Used to be there were only two kinds of baseballs used in the big leagues: the American League ball and the National League ball, each with its respective league prexy’s signature. Nowadays almost every ball has some sort of special team or commemorative logo, but you don’t really think of baseballs as logo-driven objects. Same goes for footballs and basketballs. Hockey pucks, on the other hand, are extremely logo driven. That makes them interesting design artifacts. And that’s where the Virtual Puck Museum comes in.
The puck museum, which was recently brought to my attention by reader Jeff Pudlo, is pretty much what it sounds like: a huge collection of hockey pucks, nearly 20,000 in all, each with a unique design. And while it’s fun to see the familiar NHL logos, the site’s real value is in its documentation of other leagues — minor, junior, collegiate, European, recreational, women’s, and more. Plus there are pucks made for weddings and other special occasions, coporate pucks, puck printing stamps and boxes, and lots of historical background. Frankly, I hadn’t given much thought to puck design until now, but it turns out to be an extraordinarily deep rabbit hole. There are even certified goal pucks!
The museum is one of those addictive sites that keep you clicking around all day, so I’ll leave you to it. Have fun explaining to the boss why you didn’t get anything done today!
Uni Watch News Ticker: So it’s pretty obvious that something fishy was going on in Sunday night’s Giants game. Some jerseys were mesh and some weren’t, some sleeve stripes were horizontal and some were curved, the “ny” chest logo was missing from some jerseys, and some nameplates had smaller-than-usual lettering. Unfortunately, Joe Skiba isn’t talking, except to say he’s “working on something.” Stay tuned. … Excellent info on UNC’s use of navy blue in the latter part of this article. Do a search on “The unveiling of” and start reading from there — good stuff (with thanks to Chris Warfford). … More NFL logo follies: HT Adjemian recently picked up a Pats shirt with three different versions of the NFL Equipment shield. As you can see, one of them has the old NFL logo, and the other two have inconsistent typography on the word “Equipment” (note the differing Qs, for example). … And wait, it gets better: Chris Flinn entered the ticket lottery for the Super Bowl and got a postcard from the NFL telling him that he didn’t win — and the postcard from the NFL uses the wrong logo. … Poppy problems in Ireland (with thanks to Tom Adjemian). … TNOB (team name on back) alert: Albany State Golden Rams (with thanks to Becky Taylor). … Very interesting padded helmet on display here (big thanks, as always, to Curtis Worrell, who runs the mighty Helmet Hut operation). … RPI hockey player Alex Anger-Houlet has a first initial and a HNOB. “His brother Matt is also on the roster with similar work done to his NOB,” says A.J. Frey. … The Prexy-elect was wearing a logo-creeped Chisox cap yesterday. … Ever seen these baseball card drinking glasses before? Stephen King saw them listed on Craigslist. Very cool. … “The Orioles’ new cap was briefly posted on the New Era website Monday afternoon,” writes Kenneth Levin. “Before it could be taken down, a fellow member of the Orioles Hangout snatched a logo comparison of the old (on the right) and the new (on the left).” The official unveiling will be tomorrow. … Jen Muller took a tour of Yankee Stadium the other day and took lots of photos. Among the highlights: The plate and rubber had just been dug up, and the retired numbers and accompanying plaques already had hologram authentication stickers. … It’s not April 1st, so I don’t know what to make of this (with thanks to Pat Sokolowski). … Jeff Barak reports that there’s a company called Willabee and Ward that makes reproductions of various sports patches, many of which are available on eBay. “I bought a handful of these and then got some modern blank jerseys in the proper colors and had the patches sewn on professionally, creating my own throwbacks of the 1927 Tigers road and 1924-1927 Philadelphia Athletics (going with the road grey for more contrast with the white elephant logo),” he writes. “Yeah, they’re not wool flannel, but I also spent $260 less than a Mitchell and Ness jersey would be.” … Been a while since we’ve discussed Dartmouth’s very unusual helmet design (with thanks to Greg Trandel).

The past few days have seen great comments on baseball uniforms. Keeps the hot stove stoked. Question for the experts. Most agree Detroit’s home uni is a classic. However, the road version is not so classic. What should they do? Since they use the old english D on the both the home and road cap, and since it is prominent on the home uni, should they try and incorporate it into the scheme on the roadie?

In last nights NFL game, the 49ers appeared to have 2 different stripe patterns on thier helmets. Most of the helmets had the standard Black-Wine Red-Black pattern, but more than one had a black-thin gold-wine red-thin gold-black pattern. I did not get any photos, but I saw the difference numerous times. My thought is that some of the newer helmets may have a raised middle seam that is wider than the wine red middle stipe, thus leaving a thin, but noticeable, gold stipe between the red and black.
Did anyone else see this?

