I don’t know what the ticket stubs looked like from last Saturday’s Army/Navy game, but I’m willing to bet they didn’t look as cool as any of the ones shown here, here, or here.
Those images come from this auction listing, one of many interesting lots in the recent Mastro Legends auction. Here’s a look at some of the more notable items:
• Gotta love this circa-1900 Notre Dame uniform, complete with noseguard (here’s the full auction listing).
• Would someone at Ebbets Field Flannels or Stahl & Dean or whoever please make a repro of this? I’d buy it in a second (full listing).
• Awesome 1911 U. of Colorado uni here. I love that they threw in the pennant (full listing).
• Man, the AFL’s officials’ jerseys were so damn cool (full listing).
• If there’s one thing this world needs, it’s more sideline capes (full listing). Here’s another (full listing).
• Pretty cool jacket, right? But the real prize is the inner tag. Note the company name — looks like Papa Bear was an early proponent of vertical integration (full listing).
• That same tag design shows up on this 1948 Bears jersey, which has an utterly bizarre 6. Anyone ever seen anything like that before? I haven’t (full listing).
• Check out this unusual facemask placement. I haven’t been able to find an old photo of Jerry Rhome to see if that’s really how he wore his mask during game action — anyone..? (Full listing.)
• Here’s a real prize: a 1938 college all-star jersey (full listing).
• Here’s another college all-star uni (note the sloppy placement of the numerals overlapping the white yoke), circa 1949, only this time the pants are included (full listing). Here’s another, similar vintage. Do those 4s look super-clunky or what? (Full listing.)
• It’s hard to believe, but back in 1963, Oregon looked like this (full listing).
• And finally, one baseball item: If you really want to understand why chain-stitching is called chain-stitching, take a look at this. That’s from this 1935 Honus Wagner jersey (full listing).
Uni Watch News Ticker: Major corporate douchebaggery report from Todd Bellaire, who writes: “I grew up in Detroit (I’m in Texas now) and have been a Wings fan since childhood. My mom asked if I might be interested in any Winter Classic apparel for Christmas. I didn’t want an official jersey, but I appreciate the simplicity of the throwback ‘D’ logo and thought it would look great on a T-shirt. So I explored the NHL site and found this. It looked like exactly what I wanted, except for the ‘Reebok’ in what appears to be 14- or 16-pt type! It was so prominent and offensive to me that I encouraged my mom to forego the present.” … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Great piece here that provides the inside story of Billy Ripken’s “Fuck Face” card. … Jason Bernard just won this Whammy Weenie T-shirt. What’s a Whammy Weenie? Look here. And for an actual Whammy Weenie, look here. … Someone on the Chris Creamer board (which I can’t link to, cuz you have to be registered to access it) has gotten his hands on a Majestic saleman’s sample of a long-sleeve BP jersey, which is fleece-lined. Lots of additional pics here. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: The Ravens’ coaches wore lavender jackets the other day, which is apparently causing a bit of a kerfuffle. … Also from yesterday: Darko Milicic literally tore his jersey off the other night. … Word I hear is that heads are gonna roll in the Nike marketing dept., because they somehow failed to strike a deal with Rod Blagojevich to get a swoosh printed on the Illinois capital dome. … Lots of photos and info from the Lacrosse Coaches’ Convention here (with thanks to Thomas Langan). … Gotta love the Swingin’ A’s. … Color-vs.-color alert! That’s UCLA and Minnesota in the 1962 Rose Bowl (with thanks to Kurt Crowley). … Wait, Nike got some product placement out of the Blagojevich story after all. Everyone’s rehired! … “I recently got a 1976 Yankees program on eBay,” says Neil Berger. “It has a story about the creation of the Yankee tophat logo [look here, here, here, and here]. And there are a few photos of Yankees minor leaguers — probably from Spring Training – show them wearing ‘Yankees’ in block letters (even if the team name wasn’t Yankees — like the Syracuse Chiefs).” … There’s a new-ish book of Phillies photos. Small photo gallery here, and further info here (thanks, Phil). …

The “Colorado” listing is puzzling.
Colorado College (alma mater of Gregg Easterbrook) is a private liberal arts school in Colorado Springs. The Tigers wear black and orange and still compete in big time college hockey.
University of Colorado at Boulder is a Big Twelve school. The Buffs’ colors are silver and gold, but black got thrown in about 50 years ago.
Colorado State University was Colorado A&M when my dad attended and was Colorado Agricultural College prior to that. The Aggies/Rams have always worn green and gold.
Looks like the uniform is probably Colorado College but a Colorado Ag College pennant got thrown in.

