One problem with this site, if you want to call it a problem, is that I’m sometimes inundated with more great material than I can post. This means some stuff inevitably gets back-burnered, which I always feel guilty about. David Frost, I’m sorry I haven’t gotten to you yet — soon, I promise. Ditto for you, Ned Paynter. But the person to whom I owe the biggest apology is Larry Bodnovich, who’s been sending me tons — and I mean tons — of amazing stuff over the past six weeks. Today I’m finally going to give him the first of what I expect to be many, many star turns. Larry specializes in screen grabs from vintage football footage. I’ll let him explain:
My brother and I have been collecting DVDs of old games for a while. We’re part of a group of people who trade this type of material. We have other sports besides football, but football is our favorite.
Some of these DVDs commercially produced, and some are game tapes or films that somebody has done. They are in color, sort of like ‘When it was a Game.’ Some are highlights or team histories, and some are complete games in color. Some are silent, and some have had play-by-play dubbed in.
Larry has sent me loads of college gridiron shots, but today we’re going with some NFL material. And not from any random NFL game, either — Larry got his hands on the famous Vikings/Lions game from 1964. That’s the game when the Vikes wore white at home but the Lions didn’t get the memo, because they showed up with their own white jerseys, creating a white-on-white mishmash that must have been very confusing for the quarterbacks (and probably the fans, too). So the decision was made to have the Vikes switch to their purple jerseys, which they changed into right there on the sideline. Fans were then treated to the spectacle of the NFL’s first solid-purple team.
Other notes from this same game:
• I wonder how many NFL teams had cheerleaders in 1964? (The Steelers were the first team to use them, in 1961.)
• Look at those wussy officials wearing plastic rain slickers. Anyone know when they stopped wearing those things?
• Check out the band in the background of this shot.
• Lots of oddities in this scoreboard shot: The letter “O” appears in several different typefaces; the “Y” is unusual; and hey, two quarts, that’s a half-gallon!

First, regarding Jim Wagner’s imaginary team logos, Glenn Stern notes that Jim’s concept for the San Diego Missions (top-left of this page) is very similar to the logo for a real team, minor league baseball’s San Antonio Missions. … And second, Todd Vaughn’s scrapbook of woven labels from Chatham Mills in Pittsboro, North Carolina, prompted this from Pittsboro native Chris Warfford: “Chatham Mills was known as the worlds largest manufacturer of woven labels. 1. Ricko — Thanks for posting the picture of all nine Pirates 1970s combinations late yesterday. Note that one of the comments at the bottom says the Pirates continued to wear black and gold at home in 1980, after they had gone to the all-white uniform (contrary to what I thought). The question is: Did they mix and match the solid whites with the blacks and golds, like they did with the pinstripes?
2. When I first saw Paul’s post this morning about the Rangers getting silly mixing and matching their reds and blues, I agreed with him (still do — uniform choices are getting out of hand). But then I thought: I loved it when the Pirates did this in the 1970s. Then again, I was 10 years old. With age comes wisdom, maturity, and the knowledge that limited mixing is advisable.
3. As for the old Yankee Stadium being torn down: I was at the first game of the new Yankee Stadium (still have the ticket stubs) in 1976, and again for Seaver’s 300th win in 1985. I loved it, still love it, and I’m a diehard Red Sox fan (and a one-time Mets fan). Sad to see it go.

Whats the deal with teams going dark color numbers on light color jerseys? It almost NEVER looks right. Like with the Braves and their red unis and navy numbers or Syracuse with their orange jerseys and blue numbers or Virginia Tech with their orange jerseys and maroon numbers. Its just painful in most cases.
There should be a Uni-rule on this one. If you are going to wear a light colored bright jersey, you’re required to wear white numbers trimmed in your team’s darker color. Period, end of argument.

I couldn’t help but not watch the Royals video clip (especially being a KC’er living in NYC). What I found was awesome was the time-lapse at the end of the clip, but there was a point in there that I found pretty amusing. At one point the crane had lowered enough so the stand was below the crown and in front of the giant video screen and then there were NCAA games that were being shown. I couldn’t help but think about the suggestions for optimal viewing distance for my lcd tv and then wonder what would be the optimal viewing distance for that giant screen. Wonder how much of the game could they actually see?

