To some, having TV numbers of Western Kentucky is kind of a folly in itself. As in, “when is Western Kentucky ever on TV?” Touché.
But teams still have to have TV numbers. But if they look like that, I’d have to ask why they’re even bothering. And aren’t they supposed to be six inches? Or four inches? Or some standard size?
And no, for those wondering, Oregon didn’t wear its space duck leotard wondersuit (now with lazers and shit!) last night. That was the rumor, you know. In this situation, I couldn’t say, “Oregon, you’re dead to me,” because, well, you know … Bryan

Nope. Minnesota’s new jerseys don’t have them.
I wonder how long they’ll continue the all-white trend on the road? That’s probably my least favorite combination they have this year…

Virginia Tech’s new unis (you know, the god awful ones they wear with the alternate sleeve colors… the orange ones they’ve been torturing us fans with this season… seriously, we have worn Maroon jerseys for 10 years straight, and November will be the first time we actually wear a maroon jersey this year… wtf) don’t have TV numbers. Now, our ‘throwback’ LSU ripoffs have wonderful tv numbers, so I guess you could say we have them half the time?

The bad news is, those TV numbers are truly ineffective. The good news is, their helmet inventory doesn’t consist of pots and pans.

It’s not the size that counts for the WKU television numbers. The whole point is that TV number should be easily visible for identification purposes.

I imagine as long as they keep winning in them, they’ll stick with them. Personlly, I thought last week’s all-maroon was the low point. Very high school. Very Arena league. Texas, for one, seems to do just fine in white over white.
But you’re right, white-white takes some getting used to as a look for the Gophers. Haven’t been white-white since about 1957 or so.

Those Fleer photos must have been taken at a preseason or early season photo session or game, cuz Maynard started cutting off his sleeves supershort that year, so he ended up having no TVs (he’d have cut off the bottom half of the his “13″) while everyone else did have them.
That photo of Titans chasing Billy Cannon is from ‘60, of course. For Titans, no shoulder loops, darker (old) gold (the color they are mistakenly wearing now with the ‘61 unis), two navy stripes on pants (no white), plain socks. ‘60 was only year of that uni. Plus, was only season Oilers wore arabic numbers edged in red. For ‘61 and several seasons thereafter were standard white block numbers with no red on home jerseys at all.

The TV numbers on WKU’s uniforms look fine to me. Then again, I purchased my television sometime after 1960.
I could see how someone with a 13″ black-and-white television receiving a signal with a soon-to-be-outdated set of rabbit ears might have trouble making out the numbers on the shoulder/sleeve. However, in 2008, most televisions are able to clearly display practically a full spectrum of colors and contrasts. Rather clearly, too, I might add. (I have seen screenshots of the handwritten notes on shoes, caps, etc. on this very blog site)
I suppose what I am wondering is: are TV numbers really a necessity anymore? Is anyone sitting at home really having trouble figuring out who just made the tackle or scored the TD?
