Quite a few of you have been sending me notes saying, more or less, “What’s with all the attention to Josh Outman and Corey Wimberly? Where’s the love for Brendan Ryan? His stirrups are striped, y’know!” Really? I hadn’t noticed!
As I’ve patiently explained to these people, I haven’t mentioned Ryan so much this season because (a) I’ve given him plenty of attention in past seasons, and (b) I wish he’d show more of his white sanitaries. But Mets announcers Gary Cohen and Ron Darling apparently had no such compunctions yesterday, as they used a Ryan at-bat in the bottom of the 7th as the launching point for a wide-ranging, often awkward discussion of lower-leg stylings. Here’s a transcript:
Ron Darling: This kid brings some nice energy to the ballclub, doesn’t he? Old-timer with those socks pulled up. I think those socks by the Cardinals have to be one of the best in baseball, don’t they?
Gary Cohen [apparently unaware of current uni specs in Boston]: Those and the Red Sox.
Darling [equally clueless]: Red Sox are good. Trying to think, who else..?
Cohen: Did you see, by the way, I was watching, uh, uh, I was watching part of the Yankees/Oakland game yesterday, and one of the kids for Oakland, I think it was Outman, was wearing the stirrups — the green with the gold? Oh my! It looked like a picture out of the ’60s!
Darling: That’s right. I, I, they’re great, because they have the sanitary socks for, I mean… Guys don’t wear it now. They more wear the kind of soccer kind of sock, which is all one color. You see Delgado has it on, Reyes have [sic] them on. But it is, I, I used to wear that, that green and gold, and it’s pretty funny. See look, they’re more like soccer socks now. Just one full sock that they wear under their uniform.
Cohen: Right, but generally, when guys wear stirrups, they’ve got white socks, white sanitary socks underneath the stirrups. But this is the gold sanitary sock under the green stirrup. I, I, I, I’ve never seen look. Not for a long time anyway.
Darling: I tell, I tell you the hardest thing about getting used to in going to Oakland was not only that, the gold sanitary sock, was the white shoe.
Cohen: Mmm, the white shoes, yeah. Well, you felt like Joe Namath.
Darling: Exac… [Chuckles so hard he can't complete the word.] By the way, when I was playing football, everyone had to get those Riddells that Joe Namath had.
Cohen: Joe Willie White Shoes. [Long pause; one can almost hear both men's brains recalibrating.] And then there was Billy White Shoes Johnson.
Darling [clearly relieved to have something to respond to]: There you go.
Cohen [wandering far off the reservation now]: Everyone wanted to spike the ball like Billy White Shoes Johnson.
Darling: You know what’s pretty funny is, is that, you know, the NFL has stopped all the, uh, uh celebrating, or tried to stop all the celebrating. I couldn’t wait for Billy White Shoes Johnson to score a touchdown.
Cohen: Well, that’s because it was unique. I think, you know, when it starts to become a little over the top, they had to rein it in.
Darling: You weren’t an Ickey Shuffle fan? [Chuckles heartily at this reference.]
Cohen: You know, but even that was cute at the time. But you know, when guys are retrieving cell phones from goalposts, it’s, y’know, it starts to get a little out of hand.
Darling: Signing the football?
Cohen: Yeah, exactly. [Both men snicker to themselves, very satisfied to have identified this cultural microtrend and established their superiority to it. A long pause ensues.]
Darling: My favorite, and I won’t remember his name, it’s too bad. He played for the Philadelphia Eagles, and he scored a touchdown, and he used the goalpost as a heavy bag. [Chuckles. Cohen chuckles back.] He just stood there and uppercutted the heavy bag. It was great.
Cohen: That’s great as long as you don’t break your hand. [Both men chuckle. Discussion moves on to other matters for about 70 seconds.]
Darling: I was given the name of the Eagle. It was Vai Sikahema.
Cohen [clearly nonplussed to be back on this topic]: Ah. I would’ve had trouble just pronouncing that name. [Darling laughs heartily. Discussion mercifully moves on to other topics.]
So the morals of the story are as follows: (1) Mets announcers are incapable of discussing uni-related matters without making fools of themselves. (2) Gary Cohen apparently never saw Barry Zito pitch while he was with the A’s. (3) Even in broadcaster discussions, Josh Outman’s stirrups get more attention than Brendan Ryan’s. Sorry St. Looie fans, but whaddaya gonna do.

In terms of associating colours with political parties, while the right wing in the US is given the red colour and left wing blue, in Canada its more or less the opposite, the more right wing party is given blue, the liberal party – red, and the NDP (workers party – orange). The red colour associated with the GOP I’ve always found ironic, as I link red it to communism/socialism.

I was reading this story about the New Mexico coach’s dislike for Stephen Strasburg’s “demeanor,” when I noticed the second photo in the story. The kid is covered in swooshes. I count six that are visible. There undoubtedly more on the glove and shoes that we can’t see from the photo.

