Time to continue our look through the Life photo archives, this time focusing exclusively on baseball. Just like last time, I’m linking to smaller versions of the pics so you can see the captions, but you should click on each photo to see the larger versions. Let’s get started:
• Here’s Stan the Man announcing his retirement. What is that around his neck — kinda looks like one of those Cub Scouts neckerchiefs, no?
• Spectacular, and not just because of the awesome sock stripes. Look at the composition, the framing — really great photo.
• The archive features a mother lode of photos showing the Hollywood Stars’ shorts, most of which I hadn’t seen before. Dozens of additional examples, including some that show a player sliding (and the effects thereof), here.
• You know, sometimes advertising on uniforms doesn’t bother me at all. And hey, at least one of those jerseys was ironed by mom. There’s even a sequence that shows the kid putting it on.
• Lots of good women’s baseball pics. I’m particularly fond of this one and this one, but also look here, here, here,
• Remember my recent post about uni-clad scarecrows? Here’s a vaguely related photo.
• So many great details to savor in this shot: The thin, graceful lettering, the texture of the various fabrics, the stitching on the seams, the way the pinstripes on the collar placket don’t match up with the pinstripes on the body (this was intentional, to give the placket its own visual identity), the top button of the undershirt peeking out, etc. Gorgeous.
• There are sandlots and then are, like, really sandy lots.
• No post-game buffet spread can match up to this. Note that the shop sells patent medicine, jeepers!
• Jackie Robinson, card shark. And Satchel Paige, pool shark. Plus Satch played the guitar and piano.
• This is odd — why is the rubber so close to the edge of the mound, instead of in the center? (Update: Several readers have now pointed out that this must have been a small-ish bullpen mound.)
• Awesome detail here: Note the little “44″ on the undershirt placket. Don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. Can’t tell if the guy in the background has a number on his undershirt as well.
• Wish my Little League had something as cool as this. Here’s how it turned out.
• Look how those stripes just pop out of the haze. Magnificent.
• Although it’s hard to tell in a black-and-white shot, I’m pretty sure the guy with his back to the camera is wearing one of the Dodgers’ old blue satin uniforms. And several of the guys in the audience are wearing the satin whites (discernable by the shoulder piping).
• Good view here of the memorial left-armhole band that the Reds wore in 1961 for owner Powel Crosley. Instead of removing it the following year, they simply added a corresponding band to the other side.
• Speaking of the Reds, it’s always good to see more shots of Big Klu in action.
• Look at Frank Robinson’s left stirrup in the lower-right corner of this 1961 shot. Looks like he was already adding fabric to his stirrups at that early date (as he clearly did later on with the Orioles).
• Love the uni-numbered wooden boxes above each locker.
• Not sure what I like best about this shot — the cigarette, the pay phone in the background, the unbuckled belt, or the fact that this is how Birdie Tebbetts spent his time between games of a twinbill.
• What’s the deal with this jersey lettering?
• Check out the embroidery on the grounds crew shirts.
• Man, the Phillies sure had some giant uni numbers. Plus they had some super-cool spring training signage.
• Hand-numbered stirrups alert!
• Double-cap alert!
• Someone get Honus Wagner a new belt.
• What’s that little strip of tarp outside the third base line? Also, why did the fans sitting way out in the right field seats need to be protected by a screen?
• This had to have been staged, right? And even if it was, it’s still hard to fathom.
• Man, I’d give anything to be at this bar.

First, the Canadiens retired Patrick Roy’s number, so they wore a commemorative patch and, interestingly, didn’t wear the centennial and all-star patches they’ve been wearing all season. … Meanwhile, the Leafs honored Wendel Clark, so they did the pregame thing where everyone dressed up as him and then throwbacks with a special patch during the game. … In addition, the Coyotes have unveiled their alternates (additional info here, and here’s a closer look at the shoulder patch), the Kings’ alts have made their on-ice debut, and the Sharks have sold their soul to Seagate®, which definitely qualifies as the douchebag move of the week. … Here’s a nice view of Walt Tkachuk’s jawguard (with thanks to Alex Shuman). … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: LSU celebrated the 50th anniversary of their 1958 national championship team by wearing a jersey patch. … Some guy on eBay is selling two jerseys that he claims were worn by the Steagles (look here and here). Personally, I’m skeptical — no numbers on the back, for starters — but they’re still interesting (with thanks to Jason Bernard). … Scott Johnson was looking through the West Virginia Division of Culture & History State Archives and came up with two interesting shots of the WV State hoops team. Say what you want about the Cowboys but their throwbacks were GORGEOUS on sunday. I doubt we will ever see something as suspect as a “blackout” from Dallas.

