thats not really what i meant. im going to watch it for the hockey. im going to watch it because outdoor hockey is one of the most fun things i have ever participated in. im going to watch it because i love the sport and want to see two quality teams play in kick-ass uniforms at one of the most famous ballparks in history.
but think about it. what if, as someone is scrolling through the channels new years day and going past numerous bowl games, they hear about this promotion and decide to watch. maybe they really enjoy the game and begin to tune in more often. imagine this happens 3-4000 times over. all of a sudden the nhl starts to get a little more of a fanbase.
i know its ridiculous to suggest that that would happen, and im totally aware that that is certainly not reebok’s main goal in the promotion. im just saying that a promotion during a hockey game isnt the evil demon seed it seems to have been made out to be earlier. thats all i was saying.
fair points all

i grew up without cable, and my only exposure to hockey was the islanders and rangers, maybe once or twice a month, on WOR channel 9 in new york (always away games -- one reason why i've never been all that keen on the 'return to the dark sweaters'...my home team was always in white, and i NEVER got to see those games unless i WENT to those games)

but there were no gimmicks needed to get me into the game...i'll tell you what DID get me into puck, and one thing i've always hated the NHL and the europeans for ... fights ... or more specifically, lack of them now...and everyone has helmets

yeah...call me a caveman, but there was always something great about watching the isles against the broadstreet bullies, or anyone against tiger williams...more like slap shot, less like the mighty ducks

but this reebok thing has really got me pissed off...they DON'T need a gimmick for this game...other than that its (1) OUTDOORS, (2)IN WRIGLEY, with (3) two of the original six, (4) in throwback sweaters

now, if that doesn't appeal to the casual hockey fan, i don't know what will...the purist is already all over this game

if the NHL's goal is to increase viewership, this game ALONE should be able to do it...the 'potential new fan' doesn't need to spend his new year's day afternoon juggling back and forth between bowl blowouts and leftover party snax to search for a fucking missing rbk logo...how's that going to increase one's thirst for hockey?

we debated last new years day whether or not it was even good for hockey to have the pens and slugs wear their throwbacks, because "the first time watcher will want to buy (or see) those sweaters again and they can't even do that"...as much as we here would love for the uniforms to be the reason we watch a game (or attend the U of Zero), and make no mistake, marketing is a huge part of it, the first time watcher (which is im guessing the NHL's true target) isn't going to watch or not watch a hockey game a second time <i>solely because</i> of the unis

so, after all that babbling (sorry)...i just feel that this whole rbk gimmick is bullshit, unnecessary and an utter waste of our time...you want me to watch hockey? put it on a real network (like NBC), maybe in prime time (i think canada may do that), and let them fight!

but please don't ask me to find <strike>waldo</strike> the missing rbk logo
Well I think the point is not to draw in any more fans because as you said the game in and of itself is enough to draw most every hockey fan whether they are die-hard or casual, rather the point is to associate reebok with the beautiful product (throwback jerseys) you are seeing on the ice. Now as many have said, most canadians are already quite aware of reebok's monopoly on hockey but seeing as this game is going to be the only nationally broadcast game in the US, where you finally have all american eyes on you at a single moment, you'll have an entire resource which the NHL claims in under-tapped to manipulate. And you know what? It is going to work. I hate capitalism as a rule and corporatations deperately trying to steal your money but I've come to accept that this is the society we live in. The trick is to simply ignore the advertisments. I've gotten pretty good at it myself (thanks in part to not owning a television) but I'll never be perfect because we're in a zoo and the corporatations have branded the bars.

Hey Paul

Go ahead and watch the Doritos or All-State or whatever lame sponsored bowl game is on New Year's day . . . Oh, I forgot, the big(?) one's televised a week later. Oh, that's right -- it's for a MYTHICAL CHAMPIONSHIP since the NCAA doesn't believe in a playoff system due to all the $$$$$$ these schools receive from all these hugely-sponsored, TV-rated games.

Hypocrite!

The Clippers are overhauling their looks to go along with a move to a new (long overdue) stadium this spring. They're also the Indians' new AAA outpost and the old Clips unis still had a distinct Yankee flavor even after a few seasons as the Nationals' affiliate.

I hate the Cavs-style "C" and I wish they'd used the script C from the Tribe's road jersey instead.
I'm shcoked!!! 200 comments and yet nobody has pointed out that NEITHER OF THE WINTER CLASSIC SWEATERS ARE THROWBACKS! BBoth are retro inspired, but both team have never worn them before and to me, both are far worse than the original 6 old school designs that they are inspired by. You want to complain about marketing, why aren't you complaining about this? It's a total excuse to sell a new jersey, instead of the old school version which people already have
Wait, what? There are a few minor differences- Wings added their logo as a shoulder patch and the Blackhawks changed the shade of tan a little, but They're accurate otherwise except for the modern material.

And nobody owns those jerseys. Both were used way back before merchandise sales and this is the first time they've been seen since. But both teams wore those uniforms in the past.

That's the Spring Training 5950 that the Yanks wore at VaTech this year.

Methinks he has a mancrush on Mike Vick. As I said last week, after he was sent up the river and Nike ripped all of the Zoom Vick 5's off of the shelves, he was the lone player to remain wearing those cleats in the NFL.
Plax grew up a big VT fan and would have gone to Tech had we offered him a scholarship, but we didn't have the room for him.

He's from the same area of Virginia as the Vick brothers and Allen Iverson. Its no surprise he's a VT fan, even with his Michigan State education.
