The Bucs had a big halftime tribute to Mike Alstott last night. As is frequently the case in the NFL, they didn’t officially retire his number, although they certainly made sure everyone knew what that number was. Anyway, amidst all the fuss and fiddledeedee, they apparently neglected a bit of quality control regarding Alstott’s nameplate.
Or did they? Reader Brandon Creeger posted this in last night’s comments: “The orange jersey is from his rookie year (1996). For his first two home games, his jersey was misspelled. [So the typo in the retired jersey] was intentional. It was the first jersey he ever wore in the NFL.” That story appears to be confirmed here. I’d never been aware of that typo.
In other uni-related news from the weekend:
• Pink uni elements to support breast cancer research are nothing new, but New Mexico State took things to a new extreme on Saturday, replacing their regular helmet decal with a pink ribbongloves too, although that seems like an afterthought compared to the helmets. • The Bears did their annual Tang-fest thing yesterday. Lots of additional pics here.
• The Rams wore white at home, presumably to force Dallas into wearing their bad luck blues.
• Speaking of the Cowboys: Most of the attention regarding Dallas QB fingers was focused on Romo’s wittle boo-boo pinky, but check out the tape on Brad Johnson’s fingers. Never seen that on a QB before. Anyone know what that might be for?
• And Matt Garza was wearing earplugs in the 1st inning last night — unusual for a home starter. He took them out for the rest of the game. (Screen grab courtesy of L.I. Phil.)

I was one of the detractors of the Rays new unis before the season.
Whether due to their success, or my warming to the simplicity as well as the Carolina accents, they look OK.
They haven’t won the WS but the AL pennant is a great achievement after their years of futility, but when the Broncos ditched their Orange crush unis, they finally broke through into the winning column as well.
The only team of recent memory to go the other way, has got to be the Rams, who won with their LA version uni, but change to the glossy finish unis the following year,

I think the real story is that the original blue-C mask has the “RBK” logo, and the new white-C verison has the Reebok wordmark, which reflects Reebok’s company-wide branding shift. So this was really just a sponsorship/branding adjustment — the change in the “C” was incidental.

Chris Berman also helped solidify his rep as well with the “battering ram” sound effects whenever highlights of him played. For what it’s worth, Earnest Graham has done a pretty good job at FB the last few weeks.

Obviously here at UW, we believe in the power of the uni but to borrow from Joe Garagiola the uni-connection here is “like blaming the Johnstown Flood on a leaky faucet”.
To prioritize the contributing factors: Great drafts and trades, proper management and somewhere after, new unis.
It’s not much different than those who claim that the disavowing of the “Devil” from the moniker found them favor from the Almighty and I’m pretty sure that’s not the case, either.
I realize the blasphemous nature of my feelings, but I think most of the examples are, dare I say, coincidence?

That’s the hand he uses to receive the ball from under center. From what I’ve read, Johnson is fastidious about his uniform and gear. And I’ve seen him use tape on his left hand at least since his time with Tampa Bay.
Bonus: The extra “ring” on his ring finger may be a stand-in wedding band, as David Carr used to do.
If anyone knows better/more, I’d like to know too!

As a Rays fan I would like to thank the Mets for giving the team Scott Kazmir (cause that really wasn’t a fair trade Vickey Z for Kazmir). He won the All-Star game for the AL and now the Rays have home field. One thing that bothers me though is how do you have home field in the World Series but don’t have a signle weekend date?

Mike and Mike (ESPN2) are displaying batting helmets for each World Series team on their desk. Double flappers, but even worse is that the Rays helmet is definitely not from this season - its black with a TB and a Devil Ray on it.

Just a followup on the two players with the same name conversation that has been going on. (To be fair, I’ve only been half following it, so forgive me if this got mentioned in the comments somewhere.)
The 1999 (and I think a couple other year) Rams had two players named Mike Jones. I recall reading an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that said the Rams had to receive special permission from the League and union to put “Mike A. Jones” and “Mike D. Jones” on the uniforms since the NFL regulations only allowed for first names.

During the Packers/Colts game yesterday Ryan Grant was having some issue with his pants falling down during the first series in the game. He ran the ball on two straight plays and when he got tackled his crack was showing. He knew there was a problem but it didn’t appear he was wearing a belt when it happened from what I could tell.

I vaguely remember the discussion of multiple players wearing the same number in the NFL but now that it’s going on with the Skins (#37), I care about it now. Obviously it has to happen with one guy on the IR but the guy is still technically on the roster, seems a little strange to me.
I liked the shot of Brad Johnson and enjoyed the comment about his meticulous uni-nature. When he was with the Skins, I really liked the full sleeves but hemmed edge. I own a 2000 home white jersey and had the sleeves cut that way, looks sweet. Not a huge fan of the elbow pads but love the full cage QB mask he always wears.

