At the recent Uni Watch gathering in Pittsburgh, George Fetkovich was kind enough to give me this book, which has a bunch of great photos. Let’s take a look:
• Remember my column about the pinned-on uni number panels in the 1934 MLB All-Star Game? Looks like the Pitt football team was doing something similar in 1908.
• Y.A. Tittle could have used this chest mark as his personal logo. No idea what it stands for, but I like it.
• Speaking of cool chest logos, look at this! Unfortunately, there’s no explanation of what the caption refers to as “their unusual jerseys.”
• Anyone wanna colorize this? I’m thinking royal with navy trim for the jerseys, and something mustard-ish for the shorts.
• Hey, fellas, why are you wearing bras? Never seen that pattern on a hoops jersey before.
• Never seen this one either. I really like it, though.
• Here’s an interesting football team portrait. Not sure why some players have the “A” jerseys and some just have stripes. Maybe one or the other was a practice jersey design..?
• There’s surprisingly little Pirates content in the book, but I was particularly fond of two shots: This one shows the awesome “P P” collar monogramming that I love so much, and this one shows another one of those heavy-knit baseball sweaters that I wish would make a comeback.
• Very odd football padding on this guy. Almost looks like he’s got tumorous growths coming out of his elbows and shoulders, no?
• Rough image quality, but I’m intrigued by this 1906 youth baseball shot. Note the “NE” script, for “New Eagle.”
• There’s no shortage of teams that have worn their team name or city name on their placket over the years (in fact, Phil devoted an entire entry to this phenomenon back in December). But until now, I’d never seen a team wear the first initial of its city along with its team name. Note that the little period in between the first two letters on each jersey — amazing.
• Sashes are so damn cool (especially when paired with striped socks).
• Although the caption simply refers to this as a “bowling” photo, the telltale small balls mean that these lanes are configured for either duckpins (which is found primarily in Baltimore and a little bit in New England) or candlepins (upper New England). I wasn’t aware of either game ever having a foothold in western Penna. — can anyone tell me more?
If you like what you see here, you can click through the entire book here. Thanks again, George.