And thanks to Paul and Phil for all the work they do for all of us. As Paul said I had been sending in a lot of material. I was originallly looking for and sending in color grabs from the 1940’s and 50’s Some late 1930’s too. But when my brother brought over the early 1960’s AFL and NFL I had a balst watching those and picking out grabs that I thought were fun to look at.
Paul and Phil are good guys. That happen to be very busy guys

I do, however, agree that those teams who introduce a black third jersey just for the sake of having a third jersey is a shitty and extremely lame practice.

I can’t get the Vikings cheerleader photo to come up. I get a shot of the line of scrimmage instead.
If I recall correctly, the Viking cheerleaders were the Parkettes from St Louis Park High School. They wore very traditional high school cheerleader outfits.
In the 70s, around the time the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders were selling a ton of posters, the Vikings decided to spice up the look of the Vikings cheerleaders and put out their own poster. There was some uproar about dressing high school girls up in the new uniforms, but you could buy the poster just about anywhere. (It was later revealed that some of the young women on the posters were professional models.)
Anyway, the connection to the Parkettes lasted until the mid 80s when the Vikings started recruiting their own cheer squad.
Why am I posting two comments about cheerleaders in as many days?

Thing about Michigan or winged helmet is this,
There were a lot of teams in the 1930’s that had winged or winged type helmets.Like a fellow uni watcher Nick knows from old Football Illustrated’s or Illustrated Football. Just look at the 1930’s helmets for many teams. Now maybe not all had the exact style but several did and others had the look.
I do have most of the 1930’s Illustrated Football. There was no better period for college football uniforms then the late 1920’s until maybe 1940.
The 1950’s for football uniforms was rather boring. Most helmets had a stripe and numbers on the side. But I still love seeing color action or pictures from the 50’s

That NOB on Salty’s jersey is one of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen.
It’s a good thing that (1) he’s a big guy with broad-enough shoulders to fit those huge letters in, (2) wears a number containing a “1″ rather than two wide digits.
The Rangers’ jersey just has too much going on. Names on the backs (which are already bigger than, say, the more rationally-sized Oriole NOBs), triple-layered numbers (making the letters wider), shadows (a virtual fourth layer), those little warts on the letters (wider still)… I think that if they dumped any two of these things, the jersey would look decent. As it is, it’s just hideous.
And, on an unrelated note, I remember Bengie Molina of the Giants having a chest protector whose back strap perfectly obscured his jersey number (1) last year. This year, he’s got something different and you can make out his number now.

Guys, I need some help. I need to know the cap worn by the 1991 Ball State baseball team. Specifically, the cap worn with their white jerseys. I’ve had no luck. My guess is that they used the traditional Red Sox cap, because the Ball State road jerseys had lettering was in the same style as the “B” on the Red Sox cap. Although, the Ball State white jerseys does not have this style of lettering, so not sure.
Also, the 1990 Ball State team wore a gold bordered U.S. flag patch on the left sleeve (during first Gulf War). Does anyone know the size of this flag patch? Is there a universal size for sleeve flag patches on baseball jerseys?
I appreciate any help. Sorry for the length.

I had honestly never heard of sewing the designer labels into other shirts. I know we never did that, but we’re the salt of the earth…so to speak.
But I do remember having 18-24″ rolls of woven labels everywhere around the house/farm and using them for rope, tie-downs and even to cordon off the garden. We had a Saks Fifth Avenue garden and a Jones new York garden. They’re very strong and very useful.

Hello all… so I’m a Marlins fan and was inspired by a previous uniwatch post where the Marlins uniform was updated. So I figured I would make my own new version using only the basic Paint program that I have here at work. I kept the logos and everything the same… not too hi-tech. I just wanted to illustrate what a new color scheme would do to the current look without all the BLACK. So I tried my best to substitute all BLACK for a new MARLIN BLUE I came up with. I also tried to sub all current teal with a simple orange color. Please let me know what you all think:

Young art director here (excellent athlete and huge sports fan) just looked over my shoulder at the Vikings-Lions white-on-white game. He hadn’t heard the story, so I filled him and went though the images.
He said, “Vikings should go back to their old uniforms. I shouldn’t say this, but all the new uniforms out there today look like they were designed by girls. Stripes everywhere, a splotch of color here. Not masculine and the colors are just…off. Like all the shades of maroon….”

