Got a note the other day from reader Patrick Ryan. “I know you like the old Milwaukee Bucks logo,” he wrote. “But have you ever seen this?”
I most certainly had not. And my initial instinct was that it was that it might be a joke, because c’mon, a team called the Does? That’s just setting yourself up for boatload of “Doesn’t”-oriented wisecracks.
But as I quickly learned, the Does were a very real team that played in the short-lived Women’s Professional Basketball League, which existed from the fall of 1978 through the spring of 1981. I was in high school during that period, so you’d think I’d remember the WBL, but I don’t (I think it’s safe to say they weren’t marketed as aggressively as the WNBA). Lots of other people do, though: There’s a WBL Memories site, lots of information at Hoopedia (which is hosted by NBA.com), and even a book (much of which you can click through at Google Books).
So what about their uniforms? Here’s a rough summary of what I’ve discovered:
• Almost all the teams went untucked (a very conscious choice, as clearly shown in their promotional materials). At least one team, the New Jersey Gems, used the lower portion of the jersey for the team name. Other teams used contrast-piped hemlines, and still others left the lower-jersey area plain. At least one team, the Houston Angels, appears to have been afflicted with an inadvertent team-wide case of Philly tag.
• One team that did not go untucked (but maybe should have): the Iowa Cornets.
• The most interesting uniform was worn by the Chicago Hustle, whose jerseys had these cutaway semi-sleeves and johnny collars. According to that book I mentioned earlier, these uniforms were not popular with the players. (The rest of that page has more info about the league’s uniforms — recommended reading.)
• The aforementioned Does had these contrasting V panels sewn into the lower side areas (not sure what’s going on with the New York player in the center of that photo — almost looks like she’s wearing a zippered sweatshirt).
• The New England Gulls used a baseball-style script insignia.
• Some teams went NNOB, others had NOBs. The Philadelphia Fox (yes, that was really their name) highlight the player names with horizontal rules, and at least one team the Does, used nameplates — unusual for a basketball uniform.
• The San Francisco Pioneers had really nice warm-up outfits, which included little Golden Gate Bridge logos on the pant legs.
• The refs’ uniforms apparently changed during the life of the league — sometimes they’re wearing plain gray, other times zebra stripes (note the WBL chest logo).
• The league had its own ball, courtesy of Wilson.

As for the Does logo, which got me started on this little venture, their logo made some of the players uneasy. But look — it’s now become a high-priced collector’s item.

I think Morgan should keep the high pants and look into wearing his cap differently. I can’t remember if Paul has written about how and players wear their hats but I hate the flat brimmed, off to the side, ears tucked in look that morgan had going on Monday. Maybe the red hat was just too big but it looked ridiculous. I don’t think everybody should wear their hat like I want but somethings go just don’t look good.

It’s old news that the Sixers are getting new uniforms next year. Back in January Lara Price, Sixers’ Vice President of Business Operations told a group of season ticket holders that they will be switching back to to the classic logo and uniforms based on the 1982-83 championship season uniforms. Nothing has been leaked as of yet but I am eagerly awaiting their release.

Wow, must have partied too hard watching that Pens game because I just spent five minutes trying to figure out why the Twins would change their logo to a lower case n and s.(I figured out that it’s the end of Twins.)
I am so in love with those numbers on the Doe’s uniforms! Anyone know what style that is? I have totally agree with the player’s comments about the logo and how they can be offended by it…but I am so in love with that logo! It’s too damn cute not to like! It even has a tequila sunrise effect going on in her hairdo! I have to shallowly admit that if a WNBA team had a similarly sexy logo than I would probably follow that team, because if those Does were around they would be my favorite team.

I noticed that last night too, mainly because he was very demonstrative…he also snuck into view when in the 9th inning, Omir Santos got knocked by a foul ball and he checked on him.
The NYSBUA has very strict uniform guidelines that I must abide by.
For example, in the case of cold weather, I may wear my pullover jacket without the embroidered golf shirt underneath, as long as the base layer is red.
If I choose to wear the long sleeve golf shirt, I MUST wear the pullover.
In warm weather rec league ball, I may wear the baby blue embroidered golf shirt, but the base layer MUST be navy blue.
ETC, ETC. Needless to say, it looks as if I have been living out of my car for the past six weeks.

