I’m back today, joined by Lance Smith (a/k/a “Squiddie”), whose unofficial UW title has got to be “Life Historian.” He’ll be taking us through a wonderful journey today of the Cream City, vis-à-vis the first Major League Baseball franchise to call Milwaukee home, the Braves. Lance weaves a wonderful tale through his incredibly through and painstaking research of the Life archives:
On March 28, 1953, Lou Perini announced that he would be moving his Boston Braves to Milwaukee. The move had been approved 8-0 by the National League and by April 14, Milwaukee was ready for the ceremonial first pitch. (OK, Lance thinks that was the first pitch in 1957 but you get the idea.)
This was the first major league franchise shift in 50 years and the initial enthusiasm by the Milwaukee fans meant it received some attention in Life magazine. If you look through the Life photo archives you can find some choice images from the early days in 1953 and during the teams successes in 1957 and 1958.
So what did the Braves find when the moved to Milwaukee?
• Attractive young women in faux Native American head gear
• Warren Spahn and his wife got a visit by the Welcome Wagon. Included in their welcome gifts were a book on playing winning baseball and a six pack of Grandpa Graf’s.
• Some protest (A 35 hour work week? Lance guesses they did elect Frank P. Zeidler, a Socialist, as mayor in 1948 and he was still in office in 1953.)
• Sausages.
• More sausage. That’s pitcher Max Surkont. Note the back of the dugout jacket in his locker.
• Mr and Mrs. Spahn again. (No, they’re not the ones drinking the PBR.) Of course, some players played with their food.
But, no matter where they went, there were attentive fans.
The young women of Milwaukee seemed smitten with Eddie Matthews. Even bringing him gifts at the park. Though it was manager Charlie Grimm who got a puppy. Fred Haney, Grimm’s replacement, would receive cheese from a beauty queen. Joe Adcock would also get some attention from royalty.
The Milwaukee Braves could also expect colorful crowds — Often SRO and sometimes sitting room only. Crowds often included members of the clergy and fashionable young ladies. Often more hirsute than average, but with a good appreciation for a fine newspaper like the Milwaukee Journal. Of course, not everyone at the park was most interested in the game.
Milwaukee did gain a lively booster club with more faux Native-American headgear, shirts with swanky embroidery and a fondness for Blatz beer.
Thanks, Lance. Always a great trip down memory lane when you delve into the Life archives!

