Time to pay another visit to our friend Will “Doc” Ginn (if you missed his Uni Watch debut, look here). Here’s his latest batch of unusual memorabilia:
• “I’ll bet you’ve never seen these three stickers together,” says Doc. Interesting how they didn’t try to make “Washington” fit in that little well between the “b” and the left wrist, the way they did with “Capital” and “Baltimore.”
• Here’s a rarity: a World Team Tennis bumper sticker — with a suggestive slogan to boot.
• And speaking of suggestive bumper stickers from fringe sports leagues, check this out. The team in question is the Connecticut Bicentennials of the NASL.
• Apparently sports in the 1970s was on big sexytime-o-rama. Nice to see the Spirit stuck with Pittsburgh’s black/gold theme, though.
• “I have never seen this Pistons logo anywhere else,” says Doc. Me nether. Dig the basketball-patterned “hubcaps.”
• Before the NFL’s Houston Texas, there were the WFL’s Houston Texans. I love — love — the “globe” in the center. If the WFL had used that for their logo, instead of this, they might still be around today.
• Did you realize that WFL teams played a 20-game schedule? I didn’t, until Doc showed me this.
• More WFL ephemera here. Note that the signature at lower-left is from a guy identified as “Portland Storm Governor.” Man, a football team with a governor? I thought that was strictly a hockey thing.
• “Love this little Houston Rockets guy,” says Doc. Me too.
• And speaking of the Rockets, I had actually forgotten that they once played in San Diego.
That’ll do for now. My thanks to Doc for sharing more of his stash with us.

The Proctor Chronicles, Continued: Terry Proctor has an interesting take on the snafu involving the North Lawndale basketball uniforms. Dig:
I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of the manufacturer and then the dealer that sold the uniforms to the school. Since the majority of basketball uniforms are sold for use in high schools, it should be the manufacturer’s first responsibility to make garments that comply with the rules set forth by the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations), which are clearly outlined on the NFHS web site.
I personally check over the uniform rules before each season. For example, in 2008-09 every home team was supposed to wear white uniforms, rather than gold or light blue or silver gray. This rule was announced two years ago, in order to give schools enough lead time. But as I watched high school games this season, I saw that many schools were still wearing light (non-white) colors at home. When I would ask about it I was told that “the local association gave us a waiver.” Well, that’s fine. But in a state competition, the state association will not be so understanding. That’s what happened in Illinois.
Are the uniform rules silly? Yes, a lot of them are. But they’re presented clearly and understandably to the schools and with plenty of lead time to make the changes. …
I couldn’t stand to know that a uniform I sold was declared illegal and ended up costing a team a game (or worse, a state championship). Without bragging, I take enough pride in my craft to know the rules going in. I’ve alerted manufacturers of impending changes so that they can check them out and make appropriate corrections. I’ve had to tell schools that a particular design feature or lettering graphic they want is not legal and then I suggest acceptable options.
No, I feel the ultimate blame for this incident lies with the manufacturer/sales agent. They frankly did not do their homework. It’s just that simple.
In case you missed it yesterday afternoon, my own take on the North Lawndale situation is here.
Uni Watch News Ticker: As promised, my “I flushed the toilet at the Mets’ new stadium” T-shirt is now available on eBay. … The Lions’ new helmet logo and wordmark have been leaked — by the NFL Shop. They might take that item down, but too late — it’s all over the web now. … Several readers have noted that Xavier’s C.J. Anderson wore brown tape over his white socks during the Xavier/Wisconsin game. But I think he was actually wearing low socks and sweatbands, not tape. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Admirably obsessive breakdown of the Rockies’ performance in each of their uniforms here. … Jeff Popovich notes that the L.A. Galaxy and D.C. United both wore American flag sleeve patches on Sunday. “I don’t remember flags being on kits before,” he says. Anyone know more? … Bizarre scene in Clevo the other day, as a Lake Erie Monsters hockey game had to be postponed because the pink ice (for breast cancer awareness) became unplayable (thanks, Vince). … Check this out: An old Pennsylvania Railroad baseball uniform with safety messages. … Here’s something odd: Boomer Esiason wearing a No. 63 helmet (with thanks to Stephen King). … Lots of old Wrigley Field photos here, and old Comiskey pics here. My favorite: Chisox usherettes (nice find by Steve Shanabruch). … Here’s a new one, at least to me: Some NCAA umps have been wearing pullovers with zip-off sleeves. Reminds me of the button-on sleeves that players used to wear (interesting find by Rob Montoya). … I’m pretty sure we’ve covered this before, but someone please refresh my memory: What’s the deal with the Bears wearing block numerals? … Dog Bites Man Dept.: MLB is once again warning players not to pull their pant cuffs down under their shoe heels. They go through this dance every season and then the players keep doing it anyway. … Good mask-painting story here (with thanks to Mark Snider). … Is it possible that the good people at Nike might be selling a substandard product? This article thinks so (with thanks to Greg Riffenburgh). … Is this the cast of a high school musical? A troupe of mimes? Nope — it’s the 1982 boys’ gymnastics team from Alan Borock’s high school. … Best White Sox ever, by uni number (with thanks to Steve Johnston). … You wouldn’t believe the response I got to yesterday’s meat bracket (among other things, the national meat buyer for SuperTarget liked the article so much that he’s sending me some steaks) — never imagined it would generate so much fun feedback. My only regret: I forgot to work a reference to this 45 into the piece. … And speaking of meat, the fourth graf of this item states that the new Yankee Stadium will include “a window found in the left-field concourse of the Field Level where fans can see butchers from Lobel’s of New York [best butcher shop in NYC -- PL] preparing prime, dry-aged steaks to be served in various locations in the Stadium.” … Now that’s some nice eye candy right there (thanks, Scott). … A 1910 New York Giants uniform was appraised on Antiques Roadshow the other night (with thanks to Casey Lute). … Chris Mycoskie reports that the Louisiana-Lafayette baseball team has been going high-cuffed recently.

