At the recent Uni Watch gathering in Pittsburgh, George Fetkovich was kind enough to give me this book, which has a bunch of great photos. Let’s take a look:
• Remember my column about the pinned-on uni number panels in the 1934 MLB All-Star Game? Looks like the Pitt football team was doing something similar in 1908.
• Y.A. Tittle could have used this chest mark as his personal logo. No idea what it stands for, but I like it.
• Speaking of cool chest logos, look at this! Unfortunately, there’s no explanation of what the caption refers to as “their unusual jerseys.”
• Anyone wanna colorize this? I’m thinking royal with navy trim for the jerseys, and something mustard-ish for the shorts.
• Hey, fellas, why are you wearing bras? Never seen that pattern on a hoops jersey before.
• Never seen this one either. I really like it, though.
• Here’s an interesting football team portrait. Not sure why some players have the “A” jerseys and some just have stripes. Maybe one or the other was a practice jersey design..?
• There’s surprisingly little Pirates content in the book, but I was particularly fond of two shots: This one shows the awesome “P P” collar monogramming that I love so much, and this one shows another one of those heavy-knit baseball sweaters that I wish would make a comeback.
• Very odd football padding on this guy. Almost looks like he’s got tumorous growths coming out of his elbows and shoulders, no?
• Rough image quality, but I’m intrigued by this 1906 youth baseball shot. Note the “NE” script, for “New Eagle.”
• There’s no shortage of teams that have worn their team name or city name on their placket over the years (in fact, Phil devoted an entire entry to this phenomenon back in December). But until now, I’d never seen a team wear the first initial of its city along with its team name. Note that the little period in between the first two letters on each jersey — amazing.
• Sashes are so damn cool (especially when paired with striped socks).
• Although the caption simply refers to this as a “bowling” photo, the telltale small balls mean that these lanes are configured for either duckpins (which is found primarily in Baltimore and a little bit in New England) or candlepins (upper New England). I wasn’t aware of either game ever having a foothold in western Penna. — can anyone tell me more?

duckpins are played in western PA. I know there were a few lanes were I grew up in Johnstown and I’m pretty sure there is a presence in Pittsburgh too.

There are some duckpins lanes scattered about the Pittsburgh area, but usually just a few in a larger bowling center.

a student-athlete posted on pittblather this morning: a.d. steve pedersen is gonna meet with the athletes today and tell them that PITT is switching to nike. so everyone here please wish or pray or whatever it is you do to sway the uni gods that PITT has some say in the unis and makes them fairly laid back. i love modern jerseys but i feel like wrap-around stripes on PITT jerseys would look terrible. regardless, looks like the panthers will have new threads come august.

1) Rob Ullman did a 76ers throwback gal once. 2) We had duckpins down here in SE Virginia. There might be one place still open in Portsmouth, but the one I used to frequent in Norfolk has been shut down. It was a total 1950s throwback, down to the light fixtures.

To this Nike switch: is there any word if it’s simply them taking over or are they planning an overhaul of unis? For instance, there was little if no change when Adidas took over for Nike a few years back. I mean this in the first season. I realized the new PITT helmet and the change from PITTSBURGH to PANTHERS to PITT on the front of the jersey took place too.
Also, is this an all sports switch or just for football? I don’t think basketball has ever been Nike, even in the seasons the football team sported the swoosh.
I know my pipedream of script returning is slim and none, but I really hope they avoid some of these newfangled stripes, gussetts, piping, etc. Wannstedt seems like a guy that likes more tradition than modern stylings. I say this because when they wore the throwbacks a few years ago he was quoted as saying he loved the unis.

There is still duckpin bowling in Erie, PA. It’s mostly at an old german club called The Erie Maennerchor.

This was an all men’s club when I was a kid(wives of members were aloud for Sunday dinner) and my grand dad was on their duckpin team. We used to go play on Saturdays and listen to Indians games. I seem to remember him traveling to Ashtabula, OH and Oil City, PA for competitions.
Also, I still like the idea of a Kalas tribute sleeve patch that says “OOOOUUUTTA HEEEERRRRE!”

