By Phil Hecken
Happy Cinco de Mayo! In the past, Major League Baseball has “honored” this holiday by outfitting some teams in Latino heritage jerseys, some of which have been more successful than others. But the usual approach of putting “Los” in front of the team’s name (which PL has written about before) is so lazy and unimaginative. Another example of marketing gimmicks gone horribly wrong, almost offensively wrong.
So today I’m joined by UW Graphic Artist Paul Soto — a Mexican-American himself — who’s come up with some much better designs that MLB teams should use should they wish to acknowledge and honor their Spanish-speaking (or even non-Spanish) fans. Here, I’ll let him explain:
As a Mexican American I feel cheated by the NBA’s “Noche Latino” promotion. I personally know that many Latinos do tend to refer to their teams in “Spanglish” by placing “Los” before the English nickname. But others do recognize the teams in their translated form. When we’re being honored, I feel that the nicknames should be fully translated…where applicable.
The MLB curently has five teams that wear special jerseys with Spanish nicknames: the Mariners (Marineros), Brewers (Cerveceros), Giants (Gigantes), Mets (Los Mets), and Rangers (Los Rangers). Okay, so you can’t really do much with the Mets’ name, because Metropolitanos is too long, but I’ve figured out an interesting approach to that, as you’ll see.
I would love to see the MLB do a “Latin Week” where every team’s nickname is en español. Granted, some team names cannot be translated because they’re already simplified in English (Astros and Rockies, e.g.). They’ll have to stick to the “Los” approach.
What follows then, are some absolutely outstanding conceptual approaches Paulie has created for Major League Baseball teams to consider whenever they’d like to make a diligent and respectful attempt to honor and support the Latino community (and maybe move some quality merchandise in the process). Let’s take a look:
Arizona Diamondbacks: Paulie’s come up with two possible uniform iterations for the D-Backs: “Diamantes,” which basically translates to “diamonds” in English and “Vivoras”, which is a rough translation for rattlesnakes (which is what the name “Diamondbacks” referred to in the first place). He elaborates: “‘Diamondbacks’ is a simplified English name and really doesn’t have a translation. But I did find some who referred to them as ‘Vivoras’ and ‘Diamantes.’”
Atlanta Braves: Fairly straightforward, Paulie has created the “Bravos”.
Boston Red Sox: A very nice effort here, I really think this is sharp. And, given that the Red Sox have already worn six different uniform combinations this season, adding the “Medias Rojas” to the mix for a game or two would be a wonderful tip of the cap to the Latino population of New England.
Chicago Cubs: Paul has come up with the “Cachorros” for his hometown lads. The cachorros roughly translates to “cubs” or “pups,” and would be a fine one- or two-game edition of the beautiful Cubs home uniform.
Chicago White Sox: Heading to the south side of Chicago, we find Paulie has created the “Medias Blancas”, in a gorgeous Olde English font in classic White Sox style and colors.
Cincinnati Reds: A fairly straightforward translation of “Reds,” Mr. Soto has designated the “Rojos” as the uniform for the Cincinnati ball club should they decide to honor the Latino heritage and baseball fans in the Queen City.
Cleveland Indians: Another fairly straightforward jersey, like the Braves, here are the “Indios”.
Detroit Tigers: While this one is also straightforward, replacing the Olde English “D” with the “Tigres” wordmark gives this beautiful jersey a great look.
Kansas City Royals: Nice treatment here with the use of “Reales” to replace “Royals” in this conceptualization.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: What better tribute could a team that plays in “Los Angeles” have than to use a Spanish wordmark on their jerseys? What’s that? They don’t actually play in Los Angleles? No matter, the “Angelinos” could still play in Anaheim and look fine in these unis.
Minnesota Twins: This is definitely one of the cooler looking uniforms when translated for the Latino audience. But does the underline on “Mellizos” have the same effect as the underline of “win” in “Twins”?
New York Mets: While the “Mets” is itself a shortening for “Metropolitans” (or “New York Metropolitan Baseball Club”), Paulie has come up with the “Metros” for this team (and it sure beats the hell out of “Los” Mets). Paulie explains: “What if the Mets wore ‘Metros?’ A ‘Metro’ is the train station. Trains/public transportation is so vital to New York so I think it works well, no?”
New York Yankees: Moving from Queens to the Bronx, Paulie actually has created two possible uniforms for the Yanks: “Yanquis” using their “road” font and a second “Yanquis”, using a font similar to that seen here, and actually used here. Nice stuff.
Oakland Athletics: Pretty basic turning of “Athletics” into “Atléticos”.
Philadelphia Phillies: Paulie has placed your defending World Series Champions in these “Filis” unis. Hey, if they can’t put “WFC” on there, this is the next best thing.
Pittsburgh Pirates: If the Steel City were ever to decide to pick up on the Latino Heritage thing, the “Piratas” would have this uniform to don. I especially like the wordmark as shown in the ‘header’ of this paragraph.
St. Louis Cardinals: Another fine conceptualization, the “Cardenales” keeps the classic bird on bat while adjusting the red birds to their proper Spanish spelling.
Tampa Bay Rays: There are actually two wordmarks for the Rays, one ‘full’ and one a nickname. I have to think the longer one might be too ‘bulky’ for a major league uni, so it was good of Paul to provide us with a choice. Here’s how the “Rayas” would look in their Cinco de Mayo garb.
Texas Rangers: Another team to which Paulie has added a second wordmark, this is how the “Guardas” would appear on the diamond. Paulie explains further, “The Rangers in Spanish is ‘Guardabosques.’ It doesn’t quite sound as nice as Rangers does, not to mention it’s a long name, but how about if we shorten Guardabosques to ‘Guardas’? Now that is an informal second-person singular of guardar. It means to ’save’ and ‘keep.’ It kinda works like the Texas Rangers, the law enforcement that is which is the inspiration to the teams name. I’m not saying the translation is correct but I just wanted to put it out there.”
Toronto Blue Jays: One of the greatest looking wordmarks of the entire group, here’s how the Toronto “Azulejos” might look when they take the field.
Washington Nationals: The DC team would be outfitted in these “Nactionales” duds for the 2010 Cinco de Mayo night. Unless, of course, the campaign to dump the current home uni succeeds. But that’s what they wear now, and that’s what Paulie has envisioned.
That’s all for the uniforms. But you’ll note that not every team was represented. That’s because, as Paulie noted earlier, there are a few teams that don’t translate well. But he did accomplish the amazing feat of creating jerseys for 21 of the 30 teams (plus there was no need to design anything for the Marineros, Cerveceros, or Gigantes, since they already Get It™, and then there’s one team whose name is already in Spanish).
Thanks, Paulie, for another outstanding job. What say you, Uni Watchers? Think MLB should wear these jerseys once or twice a year? I sure do.

