Mets reliever Ambiorix Burgos has been on quite a roll lately. First he allegedly beat up his girlfriend. Next came allegations of a fatal hit-and-run, followed by an arrest warrant and three months in the clink while awaiting trial. And now, as you can see in the photo above (taken nine days ago, although I wasn’t aware of it until Nelson Saint pointed it out to me yesterday), it turns out he’s been wearing the wrong team’s cap — and smiling about it! Of course, Burgos is no stranger to cap shenanigans, but this seems like a major breach of etiquette. Can’t the Mets now terminate his contract on the grounds of cuckolding or something?
New ESPN conlumn today — here’s the link.
Raffle Reminder: I’m currently raffling of an Ernie Davis throwback Syracuse helmet from Helmet Hut, just like the ones used in The Express. For details, look here.
Uni Watch News Ticker: The brutal Mr. Met decapitation that I reported yesterday is now up on YouTube. … Big news out of Tampa, where the Bucs plan to wear creamsicle throwbacks next season. … And the Titans may wear Oilers throwbacks. … Nicole Haase tipped me wise to this addictive site, which sells calendars and posters featuring vintage college football graphics (additional examples here, here, here, here, and here). … Also from Nicole: a great Chisox patch and a nice vintage MacGregor ad. … If you insist on referring to hockey jerseys as sweaters, then you’ll want to see this and this (with thanks to Jake Elwell). … Shorpy does it again. … Wanna own John Wooden’s car? You can! … The Tigers are selling off a bunch of authentic stuff tomorrow (with thanks to Brett Crane). … The Diamondbacks’ single-A affiliate, the Visalia Oaks, have renamed themselves the Rawhide and have a new identity system. … Kayce Harris was at Wednesday night’s Nuggets/Jazz preseason game and spotted a few Denver players wearing shinguards. … Startling news from the Meadowlands, where Equipped with Joe the Plumber Skiba now has its own theme song! … Texas Southern’s Willie Parker was having some major nameplate problems last Saturday (with thanks to Chris Mycoskie). … Remember those weird minimalist black uniforms that Oregon wore last season? Looks like they might have a white version this year (good find by Jaison Frank). … George Mason appears to be headed for SODLand.

why exactly does a team (in this case the
oilerstitans) need to give the nfl a full year to notify them of uni changes?is this so the nfl-licensees have time to crank up replica/authentics?
i mean, srsly, if the titans just broke out oiler throwbacks (say…this ting of beauty)…so long as their uni was ‘opposite’ (white or color) of what the opponent was wearing…what’s the big deal?
i know the
national felonno fun league needs absolute control over every aspect of the minutia surrounding uniform specs and shit, but…would it really be that big of a deal???#6 by Adam on 10.17.08 8:52 am |

I thought Bud Adams was on record as being against resurrecting the Oilers name and logo. I would like to hear from him, not Coach Fisher, before I believe this story.
Also, the article states that 2009 TEN-NYJ will be at “New Meadowlands Stadium”, but that facility will not be ready until 2010. Maybe for true AFL authenticity, they could play the game at Shea! (oh, guess not…)

As I mentioned before, this Quack thing has got me perplexed.
Based on my past experience that it resembles a rap group or artist’s T-shirt, I asked for some assistance from some experts in Rap and pop culture…my eighth and ninth grade students.
Nada!
However, I have three students in my eighth period class who are of Dominican descent, as is Mr. Burgos. Very sheepishly, they came to me and alerted me that the word “duck” in Spanish is a slang term for homosexual.
I speak Spanish and have had many Hispanic friends throughout my whole life but had never heard of this before.
Even so, I don’t know how that could POSSIBLY correlate with this, but it is a mystery!

Two things about today’s ESPN column:
1. The picture of first name above the number and last name below looks like it was from an old-timers game (sponsored by Schick) where everybody had their full name on the jersey.
2. If the NFL really did have a rule mandating initials for players with the same last name, how were the Steelers penalized for never using initials, from Davises in the early ’70s to Smiths this decade?

Interesting NOBs in the high school game on ESPNU last night. Some of the players for Cy-Ridge had standard NOBs – G. Vaughn. Others has the initial following the surname, like Jackson, V. and Williams, D. What is up with that? ANyone from that area know? Any screen grabs would be helpful, since I sadly don’t have any.
(The other team went NNOB, btw).

I’m inclined to agree. The new Cleveland Browns can claim to be the same franchise as the old Cleveland Browns. But they’re not; these Browns are an expansion team that has essentially played like one most of its existence.

I always loved the silver helmet era of the Houston Oilers. That uni is for me one of the underrated classics of the NFL (AFL originally). Another would be the white-helmetted Eagles of the early ’70s. My second Oiler choice would be the Blanda-era baby blues.

About the espn article – there were 2 Greg Adams on the Vancouver Canucks in the 90s. They were differentiated by their middle names – Gus and C. (can’t remember what it stood for…)

While at the Traverse City North Stars Jr A hockey game noticed a very odd way of distinguishing the brothers on the team. Their first initial follows the last name.

On the left you can see “Thompson M” no comma though.

In the ’70s, Wales’ national rugby team featured two players named “John Williams”. They were referred to by their initials, “J.J.” and “J.P.R.”

Totally agree on the silver helmeted Oilers era. Their very best of many uniform eras. Also wish they never would have gotten rid of the blue helmet from the early 70s Pastorini/Burroughs era.
I attended the first Saints game played in the brand new 1975 Superdome – the Oilers visited to play he Saints in the exhibition season and the blue Oilers helmets and jerseys were then my favorite in the league.
To my great disappointment they wore their white helmets for the very first time – Again, that was a big disappointment.
I also believe that may have been Bum Phillips very first game as Oilers’ coach.