IMPORTANT INFO regarding the Baltimore party: Paul here, with a last-minute change of venue announcement regarding the Baltimore party tomorrow. Due to a mix-up (read: poor advance research on my part), we will NOT be meeting at Hillendale Lanes. Instead, we’ll be meeting at Racers, tomorrow night at 7pm. Kirsten and I will have to head back to NYC at 9:30, so we’ll have a solid two and a half hours of Uni Watch fun, OK? OK.
IMPORTANT INFO about something else: The next round of “Naming Wrongs” shirts is finally ready to go, and I think you’ll agree they look pretty sharp. Check ’em out here (or see the individual pages for the Comiskey, Joe Robbie, Mile High, and Jake shirts). These won’t ship until July 13th, but we’re taking pre-orders now. You know what to do.
The Proctor Chronicles: Yesterday I linked to several photos of the Buffalo Sabres wearing “mismatched” stripes on their sleeves and hems. That prompted sporting goods scholar Terry Proctor to check in with an explanation:
Dear Phil,
A little background on the Sabres’ original uniform gaffe might help to set things straight. First, the Sabres’ first uniforms in their inaugural year of 1970-71 were made in the style that the Toronto Maple Leafs had just abandoned. Sabres’ Coach/GM George “Punch” Imlach was formerly the head man in Toronto and liked the style of uniform that his Leafs wore in winning the 1967 Stanley Cup.
When he learned that Toronto was changing styles for ‘70-’71 Punch decided to make the new Sabres into clones of the Leafs, albeit adding the Gold trim. The late Frank Rowe, who with his wife Vi ran the C-C-M warehouse in Buffalo and supplied all of the skates, pads, gloves and sticks for many NHL and AHL teams (including the Sabres and Rochester Americans), told me this story years ago. Frank Rowe was a regular visitor to NHL & AHL dressing rooms and one of the “good guys” in the sporting goods business. Many times we would send a broken Amerk player’s skate to Buffalo via Trailways bus after a Friday game in Rochester. Frank would pick up the skate after midnight, repair it and the meet the Amerks’ bus as it passed through Exit 50 of the NYS Thruway in Williamsville en route to Cleveland for a Saturday night game. That was the kind of guy Frank Rowe was.
The Sabres’ new uniforms were ordered but were running late, so much so that they played their first couple of exhibition games wearing the Red, White and Blue uniforms of the AHL Buffalo Bisons that they replaced. The Sabres’ first trainer/equipment manager was Frank Christie who had been in the same job with the Bisons since the 1940s. Since the Sabres used the same dressing room as the Bisons all of the Herd’s unis were still there. Frankie just passed out the Bisons’ old gear at the start.
When the Sabres’ uniforms finally arrived from Rawlings it was noticed that the body striping was reversed from the sleeve stripes. With time against them in ordering a new set of White sweaters Imlach in effect said, “Screw it! We’re wearing these!” So what was an innocent manufacturing goof thus became part of Sabres uniform tradition and history. And if you look closely at original Sabres socks you will note that they have the narrow Northwestern-style striping of the Maple Leafs. Somewhere down the line the stripes all became equal.
Also, pictures of Sabres early practice sessions show Gilbert Perreault and others wearing those Bisons’ “Pepsi-bottle cap” sweaters.
Guess The Game From The Scoreboard: It’s impossible to stump you folks. I think. Got a couple here that just may do that. As always, same rules apply — don’t post the answer in the comments, but simply say “I got it” and go to baseball almanac or retrosheet and post the link to the game. Date, location and final score please. See if you can get them both.
Here’s the first one — remember, it’s the game from the STADIUM where the scoreboard is located. Guess The Game
This one might be a little bit harder. Clues are there though. (This pic comes courtesy of Chris Staggs) Guess The Game
Uni Watch Ticker: Reader Melvin Nieves saw the weekend post, A Reversal of Fortune Color and sent the following note: “Your recent uni-watch article on brand re-coloring reminds me of a set of Padres jersey concepts my partner and I put together for our blog. We find the current Padres jersey set boring, the colors aren’t traditional Padres colors, and they lack a connection to the Friar mascot. The worst part though, is they look just like Milwaukee’s uniforms! We came up with a plan to fix these issues, and I mocked them up in Photoshop (Home and Away). We believe these concepts are unique, attractive, we like the return to traditional brown, and they maintain a connection to the current jerseys. Fans love the sand color, so we think that should stay as well. More info is available here.” … An anonymous friend noticed, with Jerry West as “the NBA logo,” was this photo of Dave Kingman used as the inspiration for Barrelman? Eerie (here they are side by side)… Ben Walsh checks in with another in the myriad number of Worst Uniform Ever articles … “When I heard that the Clippers might move (just a rumor!),” writes Yossi Katz “I started to think what if they came to Saint Louis? What would they be called? Then I (with a little help) made these uniforms. They are the Saint Louis Archers. The white is the home, the gold the road, and the blue the alternate. On the blue, the light blue waves on each side represent the two rivers (Missouri and Mississippi) coming together and continuing down the shorts as one. Note the Arch on the shorts. The main logo is on the home jersey, the alternate on the alternate. What do you think?” — Readers? Thoughts? … The Junior World Championship of American Football is being held at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton later on in June, writes Zac Neubauer. A nice surprise is there doesn’t seem to be any ads. There is a full media gallery on their website. Zac included a shot of Team USA. … Christopher Falvey wasn’t sure if we ever posted this, but apparently Gordie Howe went FNOB back in the day. He found it on this classic video from Chicago: Fast forward to about 1:15 to see a strange animated AL logo too! The whole video is pretty cool. Chris notes, “And, no, I have no idea what the heck is going on with the commercial at 2:30. Ha!” … Although stills from this have been posted, Jason Rypkema found an article with some real neat shots of the some of the AFL throwbacks … Interesting uni tidbit from B. Mitchell from last week’s Italy v New Zealand Friendly warmup match in South Africa, preceeding the Confederation Cup. The New Zealand’s soccer team, is known as “The All-Whites” and they wore a full black kit, like their rugby countrymen. Italy is famously known as the Azzurri (The Blues) and they wore all white kits. … Intersting find from Jason Bernard, who discovered this “Pittsburgh Pirates” cap. He asks, “I wonder if Powers has that one?” … Our penultimate ticker item comes from Casey Wurzbach, who grabbed this shot of Joe Torre bearing gifts on the Tonight Show … Finally, Pablo Souki sent along a few pictures he found in this book, which is about the Asros’ baseball academy in Venezuela: First, pictures of what is supposed to be the first baseball game ever in Venezuela, in 1895. Second, the Caracas road uniform from the 1964-65 season. Not a great picture, but what Pablo loves about it is that it’s Pete Rose crossing home plate. And finally, Tequila Sunrise uniforms in 1990 at the Astros’ academy, as worn by sixteen-year-old Bobby Abreu.