My dad used to keep all his stubs from old Johnstown Jets games in the Eastern Hockey League and he’d tape them together end to end. By the end of the season, he’d have a long strip of tickets starting at the top of his wall and alomst reaching the floor.
I hate what TicketMaster, et al have done to tickets. I could have a stack and not know the difference between a race, a game and a concert. At least Pitt still puts some nice photos on their football and basketball packages.
I used to collect my stubs. Now, I used them for the special offers they might have on the back (or a free Big Mac should the Pens score during a designated power play) or for bookmarks.

Regarding the Lions’ logo leak, this reminds me of the time I was working at the Pirates Clubhouse Store. The year the Pirates changed to this logo: http://www.nationals...
Early in spring training we were set to have this big merchandise unveiling. We dedicated an entire wall to the new gear and had a tarp to cover the wall until the approved time, etc, etc.
Too bad all throughout the Christmas season we had a watch in our display case with said logo on it. Two weeks before the unveiling date, our head buyer called us about to have a stroke, asking us to pull the watch from the case.
No one really recognized it, and it was leaked in about four or five stores in western PA months before it was ready for the public.
Now, with the internet, things like that are going to be all over the place.

Re: baseball pants cuffs tucked under the shoe heels
I attended some Spring Training games this past week and observed just how prevalent this practice has become. Aside from greats like Nyjer Morgan and at-least-oks like Jeff Keppinger and Adam Rosales, I could scarcely find a player who did not have his cuffs tucked under his heels.
It was nauseating.

I have not yet seen a baseball manager or coach wearing pajama pants, but you have to figure that such a day will eventually come. After all, George Hendrick maintained his low-cuff look once he became a coach, instead of giving in to The Man and assuming a more traditional pair of pants.
So the question is: Who will be the first pajamas-wearing coach or manager?

In 1973 the bears white jerseys for the first half of the year had the block numbers because they were not tackle twill but rather (heat pressed? is that the term for screened numbers)
Poor choice of picture because the down lion is Chuck Hughes who died on the field during that game.

The uniform rules are VERY strict for umpires and the pullovers available are basically 1 type.
My guess is that he rolled his sleevess up as many umps often do.
The long sleeves often hinder use of the indicator and such.

From the Power Balance website: “POWER BALANCE was developed as the marriage of two ideas: First, years of extensive research into holographic and lenticular media showed the complexity of the hologram and the fact that it can be programmed to hold certain frequencies. Second, further research was necessary to understand what frequency it was that best promoted energy flow throughout the body. Once discovered, this led to the unconventional programming of bio-resonating frequencies onto holograms. The result was POWER BALANCE. Similar forms of this technology have been used in Eastern medicine for centuries and are quickly being introduced and embraced in the west.”

Bears wore block numbers on the white mesh jerseys early in season from 1971 thru 1973, then switched to normal durene jerseys late in season. On the home front, Bears wore normal rounded numerals on the mesh navy jerseys, but had NO orange and white sleeve stripes during the 1971-1973 early season era. Bears would switch to navy durene for the cold games late in season.
Lions did not have memorial patch for Chuck Hughes true, but DID sport a black armband on the left sleeve. It covered the thick inner NW stripe on both white and honolulu blue jerseys. They started the wearing the armband for the game after Hughes tragic passing, a 1971 Monday nighter at Milwaukee against the Packers.
Hope this helps.