Raffle Results: You were totally convinced that you were gonna win this time. And you were right — if your name is Curtis Pidhorney.
In case you were wondering: Yes, the Uni Watch Classifieds are still an ongoing concern. Later today we’ll add a permanent link to them They now have their own perma-link on the home page, and later today I’ll be adding a few more listings. I realize this project has been slow to develop, but we’re getting there — thank for your patience.
Uni Watch News Ticker: For those who missed it yesterday: The “I’m Calling It Shea” T-shirts are now available (here’s what the blue version looks like). And you can get a 10% discount if you use the checkout code “uniwatch” … Not sure, but I think this is Rob Ullman’s first NBA-themed treatment. … Jim Ransdell’s Sports Design Blog continues to impress. His latest winner: a post featuring lots of great circa-’74 basketball graphics. … Decent article on kinesio tape here. … Nice article here about how the Shea family is coping with the demise of Shea Stadium. … Current issue of ESPN Mag has this shot of Michael Crabtree, in which he’s wearing socks with the old NFL logo (current logo is on the cleats, though). There’s also this shot, which finds Crabtree wearing old-logo wristbands (with thanks to Chris Flinn). … Did you know frequent Ticker contributor Tris Wykes used to work for the Tampa Bay Bucs? I didn’t, until he sent me this note yesterday: “Back in 1993, while serving as an equipment assistant for the Buccaneers, we played a preseason game at Miami and I snapped this picture of my boss, Frank Pupello, and his Fins counterpart, who I believe was named Bobby Monica. We were told the aqua Dolphins helmet prototype you see on the shelf was going to be the team’s regular helmet for 1994. Apparently, that plan was scrapped.” … Don’t eat any yellow snow ice. Details here (with thanks to Brian Castile). … Angel Cabrera wears a special glove on his cigarette hand (with thanks to John Muir). … Ryan Howard, on the other hand, smokes bare-handed. … Tony Kellogg found some old football pics at an antique shop — he says they’re from the 1930s, but I think they’re earlier than that — that show the officials wearing white, which was common in the pre-zebra era. … Now the NHL postseason is starting, it’s time to grow a playoff beard (with thanks to James Huening). … Check out the “B” on Wes Unseld’s socks (with thanks to Dave Holland). … Steve Cook did some quick Photoshopping to show how the new Bosox alt cap logo would look with a white outline. Much better, sez I. … Who’da tunk Leo Sayer, of all people, had such good taste in hockey jerseys? (With thanks to Scott Stone.) … No photo, but I’m told that the Mariners have had an Ichiro jersey hanging in the dugout, which is odd for two reasons: (1) I thought Ichiro’s teammates hated him, and (2) since when is going on the DL cause for a hanging-jersey tribute? … Joan Jett, rocker ballplayer. Chris Falvey saw that photo on the wall of a New Orleans eatery. Not sure of the backstory. … Bryan Justman just finished his latest DIY project, a Guy LaFleur Nordiques jersey. … Lids for Yids (with thanks to Trevor Williams). … Teebz is running his annual NHL playoff pool over on his blog. Details here. … Who’s going to wear 42 tomorrow? Apparently everyone. … ANaGELS? … Oh dear (blame Dan O’Connor). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Michigan’s spring football game featured a QB wearing red uni numbers, presumably in place of a red no-contact jersey. … Pretty great uni-related Bruins commercial here (with thanks to Michael Blinn). … The Orioles debuted their new “Baltimore” road uniforms last night. Or is it “Balttimore”? And here’s a great spot by Tom Hedrick: Brian Roberts began the game with the wrong script on his right sleeve. Someone must have noticed, because it had been fixed by his second at-bat. … No photo, but here’s something I’d never seen before: At several points during last night’s Mets/Padres game, cameras caught San Diego outfielder Jody Gerut consulting a little crib sheet that he kept in his back pocket. Presumably had info on outfield positioning. … Also, in that same game, Mets batboy and Uni Watch membership enrollee Matt Harris christened the new Shea by wearing stirrups. Nicely done, Matt, but I also saw you untucking your jersey while you were still in the dugout after the last out was made. Save that until you’re back in the clubhouse! … Speaking of Shea’s inaugural game, a cat showed up on the field. John Okray got a video grab. … See that guy in the front row? That’s New York Governor David Paterson. He’s legally blind — and yet, as pointed out in last night’s comments, even he knew which Mets cap to wear last night, unlike the Mets themselves. … Last night I got an e-mail from one of my ESPN editors, Thomas Neumann, with the subject line “I’m assuming alcohol was involved.” The e-mail contained this link. … Pirates had their home opener yesterday and used the occasion to memorialize those three Pittsburgh police officers who were murdered by a gun-toting nut 10 days ago. The Bucs and ’Stros both wore Pittsburgh police caps during pregame ceremonies, and the Pirates kept wearing them during the game. They also added a “PBP” patch (for Pittsburgh Bureau of Police). … Speaking of the Pirates, I think someone mentioned this over the weekend, but it’s interesting that their collar piping extends all the way down the inner edge of the jersey. … Good spot by Brian Hunsicker, who notes that the “N” on the front of Wilfredo Ledezma’s jersey was upside-down yesterday. … Dave Gilmore hosts a weekly podcast on BaltimoreSportsReport.com, and this week his guest was Kevin Brotzman of Oriolesnumbers.com. “We talked about Uni Watch, Mets by the Numbers, a whole bunch of stuff,” says Dave. Check it out here.

There are some duckpins lanes scattered about the Pittsburgh area, but usually just a few in a larger bowling center.
Lucky Strike in West Nyack, NY has duckpins – anyone know if the one in midtown Manhattan does as well?

hey kek,
a student-athlete posted on pittblather this morning: a.d. steve pedersen is gonna meet with the athletes today and tell them that PITT is switching to nike. so everyone here please wish or pray or whatever it is you do to sway the uni gods that PITT has some say in the unis and makes them fairly laid back. i love modern jerseys but i feel like wrap-around stripes on PITT jerseys would look terrible. regardless, looks like the panthers will have new threads come august.

1) Rob Ullman did a 76ers throwback gal once. 2) We had duckpins down here in SE Virginia. There might be one place still open in Portsmouth, but the one I used to frequent in Norfolk has been shut down. It was a total 1950s throwback, down to the light fixtures.

