Here’s another reader-recommended phootball photo book to check out. And this one’s among the best we’ve examined so far — not only are the photos tremendous, but there’s a wealth of uni-notable details. Por ejemplo:
• You’ve probably seen this photo of Jack Lambert’s gums a few dozen times. Until now, however, had you noticed that the end of his yellow-stripe tape appears to be coming loose?
• The single greatest thing about football is that they play in any weather, which leads to awesome photos like this, this, and this.
• Who’s the QB in this shot, Dilfer? Whoever it is, Note the Russell logo on his hip — I don’t recall having seen that back in the day. Did lots of teams have hip logos, or was this just a Tampa thing?
• Other things I didn’t remember: a chest wordmark on the Cowboys’ white jersey (hard to see, but it’s there), such massive maker’s marks on the officials’ caps, and such blatantly Wilson-branded gloves.
• Not sure who the tackler is in this shot, but check out the Batman logos on his arm pad and hand pad!
• Gotta love Charlie Joiner’s striped wristbands.
• This is one of the best old-timey football pics I’ve ever seen. Those are the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers playing at the Polo Grounds, 1936.
• See anything odd in this shot? Look closely at the tackler’s sock — that’s a little “Bengals” tag. I’ve seen something similar in a few 1990s Chargers shots, but never on a Bengal.
• Here’s the best shot I’ve ever seen of Lester Hayes and his stickum. Bonus points for the cup design.
• Wow.
• Back when football jerseys had sleeves, you could really see what the Jets were trying to do with their striping pattern: a white panel for the TV numbers, framed by two thick green stripes and then two thin white stripes. Puts the current version to shame.
Want your own copy? Won’t cost you much.
Uni Watch News Ticker: Robert Thomas has a new number. … Yesterday I linked to an article about a guy who claims to have created the MLB logo, but it turns out he’s not the only one who’s made that claim (links courtesy of JC Helf). … Mark Holmes sent along a bunch of images from the NFL’s Best Plays of the Year, 1962, which I’ve gathered into this slideshow. … Yesterday’s piece about football-themed baking projects prompted a few good responses. Derek Ponamsky steered me toward a bunch of LSU-themed cakes, and Brian Porter says his brother-in-law’s 40th birthday cake looked like this. Man, you’ve really hit rock bottom when you’re so desperate for a date that you’ve gotta grope a cake. … Here’s something you don’t see every day: a Pete Rose basketball jersey (thanks, Scott). … According to this page, there are less than 100 Revolution Speed helmets out there, and Navy has seven of them (with thanks to Mike Althouse). … R.I.P., old friend (courtesy of Alan Kreit). … Lots of old Devils and N.J. high school hockey jerseys shown here (with thanks to Kenn Tomasch). … Dog bites man. … It takes a lot of chutzpah to ask fans to spend big money for a jersey they can’t even see, but the Sharks are doing it anyway. … Someone on the Chris Creamer board has pointed out that if you scroll down to the bottom of this page, you’ll see several 49ers wearing gray facemasks during practice. Very curious to see if this is a permanent move by Singletary to put his aesthetic stamp on the team. … Anyone know why David Price has “Live Like Nate” printed on his glove? (Screen shot courtesy of Dan Perkey.) … Amusing bit here about how George Hendrick ruined baseball forever by wearing long pants (with thanks to Jesse Agler).

The Tampa Bay QB was, in fact, Trent Dilfer, although I never recalled him having worn the “Marino” style mask!
The picture was from the 1994 75th Anniversary season of the NFL. They lost to the Vikings on October 30th, thus making their record a dismal 2-6!

There’s also a Batman logo on his hand pad!
He’s either a Chief or a Buccaneer, lets check back to see if there were any “batmans” during Paytons’s era. What should make it easier, is the knowing the years when the Bears wore gray facemsks.

Another cool thing about the glove is that it’s a different version of the Batman symbol.
The Bears had gray facemasks until 1983 and that definitely looks like two shades of orange on that number, so I guess that puts it somewhere between ‘76 and ‘82.

That Bengal was David Fulcher, an absolute BEAST.
He was the first of the oversized safeties to play in the L.
He was basically a linebacker with better speed.
After him came the Dennis Smiths and Steve Atwaters!
To make this uni-related, he was one of the only bengals to wear an AiR helmet.
Check out the Forehead padding, the crown vents and the high chin strap hook ups, which were only available of AiR helmets at the time!

Hey, I’m in Pacific Time and just got up! I’d have had the Batman Wood thing for ya.
Yeah, Batman played for John McKay at USC and was one of the leaders of the Buc defense that was way, way, WAY ahead of the offense at startup. I have no idea why he was called “Batman,” but he took it to the max, with Batman logos on his elbow pads and, IIRC, hip pads. To this day, you wouldn’t be able to mention Richard Wood to a Buc fan without that person saying “Richard ‘Batman’ Wood.”
Good times, good times.

The Hawks will be revealing their Winter Classic jerseys tomorrow night according to the Hawks website. The speculation is it will be the same “barber pole” jersey they wore during the NHL’s 75th annaversary celebreation.
On the broken hockey puck question, they do break from time to time. While it’s solid rubber, it’s still rubber and can be cut by things like a skate blade. As a goalie there were a few times in practice where a puck would be shot at me and half would come my way,and the other half would end up in the corner.

I hate long pants in baseball. Any one with a bit of sense would agree. However, I do not blame George Hendrick. If I recall from my “old” days, the manufacturer’s logo gravitated fromthe side of the pants to the front of the pants in the early 90’s. I remeber wearing Russell pants with the “R” on the side. The next year (had to be 1991-92), we got new pants with them on the front left.
The “R” on the jersey was low on the sleeves, below the sleeve number. By the time I got to college, it was on the upper-right chest.

