Did you know that the Georgia town of Hoschton (pop. 1700) has been trying to break the Guinness World Record for “most scarecrows in one location”? Right, me neither. But it’s true. And reader Brent Hardman, who lives near Hoschton, has found an unlikely uni-related storyline amidst all the stuffed figurines:
A few weeks ago I was driving home a different way and came upon a scarecrow football game. Notice that the numbers on the UGA players appear to be pretty accurate, while the orange team (insert any of UGA’s hated orange-clad rivals) are all wearing zero. I guess they used baseball batting helmets because that’s what they had on hand. Pretty cool how DIY it all is.
And how. As awesome homespun projects go, this one is right up there with Little Fenway. The teams are set up on a little gridiron, complete with goalposts (here’s a wider view). They’ve got fans in the bleachers and along the fence, they’ve got cheerleaders on the sidelines (here’s a closer look), they’ve got a ref, even a UGA mascot. It’s all pretty freakin’ adorable.

A week ago or so I linked to DET goaltender Jimmy Howard’s new mask. Watching the DET/MON game last night (thing of uni beauty BTW), I noticed something I didn’t before. I knew he had speedometers on his mask in reference to the ‘Motor City’, but never noticed the coolest detail. Instead of normal numbers on the speedometers, he has the DET retired numbers on them.

Looking through the NFL gallery you linked to, I saw the Mascot gallery. 1st picture: what is this guy wearing? Caption says it’s a Redskins fan, and that fits with the #21 (Sean Taylor), but the jersey is all sorts of wrong.
The red is too red (’Skins are more brick), but that could be the photograph or lighting. However, the stripes are very off – Skins have one gold and one red stripe on their sleeves and their collars are solid red. At first,I thought it was the Chiefs, because the color of red is closer, but the Chiefs have white collars and only 3 stripes on the sleeves.
I found a similar jersey for sale on a Philipino website, so it looks like it’s an official Reebok jersey. I guess it’s just a really bad job.

Rasheed Wallace used to wear #30 with the Pistons in 2004 when they won the championship.
I guess his brother died in the off season at the age of 36…hence the change to 36. No idea why he decided to change back.

Does anyone know of a link pertaining to the rules that an NFL team must abide by regarding throwbacks? A more specific question is; can a team wear throwbacks if they’ve only been in their new unis for say 6 years; i.e. Seahawks?

By the way, teams can’t showcase a throwback and an alternate in the same year. (Reason: only 16 games in regular season, so too many variations ruins identity.) When the Eagles donned their Angry Parakeets of Scandinavia throwbacks, the black alts took a break. On that note, the Lions have the solid color throwbacks ready for Thanksgiving (75th anniversary celebration), so their black jersey will too collect dust this year.

This is a rule that goes back quite some time. In fact, the first thing I thought of when I heard that Luongo had been named captain was “but, Goalies can’t be captains!”.
I think the rule, basically, is that a goalie can’t be an on-ice captain, and it’s probably because he’s on-ice permanently (and it’s against the rules to leave the crease). Obviously, a team can name ANYONE captain, but no goalies on-ice, hence no “C”.
According to Wikipedia:
“Goaltenders may not be designated as captains or alternate captains because of the logistical challenges of having the goaltender relay rules discussions between referees and coaches and then return to the crease. The last NHL goaltender who served as team captain prior to this rule coming into effect was Bill Durnan of the Montreal Canadiens in the 1947-1948 season.”

The TSN article about Luongo (sp?) being the first goalie captain since the ’40s explained the rule.
The last goalie to be captain spent alot of time out of the crease talking with the refs. he would do it at times to kill the other teams momentum, a free timeout.

Were those NY Titans throwbacks from Sunday really accurate? Something about them didn’t seem right. The blue was a very dark midnight blue, like the Yankees’ blue, whereas I imagined the Titans in a more medium blue. I remember Ricko saying something about the way Titans unis get misrepresented – if he’s reading this post could he address the question?

Dan Dierdorf’s Pro Bowl helmet reminded me that he played in an era when the “head slap” was legal… slap that, sucka!
As far as Roberto Luongo being Captain Canuck, what would be so wrong about this? (Yeah, I know it’s a crummy Photoshop job… I’m an old goalie, not an old artist!) The reason there hasn’t been a goalie captain since Bill Durnan in 1947-48 is referenced in this article, which says:

Blackout was in effect at the Cell last night for the 1-game playoff. I was told it didn’t look that great on TV, but in person it was definitely a cool sight to see.

Jim, I saw Howard’s mask last night in the Montreal-Detroit game, and it is a beauty. I haven’t been paying attention to how well Conklin has been playing, but Howard played fairly well last night. He got beat by two beauty backhands in the shootout, but he looked alright otherwise. Maybe there’s still a shot for him to be in “The Show” this season?
As for the goalies being captains, Bill Durnan used to abuse the rule and skate the length of the ice to speak to the refs. Because other teams complained that it was giving the Canadiens a free timeout every time he did it, it was outlawed, and the goalies could no longer be an on-ice captain. However, Luongo will serve as the off-ice captain for all events. Willie Mitchell will speak to the refs primarily, and Mattias Ohlund will take all the ceremonial faceoffs. Ryan Kesler will also serve as an alternate.
Giving Luongo the captaincy is a ballsy move by Vancouver, and it really shows their commitment to him as a player.
Other notes from last night? Max Pacioretty, wearing #67 for the Habs last night, was outstanding. If this kid doesn’t make the big squad, Bob Gainey needs his head checked. The backhand he used in the shootout that beat Howard? That was a big-league backhand. I haven’t seen a rookie pull off a backhand like that since the days of Lemieux and Jagr.

He showed an original Charger powder blue with a modern-throwback and the different coloration was noticible.

The Rays uniforms look a lot better to me now then they did when they were first introduced before the season. Suddenly, instead of being boring, they are classic and traditional. The wordmark on their chest now looks no-nonsense and confident. The blue color appears strong. Their old unis (which I liked) now look kinda “Mickey Mouse” and remind me more of their horrible original duds. And the futility of the teams that wore them. Winning has changed my perception.

This was noted a couple of years ago, but some newer readers might not know — the Otto Graham jersey changed from 60 to 14 when the Browns left the All-American Conference for the NFL. The AAFC had adopted standardized numbers — QBs were in the 60s, RBs in the 70s, among others.

I don’t like the old NFL throwbacks the way I do the MLB ones. I’d love to see the Cards playing in their old “Gashouse Gang” style uniforms for example.
On the other hand, the NFL throwbacks look cheap. I thought Baltimore was playing the Western Michigan Broncos rather than the Steelers Monday night.
Also, it looks REALLY weird when just one team wears it.