This is new to the league this year. On the Bears block-number jerseys and the lack of sleeve stripes on early mesh football jerseys – it took jersey manufacturers a couple of years to figure out that you could silk-screen stripes on the mesh jerseys. On the Durene jerseys, the stripes were woven into the fabric, but you could not do that with the polyester mesh. The Dolphins went to mesh jerseys in 1970 and the sleeves were without stripes until 1972. That seems to be the general time frame between mesh jerseys arriving on the NFL scene and stripes reappearing on the sleeves.

With all due respect to Mr. Proctor (and I sincerely mean that), I think he may be a little behind the times with his statement that “the majority of basketball uniforms are sold for use in high schools”. I would say the overwhelming majority of basketball uniforms today are sold to non-NFHS teams. Think of what we used to call “summer league” ball, except that they are year-round now. I’m talking about AAU, BCI, Primetime Sports, and probably dozens of others.
The majority of these teams have uniforms as fancy as any high school varsity team, and they are not subject to the strict regulations of the NFHS, or the budget restrictions of the public school system. For the elite teams, recruiting can be intense (at all age groups), and the uniforms can play a big part. Most kids want to play for a team that has cool unis, and we all have a pretty good idea of what kids today think is cool in a uni.
So manufacturers today have this entire market to sell to that not only doesn’t care about the NFHS rules, in some cases they specifically want to go beyond them.
I think this puts the onus back on the HS coach to make sure the uniforms he buys fit within the NHFS guidelines. And if they don’t, at least bring your practice jerseys with you (or the JV team jerseys)!

I hear what you’re saying. In fact, I wondered the same thing about the Illinois school as far as why they couldn’t have been prepared with their JV or even practice unis.
That being said, your assessment of AAU may be a tad skewed. I think everything you say is correct, but when talking about the elite of programs.
However, and I’ve covered some AAU events in the Pittsburgh area, the great majority of the teams I’ve seen on the court are very basic in their gear. I’m not saying they look poor, but the teams aren’t shelling out a ton of money. I mostly saw lightweight dazzle type practice unis on teams. Some squads only had t-shirts.
I think Terry’s perspective and point is well taken. I wouldn’t put ALL the blame on the uni supplier but it is in their best interest to be aware of the rules of the local governing bodies that have rule over the teams they supply.
That being said, it’s also the responsibility of the school’s administration, AD, coaches, prinicpal, superintendent, whoever, to know what is and isn’t within compliance of the rules. Especially when the rules are:
A. clear cut and
B. readily available for everyone involed to get a copy of.
I have nothing ill to say of the officials who enforced the rule. Power trip? No way. What good is a rule if you don’t enforce it? (What you get is an NHL playoff game in overtime!!!!)

I do have a question for everyone: It seemed as though Korea was wearing a different style of batting helmet. Any details on that? I am stunned that the helmet broke in pieces like that on someone’s ankle.
Kinda makes you wonder how much safety you’d have from a line drive if it just cracks into pieces like that on simple human driven force.

OTOH, the Marlins will be moving a number of miles from Joe Robbie. As noted, I don’t know all the complaints from the old Orange Bowl Stadium: it might have been sheer skybox economics that made the Dolphins move, it may have been parking or crime or any number of other factors. The thing that stands out to me is that the visiting team must wear white. At Johnstown, they haven’t had a white jersey in four or five years. They’ve worn black at home and columbia blue on the road. They’ve never had any issues with clashing colors. In the conference they play in most teams’ home unis are black or red. They played a team that uses a more royal shade of blue, but the unique shade of light blue really doesn’t cause a problem.
I kind of got used to them going without white, it’ll be odd to see it again.

Attention all hockey fans, particularly RPI grads or NCAA hockey fans:
Does anyone know why the players in the 1984 Frozen Four were wearing what appears to be hybrid cages on their helmets? The goalie is wearing the birdcage, but I’ve never seen Adam Oates, the RPI player pictured, with this type of cage on ever.
The hybrid cage was introduced by Dave Dryden for goaltenders by this time, but there is absolutely nothing about players wearing the hybrid-style cage.

Just to clarify my #163 comment, I’m not saying that all the 1980 Mariel Boatlift refugees were criminals – just a small group of that group, including, I guess, Tony Montana, although I haven’t seen Scarface in a while.

Didn’t the Bulls wear the script “Chicago” red jersey as a second road alt in recent years? Seems I’ve seen it show up occasionally, perhaps as a throwback set that was reused later in the season, over the last ten years or so. The front number was better positioned on these.