I don’t think those Ravens jackets were lavender. They looked grey to me. It’s a glossy material, so maybe that, when surrounded by so many purple accents, made the jacket appear lavender. A lot of other teams were wearing similarly colored puffy jackets this past Sunday. The Jags and Bears coaches both wore grey jackets.

The Bills’ Whammy Weenie was an idea lifted from an old Pittsburgh Pirates tradition in the mid-’60s. Radio guy Bob Prince began touting the “power of the Green Weenie,” which was a phrase used by Pittsburgh trainer Danny Whelan, according to Wikipedia. Some enterprising person manufactured some plastic green weenies with a rattle inside.
The Pirates and Prince failed to trademark the Green Weenie. Not ready for Reebok, apparently.

Not to rehash something that has already been discussed, but I personally was a big fan of the ACU (camo) helmets that were used on Saturday for Army during the Army/Navy game. I may be biased since I was one who actually worked on the helmets and helped keep it a secret, but the thing that will stick out in my head throughout the whole process is how much the players and people involved with the football team LOVED the product! The team could not wait to put on the uniforms in front of America.
For those that are interested, All of the helmets are being auctioned off to the highest bidder. You will be able to find it under the Online Auctions link at http://www.GoArmySpo....

You’re also comparing the immediate result – NHL team vs. AHL team. If such a promotion/relegation system were ever adopted, NHL-ready players who might not get regular playing time at the top level might be more willing to kick some ass in the AHL before being promoted the next season.
Plus promoted teams tend to increase their payroll once they move to a higher division to attract stars. At least that’s how it works in England.
All of this is purely conversational because the U.S. (and Canada) would NEVER adopt a sports model used by another country, much less jolly old England.

I’m pretty sure that complaining about sports franchises instead of complaing about, i dunno, the auto bailout or the continued devaluation of the dollar is all that’s wrong with society. AND there are plenty of folks in NYC who don’t like the Yankees, so calm down there fella.

CC had the chance to say “F— You!” to the ass clowns that are the Yankees, but instead, is becoming one of them today. I blame the MLB players union because they told him if he didn’t take the deal from the Yanks they would be really pissed with him. And put way too much pressure on him.
I know the obvious answer to my question, but when you are making that kind of cash, what is the difference between $110 million, and $161 million? The living costs in New York far exceed those of Milwaukee. The pressure of the New York media is relentless, and the expectations are way too high. In Milwaukee, CC would have been treated like royalty. You have a team in the Brewers who get an entire state excited when they make the playoffs for the first time in 26 years, while the Yankees don’t make the playoffs for the first time since ‘93 and the “world is coming to an end” and it’s the headline in many papers across the country. And God forbid the Yankees haven’t won a World Series in a few years so something must be wrong with the organization, so let’s throw insane amount of cash at the biggest free agents every year just because we can.
*sigh* Sorry, rant over. This of course coming from a disgruntled Brewer fan. This is just the first of many bad things to happen this week. I am sure the Cubs will land a few top free agents this week or next, and then it’s back to fighting for the basement in the NL Central with the Pirates.

One of the reasons a relegation system would never work is business – NHL franchises might not be worth that much compared to MLB or NFL but what would it do to franchise values if there’s a risk that you won’t even be in the NHL anymore? As an NHL owner are you going to spend hundreds of millions on a franchise and arena if you run the risk of having one bad year and going to the minors?
Second business reason – are you going to replace Toronto, Montreal, LA, New York in the NHL with Albany, Moline, Peoria and Des Moines? Not very major league?

