Back in the early 1990s, when I was working as a book editor, our company published a book called The Designer’s Guide to Charts and Diagrams, written by a guy named Nigel Holmes, who at the time was the “explanation graphics” editor for Time magazine. (He’s now an independent designer and consultant, with a nifty web site.) I was pretty fascinated by charts, so I was pissed off when the manuscript got assigned to one of the other production editors.
Nearly two decades later, I’m still fascinated by charts and diagrams. So I was excited when reader Ben Wideman recently pointed me toward the awkwardly named site Flip Flop Fly Ball, which presents a bunch of baseball-related info in diagrammatic form. Think of it as an interesting little cul de sac of athletics aesthetics. The topics range from the conventional (MLB field configurations, when each MLB team broke the color barrier) to the unusual (a projection of when the Yankees will run out of numbers, an analysis of World Baseball Classic rosters), but almost all of the charts are worth a look. The biggest surprise for me was this one, which shows the wide range of MLB stadium orientation. So much for the universality of “southpaw.”
The site is the work of a European gent named Craig Robinson, who appears to be particularly fascinated by the concept of distance. He’s charted the distance the Royals will travel this year, the distance of all the pitches in the 2006 MLB season, and the distance traveled by all the 2006 baserunners.
Robinson also appears to be a bit of a nut, and I mean that in the best way. Flip Flop Fly Ball shouldn’t be confused with his other web sites, which are called Flip Flop Flying, Flip Flop Flyin’, and the very simple and endearing CraigRobinson.com. In addition to all the charts, he also likes to create sports illustrations (many of which I quite like) and teeny-tiny pixilated portraits he calls minipops (whose charms elude me). I knew he was our kind of people when I saw that he collects and documents Tic Tac containers with Tic Tacs stuck on the inside. Now that’s a niche obsession!
I haven’t been in touch with Robinson yet, but I was surprised and pleased to see that he likes Uni Watch (see his blogroll on this page). Craig, get in touch once you see this post — I’d love to hear more about your work.
Meanwhile, just to bring things full-circle, here’s a baseball-related diagram by Nigel Holmes, the guy whose book I didn’t get to edit. Frankly, I like Robinson’s material better.
Danger, Will Robinson!: In what is probably a classic case of burying the lede, this small, unassuming item informs us that Oregon will be unveiling new football uniforms later today. “They are believed to be motocross-inspired,” says reader Ben Jamin, which I guess means the offensive line will look like this. Anyway, the whole thing will be live-streamed at goducks.com, 1pm Oregon time. I’ll say this much for Nike and Oregon: Good for them for keeping this announcement under wraps until a day before the unveiling.
New Sponsor Shout-Out: Everyone knows Ali and Foreman fought in the Rumble in the Jungle back in 1974 in Zaire. What you might not know is that there was also a huge soul music festival that was promoted alongside the fight. A new documentary called Soul Power, set to open on July 10th, takes a look at this mix of music and sports (sort of a music-themed companion to When We Were Kings) and the movie’s official merch licensee is now offering T-shirts — check out their ad in the right-hand rail.

The Yankees number situation is actually much worse than Flip Flop Fly Ball suggests. He posits that the Yankees “will have a player wearing the number 100 in the year 2220″, but 2220 is the year when the Yankees are projected to have retired their 100th number, which means that all their players will be in triple digits by then.
In fact you need a minimum of 40 numbers for the 40-man roster, and then 5-10 more for the manager and coaches. That’s about 50 numbers, not including non-roster spring training invitees, and the chart has the Yankees retiring their 50th number around 2090. Thirteen numbers have been taken off the table just since 1970; some people reading this may live to see that ugly day when there’s a triple-digit Yankee.
(In Japan, where the minor league squad has jersey numbers that don’t intersect with the majors, the coaches are stuck wearing 70-99, and the staffers (like #118 Hirai here and developmental players) are already in triple-figure territory.)
If there’s one thing that international soccer really gets right, it’s that the 23 men on the World Cup rosters wear 1-23, no exceptions, no retirements. Baseball should do this too — hand up the jerseys in the rafters, build monuments to your greats in the outfield, but let future players have the numbers. What better way to show your admiration for a past great than to wear the same number?

