Thanksgiving was a serious feast, thanks in large part to the perfectly bronzed bird cooked and carved by my friend Scout. There were lots of other good dishes, including several made by Collateral Gammage and myself, but I was too busy eating, drinking, and yakking to take any more photos. Which is probably just as well, since I for one can’t even bear to think about food today, much less look at it. And that’s the sign of a successful Thanksgiving, am I right? — Paul

Close up it looks like field greens with either apples or pears with some sort of candied nuts (most likely peacans). Might be some leeks or other type of onion as well. Dressing looks like a light oil based one.
From a distance it looked like Japanese seaweed salad. You need to close up on the pic.

The new Nike Experience store finally is open at Mall of America, right across the freeway from my office. I’ll check it out for you. Probably not until next week, though, because they’re expecting 200,000 shoppers at MOA Friday (some stores opening at 5 a.m.; the rest at 6) and I’m sure the weekend will be a zoo, too.

It was a big controversial thing in the burgh when it first happened. A lot of alumni hated the idea of not only tearing down Pitt Stadium but moving the field off campus. However, the rebirth of the baseketball program and the beautiful Petersen Events Center being built on the site where the stadium used to stand, combined with the football program’s ability to share not only a pro stadium but workout facilities as well with the Steelers has outweighed the negatives.
There are still those that poo poo them playing off campus at Heinz Field but I think more accept it now. My brother for one, was a hardcore anti-Heinz Field move but now he’s cool with it.
I don’t think Heinz Field itself is a very good stadium, but it’s the fact that they share the practice complex with the Steelers that makes it such a draw for college kids. That is a world class facility.
I’m apathetic to being on campus or off. The years I went to games at Pitt Stadium, the program sucked. Therefore, my memories are bad. My brother, on the other hand, was at Pitt during a good era and at the height of the end of the series with Penn State (not counting that mini-series in the late 90s). I’m sure that’s why his feelings were different.
As an alum and season ticket holder, I’m much more passionate about the school going back to the old PITT script and colors.

It’s apparently a good thing for today’s fractured society that people eat at different times.
My cousin’s girlfriend said yesterday that our dinner (which was a 2:30) was the first of FOUR she had to go to yesterday. His father and mother, her father and mother.
I guess that means lots of grazing and no real eating, so you have room for something at every place.

Growing up, my maternal grandmother always hosted Thanksgiving and we ate at a traditional lunch time. I guess anywhere between noon and two.
Once my grandmother became to old to host, we hosted those grandparents at my parents house and kept the same timeframe even after my grandparents had both passed on.
I was lucky when I met my wife because her family did Thanksgiving at more of a traditional dinner time, say between five and seven. So, as we dated through last year, we always had lunch time at my mom’s and dinner time at her mom’s or sister’s. Although it seems crazy to eat two thanksgiving dinners, it actually was nice because we didn’t fill up at either place, just ate sparingly in the afternoon so we had room in the evening.
Yesterday, we combined the families for the first time and ate around 5:30. I’m happy to say that 14 people (including four kids) and a four month old puppy all had a great day and our humble abode survived!
The moral of the story: there is no “right” time to eat Thanksgiving dinner, so long as your with loved ones and can count your blessings!!!!

We ate at just after noon, mainly because my kids had to be with my me (and my girlfriend and her kids) for part of the day, then with their mother the second part of the day. their mother had dinner at 5ish, so they got two for one.
on top of that, it was my son’s 13th birthday…pumpkin pie and birthday cake.

my thanksgiving at the nursing home was officially “noon”…it was “dinner” and we were served “stuffing”…i was able to watch some of the lions
gameslaughter with my dad in his room, the din drowned out only slightly by an alzheimers’ patient ‘left’ in the hallway screaming “BUNNY” for 2 hours…good times good timesmy second thanksgiving was a third “seating” in a restaurant (5:00 pm)…it was also “dinner” and what was called ’stuffing’ seemed like low-grade cream of wheat
/i never thought i’d say this, but i actually miss the two thanksgivings i’d have to endure with my ex-wife and her family (always first) followed by a late supper at my folks…at least by the second one we were always happily lubricated

I’m from NY, but spent 8 years in Seattle for grad school and had school mates from all over the US. We had the discussion of ’sauce’ vs. ‘gravy’ all the time and one of my buddies’ grandpa, from Minnesota, settled it for us…
- If it has meat in it, or is made from the fat or grease from meat, it is gravy.
- If there is no meat, then it’s sauce.
- It doesn’t matter what it goes ON, it’s what goes IN that’s important.

Wisconsin men’s hockey is wearing a new third sweater tonight. It’s streaming online, so I can’t get a screen grab – I’ll post picture links after the game.
It’s all red with a large Bucky head in the middle and large Badgers written in white block letters. There’s a graphic repeated along the bottom seam – I thought it was Motion W’s, but now it’s looking like Bucky head outlines.

I was amazed how much USF has changed in the 8 years I was in the Army. When I left USF was still probably 90/10 commuter to resident student. I enlisted in USF’s second Football season. That is the only major change to the school… I think.

Nav-Marine Corp Stadium (Home of the Midshipmen) is about a mile off of the Naval Academy in Annapolis. They close off street for the Midshipmen March.

Boston Latin-Boston English. It’s bad enough Latin’s colors are purple and white, but they had to introduce a BLACK jersey? Which is worse, all purple, or black trimmed in purple when black isn’t even one of your colors?
And the Celtics need to ditch the alts.

Not uni but field related. watching the ASU-UCLA game and noticed that instead of little arrows pointing towards the endzone at the yardage numbers, ASU has little pitchforks.

I was at the Badger Hockey game tonight. The repeating item around the bottom is the badger claw footprint logo. I thought it was a pretty sharp jersey, but it could have used some sleeve striping or something. It felt a little plain to me. The numbers looked good, even with the subtle black drop shadow.

It would have been a lot cheaper to put a dome over Pitt Stadium, put actual seats in everywhere and keep the football team on campus. But that would just make too much sense.

I’m sorry, but that’s not a pattern that you can use for a hemline. You need something geometric and repeating to pull that off.

Which kind of makes me wonder…how did MSU get away with the monopoly on the simple block “S” and letting everyone refer to them as “State”?
I mean, they go by simply “State” on their b-ball jerseys, no “Michigan” modifier needed…and when they did have both “Michigan” and “State” on the jersey in 2000, the national championship year, the “Michigan” print was really tiny.
And all the other big D-I “State” schools always, ALWAYS use another modifier when abbreviating: K-State, OKState, NC State, Penn State, etc. MSU is the only one, it seems, that people just call “State” on a national level (ie, on Sportscenter highlights and such).
I’m a pretty big MSU fan but for some reason I’ve always wondered why they were the first ones to think of using the block “S” and why whenever anyone sees a block “S” they think of MSU (and vice versa)…