Notice the nearly full house behind Merle Harmon and that Yellow Ball. It was mostly freebies to make the game look good on TV. I remember a bunch of school buses coming to pick up most of the players from my Youth Baseball league. The lights went out at halftime and in retrospect, it’s a wonder they were turned back on. Of course none of us 11 and 12 year-olds wondered “how the heck are they going to make money off of this?”. Well, they didn’t…..

I used the details of pair of wideouts…Al Young for the Stars (black shoes spatted) and Tony Lomax, I believe (white Riddells with black snug-ties and snug-fit), for the Sharks (I’m at work; sketch is at home; and don’t ask why I remember such minutiae, because I don’t KNOW why, LOL).
Notice the animation of the stork making a delivery. Good clue it was the first telecast.

1:27: Message on the bulletin board in the Rangers clubhouse this morning “No Red Unis on the Road.” This from clubhouse manager Zack Minasian, who probably can’t stow all the different uniform combos the Rangers now own. Especially since they pretty much just created this red hats, white tops look out of the blue. The Rangers lead 5-0 after one inning while wearing Red hats today. Good luck, Zack, trying to keep the red stuff off the plane.

The reason I thought it might be Missouri/Iowa State is the weird double dropoff in that area as depicted in that photo. Reminds me of historic photos of Faurot Field. OTOH, a gold “I” would say “University of Iowa”.

Not exaclty uni-related, but I’m looking for some help.
I’m trying to find a good picture of a Detroit Tigers/Pittsburgh Pirates game. Since they don’t exactly play all the time, google images has only a few useable results and I was wondering if anyone has some good pictures available. I could be a few years old, it could be from spring training, it could be an all-star game, or even the 1909 World Series. I’m just looking for picture with a Pirate and Tiger in uniform.

The Twins wore the “Twinkies” throwbacks for the opener, and then the “Softball Sammy” blues the last 3 games. The bulls are wearing green unis for the NBA’s go green promotion. Thing is its not the same one as the St. Patty’s day version which was green with black numbers and lettering with “Bulls” across the chest. These have red numbers and a red “Chicago” on the chest.

I really dislike when NBA teams wear colors at home and this Go-green thing has gone wayyy too far, not it’s destroy NBA jerseys, though i actually liked the Nuggets version.

By the way, how sick am I? I was at the sign-up meeting for my son’s T-Ball earlier tonight and I seriously considered putting him on the team that practices on Monday nights even though there’s absolutely no way in hell he can ever make it to Monday night practices because of a scheduling conflict.
Why? The orange team practices on Mondays and he’s never been on a team that wears orange for any sport.
So I signed him up for the blue team, but now I’m lamenting the fact that I didn’t find out if it’s royal, navy or powder blue.

I have not read the comments yet, but as a former baseball player who wore my pants below my shoes i know that many players who wear that style poke their cleat spikes through their pants for two purposes
1. to hold them down below the cleats.
2. so their spikes can still dig into the ground!
I really dont mind players who wear baggy pants because i know how comfortable they can be.

I have officiated lower level football games with both teams in white and at lower levels it is not really a problem. Especially if the teams have different color helmets or pants. One time, several years ago I officiated a playoff high school basketball game where one team wore gold uniforms which were like Iowa Hawkeye gold and the visitors showed up with uniforms which were like Georgia Tech gold. The colors were different enough but we had to remember to call the teams by the actual color of their jersey numbers (one wore white numbers and the other wore black). By doing this we hopefully wouldn’t say “gold ball” and have both teams think it was their ball.

In the video of Patrick Sharp “throwing” out the first pitch, did his jersey have the William Wirtz memorial patch? Looked like it did. There was certianly something on the jersey where the patch was located last season.
