We all know how I feel about sock stripes, and we all know what a lousy era this is for them, especially in the baseball, football, and basketball realms. Fortunately, there’s hockey, where every player wears long socks, most of the socks have stripes, and the stripes are right where they belong, at calf level.
But Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel apparently has his own ideas about sock stripeage. As reader Garrett Malcolm points out, Sopel’s been wearing his stripes down around his ankles (that’s him at upper-right). “Not only does this put the stripes in an unusual location, but it makes his calves look wide and trunk-like,” notes Garrett. “It also kind of gives the feeling of baseball players who let their pant cuffs cover their shoes.” Indeed.
Sopel’s been in the league for a decade now, so I assumed this must be a new thing with him. But some quick photo research revealed that his sock stripes have been feeling gravity’s pull for a long time, dating back to his days with the Islanders and Canucks, and even his brief training camp stint with the Red Wings. (It’s harder to be sure about his time with the Kings, because their stripes were so wide that he couldn’t have worn them much higher.) Not sure how I never noticed it until now.
When alerting me to these hosiery highjinx, Garrett said Sopel was wearing his sock upside-down, but that doesn’t make sense — if he did that, the stripes would be up on his thighs. Seems more likely that he’s using extra-long hose and cutting off a few inches at the bottom. I plan to call the Blackhawks and ask them about this, but before I do, does anyone know of any practical reasons why Sopel might want to do something like that? Do any other players do it? Details, please.

He even got the ball rolling by contributing some examples from the Division III MIAC, which features the St. Thomas Tommies, St. John’s Johnnies, Augsburg Augies, Gustavus Adolphus Gusties, and St. Olaf Ollies.

Sopel must be wearing extra long socks. Don’t think they are upside down because hockey socks (at least the ones I wear) are smaller on the bottom for you ankles, and bigger on the top for your thieghs.

In regards to the front fight strap, it is there so an opposing player can’t pull your shirt up over your head in the front. John Erskine for the Capitals currently wears one of these. I will see if I can dig up a picture.

Sports Poster Warehouse uni-timeline appears to depict the Titans in a all light blue jersey and they have never worn black cleats either.
Speaking of which the Titans are planning a blue-out, they are calling it CODE BLUE. They are giving out 68,000 light blue tees at the MNF game versus the Colts (early version went out to the media in paint cans yesterday) I fear this also means that they will be wearing their most absolutely hideous uni combo- the Columbia light blue jersey/pant…ugh. I am hoping for the navy (formerly primary now the alt) jersey with the Columbia blue pants

Whoa, there are so many little errors in that uniform chronology poster I don’t know where to start. Titans and Texans, for example, have never worn black shoes. And, minimally, 12 & 13 should be reversed. The original Cowboys uni was worn in ‘60, a good four or five years before Broncos wore that particular orange set. No matter really, I suppose, though. Trying to put together a poster like that is a bitch, so we definitely need to cut the artist a fair amount of slack.
Nicknames? Always thought Tufts Jumbos was…interesting. Have this vision of a campus full of coeds wearing teeshirts reading TUFTS or JUMBOS. Y’know, depending.

As to the socks many of my college teammates did the same thing (and myself to a lesser extent) because with fitted ankles on hockey socks the bottoms can be a bit annoying. So we pulled them down to create a more comfortable feel around the upper ankle/lower calf.
And in regards to the forearms showing, that too is a comfort thing. With the new tighter jerseys the forearm area has been caught in a transition pinch. Players aren’t accustomed to feeling their jersey’s around that area. Having something that tight around your forearm/hand area can interfere with the “feel of the puck.”

Well, it took long enough, yet there is a Seahawk player wearing one of the new high tech helmets; Riddell Revolution Speed. It’s linebacker D.D. Lewis. My guess Lofa Tatupu should follow suit after his second concussion. Don’t be surprised if you see him wearing one this weekend. He wore the Revolution his rookie year(Super Bowl Season), his best year as a Seahawk, and hasn’t worn it since? My advice to Lofa, wear the Revolution Speed.

Virginia Tech is NOT a Riddell exclusive team. We have had OL wearing Schutt since at least 2000. Heck, you can even buy Authentic, replica, and mini VT Schutt helmets on campus. Its been that way since at the very least my freshman year in 2002.

