Consider me a chump: I only eat the white meat. The dark meat on turkey and chicken is too greasy.
And it’s stuffing, always and everywhere. Dressing, as Stuby points out, is for salads.
Are the Lions going to wear throwbacks today? From the footage ESPN just showed, it looks like they haven’t gone old school on Thanksgiving since ‘04 (?), wearing either their regular uniforms or their black alts the last three seasons.

my understanding is that the Lions WILL be wearing their throwback uniforms with the logo-less helmets. They also wore them for the game on Nov 9 against Jacksonville when they unveiled the all-time time at halftime as part of their 75th season in Detroit. Also, Corey Schlesinger will be the Lions’ honorary captain today.

Yes, the Lions suck but so what, it’s their tradition to play on Turkey Day. And think of all the people that wouldn’t have seen Barry Sanders in action if not for that game. I could give a shit about the Seahawks/Cowboys game but I do like watching the Cardinals since I’m a big Larry Fitzgerald fan.
I get tired of hearing Mike Greenberg use the Mike and Mike show as a platform to get the Lions off Thanksgiving. He’s been on it for like three years now. Can’t they just have their day? I mean it’s tradition. Plus, with the NFL Network, the league can schedule a third game sans the Lions or Cowboys so win-win.

– Man, the Lions suck. I can’t believe the Bears almost lost to them at home. (The blowout in Detroit was nice, though).
– Fortunately, I do get the NFL Network (Thanks, Directv), so I’ll get a chance to watch the Cards-Eagles (another blackout – didn’t the Eagles see what happened to Georgia when they did that?). you know… all this discussion about dressing and stuffing makes me think of what regional differences might exist in the dish. how do you make yours? what all is in it? is it cooked inside or outside the bird?
mine (which is my great grandmothers recipe via my mother):
Outside the bird!
cornbread based
we put in apples, pecans, craisins, jalepenos, etc…
we also make little pancakes out of some of it fo some family members… it turns out really crispy and wonderful to make a sandwich with cranberry sauce and turkey between two dressing pancakes. :-D

Ex-pat/McGill University student checking in from Montreal. I’m as tired and busy as hell, it’s snowing, and it doesn’t feel a bit like Thanksgiving up here, but I’m thankful for Tim Horton’s coffee to keep me upright, not having to watch the Lions, the Jets doing well (for the moment), and my band, after a successful recording session last night. And of course the UW reader base. I learn a lot, see cool details, and enjoy “congregating” here.
Hope my turducken burgers come out well. First time I’ve been involved in the Thanksgiving cooking process. (My roommate is American too, so we’ll do the best we can…)

Why did teams start to deviate from throwbacks on Thanksgiving? It seems like it was just a few years ago when all four teams did so. Now it just looks weird seeing the Lions’ throwback against the Titans’ futuristic jerseys.

What’s all this whining I see about some NFL channel? Right now the Lions game is on CBS and the other game is listed as being on Fox at 3. The Lions look more dull than the Giants in their home jersey. The Lions should add some weird silver/white striping, similar to the mid-60’s Eagles, and just explain it as a jersey from an earlier era, like the 30’s. Don’t think anyone would care, since it’s the Lions, but they’d look neat.

It’s a Michigan tradition that predates the NFL Network, the Nielson Ratings and most of the teams in the National Football League.
I’m very sorry about the rant, but this is really getting to me. I do wholeheartedly wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, no matter what you are doing today.

If I may, let me add a THIRD option to the stuffing-dressing debate.
Here in Central PA, it’s roughly a 60-40 split between stuffing and….FILLING.
Pretty much nil on it being called dressing in these parts.
As far as the Lions go, they could go to an all BLACK look and be accurate for a throwback for a future turkey day venture. In 1948 Bo McMillen was coach, he came from Indiana U. and supposedly introduced an all black for the Hoosiers. For a game the Lions played 10/17/1948 at Wrigley Field against the Bears, the Lions wore all black. Helmet, jersey, pants. No lie. Anyone with on-line access to the Chicago Tribune should be able to verify this. I no longer have access.

Well, that is the non-scientific divide discovered in arguments I had with my friends at Thanksgiving during uni.

I will tell you they were (and still are) one of the great looking NFL unis ever. I remember being really disappointed when then went to, basically, what they’re wearing now (first version of the silver helment/silve blue pants uni had three sleeve stripes and sock stripes, btw). Not that the new ones were bad, but the originals, with that unique shoulder treatment, really looked fabulous. I never heard why they changed, but I’ve always figured maybe they thought the first unis were too “Colts” or something.

For a few years, the NFL even modified its homepage to show old-style logos for all the teams during Thanksgiving week, even though only the teams who played on Thanksgiving actually wore throwbacks. I liked that touch.
Taking away Thanksgiving Day from the Lions would be like forcing the Reds to open on the road or making the Red Sox play away from Boston on Patriots Day.

I was thinking about that. The Cowboys blew out the Seawhawks, and no one is suggesting the Cowboys lose the traditional Thanksgiving Day gig because they’re likely to clobber someone, making for an equally lousy game to watch.
I mean, according the basic principles of “Logic 101″, if one extreme is an issue, its opposite must be, too.