When I saw the alleged “throwback” of the Bills white jersey the other day, I knew it was fake. The striping on the jersey and especially the pants were totally bogus. Then I saw today’s link to the Gary Land Photography site. OMG! What idiot came up with this design? Doesn’t anyone do research anymore?

Gordie Howe played on the Whalers with his sons Mark and Marty and I think all three of them went FNOB.

#5 by Teebz on 06.16.09 7:53 am |
HC is correct, but it didn’t only happen with the Whalers.
The Houston Aeros and New England Whalers had Mark and Marty go full name on the back since “M. Howe” or “Ma. Howe” wouldn’t be enough to separate them. In order to stick with the precedent being set with the younger Howes, Gordie Howe was also given the full name treatment.

Does anyone else not like the big “D” in the middle of the Padres road unis? It just seems big and wrong IMO. The font looks like it was made on a 1989 banner program for dos. Also, I like the brown better.

Thanks for the link to the odd “dual change” game between NZ and Italy. Looks like some manufacturers wanted to make sure the changes got some game action.
One odd thing with Italy. Their “World Cup Holders” patch is on their right shoulder on their change. On their primary it is centered beneath the collar.

A while back, I heard that somewhere around 11 a.m. Tuesday is the most stressful day-part of the week. Seems all the stuff we neglected to get up to speed on when we came back to work on Monday catches up with us late Tuesday morning.
In the six weeks or so since i learned that intriguing bit of “workplace lore”, I have noticed that, like clockwork, it gets extremely slow here at UW about this time every Tuesday (around 11 a.m. ET). Probably the slowest of any time during the workday all week, in fact.
So, either…
1. Many of us are in that mode, or…
2. It effects even the unemployed. LOL

Ok. Here is a uni question for all of ya.
Last night my wife and I were watching the PBS “American Experience” documentary on Roberto Clemente. If you haven’t seen, I highly recommend. LOTS of cool old uni shots, particularly from the Puerto Rican League. Plus the whole thing is FULL of stirrup porn for those of you who are into that. Anyhow, question is this.
One of the few color video clips was of Pittsburgh wearing their white with gold and black striping and black letter unis. Pretty standard. BUT, the team they were playing was wearing ALL gold and I mean SCREAMING CRAZY YELLOW unis with just a black stripe running down the outside of the arm and leg. I mean, these things were catastrophically bright and gaudy. It was just a short hit and run clip, kind of blurry in that early color tv way and I have no idea who the Bucs are playing there. Anyone?
I’m guessing it had to be late 60’s or very early 70’s because Clemente died in ‘72. Help my wife know who the “bumblebee team” was, cause I ain’t got the TEVO!

Did both of you guys also get upset when players who were born and raised in other countries played for the US national team? There are numerous examples. Today’s NY Times has an article about a German player, born and raised in Germany, lived all his life in Germany, but now wants to play for the USA because his father was an American soldier.
My opinion: why not? As long as a player conforms to the relevant international regulations, he should be able to try out for any team that those regulations allow. And that goes for Rossi, too. Is it because you guys think that the US is so much better than any other place that those rules shouldn’t apply if a guy is eligible to compete for a non-US team? One of the reasons I love the US is that we stand (usually) for fair play and the equal application of laws and regs. An Italian-American kid from Jersey wants to play for the Azzurri. His name is Giuseppi, fer crissake. I say Bona Fortuna, and I’m Irish….

They are great. But the away uniforms aren’t actually sand-colored; they’re khaki (which goes well with brown, also). The sand color on the Padres’ uniforms is the trim color on the white and navy jerseys (it has a bit of a sparkle to it, just like sand on the beach does).