Argentina made a proposal to FIFA that it was going to retire the #10 for Diego Maradona.

They used the #10 at the 2002 World Cup and will continue to use it in the future.
Actually, the Asian Football Confederation has started to use uniform numbers that are matched to player names for their competitions. This is different than the 1-23 range because that way they can track an individual player’s fouls for disciplinary reasons easier.
So after the 2006 World Cup, some of the Japanese players wore numbers in the 60s and 70s in qualifying matches for the 2007 Asian Cup.

Of course, because everyone know that motocross far outranks major college football in the pantheon of spectator sports, so naturally a program such as Oregon would aspire to such a look.
That’s similar to the reasoning behind NFL teams longing to look like they play in the Arena league. It’s not good to look classy anymore. Junky is WAY cooler.

When I first saw the banana Newcastle kit, I laughed at them. No wonder they got relegated. I believe over at footballshirtculture one of the comments involved “Bananas in Pajamas.” I love it.
Also, the fact that numbers are fluid on national kits drives me insane. I now have wrongly numbered shirts for Podolski from Germany. My Germany kit collection suffers.

I love the idea of the markers for old home plate, pitchers mound, etc. I like the way Atlanta did it (see google earth or similar), like the way phillies used the granite, but the sloppy job the Mets did the concrete is awful. Com’on guys.

I’ve always liked how rugby does it. For the first 15 your number directly corresponds to your position. For the 7 reserves your number loosely corresponds to the positions you’re backing up (20 tends to be a scrum half etc.).
Since many rugby players are fairly versatile it means you sometimes have to pay attention to the pregame to follow your favorite player so I can see how some fans wouldn’t like it. It’s great for refs though and it can help fans follow which positions are doing what on the field (when you see #15 with the ball you know what to expect).
The thing I like about the rugby numbering system is that it emphasizes the team. You may be #14 today but you may not be #14 tomorrow. As a player it was a great motivator because you really wanted one of those first 15 numbers on game day. I know any time I saw someone on the field with “my” number it lit a fire under me to get it back.

Athletics had John Kennedy in 1957? JFK was fairly famous by then I imagine.
Three of the earliest teams brought people up mid-season; but then it seems that most teams broke camp or brougth people up in September until you get to the final two teams (Tigers and Red Sox) who were also mid-season callups.

I imagine it’s just a helmet the costumer found somewhere in a prop room. Could be from an earlier film, could just be a high school or college helmet that ended up part of a rummage sale. EASY RIDER was extremely low budget. Possibly the helmet belonged to someone working on the film, or they found it in a thrift store.

Ok, so harkening back to a few days ago, I’ve been working on a Sabermetric idea for accurately judging a defenceman’s production compared to the amount of time he’s on the ice. Basically, it works that if a d-man is on the ice, he’s on for both goals for and goals against, and the number of shifts he plays will determine his effectiveness overall while on the ice as an offensive player.
I’ll stop you at this point to say that if you don’t care, please skip the rest of this comment.
While everyone can tell how great a puck-moving defenceman is by points, it’s much harder to see a d-man’s overall value in terms of playing both sides of the puck. And the numbers are surprising when calculated using this formula.
Now the value is simply a value. It does not tell how many points a player will score or how many goals he is responsible for or against. It is simply a scoring system to determine who plays well on both sides of the puck.
I’m still doing some testing on the calculations, but the Norris Trophy candidates were calculated with the following scores:
Mike Green = 3.982
Zdeno Chara = 3.772
Niklas Lidstrom = 3.763
Of course, Chara won, but these three are the highest-ranked defencemen I have calculated thus far, proving that their overall effectiveness can be calculated.
Brendan Witt, largely thought to be the worst defenceman this past season, actually ended up with a negative value at -0.759.
And free agent Rob Scuderi, who will most likely receive a substantial raise, came in with a 1.878 – higher than Dion Phaneuf (1.254), John-Michael Liles (0.603), and Jay Bouwmeester (1.345). All of those players finished higher in the scoring standings, and all three are being paid far higher than Scuderi.

