think?

I never noticed that the Lakers have 2 different logos as well. The wordmark on the chest of their jerseys is a simplified version of what is found in the logo featuring the basketball in the background.

Regarding the reader thinking the new New Mexico font was familiar – Several schools used something close on their hoops unis in the early ’90s. I think New Mexico was one of the schools and Minnesota another. I want to write they were Converse program unis.