First two paragraphs of Olney’s blog sum it up nicely:
“If all goes well with the last bits of negotiation between CC Sabathia and the Yankees, he will receive at least two standing ovations before he throws the first pitch ever at the new Yankee Stadium. The first will come when he walks out to the bullpen for pregame warm-ups, the second when he steps out of the dugout to take the field.
After that, the Yankees and their fans will expect nothing less than greatness. If he delivers anything less than a championship, if he doesn’t win big in October, he will be deemed a failure. Such is the bargain that’s struck when you choose to play in New York.”

So from all of this, I’ll conclude the jacket wasn’t a perfect gray. Anything beyond that is up for grabs.

Huh? It should be so simple. Players are taxed even when they play on the road (in most states), for the money they earn IN THAT STATE. Players’ tax returns are a nightmare. Means, theoretically, they could ask for more stadium money from State Gov’t. Y’know, as in, “It’s there because we play here!”

On the facemask issue: That mask is positioned properly. My Dad used to sell those things, and I wore won in college way back in the 70’s. The one Bradshaw used to wear in the pros and I used to wear had extensions that extended up laterally and across the face opening of the helmet to bolt into either side of the front bumper.

“It should be noted that the Feds apparently offered him some time to get ready so that he could put on a suit for his court appearance. He chose to wear that instead.”
It means he consulted his attorney, who told him what to wear.
If you wear a suit they take away your tie, your belt and your shoelaces, i.e., things that you can use to choke others or yourself, when you are taken to be processed. That means you show up in court with your pants sagging down around your butt. (FYI, this is the genesis of people intentionally wearing their pants around their butt. They are emulating prisoners.)
A good defense lawyer will tell his client to wear an outfit without a belt, etc., that will keep the client warm in what can be a cold holding area, and that the client can easily wash/throw away after use.

BCS ANNOUNCES GERMANY WINNER OF WORLD WAR II !
US Ranked 4th
After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.
” Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into conference play with defeats of Poland , France , Norway , Sweden , Denmark , Belgium and the Netherlands . Their only losses came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work—including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule—our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking.”
Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS commissioner stated “The US only had two major victories— Japan and Germany . The computer models, unlike humans, aren’t influenced by head-to-head contests—they consider each contest to be only a single, equally-weighted event.”
German Chancellor Adolph Hitler said “Yes, we lost to the US ; but we defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks.” Herr Hitler has been criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn ‘style points’ to enhance Germany ‘s rankings. Hitler protested “Our contest with Poland was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional forces.”
The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented ” France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2.”
Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the Philippines .
Sorry about all that other stuff

In my honest, I think the Isles should adopt the 3rd jersey as their primary home jersey, create a similar one for road games, and then be done with the constant jersey tinkering.

I think it was only a one- or two-game thing. And I think it was Bradshaw that sent it to him. Dilfer was catching a lot of guff from Bucs fans for leading an offense that lagged behind their defense, and comparisons had been drawn (by some) to Bradshaw’s early career …

There was an article in one of the New York papers this week that quoted an anonymous “inside source” as saying that if the Yankees pulled the offer, CC’s agent was done. And I’m thinking to myself, the only reason CC originally fielded an offer from the Yankees was so that he could shop it around and see what else he could get. Clearly the Yankees were not his first choice, and this was a tactical ploy by CC and his agent, yet it’s amazing how gloom and doom was predicted for this guy’s career if the Yankees changed their mind, with the thinking being that in effect he would be blowing an extra $40 million for his client(since it was unlikely any other team would top $100 million).
Remember when Tom Hicks was crucified by everyone for bidding against himself to the tune of an extra $100 million in order to sign A-Rod? What the Yankees did is really not that different. They basically bid against themselves by about $60 million in order to get CC. But because it’s, you know, the Yankees, everyone just shrugs their shoulders and chalks it up to the Yankees being the Yankees.
And 7 years? Right now they’re praying that they get a Mussina-type performance from CC instead of Zito……

sure the yanks were bidding against themselves, as was hicks in 00…but that’s the players’ fault?
you wanna fix baseball? you’re never getting a salary cap and the luxury tax is a joke (since the yankees are now obviously printing money…btw…did they sign lowe and burnett yet?)…how about limit an agent’s commission to a SET fee, and not a percentage of the overall take
bet you see a tad more loyalty from players then

Know what? In its own small way that is a truly disturbing development, in what it says about the economy. That league isn’t rich by any means, but it does have enough money to hire some pretty savvy analysts to run a feasibility study in regard to operating in 2009.
I will ask, though, because I don’t know, what is the status of their television package? Can’t take time to read the article right now. If it’s not as healthy as the deals they’ve had in recent years with NBC and ESPN, then maybe I can understand their bailing on this year.
But it’s still really unnerving, either way. It’s one thing for a league to go dark because of lack of interest, but to do so because of the economy? Especially a league that wasn’t doing all that badly, really.
Never, in almost 55 years of following sports, have I heard of such a thing.

