You may look at this picture of Joe Maddon and say, “Wow … those hats are worse than I feared. That’s a stain on the stylistically spotless (timeless?) Tampa Bay Rays chappeau.”
I, on the other hand, think that’s abso-fookin-lutely genius. I have a hat like that for cycling, to fit under the helmet while keeping the ears and neck warm. And the bill — don’t forget the bill. It’s easily the most valued piece of winter-weather gear. Other than these, of course.
In baseball, there are about two weeks a year where this hat could be useful — opening week and World Series week. That’s when the real weather extremes are still possible. Plus, it looks about 10 times better than the gamer over the stocking cap, or the stocking cap over the gamer, or this. Well, it would if the flaps were down.
This seems to be one of those use it-or-lose-it deals, though. If you’re going to put on the flapped hat, put the flaps down. If not, put on your standard 5950 and stand near the heater. Also unacceptable: One flap down. – Bryan

I got some screen grabs of the Winter Classic jerseys last night. Unfortunately, I missed the official unveiling, but there were some good closeups of the Hawks jersey shown during the first intermission.
Best picture: Bobby Hull wearing one. Dig that NOB on the jersey behind him. You’d think they’d have personalized it with his name and number, though.
More pics, including some closeups of the Winter Classic patch and the Hawks logo:

I’m with Bryan, on the thoughts regarding the Rays’ “Elmer Fudd” hats. I’ve been taking baseball hats, and making them work in the cold for years. Winter headbands, ear warmers, winter hats over baseball hats etc. I think it’s functional and doesn’t look nearly as bad as it could. I also like the fact that the MLB logo is in the right spot, when it’s flipped up. Pretty cool. Now, how about the foresight of the equipment manager to order these things in the Spring…for a perennial loser?!

Those Winter Classic Blackhawks “sweaters” are apparently based on their 1934/35 unis, which were only worn for part of the season… the “barber pole” sweaters were introduced in ‘37/38, when the ‘Hawks won their first Stanley Cup… obviously, those jerseys would make identifying the players almost impossible from the upper deck.
The Detroit jerseys are based on the ‘26/27 Detroit Cougars; they were later named the “Falcons”, and didn’t become the “Red Wings” until ‘32/33!

i know the ducks pride themselves on, among other things, having 2,835 different uni combos…
this one may be the absolute WORST…there’s not a thing on that helmet or jersey, or pants or socks, that has one drop of “lightning” on or in it…and yet the pants, which have no white or green, are paired with that combo…
say what you will about the ducks unis, but as garish as they are, they usually are at least partially color coordinated…this was just kind of like, ‘ok we’re not on tv, who gives a shit…lets wear the lighting pants’

Just got done watching my West Ham take one on the chin at home to Arsenal and saw that on the claret home shirts, the player’s number (similar to the back number font) was in black (or a dark color) inside a white rectangular box right on the center of the front of the shirt. so watching Tulsa vs. UCF on ESPN right now and Tulsa has TTH on their nose bumper guards. They are the Golden Hurricanes so it couldnt stand for their name. Anyone know anything?
And on a related note I have never found a good picture online, but the Florida Gators have a black circle decal on the back of their helmets and I have always wondered what they were for. Any leads?

Ugh. Check out the logo creep on the gloves that the tuba players in Michigan State’s band wear:

Just a word on the Bucs-’Boys game today.
Earlier in the week there was an article mentioning the text on the front of the Cowboys’ white jerseys.
None of that today

I think that’s the point about expanding replay- to make the call reviewable. The Bases are fixed points, it’s not hard to put a few cameras on them to check over these things. the TV broadcasts manage to find a camera angle alright…

Huh?
Michigan, LSU, USC, Notre Dame, Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers.
6 of the best, classic, most easily recognizable football uniform sets in the world. All white uniforms, yellow pants. Okay, one is gold, but you get the point. Hardly crap. Oregon’s white on yellow look might look bad because of the white helmet, or the washed out tone of “Lightning” yellow, but to generalize so much and say that white on yellow looks bad goes WAY too far.

Apparently, Davis didn’t quit. Singletary kicked him out.

Seems like this might be an excellent way to foster bad will and keep free agents from resigning… or signing.

Would that be a bad thing? Do the Niners really want to keep these players?
Actually, I think the benchings (J.T. O’ was pulled, too) might be good for morale. Singletary said he wanted guys who want to win. Seems like he is as intense as a coach as he was as a player, and if even a little of that attitude can rub off on his players it can be nothing but good news for the team.

The Vikings started wearing throwbacks for their “Ring of Honor” game last year. They will this year too — I just don’t know which game that will be…

As a lifelong Saints fan, I find the All-Black look to be ugly, juvenile, and horribly minor league. they look like a Juniuor College with a low budget.
The white jerseys with black leotard pants are about 99% as bad as All_Black.
The Saints need to get over their idiocyu and wear the Gold pants full-time.

Or those who don’t want it to be a public spectacle when they have a bad day. Not to mention that a lot of the better guys in the NFL are cocky.
I have no problems with a coach chewing out a guy. However, it sends a really bad message when he does it in public like that.

Still haven’t seen any good pics of the Blackhawks/Red Wings outdoor jerseys, well, these earn the right to say that they’re sweaters.

I was watching the World Series post game pressers earlier. They had Charlie Manuel on the podium with Joe Blanton. One of the media members asked about the spot on the bill of Blanton’s cap because during the game Joe Maddon had the umpires check the cap for pine tar after seeing the spot.
At some point during the response Manuel pointed out that he had a similar, though lighter spot on his own cap bill. He said (paraphrasing somewhat) “I have a spot on my cap too. Its just some dirt. I haven’t changed caps all year.” He took the cap off and showed it to the room.
I had always assumed that the players were issued new caps for the Series with the patch on the side. However, the caps being worn by Blanton and Manuel are clearly the ones they have had all season and they both have the patch.
So, apparently there is a seamstress somewhere sewing those patches onto grimy lids. Maybe everyone else had already figured that out but it was news to me.