First, thanks for posting the last night. Pitt Blather is one of the blogs I frequent, but rarely do I read comments there. I may have posted there ONCE.
To this Nike switch: is there any word if it’s simply them taking over or are they planning an overhaul of unis? For instance, there was little if no change when Adidas took over for Nike a few years back. I mean this in the first season. I realized the new PITT helmet and the change from PITTSBURGH to PANTHERS to PITT on the front of the jersey took place too.
Also, is this an all sports switch or just for football? I don’t think basketball has ever been Nike, even in the seasons the football team sported the swoosh.
I know my pipedream of script returning is slim and none, but I really hope they avoid some of these newfangled stripes, gussetts, piping, etc. Wannstedt seems like a guy that likes more tradition than modern stylings. I say this because when they wore the throwbacks a few years ago he was quoted as saying he loved the unis.

There is still duckpin bowling in Erie, PA. It’s mostly at an old german club called The Erie Maennerchor.
http://www.eriemaenn...
If you scroll to the bottom of the page, it appears you can still rent the bowling alley.
This was an all men’s club when I was a kid(wives of members were aloud for Sunday dinner) and my grand dad was on their duckpin team. We used to go play on Saturdays and listen to Indians games. I seem to remember him traveling to Ashtabula, OH and Oil City, PA for competitions.
Also, I still like the idea of a Kalas tribute sleeve patch that says “OOOOUUUTTA HEEEERRRRE!”

UNI WATCH HELP:
I posted this yesterday, and some have already helped, but I just want to mention it again. Please forgive me for this huge post, but I really need the help of the Uni Watch Faithful on this.
I have a rather awkward request. First some background information. I hail from a small college town called Stevens Point, WI. In 1969, in order to raise money for the local college radio station WWSP, the radio station came up with a trivia contest as a fundraiser. People in Stevens Point just call this event “Trivia”, and is also the World’s Largest Trivia Contest. There usually about 600-700 teams that play worldwide. There is always a theme every year for Trivia. This yeah it is “Trivia 40: Here’s Lookin’ At You Kid”, as a reference of Casablanca. Many times the theme has to deal with a famous actor who has recently passed away, or something relevant like in 1991 it was “Attack of the palindrome”. Teams can consist of as many players as the team wants. The contest is always sometime in April, and starts at 6pm on a Friday, and concludes at Midnight that following Sunday for 54 straight hours of Trivia. The format is simple. Eight questions per hour, and a few designated “speed rounds with twelve questions per hour. The DJ asks the trivia question, repeats it, plays a song (always oldies and classic rock) repeats the question again, plays another song, and then closes the question. So usually you have about 7 minutes to answer each question. Each team is given a “team ID” when they register. The team has to call a specific number that they are given to the WWSP phone bank, say their ID number, and give their guess for the question. You are not told if you are right or wrong. You have to wait for the question to be closed. If your team thinks that the answer given by the radio station is wrong, and the answer you found was correct, you must have two sources (none can be from the internet) and if you prove your case you will get the points. If a questions gets messed up, or read wrong, or there are multiple correct answers, or no team gets the question correct, then the question is worth zero points. Trivia has become known worldwide, and was even mentioned on Jay Leno a few years ago, a movie documentary was made called “Trivia Town”, it was the answer to a question on Jeopardy a few years ago, and Ken Jennings even mentioned it in his book. He was in Stevens Point a few years ago doing research. Here is an example of a question from a few years ago just for fun:
“Question 6 of hour 54: What is the first and last name of the professional baseball player whose signature is on the baseball bat used by Wendy Torrence in striking her husband Jack?”
That is all the DJ gives you. Your team has to figure out those characters, find out what movie or tv show is is from (this one is obviously from the 1980 movie THE SHINING) and either pop in the DVD and find out, or have the note already typed down in your database. The answer, if you didn’t know is Carl Yastrzemski. The scoring is parimutuel. All teams that respond correctly are given an equal share of the 2000 points that a question is worth, with a minimum of 5 points and a maximum of 500 points. The “Yaz” question was worth a measly 10 points because most people answered correctly.
My Trivia team is called “Festivus For the Rest of Us” and are comprised of my high school and college friends. We are all between the ages of 22-26. We take notes on everything throughout the year. Movies, TV shows, magazines, cartoons, commercials, print ads… anything is game for Trivia questions. I started this team with another friend of mine in 2001. We had always played Trivia just with some friends and never took it too seriously. It seemed impossible to answer most of the questions, and like most people in the contest, we used it as an excuse for a party or just to hang out for three days. Now, Trivia has become more like a reunion. There are some people that I only see during this one weekend every year. Last year, my team finished in 8th place. We were the youngest team since 1980 to make it into the top 10. (The radio station hands out trophies at an awards ceremony at 1am for the top 10 teams). My Trivia team is a close knit family, and we are all obsessed with this obsession that is Trivia. I take notes on something every single day. It is a huge part of my life.
Now… finally to my request. Aside from the normal 8 questions per hour. There are other ways to get points. There are “running questions”. The Running Questions are given at specific locations in Stevens Point at 7:00 A.M. both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Teams are asked to gather information within “running” distance of the meeting sight. It is basically a scavenger hunt. There are music snippets. The music questions are snippets of 8 songs. There are three music questions, and each of the snippets is equivalent to one question. These are very hard because the songs are about 3 seconds each, and kind of can run together. The final way to get point is through recognition of pictures from a booklet you get at registration called the New Trivia Times. There are 24 pictures with various sports figures, actors, musicians, products and advertisements. Being a young team, this visual trivia always gives us a bitch of a time. This is where I hope some of you can help. Teams are not allowed to post these images on the internet in a forum or anything like that… but they can e-mail, send out, or have as many people as they want look at the images. These images come out today at the first day of registration. The actual contest starts this Friday at 6PM and the New Trivia Times pictures are asked throughout the contest. If you are interested in taking a look at these pictures please contact me at:
jokray @ gleneringolf . com
I would think that people like Ricko, who is actually old enough to actually know the people in the images, (I kid cause I love) would know a lot of these pictures. If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it. My team would really appreciate it. Trivia is very important to me, and this would mean so much if you could help me out. If you want to know more about Trivia, here is their home page:

