Did you know that the Georgia town of Hoschton (pop. 1700) has been trying to break the Guinness World Record for “most scarecrows in one location”? Right, me neither. But it’s true. And reader Brent Hardman, who lives near Hoschton, has found an unlikely uni-related storyline amidst all the stuffed figurines:
A few weeks ago I was driving home a different way and came upon a scarecrow football game. Notice that the numbers on the UGA players appear to be pretty accurate, while the orange team (insert any of UGA’s hated orange-clad rivals) are all wearing zero. I guess they used baseball batting helmets because that’s what they had on hand. Pretty cool how DIY it all is.
And how. As awesome homespun projects go, this one is right up there with Little Fenway. The teams are set up on a little gridiron, complete with goalposts (here’s a wider view). They’ve got fans in the bleachers and along the fence, they’ve got cheerleaders on the sidelines (here’s a closer look), they’ve got a ref, even a UGA mascot. It’s all pretty freakin’ adorable.
Wanna know more about the Hoschton scarecrows (most of which aren’t uni-related, although there appears to be a soccer player and a Nascar scene), there’s a really good video report here, news accounts here and here, and lots of photos here.
Uni Watch News Ticker (fully bold-enabled, by popular demand): The NFL has put together a nice photo gallery of throwback games. … Reprinted from yesterday’s comments: Joe Hilseberg was was recently at M&T Bank Stadium and took a photo of this great chinstrap reminder sign. … I’m a few days late with this, but the Flames will have an alternate jersey next season (thanks, Teebz). … Matt Takimoto notes that Cal has been wearing a “BB” decal in memory of former marching band director Bob Briggs. “Is this the first time a football team has honored something to do with the band before?” he asks. Good question. Anyone..? … Much hilarity on my daily Page 2 conference call yesterday over this item, which notes that Sebastian Janikowski “set a Raiders record attempting a field goal from 76 yards out against the Chargers.” Hey, I can break that record, easy — I’ll attempt a 100-yarder! A 106-yarder! And after that I’ll break the record for the highest pole vault attempt and the most ribs eaten in one sitting (I’ll probably just eat a dozen or so, but my attempt will be for 317). To succeed is human — to attempt divine! … Here’s a decent glimpse of the Sixers’ anniversary patch (with thanks to Mike Preston). … The double-A Chattanooga Lookouts recently changed their affiliation from the Reds to the Dodgers, which means a new uni set (with thanks to Michael W. Vines). … Marketing knows no bounds (thanks, Bry). … No, I mean it really knows no bounds (kudos to Ryan Burns). … Brendon Yarian recently visited Canton and came back with some great pics of stuff I hadn’t seen before, including special facemasks worn by Doug Williams and Dan Dierdorf, some cool program art, Jim Thorpe’s cape, and an Otto Graham jersey that had to be renumbered after a rule change. Lots of other good stuff in this slideshow. … Judging by this shot from Pistons Media Day, it looks like Rasheed Wallace is switching from No. 36 to the 30 he wore at UNC and in Portland (good spot by Ethan Crooks). … Yesterday I linked to some pics of jai-alai jerseys and passed along Steve Bevacqua’s query, “Does Champion still make jerseys like this?” No surprise to get a response from sporting goods maven Terry Proctor: “The old Champion plant in Perry, NY, is still in operation as American Classic Outfitters. ACO has all the old Champion patterns and lettering fonts at the Perry plant. They even used Champion-style numbers on a set of football jerseys they did for Livonia High School two years ago. As to the jai alai jerseys. I spoke with my contact person at ACO. She explained ACO is now the contract manufacturer for Adidas/Reebok — they make all of the NBA and WNBA uniforms in Perry. She told me the jai-alai shirt would be a basic pattern but would have to be ordered through Adidas/Reebok and carry one of those labels (apparently ACO no longer is able to sell product under their own name). So yes, the shirt would be available, but I think they would only be affordable to Donald Trump.” … About two years ago I wrote an ESPN column about eye black. Now Brian Farkas says that column inspired his family to start a company. Read all about it here (click on each thumbnail, then on “All Sizes,” and then on “Original”). … Lots of interesting NOB action on the Toledo football team, as seen here, here, and, rather bizarrely, here (great work by Drew VanNess). … Jen Muller scanned some pages from the 1975 Yankees yearbook (when the team was still playing at Shea). Highlights include a description of the Bronx renovation, a gallery of Family Day portraits, and an incredible demolition company ad. … As long as she had the scanner warmed up, Jen also sent along some pages from the book Baseball’s Hometown Teams: The Story of the Minor Leagues. If this photo is any indication, we’re all gonna need to get a copy of this book. Also, check out these shoes, these socks, this sweater, and everything in this shot. Striped cuffs!!

