Hey, though I’m busy disowning trying to fix the Cubs, I’ve been keeping an eye on the other series. You know, because I love Frank TV, Captain Morgan, Holiday Inn Express, The Leverage, and — again — Frank TV.
So what have I noticed? Not that much, actually. I got a new iPod Touch so I’ve really just been playing a ton of air hockey. But check out Mike Lowell’s hand guard thinger. I’ve seen various versions of the hand protector before — Alfonso Soriano wears one against righties as a result of this (even though everybody knows it’s just going to be sliders in the dirt), and Jeff Bagwell always wore one after breaking his hand in 1994.
Lowell’s appears to be made from — or is at least similar to — the bottom plastic flap from a shin guard. He’s been wearing it for some time, but this is probably the best look we’ll get. How’s it attached? Velcro? Regardless, it’s cool stuff, other than the broken hand that made it necessary. — Bryan
Bonus coverage: I tried very hard to make a main entry out of this. I don’t know if there are words to describe it. Happy WNBA playoffs.

Message to football team opting for ridiculous “modern” unis (yes, talking to you Cincinnati, and others; jeez, between Bearcats and Bengals that city gets NO visual relief, does it)…
Tampa Bay Rays change to something traditonal and classic…and they start winning, big.
Something to be said for the notion that, if you dress like a bunch of clowns there’s always a danger you’ll play like a bunch of clowns.

Didn’t think the Rays looked bad recently, not at all, just saying a change to a more classic look seems to more often yield better results than going to something outrageous.
BYU, for example, has gone back to their “McMahon Era” look (navy insead of royal, though) and suddenly they’re playing more like those scoring machines of years ago.

Red Sox fan here. Yes, Mike Lowell’s hand guard is made from part of a catcher’s guard. The Red Sox made it for him last year after he injured his hand on a hit by pitch. It happened to him when he was with the Marlins so he doesn’t want to take any chances.
He said it doesn’t effect his swing and it’s quite comfortable. It’s attached to his batting glove by velcro.

At first, Wells had 3 for David Wells (Tek had 33, Wells’ normal number) and Renteria had 16, his Florida number. With the switch, Renteria got his St. Louis number from the year before, and Wells got 33, but halved and rounded down.

Yeah, that’s the fear, that they’re going to go with the racing stripe look ala 1982 – 1992. If it’s a thin stripe ala 1993 on the roads it might work; I always felt that was a nice look, but for some reason that uniform is reviled. But the mutlicolor piping down the front placket of the jerseys sounds like a clusterf–k to me.
I may be in the minority here, but the dropshadow doesn’t bother me in the least. I would, though, like to see them go with blue caps at home and on the road.
It could be worse, though; our team could be named the Blue Jays and have a predominantly black color scheme.
In last night’s post, Paul mentioned that the 2009 uniforms will be “almost identical to this year’s”, implying that there’s going to be at best a minor change. I’m guessing that the “1964-2008″ Shea patches are going to be gone, probably replaced by a 2009 Inaugural Season patch for Citifield, at least for the first home stand.

maybe because they lost 103 games? AY lost 27 straight (dating back to ‘92)…torborg was replaced by dallas and those awful granny eyeglass straps…they lost more games than the expansion marlins…and…im pretty sure they actually finished the season on a six-game win streak (so they could have lost 109!)
/and…wasn’t that the bobby boo-nilla earplug/coleman firecracker/sabes bleach year too? it was all so bad, those years are a blur

The answer to all this seems incredibly simple: Change the uniforms back to the way they were when the Mets beat the Orioles. With the 40th anniversary of that historic season rapidly approaching, at the very least it would be a fitting tribute.

True. That period is a blur to me as well. All I know is that, regardless of how bad the product on the field was, I always liked those roads (not really the homes, though. I never went for the underline on the home uniform). Wasn’t that also the period when they had the dugout jackets with the one orange sleeve? Surprised it took Nike so long to jump on that when they re-designed all those college football uniforms.
Then again, that was also one a period when the Mets were at their most fan-friendliest. My sister used to go to Shea all the time and they would have dugout tours, running the bases (on a regular basis), and all sorts of stuff to have fans come out to the ballpark. Of course, it was because the level of suck at that time was unbelievable, and they needed to do something to get fans to come out. Once they started being respectable again all those little “perks” were gone.

That’s brilliant. A tie-in with the 1969 Miracle Mets on their 40th Anniversary that would actually make sense and be aesthetically pleasing. Which means, of course, that it won’t happen.

I was listening to Joe Starkey, long time play by play man for the Cal Bears. setting the scene before today’s kickoff saying “Cal is wearing their white pants with some kind of swish on it with their blue jerseys. What have we turned into, the Oregon Ducks?” I almost drove off the road.
Five games, five uni combos. Mr. Starkey might be on to something:
vs. Michigan State: gold on blue
@ Washington State: white on white
@ Maryland: white on gold
vs. Colorado State: blue on blue
vs. Arizona State: blue on white (check the suspenders on the guy on the right)
Just as long as they don’t do gold on gold again.
They’ve never worn gold on gold – that’s West Virginia (and I think Minnesota did it too last year).

i was at the game, and mentioned that to my pops, who seemed oblivious to the whole thing. as i remarked on that to him, i felt a kinship in my heart with my fellow uniwatch brethren. it was a touching moment.

Actually, the Gophers have gone to a much darker maroon this year that tends closer to brown than it does to red. They aren’t anywhere near red in person (I’m a season ticket holder). Unfortunately, they do look red on TV. The BigTen Network seems to have some color issues.
I’m looking forward to the Maroon/White combo at home because White/White looked great on the road.

Ah, another Minnesotan, I see.
That means you probably know that, for quite a few years recently, every Gopher athletic team BUT the football and baseball teams wore maroon. They persisted in wearing a color much more toward burgundy (almost USC-like).
Glad to see the maroon come back (color should be same as Texas A&M or Mississippi State, for example). But not so much the all-dark of yesterday, though; kept thinking with Indiana in red-white-red the Gophers would have gone with the light gold pants.
Go figure.
Although I guess we all know that coaches who think about such things obviously are in the minority.

(Speaking of USC colors…Iowa State looked pretty damn good yesterday. Not exactly like USC, but certainly similar, and that’s a nice look.)

“…Frank TV, Captain Morgan, Holiday Inn Express, Leverage…”
I’m late to the party (was readying my costume in the van), but thank you Bryan. I thought it was just me who noticed that the same commercials were running over and over. It’s not just Frank TV this year, it’s all the ads. Is that a bad sign for MLB? Or is it just the economy?
And I’m over Cal Ripken Jr. That guy is all about himself — more than ever. Go away, and take all of your plugs for your business tie-ins with you. (And “Snake Eyes,” too.)