On the flip side of this, Rob Scuderi only had 16 points this season, but he turned in a spectacular defensive effort with a +23. That’s why his value of 1.878 is much higher than both Komisarek and Phaneuf despite Phaneuf outscoring him nearly 3-to-1.

Ok, after looking at the top-10 in defencemen scoring, here is how they rank according to the formula:
Name (Placement in scoring) = formula score
M. Green (1st) = 3.982
N. Lidstrom (3rd) = 3.763
B. Rafalski (5th) = 3.304
D. Boyle (6th) = 2.954
B. Campbell (10th) = 2.803
A. Markov (2nd) = 2.217
S. Neidermayer (4th) = 1.920
S. Souray (9th) = 1.890
S. Weber (8th) = 1.809
M. Streit (7th) = 1.621
The teams that struggled defensively are skewed more towards the bottom of the top-10. As you can see, Mark Streit, who played for the Islanders this season, moves down from 7th to 10th in the top-10. In fact, he would slide way down the list if we expand it to the top-20.
Again, factoring in the defensive side of the puck changes a player’s “effectiveness” for his team.
I’m open to suggestions in looking at other ways to measure this. If any of the baseball people have suggestions, please feel free.

Rob Dibble was on the Steve Czaben show this morning and their conversation somehow got to what team Dibbs rooted for growing up. Although he hails from Massachusetts, the Red Sox weren’t his team. He was actually a fan of the A’s.
This puzzled Czabe so he asked how he ended up liking them and his answer was twofold:
First, he thought the pitchers with all the interesting names (Blue Moon Odom, Vida Blue, Rollie Fingers and Catfish Hunter were referenced) were neat.
The other part, you guessed it, the cool uniforms. Although the conversation really didn’t go anywhere from there, I thought today was a neat day for this conversation to take place since the new Oregon Ducks unis are being unveiled today.
I recall past conversations about today’s youth being influenced by cool unis to either be a fan or actually go to a school. Interesting to see this isn’t exactly a new concept.

Jeremy, I remember that Japan Football Association numbering problem from a few years ago. Wasn’t there some kind of snafu when submitting the rosters, so that 1-30 couldn’t be reassigned to the players that they actually wanted on the team, and so the people who ended up playing got stuck with those high numbers?
I like the numbering system that the J-League uses (or used to use; it might have changed in recent years) — players can choose any number they like from 1-40, and if more than 40 players ever suit up, the additional ones have to go in order: 41, 42, 43…
In high school baseball, the regulars always get their positions as jersey numbers, with the two backup pitchers wearing 10 and 11, the backup catcher wearing 12, and the others having 13-16. Pitchers take great pride in being handed the #1 jersey. Very much like rugby.

And the other away is a gray (”steel”) pant and helmet with a gray helmet. This away has gray instead of green numbers and wings.
“A lot better variations” according to the guy. I have to agree. The wings are different, but I like them and other then that and the goofy font it’s a clean design. Much better then their last set.

Could Nike pat themselves on the back a little more during this press conference? The uniforms are a lot more toned down, but in my opinion the wings look cheap. Funny to hear the Nike Rep’s reaction to the reporter asking if they still have the flames on the helmet, he sounded as if he was ashamed they were ever there.

I’m a lifelong Duck fan, 12 year season ticket holder, and 34 years old…I have to say, I like these unis. They’re not what I would have designed, but I also understand that I’m no longer of the college generation.
Not a huge fan of the wings, since they’re not really “duck wings” but more “Trojan/Spartan armor” wings, but whatever. I can get over it.
No flames. No cammo (like basketball). Dont mind the steel/silver look. I will never, ever, be a fan of the black. But if the kids like it, then so be it.