I’m not sure if this was mentioned in yesterday comments, but the Kitchener Rangers retired Al McInnis’ number on the weekend as well and wore his number on the front of their jerseys, left side. I don’t have any pictures, but it looked dumb on the assistant captians

I saw a photo recently from this era with large letters “RSC” on the right sleeve. The Bucs must have worn these initials in memory of Pittsburgh mayor Richard Calaguri who died in May 1988.

That screen out in right field was probably to protect pitchers and catchers in the bullpen, not the fans. It looks like the fans are sitting in front of it and a Pirate is standing behind it. Unless that is the right fielder playing a ridiculous opposite field defensive shift, it must be a pitcher in the pen.

Hey everybody,
Anybody else notice that last night, the Saints were wearing three shades of gold? Their helmet, the numbers and the collar on the jersey. The helmet was the lightest shade, the collar almost looked mustard and the numbers were somewhere in between.
Have they always had trouble matching the gold on their black jerseys? Anybody have a pick about it? Thanks.

NHL third jersey round-up:
LA Kings – Love them. Glad to see them back in black. One of the very few teams I like in black.
SJ – Not so much. Seems rushed. Almost like they had 30 seconds to come up with an idea and said “Add a tail to our logo and make the jersey black, BAM! Third Jersey!”
PHX – It’s okay. Like the logo, but think the jersey would look 100x better if the base color was the sand color they used.

Hey everybody, I was wondering if I could get a little help with an assignment I have. I have to write an aritcle (I’m a journalism student)about etiquette rules for out-of-toen sports fans; basically, what people going to a game and rooting for the visitor should and should not do.
What I need is some things regular fans think- what annoys you guys about out of town fans at games, what can those fans do to avoid getting beer thrown at them, etc…
Also, if anyone has any stories about fans doing the wrong thing and getting something thrown at them and getting into fight or something like that, I’d love to hear it.
Last thing- since this has to be in an article, could you let me know your first name and either where you’re from or what your favorite team is. Thanks!
On a uni note, I went to the Flyers/Stars game last night. The Stars wore their third jersey (s aserious dissapointment- most ppl prob didn’t even realize it was a third jersey. The Flyers didn’t wear theirs, but were promoting it like craz- just about every stoppage of play they had it up on the jumbotron, reminding you that it went on sale on black friday, and if you got to the store by 7am, you got 30% off…uh, no thanks.

I love seeing pictures of certain teams in bad weather. Muddy jerseys make the yellow/gold and orange really pop. I remember seeing the Dolphins and Chargers in the mud and remembering how great the secondary colors looked.

The picture with the rubber being so close to the edge of the mound also looks as if the pitcher is stepping off and looking the runner back to second base, so he may very well be off of the back of the mound.

For the record, the Phillies player Paul linked to in the Life photos is none other than Willie ‘Puddin’Head’ Jones. Played 3rd base for the Fightin’s from 1947 – 1959.
The late, great Whitey Ashburn always seemed to have a Puddin’ Head Jones story to tell when he did color commentary for Phillies games.

I checked out some of the Little League photos before, and I wondered if the Farmington team was from Michigan. I missed this shot, which shows Michigan plates on the truck.
I’ll have to do a little research, but based on the Powers Rd. sign, the field must have been within a mile or two from my office. Which also means the Patent Drugs place was nearby too.

I didn’t realize Klu ran around during the regular season without sleeves. I have spring training film footage of him that way, but never thought anyone would allow him to do so in any official game.

Regarding the shot of the Cardinals in the dugout with numbers on their stirrups… I think the digits are chain stitched. What’s most interesting to me, though, is that the numbers on the stirrups don’t correspond with the players wearing them. Maris (#9) has #24 on his, and Washburn (#44) has #30.

