The NFL began rolling out the details of its AFL throwback program yesterday, and there’s a lot to like. The jerseys and helmets look pretty damn sweet, no? (For the full effect, check out this larger version.) Here’s a bit of additional info and observations:
• Some details still need to be worked out. For example, that photo shows a white Pats jersey and a blue Bills jersey, but the Bills and Pats are supposed to be wearing throwback gear in Foxboro on Sept. 14th. So will the Pats be wearing white at home for that game? I posed that question to an NFL rep and was told, “Not necessarily.” Not sure if they’re being coy or if they haven’t laid all the groundwork yet.
• The sight of Josh McDaniels holding a Jay Cutler jersey is apparently being interpreted as a peace offering.
• Speaking of the Broncos, I’m sure you want to know if their 1960 throwback design will include the vertically striped socks. I asked about that and was told, to my surprise, yes. I have a feeling this plan may go the way of the Texas Rangers’ two-tone helmets once fans and players make their feelings known, but we’ll see. It would be a major coup if they actually went through with it. And then, as James Craven suggested in last night’s comments, they could hold a throwback bonfire.
• Aside from the Denver hosiery news, no other pants or socks info is available yet.
• As we all know, the Chiefs used to be called the Dallas Texans, so their throwback uniform features a Texans helmet. This has ruffled some feathers in Kansas City, where some idiots think the team would be “betraying Missouri” or something like that by wearing the shape of Texas on their helmets. A KC sports station apparently spent most of yesterday afternoon trying to stoke the fires on this one, and the station has even launched a petition drive. When you all stop laughing, could someone please tell these people that franchises sometimes like to honor their history, even if that history was in another city? I realize this probably says more about a talk radio blowhard who’d rather stir up phony outrage over a phony issue for an afternoon instead of actually thinking (much less working) than it does about Kansas City fans as a whole, but still, you’d think KC — which was lucky enough to get the Kings/Royals from Cincinnati and the A’s from Philly and then didn’t support either team enough to keep them from relocating again — would be less uppity about this kind of thing. Just sayin’.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Back in January of 2008, I ran this entry about a curling team that bought some vintage sweaters on eBay and adopted them as their official team attire. Now Nolan Thiessen, a member of that team, has checked in with an upsetting story: “One of the sweaters was stolen out of our second’s truck a week ago, so we can’t wear them anymore — can’t wear only three of four (you wouldn’t be impressed with our threads that we have to wear now). We’d love to hear from anyone if they ever see the sweater turn up.
Not sure how much anyone could end up getting out of it — tough to sell a sweater with our names and sponsor cresting on it.” So if you see one of these on eBay or at your local vintage shop, give me a holler. … The Nuggets’ green jerseys, slated to be worn in early April, will look like this (with thanks to Kayce Harris). … The NFL is considering lots of changes to its schedule and playoff format. … Ladies and gentlemen, your Miami Marlins. … A little birdie has generously photographed an entire Niketown employee handbook for our enjoyment. Many pearls of wisdom to appreciate here, including the suggestion to greet the consumer “in an authentic way,” such as by saying, “Cool tee! Where did you get it?” Sounds good, but I wore my “Nike Can Blow Me” tee to one of their shops the other day and nobody said boo. Phonies. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Weird scene in the final WBC game, as Yong-Kyu Lee slid head-first into an infielder’s knee and shattered his helmet. You can see video of the play about one-third of the way into the clip on this page. … I have a parking meter in the corner of my living room, so I was disappointed to hear that someone in Chicago is defacing parking meters (with thanks to Kenny Keil). … Slow news day at Deadspin. Basically, a food blogger set up his own meat bracket nine days ago, and now he and some of his readers have their bratwursts in a twist cuz I ripped him off or didn’t credit him or whatever. The truth, of course, is that meat brackets have been going on for years, so neither of us was exactly splitting the atom here. In any case: Yes, his bracket came out before mine, and I would’ve happily credited him if I’d seen it. But I hadn’t, so I didn’t. … Long-overdue shout-out: I never would’ve been able to attend the Super Flush at the Mets’ new stadium if John Vivino hadn’t told me about it a few weeks ago. Thanks, buddy! … And speaking of the Big Flush, my T-shirt is a hit on eBay. … Dwyane Wade gave away a jersey to a disabled kid the other day (with thanks to Dominick Carfello). … Chris Warfford reports that the UNC baseball team, which usually wears black cleats, went with white on Sunday. … The baseball team at Jesuit High School in Sacramento wears these stirrups. “Many of the boys like to wear the pants low,” says Jesuit alum Germano Diniz, “but there is one thing that is always true: The ship must show.” … TV note from Mark Wolven, who writes: “In Monday night’s episode of Rules of Engagement, Jeff (the character played by Patrick Warburton) comes in after a softball game wearing his uniform, which has ‘Buttermakers’ script (an obvious reference to coach Morris Butermaker, played by Walter Matthau in the original Bad New Bears) and a Chico’s Bail Bonds sleeve patch.” … “Went to a stanford baseball game recently and noticed a memorial (embroidered) patch on their uni,” says Paul Wiederecht. “Here’s the info from their media guide.” … “My wife and I were visiting her family in Taiwan in November when I came across a note that shows the Taipei Little League team when they won the Little League World Series,” says Jeff La Hie. “The note is actually quite impressive in person, with the sanitaries showing up very clearly.” … Michael Orr was watching a girls’ high school soccer game and noticed that the captain of one team was wearing her captain’s band on her calf instead of on her arm. “Maybe her arms were just too small, or maybe it’s common in girls soccer,” he says. Anyone know more about this? … A few days ago I mentioned that Ozzie Guillen wrote “OPD” (for Oakland Police Dept.) on his cap. Now James Huening has provided a photo. … Remember how Chase Utley hiked up his pants when playing in a minor league game, because the Phils require all their minor leaguers to go high-cuffed? Cole Hamels did the same thing yesterday (with thanks to Kevin Riley). … In other Phillies news, sort of, Sarge Matthews now has his own line of hats (as reported by Mario Carr). … Larry Bodnovich likes to colorize old black-and-white photos — especially old shots of Ohio State football. … “As you may recall, Bob Knight coached the ’84 Olympic basketball team,” writes Mark McGinnis. “I don’t know whose idea it was, but that team wore familiar warm-up pants, at least for Indiana fans. I had forgotten this completely.”

