I love when our President gets sports-related swag. Usually it’s fun stuff like jerseys or speedos and such. However, Team U.S.A.’s (both Olympic and Paralympic) recent visit to the White House was a little disappointing in this scope, as all Bush and the First Lady got were some jackets and an American flag that was flown in Beijing during the games. Snooze. Would have loved to see Phelps give him a his very own Razor, but from the looks of it, Bush seems to be thinking the same thing about dolphin boy that the rest of us are these days — “You’re kind of douchey.”
Also, best sunglasses in the crowd go to the guy at the top of this pic.
Have a glorious day everyone, and if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of Madison tonight, make sure to head over to catch Paul on his rock tour of middle America. Tickets available here. –Vince

So I’m loving the classic-uni matchup of Texas vs. Oklahoma, but … they enclosed the Cotton Bowl! I know a lot of us are members of the Stick With a Classic school, and I think it applies to stadia, too.
What was distinctive about the Cotton Bowl was its symmetry: Upper decks on the sidelines only. You’re flipping channels, you see a shot from a blimp, you know what stadium it is. Like the open end of the Orange Bowl.
Now it’s just another stadium. Sigh.

I haven’t been able to watch any of the Rays’ playoff games so far, but if any place needed a splash of color, it’s the Trop.
Terrible baseball (before this year) plus acres of gray? I can see where Central Florida has been slow to embrace the Rays.

I tried to run a search through here, so I apologize if I’m covering something that’s already been mentioned, but…
Has anyone noticed that Virginia’s football outfit has two different versions of the logo?
You can kind of see it here:

On the ball (and on the helmet, though it’s hard to tell from that pic) is the logo they’ve had for the past several years. On the shoulder, though, the swords are straight, not curved. The normal logo appears on both the helmet and on the ball.
Anyone have any ideas?

To answer the Phelps question:
I met up with some (female) friends at a bar while I was in Ann Arbor. They had just turned 21 and were celebrating. On my way I got a call from one of the girls saying that there was this drunk guy and his friends shamelessly hitting on them and not leaving them alone. So I pull up to the bar and they are outside and I see that Michael Phelps is the drunk guy trying to get them to go home with him.
I ask them if they wan’t a ride somewhere else and the 4 of them get into my car. Phelps goes berserk. He starts screaming at me, saying that he will “Fuck me up” (which he could, natch) and how I was being a cock block. After we left they told me he was just all over them and asking if he paid them money would they come back to his place with his friends.
Basically it could have just been his drunk state (we’ve all been there) but by the sounds of it he just does whatever he wants since he thinks he is hot shit. Whatever.

I was out today, doing a bit of “odds and ends” shopping, and I happened to wander through an older bookstore that really doesn’t get a lot of traffic.
Now, being a hockey guy, I was disappointed to find a distinct lack of hockey books. However, I did find a book that would be right up Paul’s alley, specifically due to its amazing photography.
Ballparks: Yesterday and Today is an amazing book. 448 pages of history of stadiums in every relevant MLB city. The book weighs 5.2 lbs! I picked it up for less than $20, but the history in this book alone is worth way more.
It’s a must-have for any baseball fan.

Cornell (vs. Harvard today) had shoulder loops that actually were shoulder loops, not some truncated, squared off stripe pattern that says, “We USED TO have shoulder loops.”
Looked great. Good for them.
And, yes, Texas and Oklahoma looked great. Not a bit of “black for the hell of it”. Amazing they could be any good, or the game could be any fun to watch, since obviously neither team understands that in order to play football you have to dress like thugs…er, um, video game manly men.

Smaller college games usually have some “generic” ball persons without any team identification but larger college games will have them in team attire for quicker identification by the officials.
Each team has a “spare” ball on each sideline. When a ball goes out of bounds or becomes dead outside the numbers, the ball boy (of the team in possession) will give the new ball to the official for spotting at the hash and then retreive the old ball (notice there’s never a delay in waiting for a game ball in college games).
So there are actually 3 game balls for each team. For the team in possession, it’s the ball in the game plus the spare on each side. For the team not in possession, the ball person on the press box (non chains) side has two balls. Balls on any change of possession go in and out on that side.
#51 by Mark K on 10.11.08 7:36 pm |
Oh and yes- each team will have their own brand of ball that they use all the time in practice and games. The visitors can choose to use the home team’s balls if they wish- they rarely will.
Also- there is no “kicking” ball as the ball in play on kick downs will be a random one from the 3 in use.
The officials check the balls before the game and maintain control of the balls throughout. They test for pressure and add air if necessary prior to the game. They’re almost always low.

Can Paul please ban the use of the words “douche” or “douchebag”? It ranks right up there with “I just threw up…”

Thank god there’s a website where it isn’t weird to say (and people know what you mean) that you’ve been waiting for “the duck feed”.
Okay, I’ll replace douche bag with “putz” or “johnson” from now on. Who’s with me? LOL

Okay, who turned on the italics?
Speak up, young man, you’re only getting the other kids in trouble.

Yes, Phelps may or may not be a douchebag and I have a strong belief that the Rays will pull this off.