My experiences as a fan in other NHL arenas.
As a wings fan in BOS:
Very nice experience, no bad stories whatsoever. Walked to our seats, had a boston fan turn around, and say “wings fan eh?”, I said “Yup, from Detroit Area, here on a Hockey road Trip”. He replied “That’s cool, nice to see fans from other cities here, well good luck”.
As a Ranger fan in PHI:
Personally a neutral experience, no bad treatment, but no good treatment as in BOS. Just regular stares when you are wearing other team’s sweater in their arena. However, some philly and rangers fans got into a yelling match a few rows ahead of me during the game and the rangers fan got kicked out, I feel because they were NYR fans. From what was said and done, if the NYR fan was kicked out so should the PHI fan. He was just as bad.
As a wings fan in CHI:
Lots of banter from CHI fans about how my team ’sucks’, CHI ‘rocks’ etc. CHI fans in front of us were giving us a hard time about our wings jerseys (possibly because the wings were losing all game). Then when the wings tied it late and ended up winning in OT, my buddy and I gave it back a little (expected) which the CHI didn’t like and just got offensive. With girlfriends there at the time one of the CHI started making them the butts of the jokes which was not acceptable and my buddy told the CHI fan to shut up, sit down, and put a hat on because the arena lights refecting off his bald head was blinding him. (I apologoze for my friend to all bald people). Never heard a peep out of the CHI guy for the rest of the game. Overall, fun time, expected the badgering but wouldn’t think it represents the whole fanbase or the great city of CHI.
As a neutral fan @ a NYR/WAS game @ MSG:
Had a ‘Neutral’ experence. Wasn’t bothered, just watched a great game in my first trip to NYC. Didn’t observe any hostility towards any WASH fans either…

I concur. In fact, I’ve had good and bad experiences with NY fans in the Baltimore area. It’s useless to generalize about fans from any one area, because people are individuals. I’ve met NY fans that I wanted to slap, but one of my best experiences at a Ravens game was when I met some Giants fans who were really terrific people.
So, it’s subjective at best. I mean, I’ve met Ravens and Orioles fans at games that I wanted to smack fwiw, and they’re my teams.

The Saints have always had problems matching their golds – that’s one of the reasons I hate them.
Actually, my biggest uniform pet peeve is fabric gold (like the Saints collar). You just can’t do it and teams shouldn’t try.
It looks terrible on merchandise and on uniforms. Teams should limit their gold to tackle twill fabric, shiny pants fabric, and shiny helmets.

The little strip of tarp outside the third base line is a mechanical tarp roller. I didn’t know they had them that long ago but it is just like the one that ran over Vince Coleman in St. Louis in’85 or ‘87.

WOW, those Austin East High unis are pretty hideous. There’s a much better way to wear those colors. Just look HERE at pictures 5,6, & 7 – that’s Broadmoor HS in Baton Rouge, LA. The HOME UNIS are OK, but I would prefer they wore white or blue pants.

The pitcher is stepping off the back of the mound, home plate would be to his 5-o’clock. It appears that he is looking into right field when the picture is taken, possibly checking out a scoreboard that might be in that general area.

Musial’s final game was IN St. Louis against the Reds on 9/29/63. The reason it looks like Wrigley in the background is because it’s Busch Stadium I (Sportsman’s Park).
According to Dressed To The Nines the Cards wore their blue hats for home and away in ‘63. In ‘64, they wore blue only on the road, and in ‘65 they went to red for home and away.

re: Steagles .. I think it’s equally fair to assume that the number sides are the backs since they have no tags.. That would make a ton more sense and the collars don’t appear to be definitive either way.

Thx Ricko – I also just noticed there were no base paths in the background, which definitely confirms he was in foul territory.
Anyone have any more pics of these flat, sandy bullpen mounds that were apparently in early stadiums? Seems to defeat the purpose if they don’t depict the exact height and terrain of the actual pitchers mound on the playing field.

Assuming the caption info was correct, maybe it was an exhibition of some sort? … Baseball Reference shows the Yankees were in the middle of a homestand in June, 1956, as the Reds were coming into town from Philly for a series in Brooklyn. Both the Yanks had Reds had off days on the 21st. Maybe that’s it?
Also, that cathcer doesn’t look like Yogi or Ellie Howard … any ideas who else that might have been?

The worst opposing team fan story I know of is this, and it was the home teams fans that were the problem…
I have a friend who played in the OHL. One time, in our hometown, his 15 year old sister was spit on for wearing a Brampton shirt. She is really shy, I’ve known them my whole life and she rarely speaks and when she does she is very quiet. So I can assure you that she was not being a problem at the game.
So basically being a fan in the opposing teams building is a case-by-case basis. In this case, just her being there was apparently a problem, but in many cases it can be a lot of fun if you are surrounded by the right people. It can even make the game more fun for the hometown fans if you and them are on the same page. It all depends on the other fans. Even at the same game, one person could have a great time and someone else sitting somewhere else may have the worse experience imaginable.

‘56 ASG was at Griffith Stadium in Washington. Both Klu and Lollar entered the game as pinch hitters and stayed in to play their positions.

The crimson WAZZU helmets were indeed quite special, because they had the “Cougars” script lettering for the very first time on a crimson helmet. In person, I can tell you that the Cougs’ all-crimson unis looked terrific and were very well-received by fans. One quibble is that the pants could have used some gray piping to match the jerseys, but that’s what happens when different uni pieces are worn together in a way not originally contemplated. Perhaps that small flaw will be corrected next season as new uni designs are introduced (from Nike).