Maybe THAT explains why they so horribly messed up the Cub hats for that game (cuz, y’know, it couldn’t have been a marketing move to sell more hats on account of the true ’50s Cubs hats being available in Wrigleyville at least since I saw them there in 1990).

I was looking at some more crowd shots and got to wondering something: What’s wrong with the guy in the white hat in the front?
No, what I was really wondering is when did fans start wearing baseball caps (and later jerseys) to games? Baseball caps are rare in most of these shots and the kid in front is one of the few fans I’ve seen wearing anything Braves related.
I’m sure it’s a gradual thing, but is the majority cap wearing crowd a 60s, 70s or later thing?

I would have to agree with Broadway Connie. The new rules are going to take some getting used to though.
The US national system is actually not that inclusive in the lower levels and (unlike other countries) do not actively look for the best players (it greatly favors its own development over actual skill). Several players who ended up playing for European national sides have specifically said they chose not to play for the US because no one talked to them about until it was too late.
The current rules would help the US like in the Jermain Jones case. The fact that players feel snubbed at the U-17 will become less of problem if the player is allowed to switch later. Of course, the new rules will probably mean a lot of South Americans representing countries in the Middle East!

Couple of thoughts after reading today’s comments:
The Atlanta Braves continued to issue the classic striped socks to players who “got it” until just a few years ago. Now that stirrups seem to be slowly returning, Braves players have to settle for plain blue.
The Cubs seemed to be major buzzkills during the early throwback years (most of the 90’s), refusing to co-operate even though the other (home) team would be paying for the uni’s. I believe there was one game in the 90’s where they agreed to wear throwbacks, but because of a loosing streak decided not to participate. I can’t recall more details, other than I checked out the game on the tube and was disappointed to see only one team in throwbacks. I’d say this might explain why the Cubs seem to be new, and not too accurate, at the throwback game.

About the Saint Louis Archers uni’s:
First of all, I like the name. Archers is significant to St. Louis because of the famous Gateway Arch monument, so good job on thinking of Archers. Did you pick gold and blue because those are the St. Louis Rams colors? Please explain your choice of gold and blue.
White homes: The logo needs work. I like how the arch is used as the A, but it really needs the crossbar that almost all capital A’s have. Without it, it looks empty, like something is missing. Too much whitespace inside the arch. The entire arch A should be blue to match the text. Right now, half of it is gold and the gold part doesn’t contrast enough with the white jersey. As far as the crossbar in the arch A, I would use the arrow. Have the feathered end of the arrow on the left side of the arch, and the arrowhead on the right side of the arch. This would actually make the arch look like a bow with an arrow over it, a “happy accident” as they say in the design world. Or you could have the feathered end of the arrow on the left of the arch, and have the arrow extend all the way over to the right, “through” the letters. It would act as the middle horizontal lines in the H and the E, and then the arrowhead would appear on the right of the S.
I like the way the arch appears on both sides of the shorts. This is a nice touch. If you do decide to use the arrow as the crossbar in the arch A, I would put the arrow over the arches on the shorts as well. Have the arrowheads point towards the front of the shorts, to suggest forward movement. Right now the arrow would need to be blue to contrast with the gold inside the arch.
Gold roads: The St. Louis across the chest is too simple and basic. This jersey looks like a 1950’s or 1960’s throwback, which in my opinion doesn’t work. A new team should have new looking uniforms. I would take the logo from the home uni’s, use the arrow as the arch A crossbar, and then put it on these too.
Blue alternates: Like the gold roads, the St. Louis across the chest is too simple, but I really like how the wavy lines on the front and back merge into the shorts and how they represent the two rivers that meet in St. Louis. Good job. I like when a team’s uniforms have a design element significant to the city they represent. For example, the 1967 Steelers jerseys featured a yellow “triangle” shape across the shoulders, and this was meant to represent downtown Pittsburgh, aka the Golden Triangle, “because that was the shape of the land created by the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers flowing into the Ohio River.” The Steelers owner “decided to incorporate this unique bit of the city’s geography into the Steelers new uniforms, and that’s how the triangle design came to be a part of the jersey.”
Here’s the front of the ‘67 Steelers jersey:

It cost just as much money to get it wrong as it does to get it right.
What gives with these APPALLING mistakes?

A logo for the St. Louis Archers showing hands shooting the ball, and the path of the ball forming the Gateway Arch would be really awesome! GREAT idea!