The Sports Poster Warehouse shot reminds me again of why it’s so frustrating sometimes to see uniform chronologies in various contexts.
Being a Broncos fan, I immediately noticed #12 was wrong…There wasn’t a blue number/white outline on orange, and especially not in 1960. The poster says it’s supposed to be the first uniform in their current city…and the Broncos are infamous for the vertical striped socks and nasty brown and yellow uniforms they started with. The orange unis weren’t introduced until a few years later.
Anyone ever notice those mugs/posters/magnets etc, that list the progression of team uniforms? I know that on the Broncos one they paired the away jersey with home pants (blue stripe to orange stripe) for 1999. It’s been corrected in future editions, I believe.
Of course, I also traded Madden 09 back 3 days after I bought it because they put the Broncos in the terrible blue pants and got rid of the standard white pant home set. The Broncos only wear blue pants on national TV games at home. If only they’d just done a bit of research!

Looks likely that someone figured out during demo that the stairs landing was hollow, not solid concrete. This probably made extraction feasible (can you imagine trying to carve away a slab if it were solid?)

Also regarding that poster they seem to use the words “first year a team moved to that city” to mean “when the team changed their name” since the Phoenix Cardinals became the Arizona Cardinals in ‘94, but still played in the same city and stadium (Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe).

About Sopel:
He wears thicker shin pads for blocking shots as a defenceman. With the socks being form-fitting, it could simply be that he can’t get the tighter end of the sock over his shin pads. Therefore, he wears the new socks, but needs to wear them longer to accommodate his shin pads.
If you look at this picture, you can see he’s got a ton of padding on his shins. I doubt that the tight socks would fit.
Of course, this is just a guess, so if anyone hears differently, you know what to do. :o)

In regards to the main entry today, I can explain the socks thing. He’s probalby wearing a size up, but the appearance isn’t the reason. A lot of guys these days wear extra long shinpads that cover the front of the skate too, so the socks have to start up under the pad. If the guy is traditional about how he wears the gear (as I am) the sock goes inside the skate and the pad begins right at the top of the skate.
Most guys though just tuck the sock under a little bit under the pad, so the stripes so the stripes still look reasonable
What I think we have going here is Sopel putting his socks in his skates in the traditional manner but then hiking them down and putting the shin pad on, eating up a lot more sock and thus lowering the stripes.
Unfortunately, it’s a rare guy in the NHL these days who wears his socks and pads right. It’s more excusable though since the new style does offer better protection.

More inaccuracies on that NFL uniform timeline: The Bears were the Decatur Staleys in 1920 and the Chicago Staleys in 1921. Were the Lions ever known as the Portsmouth Lions? I thought it was the Portsmouth Spartans.

First things first, Sopel’s socks are not upside down. If they were the stripes would be around the knee/thigh area.
You can also see that Sopel doesn’t have the socks tucked into the skate as was pondered. He does indeed wear longer shin guards as a defenseman because you want to minimize the amount of unpadded area. The old style with the pad inside the tongue of the skate exposed too much of the foot/upper ankle and was, frankly, dangerous.
Please, please stop saying they’re upside down though, they aren’t.

And to be honest…Once upon a time in 1994, I watched almost two whole playoff series. Rangers/Devils and Rangers/Canucks.
My roommate freshman year was a very good hockey player, in the Xaverian HOF, no less. I watched alot being around him, plus I learned how to make the little “deke” move that never failed in NHL ‘93 for whatever game system that was!

Actually, that would be it. The old CCM socks were very loose around the pad. I could never wear them myself, I wear something by twin city or pearsox, because they’re much tighter and help hold the pad in place- but a lot of guys like the really loose feeling. When the RBK edge was introduced, Socks became a lot tighter, so he probably asks for a couple sizes up to get it looser- and since the velcro patch to hold it up is at a fixed location (Us joes can’t get them in sizes, but pros get Small, Medium, large, XL and so on) So he has to take the extra length off at the bottom.
So in effect, this is the baggy baseball pants of hockey.
As for the pre RBK ones? probalby cutting off the elastic part at the bottom.