I have always disfavored the windbreaker-under-the-baseball-jersey look, but examples such as this one drive me over the edge. A green windbreaker under a Reds jersey? Were the players bringing whatever windbreakers they had in their closet at home?

The AFL throwbacks are very cool, but since they are celebrating the 50th anniversary, shouldn’t every team be wearing a throwback from the AFL’s first season? Choosing a “legacy season” to honor doesn’t feel right.

aren’t the old AFL teams playing two “throwback” uni games? if so, might the scheduling geniuses have given all teams wearing them both a home and away game, and therefore, they could wear both a white and a color jersey? (even tho some of the jerseys shown were white and some were in color, does it necessarily follow the white-wearing teams will only be the away teams to the color-wearing home teams?)
i haven’t seen the schedule for next year, just going on my rapidly failing memory that the orig. 8 would be playing 2 games in retro unis…and figure the NFL would love the marketing opportunities inherent in offering the public two new jerseys to purchase…but i could be wrong

I know all of you are big fans of John Buccigross’ weekly column on ESPN.com, so I’m sure you have seen this equipment-related item already:
Have you heard much about Marc Savard’s challenging Sidney Crosby to a fight but saying he wouldn’t because Crosby was wearing a visor? After which Crosby returned to the bench, removed the visor and returned to the ice. At that point, Savard backed down. I feel Crosby gets no respect, and this type of action shows he’s a true hockey player and a great leader.
Tyler
Grove City, Pa.
I made a phone call (old school!) and a Penguins team source tells me at least some of this happened in the March 15 Bruins-Pens game. Savard made a comment about Crosby and his visor. Crosby then went to the Penguins’ bench and had equipment dude Dana Heinze remove his visor. Heinze told my source he had never had such a request. Now, as far as Savard’s “backing down,” my source could not confirm whether there were any more verbal exchanges between Savard and Crosby for the rest of the game.

Many Bills fans, including this one, are hoping Buffalo will unveil a white throwback to go with their blue one…the all white look would look clean and sharp, but my favorite all-time Bills uni’s were the ‘73 classics: the standing red buffalo on the white helmet, with blue pants to go with the road white jersey.