I remember reading that Hull liked to tie his skates up before putting his hockey pants on, so Rawlings put a zippers on the inside of the legs. Thus started the trend of hockey players showing too much skin.

Boog Ryan’s hosiery includes real stirrups. The minor leaguers in Cardinals system wear knitted-in stirrup-design socks, but Ryan’s are the real deal. They just traded Brian Barton, the only other player I’ve seen recently who went high-cuffed.
No idea what was up with LaRue wearing away shin guards with a home chest protector.

Rookies. First off, training tape would be a helluva lot more comfortable.
Second, the pants-IN-shoes look isn’t “tight”. It’s really, really, really stupid.
Granted, the ankle-length-look started that way with guys like Jose Offerman and Jose Lind. But it’s like watching some city dude tuck his jeans into his Tony Lama’s and think he stylin’ like a sure ’nuff cowpoke…when he really just looks like a dork. So, almost by default, pants outside shoes looks better. If you gotta have one or the other.

If I may, the A’s are special because of their Gold sani’s, green stirups, and white shoes. Because of that combo, in my opinion Outman and Wimberly should not be praised because they are doing a diservice to the uni — they are showing too much green. If they want to be “traditionalist”, they should wear it the correct way as demonstrated below by Rickey, Reggie, and Rollie:

I love how back in 1995 the head coach said, “The uniform gives us an identity distinct from all others in the NFL” and 14 years later the new head coach is saying the same thing about the new uniforms. The original uniforms were definitely different, but the new ones are so easily forgettable. That is until someone gets blinded by those helmets.

Most people incorrectly think of themselves as red or blue… or talk about so-called Red States or Blue States.
I hold that it is far, far more accurate to think of a state (or each person) as a shade of purple. And yes, I do understand the irony of mentioning this on UniWatch!
Most people would be hard pressed to consider themselves as 100% red or 100% blue. Just like Yin and Yang, it cannot be, nor should it be. This is a far more accurate depiction of the USA:

I addressed that a little a while back. In context of their time, if you wore your stirrups as high as Outman and Wimberly, your pants were worn lower to meet them. Generally, the informal “rule of cool” (and not just for the A’s) was The Higher the Stirrup the Lower the Pants (and vice versa, because plenty of players still wore low stirrups…Bando, Tenace, Campaneris).

Those A’s uniforms are some of the all-time best. But I also like the current A’s uniforms. I’m a black-shoe guy, but for some reason the white shoes with the A’s work. Y’know, something that often seems to get overlooked in this discussion is the Revolutionary War angle. The “right wing” Redcoats were fighting to maintain the status quo whereas the “left wing” revolutionaries were clad in blue.

Article about Braves rookie Jordan Schafer toning down his look this season. He ditched his flashy red glove and wore collared shirts to the ballpark during spring training. The article also mentions that he and Matt Diaz use mouthguards when batting. Finally, Braves rookies are required to wear neckties on the road, not just a collared shirt and jacket.

I always wondered if that look (Royals could sort do the same thing with their unis) didn’t lead to the ankle length style, because the first player I noticed wearing his pants that long was Jose Lind…while he was with Kansas City.
Thought maybe players figured that apparent one long stripe from waist to shoetop looked cool…so they just had their pants tailored longer.

In regards to the red/blue issue, I’m not sure why but I think that red has been somehow tied into the gay movement for many years. Having worked at an amusemt park many, many years ago, every summer there would be an unofficial “gay day” where all gays would go and wear red. Red was always the color.

Most political movements seem to adopt a very vibrant colour. The one that comes to mind was the one in Ukraine a couple of years ago which adopted orange as its colour. Bright colours I guess is associated with passion.
Which also seems consistent with sports cars, which are often brightly coloured, at least in a disproportionate amount relative to the entire car population.
Considering sports team want their fans to be passionate, I wonder why more don’t adopt brighter colors. Saskatchewan Roughriders account for over 40% of all merchandise sales in the CFL – their predominant colour – bright green (not Seahawks neon green).

Just want to say that I’m very appreciative that the Jaguar chatter has continued into a day 3 and have not found it at all horse floggy: simply comforting and cathartic. I’m sure that as I’ve thumbed through years of books and various trading cards, I have observed significant erosion of design quality across teams and leagues, but between the Jags and the Lions, it seems an inflection point has been reached. As for the Jags, the sudden absence of gold and a de-emphasis of teal, these come off as botched USFL designs. Additionally, please awaken me when the use of thicker “piping” as a stripe accent stops.

