By Les Holmlund
Way back around 1971, when I was a young lad of 14, I read about Detroit Red Wings trainer Lefty Wilson and others creating face-formed masks for NHL goalies. The process involved smearing Vaseline on the goalie’s face, inserting breathing straws, and layering a slab of plaster of Paris directly onto the face. After it set, the plaster was removed to harden, and then this negative form was filled with more plaster, creating a positive mold. Fibreglass was layered over this, and after some cutting, drilling, and painting, a mask was born.
I got my Dad to help by putting the plaster on my face, much to my Mom’s horror. What my research didn’t tell me was that the darn plaster gets hot as it sets! Also, no amount of Vaseline could prevent some unintended eyelash removal when the plaster was removed.
My first try was a small mask I used for a few games at the end of my last season of bantam hockey (14 years old). As you can see, there’s not much there — safety standards were obviously lower back then, and somehow they let me wear this on the ice. I knew, however, that I could do better.
The next summer I came up with this, based on the masks produced by Jacques Plante’s company, Fibrosport. Jacques wore this style, as did Bernie Parent and others. I used this for half a season while I worked on the next mask.
Mask number three was patterned after masks made by Ernie Higgins. NHL wearers of Higgins’ work included Ed Johnston and Gerry Desjardins. I cut the chin too short, so it was back to the drawing board.
This was the last homemade mask I made. It was as good as I could do, and I wore it for a number of years from age 16 to about 20. It still has the awesome 1973 paint job I applied to (sort of) match the Islanders-based uniforms my team wore. Here is how these four DIY efforts now spend their days, on the wall of the ManPit.
After discovering punk rock, I retired for a few years, and when I returned, went to a Jofa helmet/cage combination. I still play hockey, and am still using a Jofa, but this one is a rare helmet/cage/mask hybrid, which I like a lot.
I sometimes think about trying to design a new kind of mask, and building it from scratch, but the current popular design seems pretty hard to improve upon.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Paul here. Speaking of masks, I was sitting around Uni Watch HQ yesterday, and of course I was wearing my official white surgical mask, what with the pig anthrax or the cat scurvy or whatever the hell it is that the the president’s trying to poison us with. And I suddenly got this feeling of deja vu, which I initially attributed to the goat rickets, but then I realized I was having a flashback to this photo, which originally ran in the Ticker in the fall of 2007. It shows a batter, catcher, and ump all wearing surgical masks during the famous muskrat fever outbreak of 1918. Isn’t it amazing that a public health emergency can’t stop baseball, but a little bit of rain can? … An MLS ref who accepted a jersey from a player has been reprimanded (with thanks to Jason Hillyer). … New uni numbers for the Iggles, Panthers, Rams, and Bears. … Meanwhile, the Pats presented their top draft pick and dressed him up in a Pat Patriot cap. … Cycling news from Sean Clancy, who writes: “Because of weird pro cycling rules that aren’t worth getting into, Astana team members Lance Armstrong (front), Levi Leipheimer (second), and Chris Horner are racing the Tour of the Gila in New Mexico wearing a kit from Armstrong’s Mellow Johnny’s bike shop.” … A little birdie passed along something interesting: MLB’s “Opening Day/Week/Series” style guide. … Latest catcher to wear a front-facing brim: Robinzon Diaz of the Pirates (with thanks to Doug Keklak). … Totally forgot to link to last Sunday’s article about Nyjer Morgan’s stirrups. Too bad about the word “hoses” in the lede graf, though — ugh. … Faaaascinating site here devoted to women wearing military uniforms (with thanks to my buddy Shane Arbogast). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: A-Rod went double-flapped in yesterday’s rehab game. … Dig the subscript NOBs on the 1980-81 KC Kings. … Second item on this page shows just how low the Lions have sunk. … Cincinnati has a bunch of amusing new nerd-ish vigilante crackpots uniformed crime-fighters (with thanks to David Sonny). … Latest genius move by the Wilpons: The “Bottled Beer” vendors at Shea are selling canned beer (as spotted by Mat Orefice). … A bunch of NYC police uniforms were seized in a raid. … This week’s New Yorker points out that if Texas makes good on Gov. Rick Perry’s “threat” to secede (highly unlikely yet oh so tantalizing), there’d be a nice side benefit: The Cowboys would no longer be able to call themselves America’s Team. … Rugby note from Caleb Borchers, who writes: “After much political wrangling, the South Africans finally have a new jersey. The traditionalists have ‘lost,’ in that the new jersey has moved the Springbok and the Protea flower is in its place. Given what the old design looked like, this really has been a lot of debate about nothing.” … Hey look, it’s a bunch of stupidly dressed golfers (as forwarded by Johnny Flanagan). … Go to this page and scroll down to “Rosenfels’ new number” to learn about, um, Rosenfels’s new number (with thanks to Jeff Barak). … Awesome home movie footage of a 1929 hockey game here (with thanks to Alan Kreit). … Taylor Looney says this guy was standing in front of him at a store in Midland, Texas. From the front, he says, it was a perfectly normal Tony Romo jersey. Was the back a manufacturer’s defect, or is this some sort of new “edgy” design trend we can all look forward to hating in the weeks and months to come? … Remember this? I don’t, thankfully, but it’s apparently what the Minnesota football team wore in 1994. “For me, it’s a case of ’so bad it’s good,’” says Tris Wykes. … With Triple Crown season upon us, Jeremy Brahm found some good blinker designs. Here’s a Hello Kitty-themed example, and I like this simple strawberry logo. … Happy May Day to the seven or eight of you who still have jobs. Enjoy the Derby, Hatton vs. Pacquiao, and whatever else you’ve got planned for the weekend.