The Broncos , for those games , should maybe get the guy who appears in the UPS commercials , to draw up some plays on the white board.

So the NFL wants to play the Super Bowl in mid-February? What’s next, the World Series at Thanksgiving? Greed trumps over all. Never mind diluting the product. Short-term gain is prized. There is a reason no one cares about the NBA Finals in June, after two months of playoffs where everybody’s grandmother is invited to play.
When will they understand that less is more?

I also read somewhere that when the Chiefs and Cowboys meet they will be wearing throwbacks to commemorate the time when both teams shared the same city in Dallas. It will be a home game for the Chiefs (Texans) so they should be wearing the red jersey. Does that mean we will finally get to see the white version of the Dallas Cowboys throwbacks this year too?

Your comment about the Pittsburgh soccer team made me think, is there any other city where all the pro sports franchises share the same color scheme? Example Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins all using black and gold.
———————–
I lived in Pittsburgh when the Spirit were playing. They made a big deal about the fact that they were the only city to have four teams wearing the same colors. This was shortly after the Penguins also switched to Black and Gold.
But then we got the . . . . . Pittsburgh Maulers:

I was pretty sure that the FIFA soccer rules called for the captain to wear a band around his arm. Looked it up in their ‘laws of the game’ (Fifa.com). Interestingly the captain is mentioned a couple of times (toss at the start of the game among other), but the composition of the team states no more than ‘eleven players one of which is identifiable as the goalkeeper.’ So no captain required, apparently.
When I was playing soccer as a kid, we usually didn’t bother with the bands at all. Instead we used a colored velcro sockstopper of just a couple of strips of masking tape around the upper arm.

I like the AFL stuff, but I want to say the Patriots gear is inaccurate. The original Pat Patriot’s face was different than the one on the helmet they’re showing, the expression was for lack of better words, “psychopath/’roid rage”. Wish they would wear the tricorn w/number helmet too. Also, with the Marlins taking the Miami name, new unis possible?

Too bad it was against the Birmingham Stallions, the squad that QB Cliff Stoudt jumped ship to join.
That sellout crowd was there to pelt him with snowballs. They never drew anything close to that again.
I may have mentioned it before, but there was a story in the Pittsburgh Press that was telling the woes of the squad and they created a version of that logo with the steelworker banging himself in the helmet with the hammer.
I’m going to have to check microfilm archives of the Press to find that. It was very well done.

(sigh) Major goofs are that the Chargers, Raiders, Bills and Patriots are not their original 1960 uniforms. Pats’ problem, largely, is the absence of the three-corner-hat helmet logo.
Can’t tell about NY Titans. They should be sans shoulder loops and absent any white at all (on homes, or course).
Others are just flat-out the wrong years and wrong color schemes. Charger lightning bolts didn’t become gold, and the blue anything other than dark royal, until the franchise moved to SD in’61. Raiders colors were black and light gold 1960, ‘61 and ‘62. Bills’ were silver and royal for the first two seasons, with no helmet logo, just player’s number on sides.
Typical half-assed, revisionist history from the NFL.
Actually, I really don’t CARE whether they get it right. Just pointing out that, as expected, they didn’t.
As to the Missouri blowhard bitching about using the state of Texas on the Chiefs helmet: Get life, dickhead. You don’t change history just cuz it suits you. Oh, wait, this is the NFL. You CAN do that. Never mind, go ahead, run your mouth all you want.
That’s why we’ll let the Bronco players vote on whether or not they wear the vertical striped socks. Jesus, whatta bunch of babies. I’ll say it again, part of the fun of these throwbacks IS that so of them are so ugly. How low does your IQ have to be that you don’t GET that element of it?

It’s part of the whole fun. See, when the Broncos finally got rid of the infamous socks, the city actually had a public burning of them. That is why only a few pairs are left.