UNI WATCH HELP:
I posted this yesterday, and some have already helped, but I just want to mention it again. Please forgive me for this huge post, but I really need the help of the Uni Watch Faithful on this.
I have a rather awkward request. First some background information. I hail from a small college town called Stevens Point, WI. In 1969, in order to raise money for the local college radio station WWSP, the radio station came up with a trivia contest as a fundraiser. People in Stevens Point just call this event “Trivia”, and is also the World’s Largest Trivia Contest. There usually about 600-700 teams that play worldwide. There is always a theme every year for Trivia. This yeah it is “Trivia 40: Here’s Lookin’ At You Kid”, as a reference of Casablanca. Many times the theme has to deal with a famous actor who has recently passed away, or something relevant like in 1991 it was “Attack of the palindrome”. Teams can consist of as many players as the team wants. The contest is always sometime in April, and starts at 6pm on a Friday, and concludes at Midnight that following Sunday for 54 straight hours of Trivia. The format is simple. Eight questions per hour, and a few designated “speed rounds with twelve questions per hour. The DJ asks the trivia question, repeats it, plays a song (always oldies and classic rock) repeats the question again, plays another song, and then closes the question. So usually you have about 7 minutes to answer each question. Each team is given a “team ID” when they register. The team has to call a specific number that they are given to the WWSP phone bank, say their ID number, and give their guess for the question. You are not told if you are right or wrong. You have to wait for the question to be closed. If your team thinks that the answer given by the radio station is wrong, and the answer you found was correct, you must have two sources (none can be from the internet) and if you prove your case you will get the points. If a questions gets messed up, or read wrong, or there are multiple correct answers, or no team gets the question correct, then the question is worth zero points. Trivia has become known worldwide, and was even mentioned on Jay Leno a few years ago, a movie documentary was made called “Trivia Town”, it was the answer to a question on Jeopardy a few years ago, and Ken Jennings even mentioned it in his book. He was in Stevens Point a few years ago doing research. Here is an example of a question from a few years ago just for fun:
“Question 6 of hour 54: What is the first and last name of the professional baseball player whose signature is on the baseball bat used by Wendy Torrence in striking her husband Jack?”
That is all the DJ gives you. Your team has to figure out those characters, find out what movie or tv show is is from (this one is obviously from the 1980 movie THE SHINING) and either pop in the DVD and find out, or have the note already typed down in your database. The answer, if you didn’t know is Carl Yastrzemski. The scoring is parimutuel. All teams that respond correctly are given an equal share of the 2000 points that a question is worth, with a minimum of 5 points and a maximum of 500 points. The “Yaz” question was worth a measly 10 points because most people answered correctly.
My Trivia team is called “Festivus For the Rest of Us” and are comprised of my high school and college friends. We are all between the ages of 22-26. We take notes on everything throughout the year. Movies, TV shows, magazines, cartoons, commercials, print ads… anything is game for Trivia questions. I started this team with another friend of mine in 2001. We had always played Trivia just with some friends and never took it too seriously. It seemed impossible to answer most of the questions, and like most people in the contest, we used it as an excuse for a party or just to hang out for three days. Now, Trivia has become more like a reunion. There are some people that I only see during this one weekend every year. Last year, my team finished in 8th place. We were the youngest team since 1980 to make it into the top 10. (The radio station hands out trophies at an awards ceremony at 1am for the top 10 teams). My Trivia team is a close knit family, and we are all obsessed with this obsession that is Trivia. I take notes on something every single day. It is a huge part of my life.
Now… finally to my request. Aside from the normal 8 questions per hour. There are other ways to get points. There are “running questions”. The Running Questions are given at specific locations in Stevens Point at 7:00 A.M. both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Teams are asked to gather information within “running” distance of the meeting sight. It is basically a scavenger hunt. There are music snippets. The music questions are snippets of 8 songs. There are three music questions, and each of the snippets is equivalent to one question. These are very hard because the songs are about 3 seconds each, and kind of can run together. The final way to get point is through recognition of pictures from a booklet you get at registration called the New Trivia Times. There are 24 pictures with various sports figures, actors, musicians, products and advertisements. Being a young team, this visual trivia always gives us a bitch of a time. This is where I hope some of you can help. Teams are not allowed to post these images on the internet in a forum or anything like that… but they can e-mail, send out, or have as many people as they want look at the images. These images come out today at the first day of registration. The actual contest starts this Friday at 6PM and the New Trivia Times pictures are asked throughout the contest. Not only is that Citi Field Inaugural Season patch ugly, but it has this weird effect on the sleeves b/c it’s sewn on at an angle. It almost puffs out the right sleeve, while the “Mets” patch on the left sleeve does not. Maybe it’s because the cool-base material is flimsier.

A post on that blog did say they were going to announce an all sports switch. One thing there is that this might make it easier to get cap from the baseball team. Those are so hard to find, I know they’re out there, but still, I think Nike pushes those a lot more than other makers.

I wasn’t alive when he pitched, but it seems crazy that he was only 54, just seems like a billion years ago he was out on the mound talking to the ball. I remember seeing clips of that as a kid when I was in Little League. Seemed like a novel idea, so one day I was having a tough go of things on the mound, so I tried telling the ball what I needed it to do. I looked crazy AND got lit up. That was the end of that experiment.
Sad news, though, left a wife and a lot of friends behind. Seemed like a generally nice guy that settled nicely out of the limelight.