May Raffle: Paul here. Our friends at SoccerPro.com are back with another raffle, but this time it’s footwear-related: One lucky winner will be able to choose any pair of footwears (cleats, sandals, whatever) from the site’s extensive selection.
To enter, send a blank e-mail with your name in the subject line to the raffle address (not to the usual Uni Watch e-mail address, please) by this Thursday, May 7th, at 7pm eastern. One entry per person, except for Uni Watch membership program enrollees, who can send four entries. I’ll announce the winner on Friday.
I’m calling it an idea worth expanding: Our “I’m Calling It Shea” shirt (which is now available in 3X and 4X sizes, incidentally; remember, use the checkout code “uniwatch” for a 10% discount) has been wildly successful, with sales now numbering about 700. And we have an interesting promotion planned that should keep this project in the public eye a bit longer. More on that later.
Meanwhile, several of you have asked if we could make similar shirts for other cities and stadiums — “I’m Calling It the Jake” for Cleveland fans, for example. No Mas and I are definitely interested in doing this, but we’re not sure that we, as New Yorkers, are the best judges of which stadiums and arenas would be the best ones to focus on. So I’m asking you: Is there a particular “I’m Calling It [Whatever]” shirt you’d be interested in?
Remember, the theme here is our distaste for corporate-sponsored names. This can apply to facilities that were renamed (“I’m Calling It Skydome,” for example) or new corporate-named facilities that replaced non-corporate ones (“I’m Calling It Shea” falls into this category, and so would, say, “I’m Calling It Candlestick” or “I’m Calling It the Vet”). I’m not saying we’d necessarily do any of those hypothetical examples, because we don’t know if there would be much interest in any of them, but that’s where you come in. If there’s a specific “I’m Calling It [a non-douchebag name]” tee you’d be interested in, let me know. Thanks.