Seems to me that the KC throwbacks “controversy” is pretty much a sportsradio-style ratings gimmick. Too much time with too few real subjects of interest-they have to make something up. And its the “throw everything against the wall and see what sticks” mantra.
I’d say the only reason it gets the slightest amount of traction is that it’s the Texans. If the team named “Cowboys” had migrated up to KC in the early 1960’s instead of the Texans, then this fall there would be a star on the helmets, everyone in KC would buy some retro gear, and life would go on.
I just hope Houston keeps its NFL team for the indefinite future… :-)

I listened to that rant by the KC radio guy yesterday on my way home from work. I really think that his good points points were that it may be confusing to people that the Texans were once in Dallas but a new franchise started in Houston. Also that the Texans were only in Dallas for 2 seasons and other teams got to pick their legacy jersey – don’t know if that is true, but facts don’t matter sometimes.
I guess for me, I do think it is neat that the throwbacks will be shown in Dallas. I would like to think the Texans helmet honors the Hunt family more than it does disrespecting KC.

I just think not giving a lot of people a chance to see some uniforms (good or bad) in color that were never seen on color TV–and rarely in color photographs–is a real opportunity wasted.
And I WAS remiss in not saying that if a latter day Broncos throwback bonfire were done tongue-in-cheek, it would be fun and funny, and a perfect throwback occasion.

Thanks for bringing to the country’s attention the ramblings we have to put up with in KC. KK gets upset over something like this all the time. His biggest issue was refurbishing the current stadiums rather than move downtown (something the teams did not want to do), so his real estate holdings downtown would increase in value. Crap like this, plus the mayor not wanting the teams, with drive them out of town. And to be fair, Charlie O Finley (A’s) was good riddance, the Scouts were stocked with minor leaguers and never given a chance to compete, and the Kings were going no matter what.
And the Eagles yellow and blue look better than the the black and green they wear now. Bring back the Jaws era unis.

Aw, hell, you’re right. I do care. I really hoped the NFL would do this whole thing properly and with a genuine sense of history. It would have been a real treat, a glimpse into another era, much like the enjoyment we get when someone discovers vintage color game footage.
What a team wore in 1960 isn’t subjective, it’s objective…as objective as the game or season stats. Between them, Tom Flores and Babe Parilli threw 17 touchdown passes for the Raiders in 1960, that’s a fact. It’s also a fact that they threw them wearing what was, essentially, a black and light gold version of the Bears unis at the time.
The only people who ever saw those unis play in color, though, are those who attended the games. No regular season games of that AFL era were telecast in anything but black and white. And, I have yet to see a single color game action photo from a Raider home game during any of their first three seasons.
That’s what would have been fun to see…something no human has ever seen…those unis (along with the accurate Bills, Chargers, Oilers roads) playing on TV. In color.
I truly believe, as Uni Watchers, most of us would really have appreciated that bit of “time travel”. This would have been about our only chance. And we aren’t going to get it.
So, yeah, it’s frustrating.

How exactly, I ask, would it do the Raiders a disservice to play a couple games in those unis? I don’t think that would have been done if it wasn’t considered a more than viable baseball market. If they’re wearing those arabic numbers at home and saying they are any year OTHER than 1960, they need to do some homework on their own past. Those were a one-year wonder. In fact, the only year of two-color numbers or two-color striped socks for the Oilers was 1960. Two-color numbers weren’t seen again until helmets and pants were changed to silver in late 60s.

I realize this probably says more about a talk radio blowhard who’d rather stir up phony outrage over a phony issue for an afternoon instead of actually thinking…..
Hey, you’ve perfectly described KC Radio Blowhard Kevin Keitzman! He knows three things: Kansas State University Wildcat athletics, how to take care of his sponsors, and stirring up phony outrage. This formula has made him a wealthy man, which does say something unfortunate about the local sports radio audience.
I think I speak for most Kansas Citians, apart from Keitzman and the rabid looney fringe of Chiefs fans, when I say this is not really a big deal.
Chiefs uniforms over the years have been a series of small adjustments to the striping, TV numbers, amount of gold trim, and the size of the arrowhead on the helmet. The only drama surrounded the current head coach’s feelings about red pants. At least the Texans’ look is something different.

Pardon me for not reading the 143 posts above me. But in relation to the female high school player wearing the captains band on her sock rather than on her bicep; in high school or club soccer there is no defined rule. The captain can wear the band wherever it may be visible.
As for collegiate or professional soccer the band must be worn around the arm.