No way. One of the best things about the Tigers’ unis is that they almost look like a completely different team on the road.
Very few others do a road jersey that looks COMPLETELY different from the home one: Cubs, White Sox, Reds and Yankees. A few more are noticably different, but maybe not at a quick glance: Mets, Blue Jays, Padres, Giants, Twins and now we can add the Nationals to that list. (Did I miss anyone? Alts don’t count.)
The one thing the Tigers have that none of these teams do is a completely different color scheme on the road.
The vast majority of teams just do what it basically a road version of their home uniform.

I think the longing for the cartoon bird is generational, fans my age miss the cartoon bird, but youngers fans only remember it as a loser. I would love to see it back as a Friday cap or a BP cap, if it isn’t going to be the primary logo. The problem is the O’s have adjusted the hat 3-4 times since they switched from the Cartoon bird, with only one change very noticable (first to second)

What is it about the puck that makes it such an endearing little piece of equipment? It fits so nicely in the hand. It has a comforting heft about it. The design is so simple, so economical. It’s just rubber. And do those logos pop out ever so nicely on its flat, black frame.

just to bring something up from yesterday:
“Did you see the Caps pre edge jerseys? Utter crap. Why would you go back to that?
I’m sorry, but I don’t and have not ever seen a problem with the RBK edge. The difference is the fit, and the new fit is a lot better to look at. In the years leading up to it Jerseys were loose to the point of being ridiculous.
I’ve said it before and I’ll wind up saying it a thousand more times- if your team fucked up the design it’s not RBK’s fault. They didn’t have to use a damned template. Rangers. Bruins. Red wings. Canadians. Did their designs go away from the traditional striping pattern? Bruins returned to it, they previously had the stupid little half stripes.
The RBK edge jersey did not kill the traditional jersey look. the hemline is stupid, yes, but it’s really a minor thing. What it did do is give teams an excuse to do something new.Only a few teams actually had to make changes. However, because of the desire for a quick buck, most changed anyway.
If you don’t like the design, fine. But it’s not the fault of the cut of the uniform. However, know that you’re in the minority on not liking that design. Most people I’ve talked to (on hockey boards, natch) consistently rate it as one of the best in the NHL.
But I’m sick of people saying the RBK edge design sucks because the team created designs suck. “
Yes I saw the pre-edge Caps jersey and they were great, I’m referring to the ones they based the edge ones one. The good old ones.
The new fit is terrible, and the jerseys tear apart. There is not need to have 800 panels to make up a jersey. My team was one of the smart ones being an O-six team the hawks don’t look too different. They got the dumb hemline though. The worst part of the new stuff that they are so thin you can see through the whites. Not to mention they want you to pay an arm and a leg for an authentic that’s not even used on the ice, a bunch of teams reverted back to the old material in certain panels. That’s not even available to the public. The players themselves have shown the new jerseys aren’t worth it.

I don’t know…I liked this one:
“I swear to god I will renounce my alma mater and my donation and my season tickets if we wear that crap. Those pictures with feathers on them look like something that belonged in a really bad Van Halen video, not on our players’ backs.”

That would actually be quite funny, if the area code of Virginia Beach changed. What would he do? Laser that bad boy off and replace it with the new one……?
I always found that humorous, how pro athletes use their area codes as some sort of badge opf honor. Personally, if I saw a guy with the area codes for South Central LA, Compton, or Harlem tattooed on him, well, that’s a bad-ass mother. But Virginia Beach? Or San Diego (6-1-9)? Yeah, OK.

From the tournament formerly known as the Coaches vs Cancer Classic: SIU tipped off against California (PA) tonight and it appears from this gallery that some of the visitors’ players still have NCAA patches from last year’s D2 Tournament while others do not.

“oregon…a uniform school with a football problem”
Nice. I like that. I may walk around the stadium with that on a sign…
If I had to choose this new one, or the diamond plate, I’d take the new one. But, the fact that it’s black…no thanks. Please.
It’s interesting that Oregon has started using black, when Oregon State’s primary color is black. Way to go.

The Dartmouth helmet is a throwback from the 70s. The current Dartmouth uniform is modern while the helmet is retro, which creates one of the ugliest football unis in history.

I went to the football coach’s office in the 90s, and upon seeing the helmet in a trophy case, I asked the coach why they didn’t wear the old ones. He said it was too weird.
The Dartmouth 90s unis were pretty simple and sweet:

My friend (a player) BEGGED the coach to switch to the old helmets, and they did in the fall of 1999. Dartmouth has been terrible ever since.

Paul or anyone else for that matter…are there any other MLB uni changes in the offing for this season? Also, I saw that someone asked about the Mets.
I always thought that, if they HAD to have an alternate jersey, it should be blue with the interlocking NY…sort of like they had in the 80s for a brief time. Or even this

Anyways, any news on the patch for them next year? I saw someone answer about the unis but not the patch. I hope, if they do, it’s a stadium patch and not that God-awful Dominos Pizza looking logo.