That’s exactly it. Unlike some other teams, where a bad signing can set your franchise back for years, the Yankees can just dump the underachiever and plug the hole with the next guy. It’s worked for them thus far because they have always had a core group of guys (Jeter, Posada, Pettitte, Mussina, Rivera) who helped pick up the slack for the bad signings. But now that Pettitte is gone, Mussina is gone, and Posada, Jeter and Rivera are on the downside, or soon to be on the downsides, of their careers, that “strategy” might not work as well.
The Yankees are missing that hunger they once had. What they have now is not hunger, but greed. Avarice. When they were a laughingstock in the 80’s and early 90’s, guys like Gene Michael and Buck Showalter and Joe Torre came in and were hungry to bring pride and prestige back to the Yankees. Which they did, with homegrown talent and shrewd free agent signings (Charlie Hayes anyone? Paul O’Neill? Scott Brosius?). But somewhere along the way they got greedy, and began signing any stiff that they thought could help them win another title. And the obsession with titles began to cloud their vision of how their franchise should be run.
And now you have Hal, Hank and Brian, guys who enjoyed the spoils from the moves that their predecessors made, and don’t want to get evicted from the penthouse, and keep tossing money around in an attempt to stay there. I personally thought that Cashman’s original intent, in giving his young pitchers time to develop to let the team build for the future again through homegrown players, was the right move, but apparently the horror of missing the playoffs for the first time in over a decade seems to have forced them to abandon that plan, if the CC signing and all the talk about signing Burnett (Carl Pavano II), Lowe and/or Sheets is any indication of the direction the club is moving in.
I’m sure it’s been pointed out before, and it will continue to be pointed out, but if your team has the highest payroll in baseball, and has just signed the top free agent pitcher on the market, and still feels that it needs to sign 2-3 more pitchers in order to be competitive against a team with a fraction of your payroll, then there’s something wrong and you are flat out not doing your job.

And just the other day, didn’t the Houston Comets fold cuz couldn’t find a buyer? No matter what you think about the WNBA, it just isn’t a good sign when teams that could at least function now start disappearing because the economy sucks.

OK. An end to the “lavender” jacket debate. This just popped up on baltimoresun.com:
So what is the truth? According to Ravens Director of Media Relations Chad Steele — who emailed me to clear things up — they’re all silver.
Kevin and Candus,
Just wanted to drop you a quick note in regards to your “Faceoff” yesterday about the coaches jackets on Sunday. Our coaches sideline jackets are silver, not lavender. From what I understand on some TV sets they looked lavender, but on others, they do look their true color. As an aside, the franchises do choose the color of their sideline gear, Reebok designs the apparel as far as color and style and the organizations just order the amount of what styles they receive.

The thing about the Yankees is that they are greedy. They have 26 championships, right? They missed the playoffs this year for the first time since 1993 and all the Yankees fans are pissed off about it, while over in Milwaukee, they make the playoffs, and it connects an entire state. The thing with big markets and big money is that, in my opinion, it makes the team, owners, fans greedy and have the “championship or nothing” motto. One team is not going to win it every year. And that is what makes winning a championship so special, that it doesn’t happen all the time. But, the Yankees, along with some other teams go by the golden rule…”he who has the gold, rules”.
The Yankees aren’t done with free agency. And by the start of the season they will have accumulated an All-Star team. If the Yankees want to buy a championship, just let them have one and don’t bother playing the games.