These helmets look like a hybrid between the modern and 80’s helmets. They have the gold inner circle and the black outline around the SF of the current design, but the black circle is a uniform width (current: thicker on the sides and thinner at the top and bottom) and the red-white-red stripe seem to be reflective of yesteryear. Maybe (hopefully) they are doing a fauxback evocative of the glory days, but keeping some of today’s elements (darker red, richer gold, etc.) in place.

I look at teams like the Mets, Blue Jays and White Sox. Now THAT’S what I call “black-heavy”. In the NFL, I would consider the Detroit Lions “black-heavy”, since not only did they integrate black into their uniforms, they introduced a black alternate jersey into their uni scheme.

I love that design. For the city where it would have stood, really sweet. Every ballpark doesn’t need to have a nostalgic exterior element. Inside and the playing area, of course, should be traditional, but outside can go any direction it wants, as long as just no DULL. Glad to see the multipurpose, climate-controlled crap go, that’s the real point. Like places built only for baseball, vintage-looking or otherwise stylized.

I had a job as the doorman at the Marriott hotel right across the street from Old Busch Stadium back with Silent George was a player with the Cards. One day he pulls up in front of the hotel in his Green Porsche and starts to go into the hotel, and I recognize him and say ” Hey Mr.Hendricks, I’m sorry but you can’t leave your car here”. He throws me the keys and says ” you can move if if you have to, I’ll only be about 10 min”. I say okay and as he passes me I say ” Man that’s a great looking car”…he says.” Take it for a spin if you want”…and I DID…I took it around Busch Stadium at about 80 mph! When he came back out he asked me if I drove it and I said I sure did …he just laughed and handed me $10. George could do no wrong with me from there on out!

Absolutely. I was thinking more along the lines of what the original poster was saying, that the 49ers put black accents into their uni-scheme so now he considers them “black-heavy”. Teams that have a black-color scheme by default are “black-heavy”. I guess what I was trying to get across was that of teams that have put black accents into their color scheme, there are teams that have gone overboard with it and have become “black-heavy” more than what the Niners have done. You ask someone what the Niners colors are, they’ll tell you red and gold (or maroon and gold). I don’t think “black” will be one of the colors chosen. By contrast, look at teams like the Mets, Blue Jays, or White Sox, or the Detroit Lions with their black jerseys. And, of course, the Saints and Raiders. Now THAT’S “black-heavy”.

Let’s hope more than just the Patriots take note. Back in the 70’s when white cleats and colored facemasks started to be vogue, it signaled the ruin of the uniform in pro AND college football.
But, now that black cleats are back, here is what will fix the pro game so that games would be watchable again:
First and foremost a message to Nike; Thanks for RUINING the uniform with these STUPID 2 toned cleats you introduced and are now taking over straight black cleats. jerks! ALL teams need to lose these new 2 toned cleats!
Teams with black cleats that need to go to a grey facemask: Packers, Bears (yes Bears fans, it would look cool), Redskins, Lions (lose all that black in your uniform too!), 49ers (and go back to Montana era uni also. Have done this a couple of times and looks great), Jets.
Teams that need to go to black cleats: Cowboys, Raiders, Broncos and Titans (a uniform tweak for both is in order too).
Teams that need to go to grey facemask AND black cleats: Dolphins, Steelers (yes Steelers fans, it will work for you too), Patriots, Chiefs.
PLEASE San Diego, go back to the powder blue thowbacks with number on helmet, grey facemask, black cleats (you can keep the modern lightning bolt) and use the gold pants every so often at home in addition to the road.
Rams and Vikings go back to the 70’s (Vikings did this against the Packers at home in ‘07) with grey facemask, black cleats and stripes on socks (stripes on socks needs to make a comeback by-the-way). The modern design of these 2 teams suck.
Texans and Ravens start over!
Cardinals, Panthers (minus all the logos on your uniform), Falcons, Bengals, Jaguars, Saints and Seahawks are fine as is.
Current best uniform is a tie between the Browns and the Giants. Colts, Bears, Bucs, Bills (throwbacks and current) and Eagles are close behind. The changes suggested above would turn this into a great competition AND make watching pro football enjoyable again.

Re: 49ers grey masks.
Often when teams wear their throwbacks, they wear the helmets in practice, either in preseason or the week before. Vikings did the same thing last year. Cowboys do it. Steelers did it with the yellow helmets last year as well.
I’d be willing to bet that the niners wear their throwbacks this weekend.
But perhaps all of this on the urging of Singletary. Meaning that had Nolan remained they wouldn’t have worn the throwbacks.
But… I could be wrong.

Someone on the 49ers blog Niners Nation says that they are wearing the gray facemasks in practice this week because they are wearing the throwback unis this Sunday – and they like to get used to seeing gray in front of them – not an indication of any impending permanent changes.
I’m not sure why they wouldn’t just wear the throwback helmets – seems like a lot of work for the equipment staff to have to switch out all those facemasks.

I always thought the Jets could fix their sleeves to more closely resemble the original by simply reversing the shoulder inserts. Meaning, change the insert from white-green-white to green-white-green on the green jersey, and vice-versa on the white jersey. It would be subtle, but I think it would make a difference. (Anybody want to try photoshopping this? I’m hopeless…)
It occurs to me that the shoulder inserts were a little further apart the first year or two they wore the current jerseys (1998-99). Meaning they appeared to be on a slight outward angle, whereas now they appear essentially vertical.

Will they just change the stripes and side emblems on the 49ers helmets, but use the same shell? Seems reasonable to me.
Also, to be truly accurate to the ‘81 team, which is what the throwbacks are based on, shouldn’t the Niners be wearing white cleats? I would prefer all white cleats with no red myself. Also the shiny jerseys weren’t around in 81. They should be more of a flat red.