My dad had a relatively successful baseball career, having spent most of it as a pitcher in the Pacific Coast League when it carried an “Unclassified” designation. The league was so designated because it was like a third major league before air travel shrank the country. Most of the team travel in those days was by train and the occasional bus.
He, like you and many of your readers, have been put off by the attire of today’s baseball players with the long pants and generally sloppy attire. I sent him a copy of the recent Wall Street Journal article on the return of stirrups and he relayed the following story to me.
In the early 1940’s, when he was playing for the Hollywood Stars, an outfielder for the San Francisco Seals by the name of Joe Brovia showed up for a game with long pants down to his shoe tops. The commissioner of the league, Clarence Rowland, was in attendance that day took one look at Brovia and called over the Seals’ manager, the great Lefty O’Doul. Rowland apparently said to Lefty, “You tell that guy to raise his pants and dress like a ballplayer or he is suspended until his does!” Joe immediately raised his pants.
Maybe Bud can take similar action? …Nah!

I looked it up. It was the immortal Rex Johnston. No, Ricko, he’s not a legend in Pittsburgh.
Thasssss him. Had no idea of his status in Pittsburgh. Thought maybe he’d be something of a somebody. I know I certainly can’t think of anyone who played both sports only for teams in the same city, esp. as late as 1964, which is when Johnston played for the Pirates.
There’s Dieon Sanders’ tenure in Atlanta, of course, but he played for several different teams in both sports.
At least people noticed Deion when he played. Johnston played 14 games for the ‘64 Pirates and 12 (with all of 4 carries) for the 1960 Steelers, so he wouldn’t be remembered as more than the answer to a trivia question.
No subsequent player leaps to mind. For fun, I’ll mention Gene Conley, who pitched for the Braves and Red Sox (and a couple of other teams), as well as playing for the Celtics.

now…granted, in the first two pics it’s impossible to tell if he has the high side in the back…but if you look at the height of the front (in the first pic) and the height of the back (in the second)…it’s obviously higher in the back — and in the third, where it’s clear he’s wearing them properly, the heights correspond nicely to the heights in the first two pics

MY CORRECTION/CLARIFICATION
REGARDING THE METS and THEIR WEARING BLACK
Yesterday I posted that upon my very first sighting og the Mets incorporating Black into their unis, and upon seeing the revolting sight of the mixture of Blacl/Blue/Orange and White, my first thought was that the Mets should DITCH THE BLUE on their alternate jerseys. That posting was meet with howls from longtime Mets fans, with proposals involving my banning for the mention of such blasphemy. I apologize for any insult to Mets loyalists that want the true, Blue identity of the Mets to return. I too share that desire. That said, I stand by my thoughts on the subject, and with this clarification perhaps you may begin to soften your opposition.
First, my original sighting involved not a Black Mets Jersey – which I believe needs to go away altogether – but the Mets wearing a regular home uni with wording, cap, numbers and EVERYTHING trimmed with both Black and Blue. My thoughts involved simply replacing the Blue of the regular home uni with alternate Black, thus creating a Black/Orange/White alternate uni, and saving us entirely from the four color monstrosity.
Second, insofar as the Black jersey, Black hat/Black helmet alternate is concerned, the ditching of any element can’t save that uni from being the beer league softball uni that it really is.
My comment on DITCHING THE BLUE solely involves my Black/Orange/White or Gray alternate proposal relative to a White or Gray jersey uniform, which is made for one reason only – to save us from the Black/Blue/Orange combo.
OBJECTIVELY SPEAKING, and SEEING, which of the alternatives are worse, my Black/Orange/White or Gray alternate proposal that temporarily eliminates the Blue from the alternate,or the Black/Blue/Orange and White or Gray combo that currently plagues us?

RE: the Jags equipment room helmets-we used to trade other teams helmets or helmet stickers-depending on budget etc. But we would usually get a rejected helmet and put the decals on-even a few award/merit stickers. But we would just pick any mask-no one ever said hey I want an opo, jop, njop or anything. It was neat just to swap-I used to have a ton of other teams decals-we always put one on our cabinat which where we actually kept our decals-so it was covered!
Oh I was on NFL.com and I had others do the same-those logos do not do anything!

Oh, there’s been a number of two-sport athletes. My point was that Rex Johnston’s careers were extremely brief, that they were in the same town, and that they were the only teams he ever played with. That’s the quirkiness of it.

And that it happened as late as the 1960s. I imagine there may have been a number of such “game here, game there” stories from the 1920s through the ’40s during the earlier days of both baseball and pro football.

A while back, Paul linked to a guy who collects pocket schedules. Anyone recall that or how I can find him? I was going through archives at work and I found a pocket sked from 1977 for the Detroit Lions.

When you see a guy like Morgan from the front, it’s a heck of a lot more white than you normally see from a guy in stirrups. Therefore, it might look like they’re on backwards.

The A’s now have officially switched to all black batting helmets to go with their black alternate tops. They used to wear the regular green/gold helmets. Also, the team’s undershirts are black as well.