I’ve always been a fan of Maryland’s unis if for no other reason than them being unique. Basketball wise, they are really clever with their look. Football on the other hand, there are some serious issues there. They like to black-out, but always wear a white helmet. They have really nice baseball uniforms, too.

Someone pointed out last night that the World Series would be softball-jersey free. Taking it a step further, all four teams that lost in the Division Series, I believe, wore their softball jerseys at least once during the series (correct me if I’m wrong on that).
Even better, no solid colored alts in either LCS. Its been a good postseason, aesthetically.

i was able to take on the rays as my AL team though since my parents just moved down there though, so scotty isn’t completely dead to me. jim duquette is however. you can thank ratings for the lack of a weekend date, too. fox hated starting the series on a saturday and figured once fans got a chance to sit down and catch up with it in the middle of the week, the series could be close to over.
must say, i’ve been sitting all playoffs watching wondering what direction the rays will go in for a probable third this season. i’m hoping powder blue instead of navy. and on an unrelated baseball note, LOVE chris botta’s blog about the fishsticks jersey and kudos to the coyots for a sharp third!

As for the Bears’ orange, I give it a marginal thumbs-up. They will never quite look like the Monsters of the Midway in orange, but considering Papa Bear Halas gave the Bears U Illinois (his alma mater) colors, the unique number font is still present, and the orange-ness gives a pseudo-throwback feel, the Bears’ orange is hardly the worst alternate look out there.

I have to say, with some of the World Series in recent years, it will be nice to see 2 teams with classic looks going at it. Granted, the Rays could tone it down a little with their wordmark and make it a little smaller, but between them and the Phillies, its pretty nice. Actually, this has been a relatively ugly-uni free postseason for baseball. I can’t recall one set of unis this postseason that you could legitimately call hideous. Pretty impressive, really

1. At least 7 men on the LOS
or
2. No more than 4 players behind the LOS

3. 5 players within the “Tackle Box” numbered 50-79. This makes them inelible to receive as well as if they are covered up by an outside receiver.

I have to say, being from Cleveland there’s nothing better than having your favorite team get hot and win the league championship after years of failure. All the sore losers need to get off their high horses about how Tampa couldn’t fill seats. Who cares! The Yankees and Mets should never have an empty at their stadiums, ever, but no one complains if they don’t have sell-outs. Prior to this year, the Indians had the consecutive sell-out record, after years of futility. Fans will come out to see a good product, essentially that’s what they are buying. If a movie doesn’t get good reviews from people you know (not critics) do you go see it? If you know a restaurant is bad, do you go there? You don’t complain that the movie-goers don’t deserve to have movies played in “their” theater because they don’t go. People don’t get criticized for not eating at a restaurant, the restaurant has to improve or it will go out of business. Why should sports be any different.

It couldn’t have been the alternate that year, unless it began the season as an alternate.
The NHL prohibits teams from wearing alternate jerseys in the playoffs. Though, I’m not sure if that rule has been around forever, or if thats something that was just recent.
You’re right, though. They were wearing that jersey when Hull scored. However, they did have the traditional whites on, though they did move to the white version of the star jersey the following season.

In this environment, it’s more than “not bad,” it’s flat-out awful. You have to look at the number in context, against what the rest of the majors are doing.
The Rays constantly fight for the lowest attendance in the majors. Here’s their ranking for the last eight years (out of 30 teams):
2001: 29th
2002: 28th
2003: 29th
2004: 29th
2005: 30th
2006: 29th
2007: 29th
2008: 26th
There’s just no way to spin this as anything less than pathetic attendance.
We can repeat the long list of excuses for why the fans stay away in droves, but that doesn’t change the numbers.

re: New Rays units and affect on team.
It’s like in THE LONGEST YARD (either version). When a team is on the verge of finally getting it all together, new unis can sometimes be the final thing to top it off.
I know when the Twins unveiled the pins in ‘87, after sansabelts, powder blues and red hats that didn’t match anything, I told my then-wife, “They’re gonna win the whole thing…or least make a hell of a run at it. New unis on a good young team, unis that make them feel like winners, can be a much bigger deal than people realize. When they look at each other now, they’ll see big league ballplayers.” (and don’t nitpick at that by saying, “Duh, of course they’re big league ballplayers”; you know what I mean).
As I’ve mentioned here before, I thought the same thing when I first saw those new Rays unis on a magazine cover at an airport newsstand back in March.
And damned if it hasn’t happened again.