-Being a die-hard Yankee fan, I’m loving all the Yankee hate on this site, makes me feel all warm inside. Bottom line is that the Yankees are playing within the system, and not breaking any rules. I am concerned about the length of the CC deal, but the team needed a solid starter that badly. As for the whole “loyalty” thing, well not too sound crass but welcome to the 21st century. The only real loyalty in sports anymore is from a fan to their team, players (for the most part) are hired guns. You can debate until the cows come home on whether that’s good or bad, but it’s true.

Not that I’m defending the Yankees, but that’s what rich people do. They couldn’t care less about the little guy until it starts to affect them. That’s when they suddenly decide to find religion and push for fiscal responibility.
Look at the auto industry or the banking industry. While thousands of auto workers were laid off and thousands of people lost their houses because of subprime mortgages, the fat cats in charge of the Big Three and the banks just sat back, enjoyed their salaries and the various perks of their lifestyles, and basically didn’t give a crap that the little guys were suffering. But once the very real threat of bankruptcy loomed and losing their jobs and the perks associated with it became a possible reality, the rich guys ran to Capitol Hill with hands outstretched crying poverty. And in private jets and $2000 suits, no less.
The Yankees don’t care what you think. They don’t care that the average customer is priced out of their new stadium. They don’t care that the neighborhood kids don’t have ballfields to play on because they took the land and now aren’t exactly in a rush to build replacement fields for them like they said they would. They don’t care that they are spending the GDP of a small nation on C(rispy) C(reme) Sabathia. They don’t care. Unless and until people don’t start showing up to the stadium , people don’t buy Yankee merchandise, people don’t pay $8 for a beer, what the average fan thinks about the fiscal irresponsibility of their spending is of little to no concern to them. As long as they rake in the dough, and people continue paying for whatever product they put out on the field, they’ll continue spending (wasting?) more and more money.
The payroll will eventually hit $300 million, and the Yankees will just chalk it up to the cost of doing business and take their lumps in the media. Why? Because someone out there will pay for it and continue paying whatever it costs to go a game. And until someone draws a line and says “no, we’re not going to subsidize this anymore” and hurts the Yankees where it counts the most, in their collective pockets, it will remain that way.

The problem is that with the Yankees, either through their spending, attitude of the front office, various soundbites from George and Hank, attitudes of the fans, whatever, the prevalent frame of mind amongst the Yankees and their followers is that making the playoffs is not enough. It has to culminate in a championship or else the season is considered a disappointment. I am of your thinking, that anytime a team makes the playoffs the season should be considered a success, but the reality is that this holds true for 99% of the teams in baseball. And then there’s the Yankees. For the Yankees, a championship is the only way to define success.
No one is saying that the Yankees, or Sawx, or Cubbies, or anyone should stop trying. Far from it. What I think irks a lot of people is that the Yankees last season wasted no time in telling the world that the recent Yankee mode of doing business i.e. throwing cash at the hottest free agents and hoping to get out of the first round of the playoffs wasn’t working, and now they were going to go with their young pitchers and ,while they would suffer some growing pains at first, in the long run it would be the best thing for the franchise. Then they miss the playoffs. So what do they do the following year? Fiscal responsibility and future prosperity be damned. Let’s just open up the wallet and throw money at the hottest free agent. And while we’re at it, let’s throw money at all of the hot free agent pitchers. Phil Who? Ian What? Joba Where? Youth movement? What’s that?
Like I said before, everyone ridiculed and absolutely destroyed Tom Hicks when he bid against himself to sign A-Rod. One of the reasons cited was that A-Rod was not going to singlehandedly solve all his team’s problems. So now the Yanks sign Sabathia, and the first thing that the area papers and ESPN mention after the signing is that (a) they bid against themselves to sign him, and (b) Sabathia is not going to singlehandedly solve all the team’s problems. I know for a lot of Yanke fans that jumped on the “Tom Hicks is an idiot” bandwagon when he signed A-Rod, yet I guarantee you they’ll just shrug their shoulders with the CC signing and defend it as the Yankees doing what they have to do to win. Which is an absurd notion, because the Yankees have been doing nothing but winning for the last decade.
I agree that MLB’s problems run deeper than the way the Yankees spend their money. In fact, the Hicks signing did a helluva lot of damage to MLB. But by that same token, no one can sit there and say that what the Yankees are doing isn’t hurting baseball either. Because when there’s a term for what the Yankees do, “Yankee money”, and every major free agent declaration is met with “well, he’s going to have to decide whether he’s going to take Yankee money or settle for another team’s offer”, there’s a problem.

