Paul, I read your column religiously, and I rspect your opinion, but I respectfully disagree.

When I saw the sox had changed their road uniforms, I winced. I braced myself for the worst. But they're beautiful! So subtle! I've felt the Yanks were somehow better than us for sticking with the simple black-on-gray while we ditched it for red on gray (UGLY). I love the lettering and I love that it's one color (surely you noticed the Yanks went to a white outline...sad).

I like it when a team looks humble on the road. Isn't that how it oughta be?

What is the point of a road alternate jersey anyway (well, other than more sales on Yawkey Way)? It seems rather un-Red Soxlike (or should we expect this in the Trio/Theo era). The alt-hat is nice, but strays from the traditional nature of the Red Sox Uniforms (alt or not). I don't know what to think about the new aways. They have a retro look which is nice but I am worried about the lack of red, which might look odd with red socks (especially knicker style).
bottom line though, no need for change.

1) While totally unnecessary, the new Sox unis look great (except the alts... I don't get the whole let's-wear-our-batting-practice-unis-during-the-real-game thing).

And that's coming from a Yankees fan.

2) Chara is probably wearing the wrist band for sweat.

As mentioned above, many players wear slash guards, but the bands Z is wearing don't look like they have the plastic protectors.

3) I noticed that hockey and lacrosse elbow pads were compared earlier:
Almost all hockey elbow pads have roughly the same amount of protection, covering mid-forearm to mid-bicep. Some are longer or shorter, but that's average.

In lacrosse, most guys I know wear pads tailored to their position.

For instance, when I played defense my freshman year, I went out and brought elbow pads that were basically plastic shells that fit over my elbow caps. I was the one doing the smacking and didn't need much protection, so I got the bare minimum required in the rule book. When my coach moved me to attack last year, I got elbow pads that covered my entire arm, from wrist to upper-bicep, because I was getting slashed a lot. Most guys I know who play midi have about average elbow pads, that are pretty close to the same fit as hockey elbow pads.

4) I think more than one Winter Classic would kind of ruin it.

When you look at the NHL, people rarely even talk about individual playoff games, much less regular season. Games seem to blend together when you talk to the average fan.

Now, if you look at the NFL, it's the exact opposite. Games almost never run together in a fan's head, because the match-ups are win or go home. The Super Bowl is just that - THE Super Bowl. It's not "Game 4 of the 2008 Super Bowl Finals", it's just THE Super Bowl.

This is the equivalent for the NHL, at least from a television perspective. It's one game that everyone will remember. It's on a different day. It's in a different stadium. It's in different sweaters. It's got a completely different look and feel from every other day of the regular season, preseason, training camps, or playoffs.

If you have more than one a year, it loses that special feeling. I'm not even a fan of the Hawks or Wings, but as a hockey fan, I'll damn well be watching, because it only happens once a year.

Beg to differ with you on the lettering on the Red Sox road uniforms. To say that the single color navy on the Red Sox road's is not traditional is a little short sighted. They wore single color navy "Boston" on their roads in 1900, 1901, 1903-1907, 1938-1968, and 1979-1989. That's 49 years of single color navy lettering on the Red Sox road uniform since 1900. Pretty traditional if you ask me.

Man, I can't stop thinking about those late 70s ChiSox uniforms when I look at the new road uniforms. Damn similar (if not exact) font.

I'm off to hit the rack. First good, solid uniwatching session for me, in far too long. It's been a pleasure.

G'night gentlemen.