I can’t find a picture of it, but during the Rams/Cowboys game yesterday, Steven Jackson had his jersey torn vertically from the neckline almost all the way down, right between the numbers. He had to sit out 2-3 plays while he changed jerseys.

I ref both college and high school. I saw that post yesterday but have never seen the offense attempted. We talked a lot about it before the season, though.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see a rule change since it seems to go against the original intent of the numbering exception.

Both teams wore their ugliest possible combinations for that game, which is even more of a crime because Buffalo’s throwbacks and the Chargers pre-2007 powder blues are two of the nicest looking football uniforms you’ll ever see…and yet these boneheaded organizations sit on them in favor of all that navy blue dreck.

IIRC, there are two kinds of navy worn by MLB clubs - the midnight navy favored by the Yankees and Red Sox, and the lighter navy worn by the Brewers and the Rays.
So it is navy, but not the Yankees’ navy.

(and, yeah, that might explain the debate about the White Sox ‘69 and ‘70 unis. They may have gone to the lighter navy in ‘70, and it confused me cuz up until that time navy pretty much was, well, navy).
It would be interesting to know when teams started PMS-matching as opposed to buying standard, catalog-issue colors: Navy, Royal, Scarlet, Orange, Brown, Maroon…etc., etc. During my years of uni watching (lower case version) I assumed was standard issue stuff. Was only things like the varying blues of Chargers in mid-to-late 60s that made me first wonder about custom colors, especially in shades of blue.

Where caps are concerned, teams are still buying catalog colors.
New Era makes two shades of royal blue - the darker one favored by the Cubs, Dodgers and Rangers, and the lighter one worn by the Royals, Blue Jays and Brewers. No matter what the team colors are, the royal caps come in one of those two shades.
This could well be why teams like the Twins seem to have so much trouble matching their caps to their jerseys.

It may be an old picture but Hovan still looks ridiculous. I played TE and FB in college. Sleeves are not that much of an issue. Most of the guys that had the sleeves shortened did it for the CDI (Chicks Dig It) factor.

The 1993 World Series was the last to feature turf - in fact, both teams played on artificial turf that year. Unless something weird happens (like the Jays, Rays or Twins changing leagues) 1993 will be the last series played entirely on turf.

The media and Rays fans act as if Kazmir is the greatest pitcher in baseball history. No team has ever taken more heat from a player transaction as the Mets have in the Kazmir trade. Not even the Sox selling Babe Ruth comes close.

Haven’t seen it. Its widespread adoption has been, it seems, overstated. Know of only one guy, in Illinois, who has seen it. No, it’s not impossible to call, but it would (nearly) be in a hurry-up situation. One problem is that unless it’s done really well, it’s probably going to be illegal. For too many reasons to go into right now.
Fairly new. Gaining a bit of traction among schools that have to play up in class often and who would otherwise get smacked.
1 and 2 we do look for as wing officials, but that count is usually triggered if we both signal that the man on the end of our side of the line is in the backfield. Then we have to do quick math.
3 is the umpire’s call, not the HL or LJ. BUT the whole point of the A11 is that it takes advantage of a “numbering exception” in the rules. IF you’re in a “scrimmage kick” (usually a punt) formation (whether or not you intend to punt) with someone at least 7 yards back in position to receive the snap, you CAN have players numbered 1-49 and 80-99 replacing players numbered 50-79 in those lineman positions but they’re still ineligible receivers by position.
The entire raison d’etre of the exception is because of tight ends and other skill position players who either snap for kicks or play guard or tackle in a punt or field goal/pat situation. Rather than have them switch jerseys (or put some sort of numbered contrivance over their jerseys) when they go to kick, the exception was put in.
No exception, no A11. Some states have outlawed it. It’s possible the NFHS will address it in the off-season.

Natural grass has it’s problems and is a concern - because of the retractable roof, certain patches don’t get enough sun.
This season they changed grasses in various areas throughout the season to get a feel for them. It started over a long road trip, I think, with grass that wasn’t on the playing field. That got good reviews, so over the ASB, they replaced the infield and now plans are to do the outfield for the off season:

I have timed a handful of games from the booth, while 5 man crews worked the field.

By having MLB change from the Sat/Sun, Tue/Wed/Thu, Sat/Sun format they’ve used on the World Series since 1985 to Wed/Thu, Sat/Sun/Mon, Wed/Thu to get more TV games during the week. Counter-intuitive, but this is baseball under Bud.
Originally they were going to start on Tuesday, but then pushed it back to Wednesday. This is all part of the new TV contracts.