Not only do they have colour, but they aren’t wearing a one-piece any longer. That’s why the pants routinely are a different colour and why hemline stripes were important on hockey jerseys.

No one is saying that isn’t so. But it doesn’t mean every NHL team that chooses black is doing so because of the Bruins. That’s like saying the Saints chose black when they joined the NFL—or that the Eagles and Lions have black alts—because the Steelers have been wearing black since, well, as long as they’ve been around.

The Gretzky era was the same time as the Bo Jackson era with the Raiders (going back to the Pro-Stars cereal days). They were all about the black-and-silver, and both teams hyped those colours to death.
The Bruins, in their predominantly white-and-yellow home jerseys, were called the “Big Bad Bruins” because of the characters they had on their teams, not because of their jersey colours. They were the only team with a black road jersey until the Penguins applied for a colour change to match the other professional sports teams in Pittsburgh. Otherwise, orange would be a far scarier colour considering how badly the Broadstreet Bullies mopped the floor with everyone.
- The Minnesota North Stars went black first as they began the proceedings in 1991-92 to move to Dallas.
- In 1992-93, the Ottawa Senators wore black road jerseys with red accents. The Lightning also debuted in black road jerseys.
- The Buffalo Sabres, in 1997-98, re-introduced themselves in black, red, and white.
- That same season, the Blackhawks introduced a black-based jersey for the first time since 1936-37.
- In 1998-99, the Calgary Flames introduced a black jersey for the first time in franchise history. The Kings switched from black-and-silver to black-and-purple. The Flyers introduced the first black jersey in their history. The Washington Capitals also did the same.
- In 2000-01, the Flames opted to keep their black jerseys as their road jerseys, marking the first time in club history that they have not worn a red jersey. The Ottawa Senators introduced a black alternate after working more red and white into their colour scheme.
- In 2001-02, the San Jose Sharks add a black alternate jersey. The Philadelphia Flyers eliminate their orange home jersey, and adopt their black alternate as their new road threads. The Washington Capitals also eliminate their blue road jersey, sticking with a black road jersey.
- In 2003-04, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim introduce a black alternate jersey. The Dallas Stars do the same.
- In 2006-07, the Anaheim Ducks opt for the all-black look at home. The Bruins wear two versions of the black, spoked-B jersey.
- In 2007-08, Anaheim, Boston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philly, Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay all opt for black-based home jerseys.
- In 2008-09, Boston, Carolina, Chicago, Los Angeles, Ottawa, Phoenix, and San Jose all opt for black-based alternate jerseys.
But it’s not an affliction. No, it’s just a passing trend like teal or fuschia. BEE-ESS!

About the Stan the Man picture: I bet it is a boy scout neckerchief only because I can remember seeing footage from Bob Gibson’s retirement of a boy scout putting a neckerchief around his neck. You can try finding the Cardinals 100th anniversary VHS, thats where I saw it.

Wish I could provide a link to the statistics but alas they are non-existant. But Jim Abbot supposedly led Flint Schools in season home runs with 6 until 1999 when my teammate at Flint Southwestern Academy broke that record with 9.
Apparently Jim had some pop in that left arm.

Is it possible that those stirrups were numbered not to go with the uniform, but rather with each other, that is they were numbered in pairs? Perhaps the laundry staff did this to make sure they were kept?

Regarding Citi’s sponsorship of the Mets’ new stadium… It occurred to me yesterday that the government missed an opportunity – the government should have gotten the stadium naming rights as a condition of the bailout.
At the very least, the US Treasury should get sponsorship of the “TARP”!

The why part is easy: because they were awesome.
As for the when part: they wore those when Vin Baker (obviously), Glenn Robinson and Ray Allen were all on the team. The only season they were together was ‘96-’97.
This pic is dated 12/20/95, so that means they were also wearing them in the 95-96 season.
I’m almost positive those were the only two seasons.

No mention of Oregon’s SoD Maui Invite unis? I have been watching almost the whole game and can’t tell if they have any NOB (but then again I was on the treadmill and didn’t have a very close look). I still have not seen a close up of their shoes yet. Are those Hyper dunks Mr. Powers? I am not too smart when it comes to shoes.
I kind of like the special edition unis. Not terrible. At least they aren’t black with the yellow floral print. Or maybe they will bust those out later, who knows.

Also, one more note from the Oregon/UNC game. Very briefly before the game started they showed the Oregon team shooting around with some really weird shooting shirts. They looked they t-shirts with palm trees on them and had their “O” in the middle. Anyone have a pic of those?