Bobble Non-Update: Lots of you have expressed interest in Robert Marshall’s custom-painted bobblehead dolls. And your interest will soon be rewarded with lots of info on how you can acquire one of them — but not today. Stay tuned.

I complimented him on his jersey, and his mom turned around and explained that she was up all night cutting out the felt so he could wear it to that game.”

Ahhh rookie hazing. As clever as the Jets thought they were with their tactics that Steelers are even better by having the rookies believe the teams Super Bowl winning quarterback has lost his men when caught a case of the swine flu while trying out to be a Mexican wrestler on a trip to Mexico a while ago.

In regards to the Ovechkin helmet, the same thing happened during the last round of the playoffs. Ovechkin got his helmet taken off and was passed one off the bench by teammate Boyd Gordon. The helmet stayed out there for a good 3-4 minutes before there was a break where it could be scooped up and returned.

Sorry, that is not rookie hazing on Mark Sanchez. That is former Arkansas QB Casey Dick. He signed as a non-drafted free agent with the Jets. Arkansas did have the decency to have him wear C. Dick as his NOB.

Oh, of course I glad no one was seriously injured.
It’s just that I imagine they’re absolutely shocked that such a thing could happen to an organization so Chosen.
Ricko, I’m going to ask for a slight retraction. At this time of your post, I was learning that the best man of my wedding WAS the one most seriously injured, and there was a chance he’d never walk again.
About a half-second before the contraption fell down, the moment wasn’t about football – it was about life.
I’m sure no harm was meant given the information at the time. But Rich Behm is a close friend first and foremost, before he’s an employee of the “Chosen”. “
Was thinking about that, and I’m sorry that it turned out the way it did. At the time of my post, all the reports (and I checked three different cable networks to be certain) said no one had been seriously injured. In fact, most of those reports said that only half dozen or so people had been inside at the time. Obviously, those reports were premature and inaccurate. Had I known what actually happened I’d never have posted what I did.
Although, it was reported this morning that the Cowboys did not have the structure inspected after it was re-roofed, as is required by law in Irvine. So I don’t think the story is over yet. At least not the legal ramifications of it.

Nice work putting together those Cinco de Mayo jersey designs. The Nats gave away t-shirts to fans last Saturday for latino heritage day. The had “Nacionles,” but there was a smal “Los” just above the “N.”

Sadly, the Nats did not actually wear this as their uniform. They sported the red home alts vs. the Cards (who managed to piss me off by giving Albert Pujols the day off.)

And I love some of these Spanish jerseys — Texas and Toronto look the best. Speaking as Cubs fan, I’d have the “achorros” part inside the big C like they do with “Cubs” in English, but as it is it’s not too bad. The “Tigres” also look pretty good.

Most of those Noche Latina jerseys are very well done, but half of the teams in baseball would be on the road, which might help clear up some of the less impressive ones. I’m thinking mainly about the “Filis,” which is just too short to work right (though there are others, that’s the one that stands out to me.) The way around that would be to do some latinized road jerseys. For example, we’d finally be able to get the city name on our roadies, since “Filadelfia” is a bit shorter than Philadelphia, and it’d still play in nicely.

I like the spirit of the Latin heritage week in the MLB, given the amount of Mesoamerican players and the ever growing fan base in the States. But the Blue Jays SHOULD NOT have that. Canada is bilingual, but with English and French. The Blue Jays should be called “les Geais Bleus”. French is a Latin language and better reflects political sensibilities here.