Maybe so, but where he wants to play and where (if anywhere) the Broncos will send him are two entirely different things.
Like LI Phil said, Cutler is under contract to the Broncos. They couldn’t care less where Cutler wants to go because he belongs to them. This isn’t the John Elway situation. The Broncos don’t have to trade Cutler and he only hurts himself if he sits out.
Although I will agree with one of your observations: Josh McDaniels handled this pretty badly to begin with. Not that it absolves Cutler of any of the primadonna-ish stuff he’s pulled, but if you tell a guy that he’s your guy and to trust you and then you turn around and try to get rid of him you can’t really be surprised if he’s less than thrilled with you afterward.

One other thing, don’t know if its been mentioned, is that the Broncos apparently only had the one jersey (the yellow) which they wore for home and road that first couple of seasons, which would make the white Cutler jersey that McDaniels is holding up not right. Makes me wonder if they’d pull the yellow jersey with brown numbers as a home jersey. I also personally think they SHOULD go with the striped socks, and go whole hog with it. Besides, it would make this guy a really big hit with his DYI look :)

The actual newspaper has a printed bracket showing picutres of each “winner” moving on, so it makes a tiny bit more sense than just reading the story off the website. Easy to see why newspapers are going downhill rapidly.
Highlights of the comments:
Missouri vs. Memphis
Despite using a postliterate nickname, Missouri’s gold rolls over Memphis, which looks like a bad astronaut uniform from the 1970s.
North Carolina vs. Gonzaga
Neither is headed for “Project Runway,” but Gonzaga’s holistic design trounces Tar Heels’ preppy affect and “tramp stamp,” a nickname on the shorts’ backside. UNC’s argyle piping says, “Stick around for the postgame a cappella show.”
Syracuse vs. Oklahoma
A blowout. In their home whites, anyway, the Orange’s hip, fresh and youthful design blows past the Sooners’ soporific look, straight off the shelf from the local sporting goods store.

And, for the umpteenth time, the Broncos may have worn light gold on the road a couple times early-on, but they DID have white jerseys for both seasons of the brown-gold era, as well as brown-white socks to wear with them. The gold-only story is a Uni version of an old wives’ tale, designed to embellish stories of the shoestring nature of the early AFL. It’s total B.S. Oh, they were shoestring, alright. That part’s not B.S., but the one-jersey story is.

The reason why the shoulder stripes don’t go all the way around on the Colts jerseys as compared to the SD jersey is because of where the stripes land. The SD stripes are farther out and actually run almost around the outside of the shoulder. Captain’s armbands are one of those random accessories that have not evolved at all. They’re the same ginormous piece of elastic that they were when I started playing in the 80s. Considering that you can get neoprene headbands and straps to hold your sleeves up and a million other things, its a little odd…
Because of this, they’re really not at all comfortable. You have these super-thin, breathable jerseys and you basically constrict the whole sleeve to your arm, which just feels strange. That’s why we started wearing them on our legs…

im sorry if i conuzzled ya larry (i was hoping ricko would pop on to ’splain it, as this disciple would prefer the master to more clearly say it than i can)…but…
when the broncs switched from the brown lid after ‘61, to what would become their orange helmet from ‘62-65 (with the familiar white pony), they wore this helmet (i believe it was only in the preseason, but may have been for a couple regular season games)…because there are NO color photos (or at least none to be found — that would be the holy grail pic), it was widely assumed (and incorrectly so, according to ricko) that the pony was brown…it was not, but rather it was blue (shockingly, the blue didn’t show up very well which is why the switch to white occurred)
so, the running joke is to kid ricko by showing him that pic of the brown horse on the orange lid (and insisting that’s what the broncs actually wore) till his head explodes
however, as ricko will tell you, and in colorful detail, that the helmet was orange but with a blue pony — it was never brown, but until there is a color photo, we need to rely on rick’s eyes, since he (i believe) actually saw the orange and blue

If you’re gonna do it, why not do it right?
It would cost just as much or little money to do it accurately as it would to do so inaccurately, which they are chosing to do.
I also agree that no one has ever seen color TV of the early Bills, Broncos, or Raiders, and it would be special to experience that. There is much more to offer taking that approach than seeing the bills, Pats and Raiders unis worn in the very recent past and re-worn for this anniversary.
At least we can take some comfort in that they are improving over the weak 1994 effort made by the Bills, Jets, Cowboys and some others.
Also, the Broncos have just GOTTA wear the Yellow jerseys …. given that the legend has it that the 1960 Broncos GM was so cheap that he bought the original unis second hand, and that he contemplated wearing the Yellow jerseys for EVERY GAME – home and away – because they contrasted with the other teams in the AFL and so he would not have to buy a second set, even though they did end up wearing white jerseys for at least some road games in 1960-1961.