The Beer Barrel Man’s roots go all the way back to 1901, although the version Bud’s Brewers used first saw duty in 1947.
Cheap plug alert – I’ve linked to a great article on his history here:

Brian Bruney is back for the Yankees and his hat is lacking the new stadium patch. And it is also lacking the mlb logo on the back — it is completely logo-less on the back. Not sure where you even get a hat like that, which in all other respects appears to be a New Era
#174 by random reader on 06.16.09 9:33 pm |
No screen shots but Brian Bruney’s Yankee cap doesn’t have the giant Yankee Stadium Inaugural Season logo on the back. His hat doesn’t have the MLB logo on the back either so I’m not sure what’s going on with his cap.

Does your medical opinion take into account people over 6′4″? Generally, finding longer t-shirts is harder without going up sizes. But you’d know that being a doctor, right?
And for those who want bigger t-shirts, keep asking. I always look for larger sizes. I’m by no means “obese”, but I’m a big guy who likes to work out.
And I’m certainly a person who doesn’t take kindly to opinions of non-certified, non-credentialed wanna-be doctors about my body type.

I could see it now – the fans behind the basket could hold up little bullseye signs when the Archers are shooting free throws, and when the visitors are shooting, the fans at the corners of the baseline could hold up theirs.

put it in the books
did paul have any bets going with the balmer crew on the fans of the losers of tonights game having to wear the jersey (or colors) of the winners?

Not sure if anyone was watching, but the Twins TV announcers just had a stir up conversation. Dick Bremer said that the last Twin to wear stir ups was Terry Mullholland.
They didn’t really go too in depth, though.

What year is it that they’re supposed to be throwing back to?
I was happy to see that they went with the period-appropriate stirrups, but naturally I’m wondering if they actually had belted pants back then or if they wore sansabelts with those pullover jerseys.

Nobody wore their pants up that high with stirrups that high in any era. And to see just a smidgen of maroon, it’s just all wrong. And/Or I’m just all old. The pitcher had his hat cocked funny too. Damn kids.

I have a confession:
One jersey I have never understood the hate for: Tequila Sunrise.
I never really disliked it as much as most on this site and I think it’s
actually one of the better uniforms from that era.
on another note, arizona st was looking mighty fine tonight

Hey Paul and possibly the No Mas guys if you’re reading this,
I’m stoked that you all decided to use the Mile High idea – and I just preordered mine. However, there’s a small part that might confuse people (it did me). I know you’re using American Apparel who runs small up to 2x and 3x-4x with Gildan. According to the size chart, AA runs to a 50 (chest) and the Gildan’s don’t start until 56. I really need a 52 (preferably Gildan, as AA shirts tend to be cut wrong for me). It may help if under the size is also the make in the drop down, aka
L (A. Apparel)
XL (A. Apparel)
XXL (A. Apparel)
XXL (Gildan)
3XL (Gildan)
Unfortunately the 50-56 range is the sweet spot for us sport nerd fatties out there :P
Also, if this becomes an option, I’ll need to change my order to a Gildan. If not, then I’ll just lose weight to fit into it!

Does anyone know if those ASU uniforms were throwbacks? Those were really sharp.
Also, I took the picture that was the second scoreboard. It was a very entertaining game (i.e. the Cubs just about yakked it up.) If anyone wants to do a little more research, can you find the interesting non-baseball event that happened at that game?

I’ve found that Gildan runs at least a half-size too small. Their XXL’s fit like many XL’s. When shopping with the fun t-shirt shops online I have to see if I can see what brand the tag is, or I just order a XXL anyway.

I was reading SI and it had the following quote from Lew Krausse:
“I went out the way I came in. It was at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, and in the last game of the Pacific Coast League season in 1975. I convinced my manager to let me play leftfield. I came up to bat and I told the catcher and the umpire, ‘Back up we’re going to have a little barbecue today.’ I took off my jersey, took off my pants and laid them on home plate. I sprayed them with a bottle of lighter fluid, lit a match and set them on fire”
Could this be true? Can anyone confirm this or are there any pictures? It seems completely insane!

That would be my guess.
Based on the one I saw for sale at the Stadium, the Inaugural patch isn’t embroidered into the cap – it’s a esentially a vinyl decal affixed to the back. Not sureprising that one might have come off.