Excellent work by Paul Soto. Love that “Yanquis” jersey.
Speaking of Nueva York, I work a lot in Mexico and Cuba, and I’m always struck by the popularity of the Yankees cap wherever I go. In Cuba, there’s an element of political statement, of course. In the Mexican campo, it’s more like “I’m no bumpkin; I know about the wide world.” Or it could be just aesthetics. Though I’m a total Mets fan, I have to admit that none of the 943 attempts to intertwine the letters N and Y have come close to beauty of the Yankees’ version.
And speaking of the Mets, I should add (politely) that I think Soto is wrong to say that “Metros” would be a more satisfactory result in linguistic/euphonic terms than “Mets.” “Mets” sounds good in Spanish, bounces confidently out of the mouths of all New York hispanohablantes, and doesn’t conjure misleading references to underground trains. And though “Culebras” denotes snakes in general rather than rattlers in particular, I’d suggest that Arizona Culebras sounds pretty cool.

Ok, I like the league recognizing a certain group of fans or celebrating a specific day but what I don’t agree with is changing the names of the teams. I don’t think names should be changed EVER.
If I lived in Mexico, as an English speaking person, and was cheering for a local team called the Cerveceros I would not call them the Brewers. I would call them the Cerveceros.
I don’t call my friend Pedro, Peter, I call him Pedro. So why should the name of a team change?
Continue down the line… countries should remain the same, USA is USA, not E.-U. in French.
Again, I like the theory with the promotion just don’t agree with the implementation.

just to add two cents to todays entry…
i, myself (not speaking for paulie) am not advocating that these jerseys necessarily be worn…that should be up to the team and should be made after some form of consultation with the community
what i am advocating for is that if teams DO want to honor the latino bases of their communities with a special jersey, that they do it along the lines of what paulie has conceptualized — rather than taking the lazy and patronizing route of plopping “los” in front of the team name (‘los mets‘, ‘los rangers‘, or the equally weakass NBA efforts, etc.)

Hey Paul, here’s a suggestion for you. In past articles, you’ve imagined what a redesigned Miami Marlins jersey would look like, as well as how baseball jerseys would look if the home and away wording were swapped. Now, we have imagined uniforms for teams wishing to honor their Spanish-speaking fans.
To go along with these alternate-universe jersey theme, we can go into a complete alternate universe where baseball teams did not relocate in the way they have done in reality. How would these teams have designed their uniforms throughout the various design eras in baseball? To flesh this idea out further, think of the following scenarios:
1. How would the Saint Louis Browns have looked in the 70s double-knit polyester era?
2. Would the Philadelphia A’s have gone the Charlie Finley gold/green route, and if not, how would they look today?
3. What would a modern-day Seattle Pilots uniform look like?
And if anyone feels like tackling long-defunct NL teams (Louisville Grays, Cleveland Spiders) or even the Federal League, hey, go for it.

dont get me wrong, i definitely support the promotion! to me though, a team’s wordmark, or logo, or crest is gospel! not to be changed! not to be compromised! it’s what you’re proud of! maybe a slight color change as the times change, but basically DOES NOT CHANGE. honor a promotion with a nice, classy, well placed patch & a pre-game and in-game thing. i’m MORE than fine with that. but when you change a whole wordmark on a whole jersey, then it just seems like laundry…
thats why it’s so frustrating to me when teams change for what seems like just the sake of changing. like the blue jays, the diamond backs, the rangers, the yankees (kidding), even the astros.
stick to your guns for pete’s sake. own your identity, and own it with a bit of an edge. defend the damn thing… but most importantly, don’t go changing it every once in a while. lol.