Not only is that Citi Field Inaugural Season patch ugly, but it has this weird effect on the sleeves b/c it’s sewn on at an angle. It almost puffs out the right sleeve, while the “Mets” patch on the left sleeve does not. Maybe it’s because the cool-base material is flimsier.

I wasn’t alive when he pitched, but it seems crazy that he was only 54, just seems like a billion years ago he was out on the mound talking to the ball. I remember seeing clips of that as a kid when I was in Little League. Seemed like a novel idea, so one day I was having a tough go of things on the mound, so I tried telling the ball what I needed it to do. I looked crazy AND got lit up. That was the end of that experiment.
Sad news, though, left a wife and a lot of friends behind. Seemed like a generally nice guy that settled nicely out of the limelight.

Because everyone in the off season in Seattle took to hammering on Ichiro as a prima donna, hanging his jersey up in the dugout is an attempt at showing team unity. I guess when you lose 100+ games last year, even your best player gets crapped on.

When they started this a few years back, it seemed as if there were no rules and you might have some teams with everyone, some teams with a few, etc. I was all for either ONE player on each team wearing 42, or EVERYONE in uniform wearing it. Many people mentioned that it would be impractical to have everyone wear the same number, so my vote was for the player with the most games on each team to wear it.
Obviously, if you favored the idea of having one person wear it you’d have to have them present the lineup cards: or at least shake hands at home plate or something along those lines.

according to people i’ve talked to, pedersen announced at 8am this morning to all athletes that nike will be taking over all athletic apparel and footwear. i feel like an official presser will follow either later today or sometime this week. i remember what you’re talking about with the lack of a uniform redesign when adidas took over for nike a while back. i don’t know if any information as to redesigns has been given or even decided upon. personally, I feel like they will not redesign football, but my feeling has no basis any anything anyone has said. it’s just a hunch. from what i understand basketball will be included, and i would fully expect to see pitt in SOD next season. again, that’s not based on anything i’ve heard. it’s just another hunch. maybe some of these questions will be answered when the official press conference happens.

Being a fan of the Fightin’s, even I think the Mets look terrible in black hats and jerseys. Team colors are blue and orange. Live with it. Same goes for all teams who think adding a black alternate is a good look when that color is not part of their scheme.(Yeah, yeah I know its for the mighty dollar. Just so tired of looking at them.)

Had they chosen black as a team color back in 1962, then I’d agree. But the inclusion, coming when it did, has the distinctive stink of a moneygrab.
Then again, they just slapped black accents on top of a pretty good uniform design, completely wrecking it. Design is a delicate balance, like making a cake. You can’t just dump a load of baking powder on top of a finished cake and call it an improvement.