Last thing - the Coyotes’ alternate is okay, but their home sweater is already great and this running dog logo can’t hold a candle to the howling head they have on their regular jerseys. It’s too similar a concept, but poorly-executed. It looks like a bag of dog food. Had they gone with a moon with a cactus or a pawprint or something, fine. Something “alternate,” not “kinda similar but with a different logo, and it has black in it, so would you please buy it?”

I live just north of St Pete. When Maddon announced he would start Kazmir for Game 5 there was nearly a riot. Kazmir was the top pitcher this team had for years but he became the whipping boy (along with Trop Percival) for the fans. It’s nice to see the population here get behind the Rays but listen carefully during the games… The fans boo called balls even if the pitch was 3 feet outside the strike zone. Any time a rays batter hits a deep fly ball EVERYONE starts cheering as if it were a 3 run blast. Then when the ball drops into the outfielder’s glove the place goes silent. The fans are learning. They’re not as up on the game as Boston, Baltimore, or St. Louis fans but let them have 5 more seasons of at least .500 ball and we’ll talk.

Thank you for confirming what I’ve thought true for quite some time……sleeve length isn’t much of an issue, but rather it’s become a style choice.
I’ve always wondered how on earth football players over the 1st 80+ years of the game managed to play with sleeves.
I think Replace The Sleeves needs to become more of a priority than Ditch The Black.
While I’m at it, how ’bout getting rid of that tape/glue that holds the jerseys (wrinkled) close to the body and pads!

As a long-time Bills fan, the rumor going around WNY is that 90 year old owner Ralph Wilson is loathe to change the current Bills uni’s/logos and leave all of that stuff to the next caretaker/owner. Kinda makes sense business-wise but the overwhelming number of fans I know love the throwbacks and wish the Bills would go with them full-time. There are many 20-somethings who like the all-blue look, but their numbers are not as strong.
Remember, as introduced in 2002, the blue jersey were supposed to go with white pants, but Peerless Price, then a WR on the 2002 team, was succesful in lobbying the team to go the all-blue look for their fourth game of the season vs. the Bears at home. The Bills won that game, and the all-blue look has been a staple ever since (the Bills have worn the white pants with the blue on several occasions when playing a road game in Florida. (What color pants will the Bills wear this week in Miami?)
The blue pants were meant for the white jersey in 2002, but sometime that year, the switch to white-on-white was also made.

Even in the inaugural season, they couldn’t sell out two games. That’s pathetic.
The notion that the fans will come out for a winner ais unproven at best. The Rays were the best team in the American League (if not the majors) all season long, and they couldn’t draw flies.
Yes, they sold playoff tickets. But we’ll see how they draw during the next regular season, but the results so far are far from a home run.

I was watching the Bills game and noticed that the blue of the main body of the jersey isn’t a bad color. If they ditched the piping and the side panel, it wouldn’t be bad, with the proviso that they ban the monochrome look. Not that I would suggest that in lieu of a return to the Joe Ferguson era uniforms or the late 60’s throwbacks they have been wearing. Both are 1,000 times better than the current disasters.
Regarding the Titans, I think the light blue pants with the white jerseys/light blue shoulder blocks actually looks good. When they put the other combos together, my eyes start to hurt.

Comparing the number of years that “my favorite team sucked” has always seemed stupid to me. When my wife was a medical resident, she’d say to her friends, “my night really sucked…I saw 12 traumas and only got two hours of sleep.” There would invariably be someone who shot back, “oh yeah? I saw 18 patients and got a half-hour of sleep.” But the thing is, both of those nights sucked.
Ten years of no WS in St. Pete sucks. It’s not 50 years, like we have in SF, or 100 like in Chicago (well, half of Chicago), but it still sucks. So why can’t fans in Philly, Cleveland, SF, Pittsburgh, Arlington, or wherever you live, all be long-suffering? Why does “your suffering” have to be greater than “my suffering”? Just because Phillies phans have pain, doesn’t mean Rays fans don’t.

I Entirely dig the “DC” logo for the Nationals. It’s unique and fresh in the tradition-heavy MLB. Not that tradition doesn’t have it’s place. Lord knows what would happen if the Spankes, BoSox, etc. added a cap logo. For example the Twins ditching of the “TC” for the “M” for 15+ years was a no-no; they’re both decent logos when used in combination. The Indians do this well too - the “I” cap and Chief Wahoo logo are a nice balance. The Giants, however, should ditch the “G” cap faster than unloading Zito.

