Hey kids, as you may remember Paul’s in Minnesohhta today. And like every business everywhere, we’ll party when the boss is gone. For example, I’m wearing shorts while monitoring comments right now. Only on casual Friday, friends.
But on to the issue at hand. I’ll have a full entry for you hopefully on Monday or Tuesday, but the rest of the time we’ll keep it pretty low key. This is so I stay sane, but also because I don’t have as much time on my hands as Paul.
Today’s topic: Derrick Rose’s undershirt is NBA licensed and approved. Good for him and his shirt. We’ve noticed a trend with undergarment logofication lately. MLB has started putting its logo just below the collar on the front of its undershirts, to better peek out between that perpetually open top button. The NFL puts its logo on everything. The NHL … I have no idea. Hockey guys, hook us up. Are there officially approved and logoed undergarments out there?
More importantly, do players need approved and branded apparel? Is it just another way to get that logo out there? Go on, let ‘er rip.

And now a quick word from Paul: Greetings from Minneapolis, where I had a great summit meeting last night with Ricko (that’s the man himself at right, admiring one of his own illustrations from around 1970). Details to follow in a week or so.
Meanwhile: In case you missed it yesterday, I’m now offering a $10 Distant Replays gift card with all new membership orders (for details, scroll down to the middle of yesterday’s entry). There was some confusion during the afternoon regarding some fine-print aspects to the card, and that has now been resolved, as follows:
• Contrary to what I wrote at one point yesterday, there is NO minimum purchase for the use of the gift card.
• The gift card cannot be applied toward clearance merchandise, however.
• Only one gift card per enrollee.
OK, back to Bryan for today’s Ticker. See you late next week.
Uni Watch ticker: This popped up in the comments yesterday — the Pacers went retro against the Hornets. … Martin Brodeur is tempting fate. Thanks to John Shabe for the tip. … Great Georgia gallery here from Brent Hardman. … Interesting debate here about ugly unis. Some funny, some not, according to Ed DiPrimio. … Nightmare fuel, for Paul at least, from James Huening. … This is the BBC Sport version of the ugly uni list, with thanks to Mark Campbell. … Vapo Rub will be banned because of this. Or not. Jeremy Whiting on the tip. … An article on the history of German soccer sponsorship is here. Interesting read courtesy of Tim Lewis. … Take that, JoePa! … Also in the comments last night, cameraphone pictures of the new Riddell Revo Speed helmet from Jordan Pope. Here you go, helmet guys. … Note to self: If you end up with a pair of Randy Moss’ shoes, don’t just toss them in your car. … Ever wondered how to put together a Florida State helmet? Go here.

There are a lot of different types of undies for hockey stuff. The NHL guys are allowed to use any brand they like, but the outermost layer of clothing (jersey, socks, and pant shells) have to be Reebok. Many players wear Reebok pant shells over other types of pants; those with endorsement contracts don’t bother with the shells. (Shells are just nylon outer-pants-like items that cover the regular breezers. The advantage is they’re cheap and come in lots of colors, so if I joined a team that wore blue pants, I could buy a $15 blue nylon shell rather than another pair of $150 Tackla breezers.) There used to be pretty much one type of undershirt, which was the light blue body/navy blue collar CCM ringer type. There aren’t many rules related to these. Alexei Yashin, for example, always wears a turtleneck. I personally wear a Nike dry-fit; my son wears some bizarro Champion body suit under his goalie equipment. Undersocks are optional.

Great blog, just found it-
In regards to hockey have branded under garments; Yes. The NHL has mandated that only Reebok apparel (not gear) can be visible for 30 minutes prior to and following the game. Locker room interviews seem to be big now, and Reebok being the official “hey we want this sport for us” brand decided to give the NHL money (that they desperately need) to monopolize just about everything in the sport.
Of course this doesn’t stop players from fidging the rules, or just getting dressed earlier, or stripping naked as soon as they’re off the ice.
It’s all a bit rediculous if you ask me, but all professional sports seem to be getting sponsorship money for everything they do in today’s leagues.

The different colored “K” on the UK jerseys is in honor of Bill Keightly, “Mr. Kentucky”, who died within the last 12 months. As a UGA fan, I don\’t know his place in UK lore, but I do know that he is being honored this season.
On a side note, I flipped through the UGA photos and noticed the 1980 UGA-Auburn photos. It is one of the few, if not the only, times Auburn wore orange football jerseys in a game.