I knew he had speedometers on his mask in reference to the ‘Motor City’, but never noticed the coolest detail. Instead of normal numbers on the speedometers, he has the DET retired numbers on them.

Looking through the NFL gallery you linked to, I saw the Mascot gallery. 1st picture: what is this guy wearing? Caption says it’s a Redskins fan, and that fits with the #21 (Sean Taylor), but the jersey is all sorts of wrong.
The red is too red (’Skins are more brick), but that could be the photograph or lighting. However, the stripes are very off – Skins have one gold and one red stripe on their sleeves and their collars are solid red. At first,I thought it was the Chiefs, because the color of red is closer, but the Chiefs have white collars and only 3 stripes on the sleeves.
I found a similar jersey for sale on a Philipino website, so it looks like it’s an official Reebok jersey. I guess it’s just a really bad job.

So you have the standard team-color and white jerseys. For a third jersey, a team may have an alternate or a throwback.
Alternates: No special helmet, no special pants, and the jersey must be the same basic design as the home or away, the difference being a color swap where a non-dominant team color becomes the alternate’s primary color.
Throwback: Has to be a total throwback representation. As accurate as possible with modern fabrics, and LNOB to comply with modern rules.
Examples: Giants: alternate. See blue, insert red. Jets: throwback. Not just Titans jerseys, but appropriate pants, socks, and lids.
So why not? The Seahawks could probably get an approved throwback design in the immediate fture if they wanted one.
By the way, teams can’t showcase a throwback and an alternate in the same year. (Reason: only 16 games in regular season, so too many variations ruins identity.) When the Eagles donned their Angry Parakeets of Scandinavia throwbacks, the black alts took a break. On that note, the Lions have the solid color throwbacks ready for Thanksgiving (75th anniversary celebration), so their black jersey will too collect dust this year.
Clear?

NHL goalies aren’t allowed to wear a captain’s C?
What the hell?
This is a rule that goes back quite some time. In fact, the first thing I thought of when I heard that Luongo had been named captain was “but, Goalies can’t be captains!”.
I think the rule, basically, is that a goalie can’t be an on-ice captain, and it’s probably because he’s on-ice permanently (and it’s against the rules to leave the crease). Obviously, a team can name ANYONE captain, but no goalies on-ice, hence no “C”.
According to Wikipedia:
“Goaltenders may not be designated as captains or alternate captains because of the logistical challenges of having the goaltender relay rules discussions between referees and coaches and then return to the crease. The last NHL goaltender who served as team captain prior to this rule coming into effect was Bill Durnan of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1947-1948 season.”
#40 by steve on 10.01.08 11:10 am |
The TSN article about Luongo (sp?) being the first goalie captain since the ’40s explained the rule.
The last goalie to be captain spent alot of time out of the crease talking with the refs. he would do it at times to kill the other teams momentum, a free timeout.

Jim, I saw Howard’s mask last night in the Montreal-Detroit game, and it is a beauty. I haven’t been paying attention to how well Conklin has been playing, but Howard played fairly well last night. He got beat by two beauty backhands in the shootout, but he looked alright otherwise. Maybe there’s still a shot for him to be in “The Show” this season?
As for the goalies being captains, Bill Durnan used to abuse the rule and skate the length of the ice to speak to the refs. Because other teams complained that it was giving the Canadiens a free timeout every time he did it, it was outlawed, and the goalies could no longer be an on-ice captain. However, Luongo will serve as the off-ice captain for all events. Willie Mitchell will speak to the refs primarily, and Mattias Ohlund will take all the ceremonial faceoffs. Ryan Kesler will also serve as an alternate.
Giving Luongo the captaincy is a ballsy move by Vancouver, and it really shows their commitment to him as a player.
Other notes from last night? Max Pacioretty, wearing #67 for the Habs last night, was outstanding. If this kid doesn’t make the big squad, Bob Gainey needs his head checked. The backhand he used in the shootout that beat Howard? That was a big-league backhand. I haven’t seen a rookie pull off a backhand like that since the days of Lemieux and Jagr.