Don’t know if anyone has seen this, but a lady on FoxSports put a worst college jerseys list together. Some are obvious, but Michigan State at #1? Seriously? There are far worse out there.

The umpires when they wear their blue and black shirts will wear black numbers with black and white trim this season in MLB. Previously, it had been reversed.

Bears and Dolphins weren’t the only teams to go without stripes on the new mesh jerseys. The 49ers wore scarlet unis with the same lettering/numbering style as their durene jerseys, only without the three white stripes.
You can see them in the 1973 Miami Dolphins highlight film (Miami hosted the Niners in the ‘73 opener) and in the NFL Films “Lost Treasures” episode “Sundays With Soul,” during an interview with Frank Nunley. Probably the same situation as the Bears/Dolphins – mesh for warm weather, durene for cooler climes (more of the latter at Candlestick, of course).

Maybe it’s been mentioned, but has anyone notice that in Paul’s Meat Bracket the 8th and 9th seeded ‘game’ in the Beef Regional is missing? Obviously (9) BBQ beef ribs is the winner, but I’m curious as to who it beat.
If someone else mentioned this already, feel free to ignore me.

OK, I should have listened to you in the first place and just ignore this list, but since I didn’t, I feel compelled to assess all nine of these.
#9) DePaul: These are so close to being great that it’s kinda frustrating. I love the red and white striped trim. The font for the wordmark and numbers sucks and that little demon head on the shorts is stupid-looking. But those flaws are tolerable.
#8) Indiana: These fall into the category of “so bad that they’re good.” Check that. They’re so awful that they’re sublime.
#7) Syracuse: Kinda nondescript, but inoffensive.
#6) Oregon/#5) Maryland: OK, I’ll give you these. They might just belong on the list.
#4) Tennessee: I’m not crazy about the side panels, but this is another solid uni.
#3) Marquette: Easily one of the best uniforms in college basketball — all four versions. The best part? They play DePaul every year.
#2) Morehead State: The wordmark leaves a bit to be desired, but this is another nice uni.
#1) Not beautiful, but there’s nothing wrong with these at all.

Lee did not hit the shortstop’s ankle, it was his knee.
My thinking is that the World Classic people did not say that teams had to use the cool-flo helmets that we are used to seeing. Instead they probably said “nothing” about helmet safety except for the base coaches. Supposedly each of these helmets does meet some safety standards.
But we have seen helmets shatter by pitched balls, Sammy Sosa.

I should add that the cages are the same for goalies and players- a lot of goalies used player helmets.

I saw that the NFL was going to have throwback games for the old AFL. But somebody said the Broncos did not have white jerseys for that uniform? I am not sure about that statement or not.
This says the Broncos will wear brown and yellow.
But are they wearing the socks?

When are these teams going to get it right? If you’re going to go to all of that trouble and make this a big 50th anniversary season, you should take care of the details.
#197 by Ed E. on 03.25.09 1:43 am |
I believe they gave each team the option to wear “a” uniform from their AFL days – not necessarily the 1960 uni.
The Bills’ 1965 unis are more recognizable than their ’60s togs, which were identical to the Lions’. Same goes for the 1963 Raiders; the 1960-62 version looks more like the Bears. On the other side, the Chiefs and Jets have uniforms that currently resemble their AFL counterparts – hence the ‘62 Dallas Texans and ‘61 NY Titans unis.
Aside from the Chargers, I’d have to say the Broncos’ unis are the ones I’m looking forward to the most. Eagerly awaiting the brown-and-mustard striped socks…

Yep, the Lions logo is one of the best. I’m also a big fan of the color scheme. I played around with the logo and came up with these: Lions logos the one in the middle was not finished.
Anyway, SportsCenter mentioned the Lions toy truck with new logo being pulled from the website.

And I clearly said that it might have been one of the knocks. I didn’t say it was the ONLY knock, nor did I say it was definitely even ONE of the knocks.
Teams move for all sorts of reasons. Skybox economics, parking (e.g., Baltimore Memorial Stadium; which was also in a residential neighborhood) and others. I would say that its very unusual for a stadium to be abandoned for a period of years and then have a NEW stadium built at that very same site.
Miami has a history of trying to revitalize neighborhoods with stadiums/arenas. And to be fair, they’re not the only city that has tried this. IMHO, its a waste of money.
The question was valid. I’m certainly not the only person who has raised the issue.

Toronto’s been known for blue for years: the Jays (formerly Blue Jays) were just the latest team. The Leafs have worn blue and white for 70 years, the Argos are known as the Double Blue. Shoot, even the University of Toronto’s teams are named the Varsity Blues.
Ottawa (red, black and white) and Montreal (bleu, blanc et rouge) are the same.
