Uni Watch Book Club: The Pro Football Experience

IMG_0231.JPG

When I visited Scott Little’s house last month, I got to spend a little bit of time perusing his bookshelf. One volume in particular caught my eye: The Pro Football Experience, a massive tome published in 1973. “Man, this is great!” I said, flipping through Scott’s copy (which he acquired, of course, at a thrift store, I believe for $6). To which he replied, “Dude, you don’t have that already? Are you kidding me?” I felt appropriately chastened.

But now I’ve got my own copy, and it’s a beaut (only cost me $8, too). The book is filled with lots of gorgeous design flourishes and details, and there’s a ton of spectacular photography, some of it in the form of gatefold fold-outs (Caitlin added for scale; Caitlin-free fold-out example here).

A few notes:

• The endpapers feature a really cool motion-blurred shot.

• Whenever I look at NFL pics from this era, I’m struck by all the arm padding and tape worn by the linemen — a stark contrast to the bare-armed linemen of today.

• Never seen anyone tailgating with so many eggs before. The photo was taken at Minnesota’s old Metropolitan Stadium.

This band played at Candlestick during 49ers games. Anyone know what the name refers to?

• I didn’t know they had inflatable helmet bladders as far back as the early 1970s.

• Remember when they had goal line flags, instead of pylons?

• I’m pretty sure I’ve linked to this photo before, but it sure is a doozy. Same goes for this one.

• Love the little handwritten uni numbers on the Browns’ helmets. Here’s another example.

• How great would it be to have one of these equipment bags?

Most of the other photos aren’t particularly uni-notable — just beautiful (additional examples here and here).

Want your own copy? There are several available here. Oddly, there’s also a “concise” paperback edition, which is smaller, shorter, and doesn’t have as many high-end production details (no fold-outs, e.g.). On the other hand, it’s much easier to fit on a bookshelf. If you want that one, it’s available here.

Uni Watch News Ticker: Dig it: veep trading cards (with thanks to Chris Ashworth). … If you choose to believe the next-to-last graf of this article, LSU helped pioneer the tearaway jersey way back in 1907. Key passage: “Before each game, [LSU coach Edgar] Wingard would soak [RB Doc] Fenton’s woolen shirt in a mild acid solution to weaken the fabric. The Cubans often were left clutching at air, as had opposing American players” (with thanks to Brandon Vogel). … This illustration from yesterday’s Ticker prompted the following from Andrew Ranck: “That cover seems to have been done by John Churchill Chase. He was a native New Orleanean who did various cartooning work his entire life. He taught classes on New Orleans History at Tulane and drew a lot of covers for Tulane football programs. He also wrote a great book about the history of various New Orleans street names (a lot more interesting then it sounds, I promise). There’s a gallery with a couple of his football programs here.” Wow, great stuff — I particularly like this and this. … Most pathetic “TM” symbol ever? Could be. Further details here (with thanks to James Huening). … Andrew Sherriff reports that Fordham has changed its logo from this to this. … Here’s something you probably haven’t seen before: Colorado wearing gold. “They wore this ‘retro’ design for their game against Baylor in ’98,” says Dylan Wilbanks. “It was supposed to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Folsom Field. Unfortunately, they were absolutely hideous — gold top, black pants and helmet, but 1998 numbering.” … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Great college all-star jersey available for bid here. … Big article in Pravda yesterday about outfield grass mowing patterns. … If you liked my recent post about helmet carts, then you’ll definitely enjoy this shot halftime at Super Bowl VII (big thanks to Nicholas Wollen). … Good spot by Matt O’Brien, who noticed the “Final Season” tagging on Maz’s jersey from Sunday’s stadium-closing ceremonies at Shea. … Alarming report from Joe Hilseberg, who notes that the Ravens’ chest wordmark, which in the past has always been black, was purple on Monday night. … The Rangers won some lame-ass trophy nobody cares about the Victoria Cup yesterday by beating Metallurg Magnitogorsk, 4-3. “Has there ever been a more fear-evoking team name in the history of sports than a bunch of Russians named Metallurg Magnitogorsk?” asks Robert Tusso. “I bet I can guess how many hours of focus groups went into that one. Makes the current American process for team ‘branding’ seem kinda weak, no? Ooohh, the ‘Thunder,’ scary.” I don’t have the heart to inform Robert that Metallurg Magnitogorsk is actually Georgian for “Spinal Tap,” so don’t tell him, OK? … At first glance, this looks like one of those Wisconsin cheesehead thingies, but it’s actually a Denver Broncos helmet-cam, circa 1965. “It was made by the defense contractor General Dynamics,” says Bob Jones, who scanned the photo from an old Broncos program. “The side of the helmet has the General Dynamics 1960s ‘GD’ logo with color bars vertically placed between the G and D. ‘General Dynamics Astronautics’ is printed below the logo.” … When you’re faced with an economic meltdown, global warming, and a looming energy crisis, there’s really only one thing to do: turn on all the lights. That’s the Cira Center in Philly, as photographed by Eric Trager. … Rugby note so most of you can skip to the next item from Caleb Borchers, who writes: “Rugby is one of those sports where teams wear their typical strip unless it clashes with the home team’s look. But Adidas has decided that that’s not lucrative enough, so next year New Zealand’s five Super 14 teams will adopt a home/road jersey program, for no other reason then to sell jerseys.” … “Where were these when I was 10 years old?” asks Rick Subrizio. “I would have spent my whole allowance on them.” Lots of similar products scattered amongst the same seller’s other items.