I was in NY in 2004 the day the trade was made and it was getting unmercifully ripped THAT DAY by NY fans and media. There was no crime in trading Kaz, the crime was giving him away for shit. No hindsight, it was hailed then and there as a TERRIBLE trade by a GM who panicked at the trade deadline. Don’t forget, they brought in Kris Benson the same day, how’d that work out?

Agreed, you can trace trades to other moves that work out, but it certainly wasn’t the intent of the original trade whose end result was a -15 loss for the 2004 Amazin’s and the end Mr. Duquette’s career as a MLB GM.

Just got to the Alstott item on PTI. They stated that the “jersey” was retired.
Couple things. I hate when it is referred to as a jersey retirement. It’s a number retirement. Also, nothing I’ve read stated official retirement. Anybody know if that is the case?

Well no offense, but if they “clearly have no idea” about what the story is, then how are they making fools of themselves? If anything, it’s up to Tony Reali to correct their errors/oversights at the end of the show, and he didn’t, so I would actually put that on Reali.
It’s kind of like the comment in #152, where the Scott Kazmir trade is still obsessed about in New York, and pretty much nowhere else. Bucs fans may know the backstory about the misspelling on the jersey, but it’s silly to assume that the other 95% of the public is going to see it and automatically know, oh yeah, that was his rookie jersey from 1996 and it had a misspelling on it, and the one under the glass is the actual jersey from 1996. Why would they?
And the PTI guys, for all their faults, are not above talking about jerseys and how bad some of the designs are, especially Wilbon.

OK - I was at the Bears/Vikings game yesterday. Yes, Staley was dressed as Mr. T for a time - I don’t have a clue why. The funniest part was that he was doing pushups for the camera and struggling to do some one-armed pushups and they took the camera off him. Guy was exhausted for nothing.
I also noticed that the Vikings right corner - # 26 - Antoine Winfield had no purple socks at all for the first half. I told my neighbor that he had a fine coming - they didn’t believe me, they had no idea about the uniform cops - so I bet them…Either they’ll make him show some purple in the second half or he’ll get fined. Sure enough - second half - purple.

That does look similar to the tape you’d find used in rehab. I could surmise that it is to help hold his fingers in place (if he has an issue with them popping out of their sockets for instance) which acts by kind of supporting the ligaments. That would honestly be my best guess

One of the reasons the Rays don’t draw is because it needs to be a regional team. The demographics of the Tampa Bay area whon’t support three major league teams.
But you won’t draw from Orlando with a team in St. Pete. The Trop is in a horrible location. They should have built where the fairgrounds are, near where I-75 and I-4 cross. Then they’d draw from Tampa, St. Pete, Sarasota, and Orlando.

First off, thanks for the link to Mr. Botta’s blog, Paul. Absolutely solid article, and I wrote a piece about it myself.
On to business:
Considering that the Flyers wore their orange alternates a couple of times in the playoffs while Forsberg was there, it has to be very recent.
However, there is no official rule in the NHL rulebook that says the teams have to wear their normal home and road jerseys for the playoffs, so it has to be mandated by the Commish.
Anyone in NYC wanna ask Gary Bettman for us? ;o)

Since the Bucs are the first to use pewter, and it is not a particularly much-used athletic uniform color, you would think that it would be a tough color to match from helmets to pants.
The Bucs, and their uniform providers, to their credit, match the colors well and really pull it off.
My beloved Saints, on the other hand, can not seem to match any of the shades of gold on their uniforms, (the gold helmets do not match the gold numbers, which do not match the gold pants, which do not match the unnecessary colored yellow (should be gold) collars of the jerseys, and on & on & on) despite having had 40 years to do so and despite having the color gold a VERY COMMON sports uniform color.
And to my everlasting dismay, depression and disgust, their partial solution is to often wear black leotard bicycle pants that make then look like a junior college.
Makes ya really wanna scream, or at least appreciate the Colts wonderful simplicity ….

If the CHARGERS really want to be unique they should wear YELLOW/GOLD pants with the white jerseys only, and maybe with their powder blue jerseys.
Leave the white pants with the navy jerseys, as that is a pretty clean look. They can also get rid of the powder blue trim on the pants and numerals and helmet bolts as it is simply too damn busy. The powdre blue jerseys would still work with the helmets and pants without the four color trim.
That would be a nod to the AFL Chargers and would separtate them entirely from the rest of the NFL. The Chargers navy pants add NOTHING to their uniform or the theme that they seem to be trying for …..

My guess is that it was dressed up for Halloween seeing as the Bears have a bye next week. Living in Michigan, I’m not much of a Bears fan but I do like their jersey. The navy (which shade?) jersey is awesome and that Tang-orange one can go to hell.