Great question, and a helmet modification I was not aware that Mullen wore. I didn’t get many Penguins games on TV back in the day when Mullen played, and there are few (if any) pics on the Internet of the back right of his helmet with the Blues, Flames, Bruins, or Penguins.
I’m switching to manual research mode, and I’ll let you know. He did attend Boston College, and was born in NY’s Hell’s Kitchen, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Re: Twins new wordmark…is it a trick of the lighting (or the signage), or does there appear to be a secondary color (gold?) between the red letter and white trim?
Looking at it again, perhaps this area of the signage will be lit up, and whatever lighting is in there is making it look off-white.

RE: The new Twins logo. Can anyone in downtown Minneapolis try to sneak over to the ballpark this afternoon and try to get a picture of it? They only had the “ns” as of yesterday, but maybe they’ll have more (or all) of it up this afternoon.
Count me amongst the disappointed who wanted them to go back to their beautiful 60s/70s era unis. Or at least an update of THAT, instead of an update of this ‘85 version.
For the guy wondering about the current Twins logo: It’s basically just that wordmark over a baseball. The hat insignia is the “TC” (for “Twin Cities,” if I had a nickel for everytime an out of towner asked me that), and the Two-Guys-Shaking-Hands logo is still used A LITTLE BIT, only on the occasional piece of merchandise, and maybe some random jacket sleeve patches. Mostly it’s a throwback thing.

It usually takes me hours to manipulate a 59 fifty before it fits my potato-shaped head the right way. Removing that useless liner in the front takes up the most time, I doubt many major leaguers take the time to do that. Maybe he just has a lumpy head and that is the way it is most comfortable…

One silly/cool thing about this current logo, though (which they seem to be keeping in the updated version), is that the underline calls out the word “WIN” within “tWINs”. A lot of people never really notice that, but I actually like it quite a bit.

The M for the Twins is not the same. It has rounded arches, the the bottom of the W is straight.

The main difference that I can see from the shot is that the serifs on the s will be curved as opposed to a straight corner. The n’s serif is smaller. Also, the script may be titled to completely horizontal as opposed to an angle. Which it is at present. This way everything from the uniform to stationary will be the same.

This article really gets you to think about how women’s sports have at times been not so much about equality, but instead, about sex. Even in our age of Title IX, I still think that women’s lacrosse is the biggest culprit.

I coached women’s volleyball for a long time when I was in university as well. The uniforms they wear aren’t the greatest, but they like them better than baggy uniforms because they have better range of motion without getting caught up in the bagginess.
I’m not saying it’s right, but if the players prefer the clothing, who are we to judge?

I have to agree with Teebz, that I prefer the form fitting uniforms.

Late last night I caught the last part of “The Babe” They had the part where Babe Ruth hit 3 HRs at Forbes Field. The Braves uni looked good and the Pirates were accurate too. Does anybody know if the other scenes were accurate uni wise?
Gee that John Goodman was so athletic. Also the Forbes Field looked ok from one shot. But the right field roof and so on was not. Ruth was supposed to have hit one over the right field roof correct?

I know UEFA imposes rules for jerseys in the Champs League — most notably to have a solid color on the back underneath the numerals. But today, ManU sported their solid white third jersey and while the shirt was unchanged, they switched the name/numeral font to Helvetica. Why?

I still haven’t seen the entire thing, but the more I’ve been looking at the “ns”, I’ve noticed that the serifs are a close match to the serifs on the team’s “TC” hat insignia. So it’s growing on me pretty quickly.
When they designed the new system in 87, they discarded the “TC.” So it wasn’t designed with the intention of matching. But it seems now that the TC has made its resurgence this decade, they are trying to not only update their current “Twins” wordmark, but actually tie it in to the TC much more than it currently is.
I’m suddenly hesitantly optimistic!

And so ends my experiment with DIY. I tired to take the black thermal shirt I had, taping off where the stripes would be on a 1930 blackhawks jersey to make the stripes look knit in (and to save some work), and it didn’t work out so well. First, the bleach bled under the tape, and the shirt also turned a light red instead of white. Shirt was a total loss.
I may still try again if I find a regular yellow long sleeve t. Trying a similar method with black dye for the chance to make a quakers jersey is still too good to pass up.