In that pic of the goal line flag it’s weird that they’re using the chains in a goal-to-go situation.

Kegs and Eggs

I noticed in last night’s Sox/Angels game that Ellsbury’s left sleeve had a swoosh on the elbow. What’s that about, and is it new? I’ve been watching the Sox and following Ellsbury since last year’s series run (I’m an Oregon State alum living in Boston, I can’t help it), and I’ve never noticed it until last night.

Really puts into perspective how close Eastern Conference Teams are. Also noticed that all teams used their primary logo on map. Expect for WAS, used secondary…

Duquesne University, in Pittsburgh, apparently got new football uniforms this year. While the old ones were nothing special, the new ones are absolutely hideous:

The Red Garter is a defunct North Beach tourist trap featuring Dixieland jazz, red flocked wallpaper blackened by cigarette smoke and the ever popular leggy girl on a trapeze wearing–natch–a red garter. This was probably the house band playing before a game.

some alarming news for cubbies fans…they are winless in playoff series (NLDS, NLCS or WS) when they drop the first game of that series…0 and 10…so…what will happen this year?

Paul - that book is awesome. I especially love the shot of the Giants in Yankee Stadium.

Chase also did program covers for University of Texas home games from 1953 to 1965 as well as some Texas-Oklahoma games. I have about 25 of these framed on my office wall. He also did Georgia Tech home covers for several years. I was thrilled to find and purchase a book containing all of the GT covers on the Georgia Tech campus a couple of years ago. Sorry, no pics with this message since I’m working. Will send some along later.

Wow, Colts jerseys…with stripes… ALL THE WAY AROUND THE SLEEVES!
What wackiness!

The Cubs were using the same “It’s Gonna Happen” phrase last year. Don’t you have you stop using it at some point or will it just beome their permanent slogan?

that #80 in the padding shot is Dolphins TE Marv Fleming.

Not sure if you meant it this way, but it’s made by TSN - Washington had no say in what logo they put on there.

Also, for what it’s worth, Magnitogorsk came into being in Soviet Russia during Stalin’s time. It was an mining and steel town that produced steel at astonishing rates. So essentially, the Rangers defeated the “Russian Steelers.”

The jersey w/letters/numbers stickers that Rick Subrizio submitted are availale anywhere scrapbooking supplies are sold. I wouldn’t expect youse-guys to know about that girly stuff. They also have embroidered team logos, tiny felt pennants and bas-relief replicas of some of the current ballparks. One of my sisters scrapbooks and I have some lovely scrapbooks of my baseball travels with these items in them.

The reason for all the tape and padding on the O linemen in the older pics is that lineman used to be able to block with forearms only. When I played little league football they taught us to put our fist just above the heart, with elbows out. So to protect our forearms we wore arm pads (the tape helped them stay on because after a few games and washings the elastic would start to wear out, plus alot of us had our older brothers hand-me-down pads). Now of course they can block with their open palms, thus eliminating the need for all the padding.