Date-specific info on the AFL uniforms:
NEW YORK — The NFL will stage 16 games this season to honor the American Football League, which turns 50 in 2010.
In announcing the 16 matchups Tuesday, the NFL said the eight original AFL teams will wear historic uniforms.
Eleven legacy games will be matchups among those original AFL teams: Buffalo; New England; San Diego; Denver; Oakland; Tennessee; Kansas City; and the New York Jets.
The Chargers actually began life in Los Angeles in 1960, while the Titans were the Houston Oilers and the Chiefs were the Dallas Texans. The Jets were known as the New York Titans back then.
The first legacy game is during the preseason, when Buffalo plays Tennessee in the Hall of Fame game Aug. 8 in Canton, Ohio.
On the first Monday night of the regular season, a doubleheader will feature Buffalo at New England, followed by San Diego at Oakland.
On Sept. 27, the current Titans are at the former Titans: Tennessee at the Jets.
On Oct. 11, New England is at Denver, while the following weekend has Tennessee at New England on Oct. 18, and Denver at San Diego on Oct. 19.
San Diego visits Kansas City on Oct. 25 in another legacy game, followed by the Jets at the Raiders.
Buffalo is at Tennessee and Kansas City at Oakland on Nov. 15.
Another legacy game has the Dallas Cowboys, wearing their jerseys from 1960 to 1962, at Kansas City on Oct. 11. The Texans and Cowboys shared the Cotton Bowl from 1960 to ‘62 before the Texans moved to Kansas City to become the Chiefs.
On Nov. 1, the Miami Dolphins, who joined the AFL as an expansion team in 1966, visit the Jets. On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, Oakland visits the Cowboys. Three days later, Miami is at Buffalo.
On Dec. 8, the final legacy game has New England at Miami.
Game-worn jerseys and signed memorabilia will be auctioned off throughout the season, with money raised going to the NFL Player Care Foundation.
The AFL began in 1960 and lasted through 1969, when a merger with the NFL became official. The two leagues began playing championship games in the 1966 season, although the title game was not called the Super Bowl until the 1969 match between the Jets and Baltimore Colts.

If you go to ESPN Deportes’ MLB page, they list every team by their Spanish nickname. Is it safe to assume that these are the accepted nicknames in the Latino community? If so, I would think those would be what should go on the jerseys, though apparently the Vigilantes (or Los Rangers, if you prefer) thought differently.

I recall some organization or movement to let every country decide what they’re going to be called and then everyone sticks with that.
So, for example, English speaking people would use Deutschland instead of Germany. (Germania is something we can blame on the Romans who probably got the idea from the Gauls.) Anyone remember what that movement is called?

Would Jacobs Field qualify for a shirt?
It was given that name because the old owner paid for the naming rights, which expired and were sold to Progressive. Are the shirts based on objections to naming rights or just to corporate names?
#104 by Jeff on 05.05.09 12:13 pm |
This can apply to facilities that were renamed (”I’m Calling It Skydome,” for example) or new corporate-named facilities that replaced non-corporate ones (”I’m Calling It Shea” falls into this category, and so would, say, “I’m Calling It Candlestick” or “I’m Calling It the Vet”).
Nobody ever considered calling AT&T Park (originally, Pacific Bell Park) ‘Candlestick.’ Not even in a slang/affectionate sense the way it seems Mets fans want to refer to their new park.
Pacific Bell Park (or even Pac Bell Park) rolled nicely off the tongue, and the corporate name seemed so ‘right’ in this case.
I’m sure you’d find many Giants fans in the market for a “I’m calling it Pacific Bell Park” shirt.

Squiddie- I prefer Negra Modelo for a Vienna lager (well, I really prefer Schell’s FireBrick, but I’m staying on the topic of Mexican beers). And perhaps it’s already been said and I just missed it in the comments above, but there’s one reason and one reason only that these teams do the Latino night in the first place: marketing $$$. You know how many meatheads here on the South Side of Chicago buy green Sox crap? And when a team makes a “Latino” jersey, it’s just one more thing to sell and another way to attract a large ethic customer base that’s generally underrepresented. It has nothing to do with honoring or respecting anybody and everything to do with parting fans from their money.

ricko, i see where you are coming from, but ultimately this has little if anything to do with political correctness or kowtowing to minorities and everything to do with marketing to potentially untapped demographics and making money, like the Manny Pacquiao-SF Giants promotion. I think it’s gotten to the point of gastly obscene, especially with those MLB Stars & Stripes gear, which looks like absolute ASS. It’s too much, it’s not fun, it’s all over-blown, and it’s all for the sake of generating revenue. And when you see teams wearing & selling caps with stadium logos on it, then you know things have gone too far. And yeah, I was pissed when they added MLB logos on the back of caps. Doesn’t need to be there, and it gave them another reason to charge another dollar for a fitted cap (which back in 1993, $21).