The “REASON” that they can’t get the stripes right – to go all the way around – even though the manufacterers were able to do so for 50 plus years until recently, is because the manufacterers are LAZY ASSED IDIOTS that can sell anything they want to sell, because they know most of us will continue to buy it because “that’s what the pros really wear” ….
Recently bought two high quality Titan’s/Jets Navy Blue jerseys on EBAY for about $30.00 apiece, they were made by an independent label for an autograph seller, and they have the full sleeves, full UCLA striping, and are as good as any jerseys sold as “authentic” by the NFL/Reebook cartel.
They (NFL/Reebok) could make them right, but they won’t. That also goes for most of the IDIOTS currently manufactering NCAA jerseys. however, you can go to a HS stadium on any Friday night and find them made correctly.

I’m extremely angry about the Oilers throwbacks.
A) Buds Adams stole my childhood football team from me at age 7. My family had season tickets and I was helpless to the situation.
B) He refused to sell us the Oilers logo back. (which is my favorite sports logo)
C) He still lives in Houston.
D) They retired all of OUR players in their ring of honor. (the only players that played in Tennessee in that ring of honor are Steve McNair and Eddie George)
E) Texans games are blacked out in Austin for Titans games.
F) They are our division rival.
And that’s why they are my most hated sports franchise. You can say they should keep their history, but I think people in Baltimore can feel what I’m saying. It’s as if Bud Adams neglected the fact that Houston supported the Oilers for over 30 years and helped to nurture the AFL into a respectable league. Adams basically told the citizens off Houston to fuck off when they left.
The KC gripe is bogus. No one in Dallas is sad about the Texans leaving, and the uni’s are solid. I think it’s mainly an anti Texas thing (inferiority complex). I just wish my Houston Texans would have mimicked that beautiful logo. It would have increased merchandise sales and made our team look classy, not trashy.
For those wondering if the Houston Texans are going to be around long, they are here to stay. We aren’t letting another NFL team go. The Texans have sold out every game, and we have a honest man as our owner.

What no one is getting is that the team got to CHOOSE their legacy year.
The other thing no one is getting is that the Chiefs PLAYED IN KC during the AFL years, and went to two super bowls too! Therefore the natural choice for the legacy years should be 1966 or 1969. Why choose a non championship Texans team over a championship Chiefs team.
If lets say we moved to KC in 1981 well after the AFL years in Dallas then having the Texans helmet would make perfect sense.

Hmmmm…
Someone here linked to this auction the other day…
http://lelands.com/b...
…when it said this was a 1962 game-used Raiders jersey.
It was then pointed out that the ‘62 Raiders had no white on their ‘62 home jerseys…that it had to be a ‘60 or ‘61 jersey. Also was noted that the Raiders had NOB both those seasons. This jersey does not.
I see the description has now changed to a ‘62 preseason jersey. Possible, but back number still far too high ever to have been used in conjunction with a NOB. Unless, of course, the jersey goes way, WAY back to one of first Raider games of 1960.
So…it’s either a fake, or even more valuable than they realize. Would be interesting to know the answer.

The key issue for American Football League fans is that the NFL is doing *anything* to “remember the AFL”. The fact that we’ll see AFL throwbacks from whatever year is exciting. The officials in the “Legacy” games will wear chinese-red-striped shirts and have the AFL logo on chest and cap. Unfortunately, the Original Eight AFL teams will *not* wear AFL patches except for the “Legacy” games. The 50th Anniversary patches for all the Original Eight leave something to be desired.
The AFL teams should follow KC’s lead and put a permanent AFL patch on their uniforms. See the backstory of the “Celebrate the AFL” movement at http://www.remembert...

As the guy behind the meat bracket from years ago (thanks for the link!), I can’t imagine why anyone would be a dick about it.
More meat brackets = more meat discussion = more meat consumption = the world is a better place.