And just to add to that, the team that has won Game 1 of an NLDS is 23-3 in those series.

Paul - that book is awesome. I especially love the shot of the Giants in Yankee Stadium.

I have the book. It is an absolute must. Paul’s gallery really doesn’t do it justice, just because you cant cover 225 pages. The photo are huge, they are so big you could frame most of them.

Before heading out, I glanced though mine. The eggs are from the fans chapter. Disappointed Paul didn’t include the shot of the two guys wearing FULL Skins unis, pants and all. One guy is playing a snare drum. Funny thing is, I went to my first RFK game in 1991 and those two guys were STILL wearing them 20 years later.

I know not uni related, but a subject that Paul talks about, it is just sad when any public space is now up for sale

I guess “It’s Gonna Happen” doesn’t necessarily mean what is going to happen is good, just whatever it is, it will happen. I think I will sell “optimism shirts”, TOMORROW. . . IT’S GONNA HAPPEN or I JUST TOOK (EXLAX, Viagra, etc.). . . IT’S GONNA HAPPEN

The Cubs were using the same “It’s Gonna Happen” phrase last year. Don’t you have you stop using it at some point or will it just beome their permanent slogan?

When we went to Wrigley this summer every time the O’s scored a run our group all turned to them and yelled, “That just Happened!” They scored 11 runs that day! The fans didn’t really bother us about it.

Magnitogorsk is a mining and industrial city in the Russian Ural Mountains; know for its steel mills. “Metallurg” is a metal worker or metal works.

So, a rough translation would be “Magnitogorsk Steelers.” Sound better?

Now “Traktor Chelyabinsk,” that one doesn’t translate as well…

I’m not sure if this website has been mentioned before, but it’s a company that sells NFL Uniform Wall Frame Art, which features framed artwork detailing each pro team’s uni evolution over the decades. The same website sells NFL Stadium Replicas (with removable domes where applicable), as well as college football stadium and NHL arena replicas. It’s all pretty pricey, but a fun browse nonetheless.

exactly larry!…perhaps i wasn’t clear in my post…ON PURPOSE…its ambiguous at best and speciously optimistic at worst…

i mean it’s gonna happen sooner or later…

right?

Exactly right. You beat me to it.

Geez, what is the deal with Mets pitchers and their run-ins with the law?

I watched the Ranger game last night. It was exciting (as far as exhibition games go). Metallurg is owned by an iron and steel company…although I dont speak Russian, it’s easy enough to translate.

That’s right. Linemen weren’t allowed to use their hands until they changed the rules maybe around 1978 or so.

Awesome use of a Ricky Bobby quote.

For the record, the New Orleans illustrator’s full name is John Churchill Chase. That’s the name you’ll find his books under. If you search for John Churchill alone, you’ll only find the Duke of Marlborough!

The band you’re talking about that played in Candlestick very well may be a conglomeration of high school bands. My dad played in Candlestick at one point in the early 70’s (I think it was 71, which would have been fall of his senior year) as a member of a marching band, so I’m going to put two and two together. I’ll ask him to be sure… but there’s a chance here, people.

The 1970’s had its share of problems. But NFL uniform designs were not among them.

Look at how wonderful the original Falcons logo and uniforms were. Why on earth would they distance themselves from that?

Agreed. Though I was not a Falcons fan, they wore my favorite uniforms of the ’70s. When they got away from that look, it was a sad day.

No, they were not using it last year. Nor are they using it this year. It is not, was not and most likely never will be “their” slogan.

It’s this guy’s slogan and I doubt they’re interested in seeing him make any more money off of it.

Yep. When I first heard they were changing their look, it was reported that they were going with new helmets and I remember thinking “OK, the black helmets will probably look great with the red jerseys.” And they would have, too.

Ugh. New Fordam logo NOT an upgrade.

Though I preferred the Falcons’ red jerseys to the black, this is one of my all-time favorite football cards from when I was a kid. There weren’t enough action shots in those days, and this looked so freakin’ cool to me.

Whoever made the map is also geographically deficient. The Dakotas are combined as is Idaho and Montana.

WHOA!