I recall some organization or movement to let every country decide what they’re going to be called and then everyone sticks with that.
I like this idea, not least because people would have to become proficient in all kinds of sounds that their own language doesn’t have.
Learning the nasal A in “France” or the o-umlaut in “Österreich” is pretty easy for most Westerners, but I’d love to see people learn to say the African click sounds in “!Kung” or even the Hungarian “gy” in “Magyar”.
And regarding “THE Cerveceros” — that would be much, much more pathetic than “Los Mets”. “Cerveceros” is an easily-translated word, whereas the Mets presumably struggled with a good Spanish translation for “Mets”.

I’m still calling it Weeghman Park….because isnt Wrigley Field a corporate sponsor name? Haha!
Actually, if you want to get technical about it, William Wrigley Jr. renamed the stadium Wrigley Field in honor of his father, William Wrigley Sr. As such, it’s more analogous to Shibe Park or (to use a more recent example) Jacobs Field than it is to Citi Field or U.S. Cellular Field.

Phil,
The race was expected to be close, but in the end it was a runaway with Lebron garnering almost all of the first place votes and double the “points” compared to Kobe.
Also many people felt that it was a forgone conclusion that he would win the MVP as the season came to an end in March and April.

A note about Paulie’s Piratas jersey: it happens to fix what I see as a problem with the new sleeved Pirate look. They stuck with the same thin font that they used with the vests instead of going back to the heavier wordmark that they used on all the sleeved jerseys during the Three Rivers years. Paulie’s work uses a thicker font, which looks much better.

Doesn’t take a ton of effort to remove an embroidered logo if you have access to both sides like you do on a cap. Just cut with a pocketknife on the back, and pull from the front and vise versa. I’ve done it, took me about half an hour to remove the new era flag from the side of my fitted minor league hat. Looks like there was never anything there.
Just do it while watching tv.

I think it would be cool if No Mas could do a tee on the TD Banknorth Garden, with something like “I’m Calling it the Gahden” with the New England accent emphasized. I hope that the “I’m Calling it…” tee templates aren’t just held to baseball stadium cause that tee would be sweet.

I also have read in a number of baseball history accounts that Bill Veeck wanted to move the Saint Louis Browns to Los Angeles around 1946 and that he had pressed to sign Negro League players well before the Dodgers, but the then – comissioner and league owners blocked him on both attempts.
That was about the same time, in the early 1950s. He considered it as well as Milwaukee.
Bill Veeck didn’t own the Browns in 1946 – he owned the Indians. And they didn’t need to move anywhere.
I stand corrected. Still interesting though, I am off a bunch of years. Amazing guy, that Bill Veeck.
Innovative, heroic, ahead of his time. he couldn’t have been too much of a selfish guy to have owned and sold THREE different AL teams in the couse of 35-40 years. If he was that much of a money-grubber he would never have gotten away from his first or second team.
Where are the owners like him today? There are none. An innovative, heroic, ahead of his time owner today is probably in a board meeting trying to figure out a way to sell PSL’s for the men’s toilets.
#280 by Chance Michaels on 05.05.09 9:19 pm |
Well, to be fair, he made a hefty profit on all the teams he sold (with the possible exception of the Browns, which he was forced by the AL to sell).
There is a Bill Veeck figure in sports today – Mark Cuban. Although I find Cuban more of a self-promoter than Veeck, who was more than happy to sell himself in order to sell his product.

Re: NOBs for Stacy and Shawn Andrews
It would be neat to see ST. and SH. on their NOBs, but I don’t think it will happen. If it did, though, it wouldn’t be the first time – Stepfret Williams and Sherman Williams (no relation) were teammates with the Dallas Cowboys from 1996 to 1998, and their NOBs were ST. WILLIAMS and SH. WILLIAMS.

And even if you were doing the “reflecting the dominant minority language” thing in Toronto… well, Spanish would be behind Mandarin, Cantonese, Italian, Hindi, and more than a few others even past French. The Jays would be dragged over the coals by half the city if they decided to celebrate Mexican heritage before any of the far-more-populous groups in the city.
Of course, MLB often doesn’t quite figure out how to differentiate promotions for the Jays (THEY SHOULD WEAR ROYALS JERSEYS FOR JACKIE ROBINSON DAY, DAMMIT!), so it wouldn’t shock me if they screwed this up, as well.