What may have been a certain hue of blue looks different on wool than it does on polyester or whatever they presently use. I recall Paul or someone posting something along these lines. He showed an original Charger powder blue with a modern-throwback and the different coloration was noticible.

Howard still has options left to go to the minors without going through waivers. Conklin doesn’t so he’s more likely to stay in the NHL while Howard goes to AHL. He might still get 2-3 games this season, but expect Conklin to get 15-20.
I expect Howard to ge tthe back-up role next year.
As for Pacioretty, he is amazing. He’s making it hard for MON to not use him. He’s going pro after only a freashman season at UofM where he was a point per game player….as a FRESHMAN!

What about the Texans’ red pants paired with the red alternates? Since they don’t wear the red pants with anything else, wouldn’t they be considered “special pants”? Or perhaps because the pants follow the same template as the other Texans uniform pants they’re not considered special pants?
And despite the fact that they only have three jerseys, the fact that the Titans have about 1,385.56 different uniform combinations dos more to ruin team identity than it does using an alternate and a throwback in the same year. Just my opinion.

The Rays uniforms look a lot better to me now then they did when they were first introduced before the season. Suddenly, instead of being boring, they are classic and traditional. The wordmark on their chest now looks no-nonsense and confident. The blue color appears strong. Their old unis (which I liked) now look kinda “Mickey Mouse” and remind me more of their horrible original duds. And the futility of the teams that wore them. Winning has changed my perception.

Original Titans (1960): Navy and Old Gold. No white on unis except facemasks, sweatsocks and shoe laces. No stripes on jerseys or socks, just two navy stripes on pants
1961 and 1962: Current throwbacks almost precisely accurate EXCEPT the Old Gold from 1960 with lightened markedly, more toward the Steeler gold of today.
Search ebay for “Al Dorow Fleer” (and then most all other Titans cards from that year) and you’ll find a football card showing the gold as far, far lighter and brighter than what the Titans wore Sunday.
The Jets really did a great job on these throwbacks, unfortunately, though, when it came to getting one of the colors right, it was a swing-and-a-miss.

“On the cover of the Boise State media guide is a player hoisting a sledgehammer — a tradition that began when Petersen took over in ‘06, where a ceremonial sledgehammer is awarded to the player who makes the biggest hit on special teams.
That, of course, is another page borrowed from Oregon (3-0, 1-0 Pacific-10 Conference). Bellotti still crushes various inanimate objects with a green and yellow sledgehammer during halftime to get his team fired up. And it still works: The Ducks have outscored opponents 42-0 in the third quarter this season. “

This probably as already been posted. But you can have fun making your own nba jerseys. It even lets you make the jersey just one big Adidas logo. About time for that.

ORIGINAL BENGALS UNIFORMS ?????
I once saw a 1968-1969 NFL pamphlet with the BENGALS wearing Orange jerseys (!!!) with black numbers and white numeral trim, with their original helmets and pants. QB John Stofa was modelling the never-worn orange jersey and uniform.
Anyone know the backstory on that …. ?
numeral trim.

That college all star jersey is outstanding! If I get a few extra bucks in my pocket this weekend, I may have to hire that guy who advertises here to make me one.

I don’t like the old NFL throwbacks the way I do the MLB ones. I’d love to see the Cards playing in their old “Gashouse Gang” style uniforms for example.
On the other hand, the NFL throwbacks look cheap. I thought Baltimore was playing the Western Michigan Broncos rather than the Steelers Monday night.
Also, it looks REALLY weird when just one team wears it.

I never thought I’d actually see Matt’s name listed on Uni Watch… Alas, one uniform manager had to make it on from the band! Way to go Matt.

[...] Actually, this is just the tiny town of Hoschton, Georgia trying for the Guinness World Record of “Most Scarecrows In One Location.” Hat tip to the readers of Uni Watch for finding this. For more details and creepy pictures, go here. [...]