The new Chelsea kit is out and for the second straight year, Adidas is saying what kind of downgrade they can give them. To me, it looks like sombody tried to make a shirt designed after a human rib cage, but with only an inkling of what that would look like.

Does premium beer have a different definition in NY. I would think that it would be more expensive than just plain beer, but according to the beer vendor sign it is a dollar less. What is up with that?

I have to admit, I love it when you look at something like those and you just get these full body cringe going on that lets you know you REALLY don’t like that! I get that with the Bills regular uniforms everytime I see them.
Those homemade goalie masks look a lot better than the ones I used to make out of discarded beer cases and a bike helmet to play backyard hocket and left me looking like a Beer Gladiator. No pics unfortunately./?

I’m checking out that list of new jersey numbers for the Bears, and I notice new acquisition Will Ta’ufo’ou.
If his family is Polynesian (he himself was born in California), I imagine that those apostrophes (representing glottal stops; called ‘okina in Hawaiian and by other names in other languages) should be facing in another direction. It’ll be interesting to see if the Bears get it right on his jersey. Is he the first player with two such distinctive letters?

You know what is funnier to me than the Mess selling cans of beer from a counter called “Bottled Beer”? It is the fact that with the prices in the photo, they actually have the calorie content before the price. Like someone (Silly enough) who is going to buy a $7.50 beer is going to care how much f*cking calories there are in it? Oh yeah, and I forgot that bottled water has 0 calories. Nice look yard that Citi Field is, but typical Mets…stupid is as stupid does…

Seeing the Nordiques jersey hanging in Les Holmlund’s “Manpit” was timely. Just yesterday I was thinking about the Nordiques, remembering my days with the early WHA, how I was hoping the Quebec Nordiques would come up with a jersey with a huge “Q” in the crest. Would have been unique in pro sports.
So, Teebz (or anyone), have there ever been any great “Q” jerseys? Or hats, even (saw that Ebbets Field Quebec City Alouettes baseball jersey and wondered what their hats looked like)?

I feel comfortable saying that the Romo jersey is a printing error. You can tell because if you folded the jersey, the number would match up. If does have a ton of “over-spray” on it, which tends to indicate that the screen had ink on the bottom, which is just sloppy.
Anyway, I used to have tons of misprint / alignment “Hoop it Up” T’s from my time printing those for Nike. You would think, given corporate attitudes about “besmirching” the brand by letting those go, that these would all be destroyed, but in my experience the printers steal them out of the “rag” box to wear while printing.
I wouldn’t wear them in public though
(lack of printed nameplate also indicates manufacturer error)

They are keeping the Flames name from what I’ve heard. Calgary owns the franchise, and, like the NJ Devils, have branded everything under their professional hockey business as the Flames.
Manitoba is their closest team at this point, and that’s a 14-hour drive away. Honestly, though, the Flames need to pick a city and stay with it. It’s the only way to build a fanbase.
Omaha, then Quad City, and now Abbotsford all in the span of the last six years. Granted, their biggest complaint was distance between the AHL and NHL franchises, but it seems that Iowa and Anaheim do just fine being that far apart.

That’s correct. Dallas had an agreement with the Moose that they would send their top prospects to Manitoba. Manitoba demanded the best in giving up the roster spots, and Dallas gave in to that demand.
Personally, I’m ok with the Texas Stars’ location. The AHL needs to slowly move west and build through the midwest to keep teams like Manitoba and San Antonio viable.
As for Los Angeles, Manchester is a very good AHL town so that’s stability and fanbase right there. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. :o)

I think the people who own the Abbottsford franchise, have agreed to subsidize the travel costs of the visiting teams. If I had a few million and wanted a hockey franchise, I would go the junior rank long before going the AHL route.
Small side point – and I apologize to whoever I got into this discussion last week with. It concerns the skin color of the Blackhawks logo as it appears on the jersey. I thought it was more brown in tone, and the other reader indicated it’s more gold. Ever since them, I’ve noticed it seems to depend on the lighting. Definitely there are pictures where it’s gold, but on the front page of Cnnsi’s hockey page, that looks brown to me.