The first $1M/yr player was actually Pete Rose, in 1979, when he signed a 5-yr contract with the Phillies. (That’s $2.8M/yr in inflation-adjusted 2007 dollars)
However, Dave Winfield signed a 10 yr/$21M contract with the Yankees in 1981, making him the first $2M/yr player. (That’s $4.5M/yr in inflation-adjusted 2007 dollars).

anyone consider maybe the chicago bulls symbol may be recognized worldwide?
when jordan was in his hayday, clearly the best basketball player in the world, he had to be everywhere. i don’t know anything about the subject but i’m just speculating
thoughts?

Pete Rose’s contract in 1979 was 4 years for $3.2m (the biggest salary ever to that date but not a million dollars per year)
According to Baseball Almanac, the first million dollar player was Nolan Ryan in 1979.

thats exactly the thought process that went through the yankees’ collective minds as they signed a free agent baseball player. “lets say fuck you to everyone in the country because we depend on them spending the money they dont have anymore to come see our spectacle.”
look, i hate the yankees too. i hate the excesses, i hate the bidding against themselves, i hate how they buy the entire free agent market when they can. but lets be serious. they arent trying to say “fuck you” to the common man. they are doing what they do every offseason. why is this a surprise to anyone? they went after the biggest name on the list. its what the yankees have done since the seventies (or 1918, if youre a sawx fan). this is nothing new. and it gets the same angry response every year.
and as for wanting cc to turn down the yankees because its the “right thing to do” and because they are “the evil empire,” thats a bit of a stretch. this is baseball. no one lives or dies because of the yankees (no one sane, anyway). yes the very name “yankees” is ripe with excess, but do you really think when a deal is on the table a player stops and says to himself “people think this is the evil empire im signing with… should i think of them instead of my playing career?” no. why would they? cc was a free agent in a job market and a very good job opportunity with amazing pay was offered to him. i cant blame him for a second for taking that opportunity.

Thanks for the clarification. I figured it may be a pop/soda regional thing. Which I guess it sort of is, on more of an international scale.

Settle down, dude. The CC signing just proves the Yankees have learned nothing in the past few years. If they think CC will still be worth $23 mill in 7 years when he’s 35 and pushing 4-bills they will be in for a rude awakening. And check out his career playoff stats. Yikes!

As a Bears season ticket holder, I’d like to see some of those injured Caps get healthy so they can return those players back to Hershey.
I don’t think the Bears, much as I like them, would be able to keep up that 4+ goals per game average in the show.

I’m still contemplating how many pinstripes there’ll be around each thigh of Sabbathia’s pantlegs. Gotta be a Yankee record.
But that’s just me. LOL

Concerning the Yanks offseason moves, the sons are behaving like Dad. Spend too much money on free agents, ( CC, D-Lowe? Burnett? Petite? Sheets?)All too old/injuries to be getting those long contracts. Go Sox, Go Nats

Interesting fact here, the ECHL is mandating a jersey switch, as displayed in the FAQs.
When is the jersey reversal date?
ECHL teams will wear their white jerseys from Oct. 17-Jan. 20 and their dark jerseys from Jan. 25-Apr. 4.

At first, I read that comment and thought, “What? Jersey switch? More EDGE shenanigans?” But after re-reading it, and thinking about the FAQ, you probably meant to say that the ECHL goes “white at home” for the first half of the year, and goes “colored at home” the second. Right?

Archie is *not* f***ing Mr. Weatherbee!
Wow, Chasing Amy being quoted on UniWatch.
Talking about pink going too far, if you turn on ESPN2 for the National Finals Rodeo, apparently it’s pint shirt night at the NFR. Just a strange sight seeing a bunch of cowboys wearing pink shirts, and some even have pink chaps on.
No pics yet, but I’m sure their web site will have some tomorrow.

It’s not only the amount of the pinstripes, Ricko. The guy is also, like, 6′7″ so the overall length of the pinstripes, if laid end to end, could possibly reach his hometown in Northern California.