Thoughts on specific charts there:
Major League parks – The Naming Rights seems too basic, especially since Rogers Centre is broken out because it’s named for the current owners. Other parks, like Busch and Wrigley were named after previous owners, and thus should be in some sort of similar category.
I’ve always wondered about the Home Team Dugouts chart. Pity he didn’t include bullpen locations.
I’d like to see the travel chart for all teams, that’d be pretty spiffy.
For the Retired Numbers, it made me go look at the Washington Nationals page he referenced. Turns out the Nationals have a page for Franchise Retired numbers ( http://washington.na...) where they’ve retired #10 twice, but going to their roster page I see that Ronnie Belliard is currently assigned that number. I guess retiring the number twice wasn’t good enough.
The NL & AL history chart is my favorite of the bunch. I didn’t realize that the Tigers are the only original AL team that’s had the same name and location since the league was founded. There is so much nifty information in that one graphic.
Something is needed to fill in all the green space on the 2009 ticket prices chart due to those high priced seats in a few parks.

so we all knew the sixers would do this. at first glance, it seems the blue is a bit lighter than it was in the 80s. i’m not opposed to this. i’d love to see the standard white homes and red roads, but i’d LOVE to se a road blue uniform as an alternate, just simply inverting the red roads. and i don’t suppose it’s too late to hope for a remake of the 1977 uniforms, which nowadays would look spectacular, given the greater amount of material to work with.

In a rather bizarre twist of events in our men’s softball league, our team has finally cleared security clearance for our game tomorrow.
Now, you might be asking why we would need security clearance. The reason? We’re playing in a prison.
Without a word of a lie, we play a team of inmates tomorrow evening inside the prison. I’m not sure if they’ll allow me to bring my camera in, but I’m gonna try to get photos if possible.

I’m at US Cellular Field for tonight’s White Sox-Dodgers game. They are selling MLB Authentic Sox jerseys in the 1959 style (similar to the throwbacks they wore against the Dodgers in 2005, except in white, as opposed to cream). Perhaps the Sox will go throwback during this series.

If you’re in your 20’s and dont like them, I have a funny feeling you’re in the minority (and good for you). I’m in my 30’s, and I am sure most of ‘us’ share my sentiments about not liking them all that much. But they’re not targeting “us”…
I’m just glad the diamond plate is gone. Now if only the basketball team will lose the cammo. Good God…

The center ridge of the carbon helmet has the Oregon wordmark repeated.
The Chinstrap is also a matching carbon-fiber pattern.
Overall, they remain different and innovative yet they are a bit more toned down.
I still wish that theu would go with yellow facemasks to actually resemble ducks.

personally i think they’re an improvement over the previous gen (belotti 1.0?) of unis, but the one set i really did like…yellow over yellow…appears to no longer be an option :(

Snoop also wore a homestead Grays sweatshirt in the “Gin and Juice” video.
I’m coming up blank on one thing though, I thought that Snoop also wore the PITTSBURGH diagonally jersey with #1 and “WHATS MY NAME: in a video but I can’t seem to find it.

Once the throwback culture took hold, seeing rappers in jerseys in videos was passe but at this time, it was rare.
I also remember Kadeem Hardison on a Different World wearing jerseys on the show. I konw most people remember the flip up sunglasses for the Dwayne Wayne role, but as a uni-geek, I remember him wearing the jerseys. Emmitt Smith, Warren moon and Doug Williams are all jerseys that come to mind. Again, this was well before the buying ad selling of NFL jerseys was as widespread as it is now.
And I’ve got love for the Sugarhill Gang. Rapper’s Delight was an old karoke favorite of mine. Even performed it at my own wedding!

So I turn on the TB and there are the Giants playing at the A’s. A’s wearing their black jerseys and hats- first time I’ve seen them. I go, “Aaagh, those things are horrible! Why would they wear black? That’s not part of the color scheme!”

We’ve linked to the Blue Jays’ Canada Day jersey before, but here’s a picture of the uniform as it looks on a real human being – in this case, Scott Richmond.
One point: I’m almost certain the Jays will wear their “Stars & Stripes” cap (actually a Canadian flag inside a modern Jays logo on a red cap) instead of the cap that Richmond is sporting in the picture.
Canada Day is July 1. The Jays are playing a 1 p.m. game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

All in all, the unis aren’t bad. I like the yellow and green; but I’ve never met a steel duck, so the carbon helmets are just asking for criticism. Lose that and give them a less-ugly number font and you’ve got something.
By the way, I know it’s very 21st century to look tough (look at a football program from the 80s and see how many guys smiled then), but if the players helped design these unis you’d think they’d look a little happier.