Here is the proper way to pronounce Quincy, according to the Quincy, MA city website:
http://ci.quincy.ma....
“Why We Pronounce it ‘Quin-zee’
Why do we pronounce Quincy ‘Quin-zee’ when just about everyone else in the country refers to it as ‘Quin-see’? There are 19
other Quincys in the U.S. but they pronounce it ‘Quin-see’. Can they be right and we be wrong?
Not according to Quincy’s late city historian, William C. Edwards who never budged an inch whenever the argument ever came
up. And it still comes up.
The reason we pronounce it ‘Quin-zee’ is very simple.
The original Quincy family which settled here at Mount Wollaston pronounced it ‘Quin-zee’, including Col. John Quincy after
whom Quincy, Mass. – the first Quincy – was named in 1792.
Colonel Quincy was the great grandfather of sixth President John Quincy Adams.
Apparently, all 19 other Quincys in the U.S. were named after John Quincy Adams. And, apparently the early settlers of those
communities thought John Quincy pronounced it John ‘Quin-see’.
Anyway, that is how Edwards explained it. Seems like a sound argument.”

I actually liked the 1994 Apex Gophers jerseys as well as the unique Iowa hawkeyes Apex jerseys of that era.
The jerseys were a bit overdone and over -ornamentalized, I mean, do you REALLY need the two “M”s when you already have the “M”s on the Helmet? Do you really need the HAWKEYES wording on the chest when you already have WINGS on the shoulders and Hawkeyes’ heads on the helmet?
That said, I liked them, they were unique and broke with the Blah Penn State wannabee unis the Gophers have worn for some time, and who really can’t say that Iowa shouldn’t have its owen identity and not wear Terry Bradshaw’s Steelers rip-offs?
Now, if Iowa or Minnesota fans want to tell me to jumo in the lake over this, I will take my medicine because I do not live in either place. but as a uniwatcher, I declare that those Apex unis are in total better than what I see those teams wearing today – and I stand by that.

“that Iowa shouldn’t have its owen identity and not wear Terry Bradshaw’s Steelers rip-offs?”
I am not now—and never will be—an apologist for the University of Iowa. I just think something should be clear, or the record. Iowa did not “rip off” the Steelers in the truest sense of the phrase. When Hayden Fry arrived the program was in disarray. He said, “I want them to dress like winners,” and thus adopted the unis of the then-dynastic Steelers, a team that used the same colors as the Hawkeyes and had a record of success well worth emulating.
Everything was out in the open, and intended as a compliment. Never was there any attempt to be anything but open about it. They most certainly used the look, but they didn’t “steal” it, or claim it was original to them or of their own creation.
Just the opposite.

That being said, Nick, I liked those “feathered” Iowa jerseys. Back then I remembered thinking it was about time they had something truly their own.

#155 by pflava on 05.01.09 4:58 pm |
With the state of football “sleeves”, now would be a good time for Iowa to finally drop the Steelers jersey striping. The best bet would probably be to simply have no striping and slap the yellow hawkeye on the sleeve, keeping the white numbers. Nothing drastic. And maybe go with double black stripes on the pants.

I did not mean “steal” in the sense of theivery, more in the sense of copying.
I agreed at the time with Hayden Fry wanting to change the Hawkeyes’ direction and in doing so AT THAT TIME. It made sense at that time, and to the extent that unis affect the identity and ethos of a team, partcularly one on the rockks as were the Hawkeyes then, it was a “home run” of a move.
Nonetheleess, decades have passed and over the many years Iowa has played football it has worn many uniforms – some of them very nice and adaptable to the current equipment. I would prefer the university go in that direction.
I can also understand the fact that many Iowa fans have watched the Hawkeyes play in the “Steelers” template uni – they may have worn that football uni longer and more continuously than any other – and have witnessed many good seasons with the Hawkeyes in that uni. In that respect, that uni IS the Hawkeyes football identity. Further, the “Steelers” template unis are infinitely better than the ones adopted after the Apex unis were jettisoned.
I can understand both approaches, and I simply prefer college teams having their own identity. The Apex unis, however garish, were a step in that direction, and with a small bit of tweeking of the Apex uni – ridding it of the “Hawkeyes” wording and hawk head on front of the jersey, perhaps fixing the half-stripe on the pants – would have been a wonderful college uniform allowing a unique, sensible identity for that team.

Why not leave the Hawkeye head on the helmet, and instead of sleeve stripes use the horizontal “Apex Feather” of that jersey? No need for Hawkeye head redundancy.
Then Iowa would have a unique, sensible, TOPICAL (team mascot IOD with the jersey) uniform that would be “it’s own” as well as one that that works with the elimination of jersey sleeves that we are currently living through.

Speaking of Calgary/Atlanta Flames teams and logos.
I always thought that the Atlanta Flames “Motion A” was among the very best team logos EVER designed.
Equal mix of Team City (Atlanta) and Team Logo (Flames) in a sharp, readable, identifiable mark. The perfect, simple, sensible ID. PERFECT.
Too bad it was gone with hockey’s move from Atlanta.