Over the past five years or so, approximately skatey-eight bajillion Pats fans have told me the story about how the Pats once had a “mascot contest” during halftime, with fans being instructed to “vote” via applause for either Pat Patriot or a proposed replacement mascot. Pat won, so that was the end of that, but nobody has every come up with a photo of what the proposed replacement looked like (although several people have told me he bore at least a very superficial resemblance to Flying Elvis). Could this illustration be it?

Sadly, after last Sunday’s performance by the Packers and Jets, I would much rather watch the Jets. (yes I know they played Arizona..). It gives me an AFC team to cheer for. With the lack of performance by Rodgers and Grant, and the injury bug on defense, I fear it’s over for the Pack this year.

Let me rephrase that: When the Falcons did the re-design in 2003, they used the new black jerseys as home jerseys for one year. Since then, they have used red as the primary home jersey.

Obviously, they’d been using black for more than one season prior to 2003……

You know this answer already, JessinMKE: Because you were a Packers fan before you ever heard the words “It’s pronounced ‘farve,’ as in carve.” Or, it’s hit you that you love Favre, but you love the Packers more. That’s my guess. :)

Twiedy hit the nail on the coffee table regarding the book. Paul has only scratched the surface with those (admittedly excellent) scans.

If any of you feel like going hunting for it …

… this site specializes in rare and out-of-print. I’ve been happy with their results.

Aw, Caitlin makes for a GREAT barometer for–well, anything. She and Tucker need to be featured more. Maybe in Mets’ ensembles? No, scratch that–cats should not be dressed up.

That eggs and tailgating party from the Met is awesome. Now, that is the parking lot for the Megamall. Sad, so sad.

it’s lweidy … (”L’ as in “Larry”) ;)

remember when we were last discussing the saints black pants and unitard look (you know…this one…)

why can’t they bring this look back, if they have to wear the black pants at all? stripes and white socks really make that look so much better

You know it Tom. As my best friend pointed out, there is a green G tattooed on my leg, NOT a picture of Brett Favre…

Didn’t Paul do an article on tattooed logos once? (Trying to stay on topic…)

I second the motion. While I maintain my opposition to NFL teams wearing pants in any color besides white/gray/silver/yellow/gold, if they insist on doing so, at least include stripes so as to avoid looking like total twits.

Agreed, and the stipes should be “conventional,” waist-to-knee style, not those silly “knife-blades” foisted on many contemporary teams.

70’s Falcon unis were a nice look. Clean, uncluttered. The red helmet w/black falcon is a classic in my book.

As I recall, when the Falcons were founded, their official colors were red and black and gold and white, honoring, respectively, Georgia and Georgia Tech. Are these colors still official?

Good point. You are exactly right. I should have made that clear, as I would not want any tapered madness to slip into the mix.

In this photo, the cigarette dispenser may be even better than the equipment bags.

Ha ha, Phil. If I had a nickel for every “e before i” I’ve seen, well, I’d have a lot of nickels. No problem on the ‘T’ either, although I’ve made the proper adjustment.

Another note, pretty appropriate Longo puts up the first run for the Rays. Some might say Crawford, Baldelli, but this guy made himself the face of the franchise in less than one year.

The Saints don’t wear that pant style because…wait for it…IT LOOKED LIKE CRAP
all the posters on this site do is bitch about how things never look as good now as they used to…blah blah blah…
(insert old man bitching at teenagers for wearing baggy pants comment here)
hey, Arcie Bunker, this isn’t the 70s, the 50s, or ehwatever decade you think was ‘the golden age’ of uniforms
i like the broncos piping, if for nothing else, it’s a nice change than every team wearing waist to knee stripes.
Whether or not you think it looks good, constantly complaining and bitching about how old uniforms are universally better is 1) annoying 2) completely unfounded.

there are museums to visit and shorpy and even Paul who will link you massive amounts of old photos of unis you’re sure to drool over.
Enough already

I’m not sure if this website has been mentioned before, but it’s a company that sells NFL Uniform Wall Frame Art, which features framed artwork detailing each pro team’s uni evolution over the decades. The same website sells NFL Stadium Replicas (with removable domes where applicable), as well as college football stadium and NHL arena replicas. It’s all pretty pricey, but a fun browse nonetheless.

I bought my brother a Packers one of those for christmas a few years back. They’re pretty cool