In all the 30 plus years that I have watched the Detroit Lions I have never seen them play as poorly as they did today. They are an embarassment to the NFL and the city of Detroit. I don’t think that the NFL will eliminate the Thanksgiving game in Detroit. It would cause a huge uproar (something the Lions can’t do) from fans. What they could do is switch the opponents the Lions and Cowboys play. A Titans-Cowboys match up would have great to see and the Lions-Seahawks would have been more evenly matched.
It is kind of sad that the people of Michigan continually support the Lions in such great numbers. They love the home team, no matter what. Too bad the Ford family doesn’t respond to this loyality by fielding a decent team. With the continuing demise of the American auto industry, the loyality of Detroit fans is both admirable and a little pathetic.
The Fords need to sell the Lions to an owner like Mike Illitch, who could hire the right people, as he did for the Tigers and Red Wings, and then leave them alone.
Dressing is stuffing if you bake it in the turkey.

A bit of Thanksgiving nostalgia (and wishful thinking), if I may…
Fifty years ago, the only games on Thanksgiving were the Packers-Lions and Texas-Texas A&M. Always. My earliest memories of football on TV, in fact. In believe the ‘56 game was the first nationally televised regular-season NFL game.
Then along came the AFL in 1960, which early-on began scheduling TWO games on Thanksgiving, one on the east coast (Titans, maybe?) and one in Denver, which doubled the number of games and really began turning Thanksgiving football into what it has become.
The Dallas game was added in ‘67, I believe, and for many, many years the opponent always was the Redskins…and the games usually were frickin’ great. So, most of the time, were the Packers-Lions games because, even if one of the teams were bad, the old rivalry kicked in.
When the two leagues merged fully in 1970, the idea of rotating opponents began, first for the Lions (I think it was the Raiders who were the first non-Packer team to get that game). Washington stayed the Cowboy opponent for awhile, though, giving us memories like the Clint Longley game in the 70’s…but eventually that went away, too.
I suppose the theory was to attract different TV markets.
The trouble with rotating, though, is that once in awhile you’re gonna get a team riding high playing a team that’s sucking wind. Okay, so the Lions suck a LOT of wind lately, but had the natural rotation put, say, the Rams or Niners in Detroit today, it might have been a far better game than what we got.
My idea: Go back to Packers-Lions and Redskins-Cowboys—always—and let the rivalries drive the excitement. The NFL, you would think, is smart enough to realize those games attract audiences nationwide.
Problem is, that elminates the AFC. Fine, let it all hang out and schedule, say, the Chiefs in Oakland and the Jets in Miami every Thanksgiving Day/Night, too. Have the games start at noon, 3, 6 and 9 EST. What the hell, most of the country’s off Friday, anyway.
Nah, they’d never do it. Makes too much sense.
And the women of America would revolt.
Okay…who today heard at least once, “Isn’t there something on besides football?”

Apparently, the first coach to initiate this policy was Alvin “Bo” McMillin at Indiana. McMillin, a great offensive innovator, won the Big Ten championship in 1945 running a trick combination T-Single Wing offense with an unbalanced line. In 1946 Indiana used a model which was a round, smooth plastic helmet to facilitate the identification of eligible pass receivers. McMillin had the ends and backs helmets painted red, the tackles, guards and center wore black.
Indiana’s school colors are cream and crimson. McMillin, however, always dressed his varsity in black. The pants, jerseys and helmets were solid black with red jerseys sometimes being used. White jerseys were sparingly introduced after World War II.
The color combination of red for eligible pass receivers, and black for interior lines was used in 1946 and 1947 at Indiana. McMillin left Indiana in 1948 to coach the Detroit Lions of the NFL and he kept this same red/black concept, abandoning the traditional Honolulu blue and silver colors of the Lions. Detroit wore the same black pants with the black/red jerseys and helmet identification. He also ran the unbalanced line, Single Wing-T offense…

As much as I almost lost my lunch today by watch that Detroit game. I do think it’s about time they change the lineups. Granted I remember growing up and watching some fairly good Lions games…ie. vs. Chicago, Minnesota, back in the day. There day is done. How about a Super Bowl rematch or the losers of the AFC/NFC championship from the year before? Or how about some GOOD RIVALRIES…ie..Dallas vs. Wash or NYG, Pitt vs. Cleve, GB vs Chi, etc…give them a 2 year contract playing at each others stadium, and then pick 2-3 games for the next 2 years? SOunds good to me!

That’s kinda what I meant. You aren’t locked into traditional Thanksgiving NFL matchups because you’ve never seen any, and that’s too bad. I was trying to give a bit of historical context and perspective that such games generally made for better viewing.
You mention NCAA games that are true traditional rivalries. But the NFL has taken the fun out of that…by eliminating it. Can’t build much of a rivalry if you have to ask, “Who’s our ‘traditional Thanksgiving opponent’ this year?”
And I meant air my mythical late games where they’d be available to a larger audience, not the NFL Private Channel (How much longer is the NFL gonna cling to an idea that shows no real evidence of catching on, btw?).

family from mid-atlantic (PA to VA) and various members have used all three terms stuffing/dressing/filling interchangeable (except it’s always oyster dressing).
but for what it’s worth the term dressing is just a late 19th century Victorian era construct because stuffing was thought to be too sexual.