When they started this a few years back, it seemed as if there were no rules and you might have some teams with everyone, some teams with a few, etc. I was all for either ONE player on each team wearing 42, or EVERYONE in uniform wearing it. Many people mentioned that it would be impractical to have everyone wear the same number, so my vote was for the player with the most games on each team to wear it.
Obviously, if you favored the idea of having one person wear it you’d have to have them present the lineup cards: or at least shake hands at home plate or something along those lines.

Being a fan of the Fightin’s, even I think the Mets look terrible in black hats and jerseys. Team colors are blue and orange. Live with it. Same goes for all teams who think adding a black alternate is a good look when that color is not part of their scheme.(Yeah, yeah I know its for the mighty dollar. Just so tired of looking at them.)

I went to the last night game at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore with her. What a nice and cool lady and she really knows her baseball. She would not sign any autographs while the game was being played but obliged anybody who wanted one at all other times and even had her own sharpie to use to sign them.

Indianapolis has two active duckpin bowling centers, both in the same building. They’re in the Fountain Square building. Check out http://www.fountains... if you’re interested.
There used to be another duckpin alley about a mile north of there, next to Iaria’s, but it’s been closed for probably 5 or 7 years.
My dad also remembers duckpin bowling in Milwaukee back in the 50s, so it’s definitely not just a Baltimore/New England thing.

Anyone know if the Carolina Hurricanes have asked the NHL to let them wear black in the playoffs instead of their red home jerseys?
I ask because every ad I have seen on their site and on TV for the playoffs are with a player in the black jersey. Now, I know they did this a lot throughout the year, but they also did them with the red jersey. Seems like they’re subtly advertising the blacks will be worn without actually saying the blacks will be worn.
Anyone know for sure?

I spoke with the Phillies and Tigers today. The Tigers have no plans to wear a patch or armband for Mark Fidrych. Spokesguy said, “George Kell died last month and we’re not wearing anything for him, so I don’t expect we’ll do anything for Fidrych either.”
The Phillies haven’t yet settled on what, if anything, they’ll wear to memorialize Harry the K. The team has an off-day today, so they have a day to get their ducks in a row. I expect we’ll know their plans by this time tomorrow.

Has anyone noticed that the Phillies’ alternate caps (and now helmets) have been well received on this site, yet the Cubs have been praised here for ditching their road caps and helmets? Both rae blue with red brims.

Interestingly enough (getting back to the Citifield opening last night), Mr. Met came out for the pre-game FanFest activities dressed in pinstripes and blue cap (and some nifty oversize Puma shoes), leaving the Citi faithful with hope that the Mets would wear the proper uniform to open up the ballpark. Alas, he switched to the snow whites and blue/black cap for the game…

their decision to make the helmets match caps was just that…

just be grateful they didn’t try to make their helmet look like this

Most every team in every sport on every level has a white jersey, but that doesn’t make white a “team color.” Notre Dame’s colors aren’t blue, gold, and white. The San Francisco Giants’ colors aren’t black, orange and white. Unless the team only has one other primary color (the blue-and-white University of Kentucky and NY Yankees, for instance), the white is assumed as a neutral base or trim and not a “team color.” Unless the people in charge make it a point otherwise–which can be argued in the Mets’ case since they did, in fact, create an alternate logo in which black replaced the team color blue and not the benign white–black should be treated in the same manner.
Again, my beef with the Mets isn’t the use of black, but decade-long insistence that a uni they rarely actually wear is the official home outfit. Heck, I’d even be OK with the blue-brimmed black cap being worn full-time at home–even with the pinstripes–if they’d just wear blue sleeves/belts/socks along with it. That cap itself is fine as far as I’m concerned (the dark dome with a lighter brim combo actually has kind of a retro, this-is-what-we-would’ve-worn-in-the-’30s-if-the-team-existed-back-then feel to it), but there is no way around the fact that wearing black sleeves and socks with blue pinstripes is just plain FUG.

sorry if this has been said before, but i think the rangers are doing what they did back in 2000 – wearing the red caps and helmets at home and blue on the road. i must say that i like the red at home look, especially when paired with the blue jersey (i dont know if they have done that this year, but i know i liked it back in 2000)

I still say the Jays should all wear #9 instead of #42, if they’re not going to go all-out and wear Montreal Royals uniforms. It’d be a nice touch, since while Jackie didn’t have the societal impact he would in Brooklyn (for many reasons), his time with the Royals is still, IMHO, an important part of Canadian history.

Adding to comment #18, I played Boys Baseball for the Maennerchor Club in Erie, and at the end of every season, we would have our team party there. Our fathers would all get wasted and we would eat pizza and play duckpins. I believe the Maennerchor had six duck lanes and six standard bowling lanes (It could be 8). Randy Brewer, a body-builder turned radio personality and politico, was one of our coaches and he would roll the 16 lb. bowling ball with the same ferocity that we 12 year-olds could toss our 2 pound duck balls. Fond memories of that basement.