A list of things since we’re talking my favoriite sport – hockey.
Socks. As mentioned if they were upside down, the stripes would be on the thighs or high knees, giving a bellbottom effect. An unfortunate effect you see at the high school level at inferior programs that have no standards.
Many players tend to overlap their socks over their skates to simply hold their laces in place – something I do as a goaltender. Some kids at the youth and high school level take this one step further and pull the sock around the heel though. They’re easily spotted sitting on the bench for looking stupid.Goalies on the other hand tend to do this (pull the sock around the heel) for practical reasons, i.e. as we move around the socks tend to ride up our legs because of the straps from our pads, but pulling the socks around the heel of the foot keeps them in place.
Now to sleeves being worn up on the arm. It’s a fad with these new Rbk Edge jerseys because if you remember, players complained that the sweat was held in the jerseys and ended up in the gloves. Simple solution, wear the sleves up so the sweat comes out and drips on the ice, not in gloves. Goalies tend to do this because tight sleves can restrict arm movement. I tend to simply wear a jersey that can double as a 12 man tent in the off-season because all that extra fabric can catch pucks.

Just to comment on the NFL timeline poster, and the artwork in particular, I don’t think it’s that bad; there may be inaccuracies there but overall I think it’s a nice looking and interesting piece.
As a football artist, I know how hard it can be sometimes to get the uniforms exactly right, but knowing there are people that will really scrutinize what I do, I do make sure that they’re as close as possible!

I went to VaTech’s Athletic Dept. website and looked in the staff directory for their Equipment Manager.
I called Lester Karlin and Eric Cross and left messages stating my dilemma.
Not 30 minutes later, Karlin, the head E.M. called me back with an answer.
He stated that since 1976, VaTech has worn either the Riddell VSR-4 or Revolution.
To this, I mentioned Tyrod Taylor’s recent wearing of the Revolution Speed. He was impressed that I noticed, then mentioned that Taylor will be returning to the VSR-4 that he wore last year, this weekend.

The city of Pekin was named after Beijing, China, which used to be known as Peking or sometimes Pekin.

First thing I noticed with Sopel’s socks is they blended in with the ice. Is it possible hes wearing the stripes extra low so when a shooter glances up and lets it fly he doesnt focus on his shins and therefore Sopel blocks more shots ?
Wasn’t that the whole purpose behind Barasso’s pads, so when shooters glanced up they thought they saw white openings to shoot at ?

I submitted the River Forest Ingots and then remembered the Steamboat (CO) Sailors.
My favorite part of the Ingots was that the girls’ teams are the Lady Ingots. I always thought that metal was gender neutral.

My School Christ School, mascot is the Greenie
They name came about when back in the 1920’s I believe, our baseball team won a big game that we were the underdogs in. After the win the headmaster told a senior to go and pick out the new uniforms. He chose all green uniforms, hence the name Greenies

When my sister attended Cal State Hayward in the 80s there was a vote on whether to change the school mascot from the Pioneers. The options included the Vampires and the Zuchinis. Pioneers won out. Bummer.

The reason I even found out about this ridiculous nickname is from a story a former coworker of mine told me. His wife went to Pekin High School. He’s of Japanese descent.
He told me that when he and his wife went to her reunion, any time he got stuck talking to someone he didn’t know, he would introduce himself by saying “Don’t you remember me? I was the mascot.” He insisted that this really happened.

In the 1960’s, my Macon Georgia high school was the Sidney Lanier High Poets. In Alabama (Birmingham?) Bart Starr also went to a Sidney Lanier High, But I’ve forgotten if they were the Poets. Later we became the Central High Chargers…a far cry from the Poets.

If you look at West Virginia on the high school mascots list there is a school called the Poca Dots. My high school basketball coach once told us about this school but we all thought he was just pulling our legs. I’m glad I know now…that has to be one of the best names ever.

The NFL uniform evolution poster is pretty cool in that it shows color renderings of uniforms that are rarely seen in color, but if it intends to show a team’s initial uniform in it’s current city (as it says), then it is woefullly inaccurate. My first impression is that the uniforms depicted for the Bills, Broncos, Jets and Ravens all show later uniforms. I hate to be Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons here, but come on! Worst Awesome Poster Ever!