Indianapolis has two active duckpin bowling centers, both in the same building. They’re in the Fountain Square building. Check out http://www.fountains... if you’re interested.
There used to be another duckpin alley about a mile north of there, next to Iaria’s, but it’s been closed for probably 5 or 7 years.
My dad also remembers duckpin bowling in Milwaukee back in the 50s, so it’s definitely not just a Baltimore/New England thing.

I ask because every ad I have seen on their site and on TV for the playoffs are with a player in the black jersey. Now, I know they did this a lot throughout the year, but they also did them with the red jersey. Seems like they’re subtly advertising the blacks will be worn without actually saying the blacks will be worn.

Beautiful park. The first thing we noticed when we got to our seats is how close every seat is to the field as opposed to Shea. Shea was a multi-purpose oval; Citifield is a dedicated ballpark and it feels like it. Concourse is about twice the width of Shea’s, so you can actually walk it with your arms sticking straight out and you won’t hit anyone.
Words really can’t do it justice. After all, when you’ve been going to the same dump for 30+ years and you visit a brand-spanking new stadium with all the amenities that newer stadiums have and the old one didn’t have, you can’t help but feel in awe of the new place. And I call Shea a “dump” lovingly, BTW :-)
My friend, who was at the game with me, has also visited Camden Yards and Pac Bell and says that Citifield is comparable to those two. His words, not mine.

So wait… let me get this straight…
Taxpayers give the money to the NY/US gov’t. The NY gov’t gives the Mets money to build the stadium, and the US gives $306 billion to Citi to bail them out of a potential bankruptcy. NY (State and City) subsidizes $450 million to build the stadium. Citi signs on for $400 million contract over 20 years to name the stadium. And in return? Tickets are more expensive than ever, yet the NY gov’t gets free front row passes to every game. Nice that the blind governor is able to catch a free game on the front row.
So, $850 million of our tax money goes to funding this stadium and team, and the only kickback is that the politicians get free seats. A blind man sits in the front row because the taxpayers gave the team $850 million. Gotta love America.

The Carolina Hurricanes have played the New Jersey Devils 3 times in the postseason. In 2001, the Devils won in 6 games and went on to win the Cup. In 2002, the Canes won in 6 games and went on to lose the Finals 4-1 to Detroit. In 2006, the Canes won in 5 and went on to win the Cup.

I don’t like the black, but in the pros if a team says it’s a team color, then it’s now a team color. It doesn’t matter what they’ve worn before. If they wear it now, it’s a team color. In college, the university has to change the school colors, which the teams happen to wear, for there to be an official change. Teams can still wear colors that are not official school colors (which isn’t always good — e.g., see Miami and Florida State in black — but could be good — e.g., see Notre Dame in green).
I’d say the Mets’ colors are now blue, orange, and black since they wear those uniforms. Have the Mets changed their official colors to blue, orange, and black?

Wow, I guess I thought it was more rare than that. Guess not. I guess I will take it one step further and ask if a team has participated in four, or even five openers at the start of a season. For some reason this intrigues me that a team could go through the bells and whistles of “opening day” about four or more times.

Yeah, I did actually notice that. It’s just one of those things like why cheese is delicious on Italian food but on Chinese food, it’s disgusting.
And while I’m not in favor of the Cubs bringing it back as a game cap under any circumstances, I’ll agree that it looks OK when paired with the t-ball jersey.

I think Rob Neyer put it well when he said MLB is trying to turn Robinson into a god. When Robinson was inducted into Cooperstown, he wanted his on-field accomplishments to be the focus of his plaque. Now the powers that be have gone and changed his plaque to cite his pioneering status. I think Jackie in some way would be upset with all of this attention.

Interestingly enough (getting back to the Citifield opening last night), Mr. Met came out for the pre-game FanFest activities dressed in pinstripes and blue cap (and some nifty oversize Puma shoes), leaving the Citi faithful with hope that the Mets would wear the proper uniform to open up the ballpark. Alas, he switched to the snow whites and blue/black cap for the game…

The Cubs have enough red in their road uniforms that the red brim cap made a lot of sense. Not sure why they ditched it; I sort of liked it.
The Phillies almost surely will be doing something on their uniforms for Kalas, right? I believe they wore a patch during the ‘07 season in memory of John Vukovich.

