Requiem for Ol’ Griz: Yesterday’s entry featuring Ned Paynter’s comics generated a ton of favorable response, including the following note from Ned’s nephew Bruce Jaynes:
Thank you so much for your treatment of my uncle’s illustrations. You did an amazing job of capturing the spirit of his work. … The best part of the day, and I don’t want to get all mushy here, has been the reaction within my family. My uncle, as talented as he was, could be a real motherfucker. A little would go a long way. His final year was spent in pain, anger, and a dementia that too frequently brought us to our boiling point. When he passed, it was certainly a relief for everyone involved, and we haven’t really had a proper mourning period for him. My family has been sending emails and messages all day celebrating the recognition of Ned’s work. So consider today’s post as the wake that the Ol’ Griz never had. Thanks again.

It seems that Syracuse (and a number of other major D-I basketball teams) change uni’s almost every year. It’s got to be relatively cheap, with the relatively low number of players on a squad.

That Andruw Jones logo is just bizarre. Somebody obviously took the Brewers’ BnG and swapped out the baseball for his number.
The “m” and “b” don’t make any sense for Jones, and the logo doesn’t really work divorced from the letters, being a three-fingered glove.
Strange. Not only did whatever company he endorses not create him a logo, but he can’t afford to pay a graphic designer to make him one?

As far as the low receiver numbers go, I was with you all at first; I absolutely hated seeing receivers with teen numbers. I think it’s started to grow on me, though. I can see the utility of it though, as teams routinely have more than ten receivers + tight ends.

Adding to the list of mistakes in today’s ESPN Page 2, I saw that Matthew Stafford is now going to be playing for the Jaguars? Anyone catch the Tribe-BoSox game last night? Kelly Shoppach of Cleveland hit a home run to rightfield at “The Jake,” and some guy in a Boston Bruins jersey caught it. But the best part was that his friend, seated right next to him, had a Whalers jersey on.

yet i somehow like my hockey defensemen to have single digit numbers and my forwards to have teens and 20’s. i also like infielders to have single digits too. always loved joe crede when he played at u.s. comiskular, but 27 doesn’t look right to me. funny how i am okay with a 42 quartering back, but insist on a number 5 third sacker.

The stadium the Baltimore baseball franchise plays in is Oriole Park at Camden Yards, but everyone just calls it Camden Yards. So I’m all in favor of the fans choosing their own stadium names especially in these days of corporate naming rights.
I’m still trying to convince people to call the new Twins stadium Nicollet Park instead of the Target Field. It’s really a few blocks from Nicollet Avenue, but that shouldn’t matter.
I’m just worried that everyone is going to call it Stinky because of its proximity to the garbage incinerator.

I happened to come across a AAA baseball game between Fresno (Giants AAA) and Portland (Padres AAA) on Fox College Sports the other night and I notices that Portland wears Nike uniforms.
I wonder if this is a sign of things to come for MLB once the Majestic contract is up. To my knowledge this is the first time Nike has made uniforms for pro baseball teams. They have done the undershirts for MLB for many years.

Looking at those Texarkana JC baseball uniforms, I am struck with one thought… Am I the only one who HATES this flat brimmed look on the caps that all these younger players seem to be into? When I was a kid, you worked for days on end to get the right bend in the bill and distress in the cap. Rubber bands and dishwashers come to mind!
