Here’s my latest eBay score — a 1961 basketball uniform catalog filled with lots of pasty-looking white guys. Exciting! Let’s take a look:
• The basketball shorts in this catalog feature a lot of interesting panels and inserts I hadn’t seen before. Check out the two guys on the ends here, for example, or the guy on the right here (and a sleeved jersey!). And look at the dude on the right — it’s like a Jesus fish tipped on its nose! Additional interesting pants designs on display here and here, and you can see all five of these pages in this slideshow.
• This catalog had unusually good women’s uniforms. Check out these, and dig the buttons on these shorts. Additional women’s designs here and here, and all the preceding pages grouped together in this slideshow.
• Lots of cool varsity-style jackets. Check them all out here. (For some reason there’s also a small selection of quilted outerwear, although it’s not clear what this has to do with basketball.)
• Terry Proctor always wants to see the lettering pages, so they’re all grouped together here.
• Totally digging the striped collar points in the top warm-up pullover here. And look at that rear yoke!
• Rather annoyingly, this catalog doesn’t have a hosiery section. Fortunately, there’s this great display of knit trim options.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Tons of cool old football posters available here (with thanks to Rich Liu). … Lots of good pics in this book, including Will Clark with NOE (name on eyewear), a great little uniform on Johnny Evers’s kid, a really interesting insignia style that I’d never seen before, and two examples of striped contrast collars. … Tom Shieber turned up an interesting Sporting News item from 1951: “Warren Spahn, who had been wearing on his uniform the number of the victory he was attempting to notch, was crossed up on the next-to-final day of the season. The Braves’ lefty, after wearing uniform No. 21, borrowed George Estock’s No. 22 shirt. He beat the Dodgers, 6 to 3, registering his twenty-second victory. However, when seeking his twenty-third win on September 29, he wore Johnny Logan’s No. 23, and the Braves failed to produce any runs for him.” Amazing, right? But the item then continues: “Mort Cooper, when with the Cardinals in 1942, went on changing numbers to chalk up 22 triumphs, after he had stumbled several times on No. 13.” I’d never heard of anything like this before. … Best thing about this story: the next-to-last graf. Second-best thing: Singletary probably didn’t realize he was honoring a long-held Niners tradition. … L.I. Phil notes that John Goebel of the Cincy Bearcats had a biceps inscription last night. Anyone know the story behind that? … Yowza!

Ken Harvey does realize that “Float Ball” would be a completely different game in Space, on the moon, and on Mars? In space, everybody and everything is weightless, so the players would literally be flying around. On the moon and Mars, gravity will eventually pull you down, although it isn’t as strong as on Earth. Basketball with 20 ft or higher rims would be more appropriate. Not that this idea has much of a chance of being completed anyway, because according to my aerospace professors, we are more than 10 years away from getting to the moon, let alone Mars, or setting up a base on either body.

The Daniel Okrent book as previously published forms the framework for Ken Burns’ “Baseball” documentary (innings as decades).
A previous version had one of the more interesting Boston Red Sox photographs I’ve ever seen — the uniform’s lettering was much more ornate with little curlicues at the the corners of the serifs and inside the O and the D. That photo is not in the updated Okrent book.

Same here. I found it a couple days ago, and I’m surprised the price is still so low. The write up, though, dismisses it as a souvenir helmet, instead of a prototype. I seriously doubt that the Riddell made any souvenirs prior to it’s unveiling. And they certainly wouldn’t have made any, and would have stopped production, after it turned out to be universally hated.
The average fan, and apparently some collectors and dealers, probably has no idea what to make of it, so they’ll skip it in favor of an on-field design.
The auction doesn’t end until Tuesday, though, so there’s still time for the price to go up.

I have to say the writer about captured the look of Goddard, although the author’s age is showing. Goddard’s oldest buildings date from the 60’s. Equally ancient history to the 20-somethings that write for the Times, but still different eras.

Yeah, if you’re going to insist on putting a baseball jersey on an old, overweight man, you could at least remind him to take off his suit jacket first. But then, that’s the folly of putting a non-playing manager in uniform. Connie Mack had it right.
I missed “NFL Films Presents” this week, and I heard from a co-worker that they had a feature on the history of the Orange Bowl. Anybody know of a Web site where I could watch this? NFL.com, YouTube and Truveo aren’t helping.

Uniwatcher’s favorite color getting a political shoutout.
From USA Today:
What do candidates do on Election Day when everyone else is standing in line to vote for them? John McCain will be at the local multiplex. “He always goes to a movie on election day,” daughter Meghan McCain tells People. “He usually goes in the early afternoon.”
As for her own election day ritual, “I wear purple somehow,” she said. “Purple is my lucky color.” This is her dad’s eighth political campaign and it’s always nerve-wracking, she says. “I’m a basket case on election days traditionally, and I probably will be on this one, too. This is a really big deal and no one knows what the outcome is going to be.”

But, rumor has it that UGA may be in all red tomorrow. During Mark Richt’s press conference he was asked if they were going to don black jerseys and he said “no, we’re wearing red.” Then he was asked if the pants were going to be red and he simply stated that they are wearing red. Check it out on the AJC website. As a fan of the Bulldogs, I have to say I’m scared. I had a lot of fun dogging Tennessee fans after the creamsicle uniforms last year. This would be humiliating.