excellent analogy james
some caps (and by extension, helmets) look better with alternate uniforms (for example, the two toned cubs cap looks better with the alternate — doesn’t mean they should wear the
alternatesoftball jersey tho)…others do not…example phillies standard uni with blue helmet — you can see why that experiment lasted, what, 2 days?
one could argue the red lid might look better with the alternate uniform (which, it must be noted, is an actual, you know, UNIFORM, not a softball jersey), but they chose to go with the two tone (which i believe is a throwbackish look to begin with)
had the phillies chosen to wear softball tops, you can see how bad the red cap looks
their decision to make the helmets match caps was just that…
personally i like the solid helmet and solid cap versus the two tone, but if you’re going to have one type of cap (two-tone), you should at least have the helmet match
just be grateful they didn’t try to make their helmet look like this

There’s a red C on their current road cap. That works for me.
And in my opinion, there’s too much red on the road unis. I’m hoping the ditching of the red brims is a gradual phase-out of red as a featured color. I’d love to see them change everything to blue with red trim in place of the white-trimmed blue letters/red numbers.

I have every intention of entering the pool, but it’s a lot of work, so I don’t have a lot of confidence in myself to get everything done. It ain’t like an NCAA bracket where you just go with your gut instinct and let ’er rip.
It’ll probably be totally half-assed and look something like this:
Red Wings sweep – Game winners in all four: Zetterberg
Blackhawks win games 1, 3, 5 and 7. Game winners in all four: Toews
Flames win games 2,4 and 6 – Iginla with the game winners in all three
and so on…

A funny scene from the Rangers-Orioles game tonight.
The Rangers used to have a old-timey manual scoreboard in left field.
http://farm1.static....
This year they switched to one of those LED scoreboards
http://i33.photobuck...
Tonight there was a deep fly ball to the wall and David Murphy went up and grabbed it.
http://i33.photobuck...
Well, the LED board actually sits a foot or so behind a net.

Here’s what the catch looked like from a different angle:

That’s really a semantic argument. Personally, I think the dearth of black as a trim and alt-uni color is simply a replacement of white as an neutral base and accent color. The Mets’/As’/Royals’ black alts are pretty much just their everyday jerseys on a black base instead of white.
Most every team in every sport on every level has a white jersey, but that doesn’t make white a “team color.” Notre Dame’s colors aren’t blue, gold, and white. The San Francisco Giants’ colors aren’t black, orange and white. Unless the team only has one other primary color (the blue-and-white University of Kentucky and NY Yankees, for instance), the white is assumed as a neutral base or trim and not a “team color.” Unless the people in charge make it a point otherwise–which can be argued in the Mets’ case since they did, in fact, create an alternate logo in which black replaced the team color blue and not the benign white–black should be treated in the same manner.
Again, my beef with the Mets isn’t the use of black, but decade-long insistence that a uni they rarely actually wear is the official home outfit. Heck, I’d even be OK with the blue-brimmed black cap being worn full-time at home–even with the pinstripes–if they’d just wear blue sleeves/belts/socks along with it. That cap itself is fine as far as I’m concerned (the dark dome with a lighter brim combo actually has kind of a retro, this-is-what-we-would’ve-worn-in-the-’30s-if-the-team-existed-back-then feel to it), but there is no way around the fact that wearing black sleeves and socks with blue pinstripes is just plain FUG.

sorry if this has been said before, but i think the rangers are doing what they did back in 2000 – wearing the red caps and helmets at home and blue on the road. i must say that i like the red at home look, especially when paired with the blue jersey (i dont know if they have done that this year, but i know i liked it back in 2000)

I still say the Jays should all wear #9 instead of #42, if they’re not going to go all-out and wear Montreal Royals uniforms. It’d be a nice touch, since while Jackie didn’t have the societal impact he would in Brooklyn (for many reasons), his time with the Royals is still, IMHO, an important part of Canadian history.

Adding to comment #18, I played Boys Baseball for the Maennerchor Club in Erie, and at the end of every season, we would have our team party there. Our fathers would all get wasted and we would eat pizza and play duckpins. I believe the Maennerchor had six duck lanes and six standard bowling lanes (It could be 8). Randy Brewer, a body-builder turned radio personality and politico, was one of our coaches and he would roll the 16 lb. bowling ball with the same ferocity that we 12 year-olds could toss our 2 pound duck balls. Fond memories of that basement.