Good find, BurghFan! I had forgotten all about that!
The Penguins took the opportunity to show off their potential new threads at home in Pittsburgh that night against the defending Stanley Cup champions in the Colorado Avalanche.
While the Penguins had filed to have the skating penguins as their only jersey, the NHL denied them from doing so in the 2001 offseason after Lemieux returned to the ice on December 27, 2000 to help the struggling franchise. He wanted to go back to the skating penguin, and, as owner, made it happen.
The 2002-03 season saw them return to the skating penguin logo permanently. Robo-Penguin was killed off. So technically, they did start the season in an “alternate jersey”, despite them wearing it repeatedly throughout the ‘01-02 season.

Hopefully, the base black shoes do not portend that there will be a base balck alternate uni. since I have NEVER seen UK wear black kicks.
BTW, those shoes are Nike’s big flagship entry into the basketball market this year. All of the Nike-clad olympians wore them this summer, as well as MANY, MANY NBA players in pre-season.

Alright…this “(color)-out” thing has gotten way out of hand!
Only a couple of schools can do the effect correctly (Penn State, Clemson come to mind).
So now Northwestern wants a “purple haze” against Michigan State, and MSU has announced that their game against Ohio State will be a “green-out”….
Stop the madness!!!
#35 by matt on 10.10.08 10:54 am |
The NHL … I have no idea. Hockey guys, hook us up. Are there officially approved and logoed undergarments out there?
in yesterday’s UW post of that horrid atlanta thrashers uni the guy looks like he’s wearing a thrashers logo mock turtleneck or crew neck undershirt thing (in a purplish/bluish shade that doesn’t match the trim of that awful sweater). don’t see any reebok marking in that shot, though.
#36 by JTH on 10.10.08 11:06 am |
At least “purple haze”, “whiteout”, “blackout”, etc. make sense. What the hell is a greenout? Are they actually calling it that? How about a “greenhouse effect” or something that actually makes sense and requires at least 1.7 seconds of thought?

Islanders at Devils
Blackhawks at Rangers
Panthers at Hurricanes

Capitals at Thrashers
Predators at Blues
Blue Jackets at Stars
The marquee matchup, uni-wise, is obviously Hawks/Rangers. Honorable mention to Islanders/Devils, perhaps?

however, one of the orig 6 (habs) vs. buffaslugs has potential if the sabes don their new third jersey (which i don’t think they are); despite the ‘new school lines and grey pit stains’…it’s still better than their current unimess…

From last night’s Canucks-Flames game:
- the Canucks will honour Luc Bourdon, who died in the off-season in a motorcycle accident, with a “LB” sticker on their helmets all season. The sticker was pretty simple
- at the last game last season, all the players threw their jerseys into the crowd. The couple that caught Boudon’s jersey (his last jersey as it turned out) came onto the ice to present it to his parents and fiancee
- finally, Tom Cochrane played a stunning acoustic version of Big League
There are pictures in Getty Images of the ceremony - very moving.

The 2002-03 season saw them return to the skating penguin logo permanently. Robo-Penguin was killed off.
I always liked “the corporate pigeon” as the designation for the Baldwin-era logo.
So technically, they did start the season in an “alternate jersey”, despite them wearing it repeatedly throughout the ‘01-02 season.
It was more than a technicality; not only was it a black jersey at home (part of the reason it’s so memorable was seeing visitors in white), but they were still wearing the pigeon with the Canadiens-like stripe on the road.

That picture posted before…never!
Paul Brown has been dead for 17 years.
BTW, what is that green dot on the back of the QBs helmets for?

Just a shout out to Paul–I was at the Magnetic Fields show tonight in Minneapolis. What put me over the edge to purchase tickets was your place on this bill and you certainly didn’t disappoint. You and Liz were both funny and a nice change from seeing an opening band that I don’t care about at all. Instead there were strange former-Taco Bells and obscure magazines. Fantastic and thanks for being a part of my birthday!

Until recently, the Rays used to have blue-outs, where people wore shirts that look like empty seats.

That is awesome.

Hahaha! I get a kick out of that jersey too (from N.Y., living in Virginia)! I think the Uecker jersey is in good fun, and actually looks kind of neat. I’m not one to say only “traditional jerseys look good”..even if I do tend to lean traditional…I’m open to all sorts of ideas (non-Fishstick Man ofcourse). I also love the “ball and glove” Brewer logo placement. Cool!

Has anyone else noticed the light blue color that’s very present in the Trop during Rays games? They must be selling that color merchandise pretty well. Methinks we’ll see an alt-jersey or BP jersey of that color next year….
