Well, if nothing else, they at least looked like the Mets. I don’t think it’ll be much consolation to the Mets fans who hang out here, though. And I suppose you could make a doomsday joke about how they really did look like the Mets. (They lost, by the way, and fell a game back in the wild card.)
So skip that part and just look at the uni. No black. Pinstripes. One would hope that particular combo is worn twice more on this Shea-ending homestand, and perhaps even for another week or so. Any longer than that and Ron Santo will lose what’s left of his mind. — Bryan

As a hockey guy, there’s no way you can define Newman’s legacy in Hollywood with just Slapshot, but Reg Dunlop was the best part of that movie.
There just aren’t very many Reg Dunlops left in hockey, and Newman played the role so well. Honestly, he will be missed for his amazing acting prowess, and Slapshot will be watched tonight before my hockey game in honor of both Newman and Dunlop.
RIP Mr. Newman. You’ve certainly earned it.

New Royals first baseman Kila Ka’aihue is the first major league baseball player with an ‘okina in his last name. A few NFL players of Hawaiian or Tongan or Samoan ancestry have had them; I remember Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala’s being a straight line up and down, while Joe Salave’a has a deluxe ‘okina that is a bit more complex that the standard up-and-down apostrophe (although maybe if anyone on the Redskins had an apostrophe, it would have looked like that too).
The Royals didn’t give Kila an ‘okina in high-A ball with Wilmington, or in AA with Northwest Arkansas, and the Omaha Royals don’t have NOBs, so we were all surprised and gratified to see the ‘okina on his major league jersey once he was called up at the beginning of September. But as you can see it is just sort of wedged in there, with the two A’s not any farther apart than they would be with no ‘okina at all.
Meanwhile, still in the minors, his younger brother Kala Ka’aihue has had an ‘okina throughout his time with the Mississippi Braves, though I can’t find any pictures of him at lower levels. The Braves are taking a more generous approach to Kala’s ‘okina, treating it as a separate character, taking up as much space as a hyphen would between the two A’s.
How have NFL and college football teams treated ‘okinas in the past? I hope none of them have been simply ignored like Kila’s was in the low minors.

I study Okinawan dialects, and we have the same problem — if you don’t include some kind of marking for the glottal stop at the beginning of a word or syllable, people will say it wrong. Diacritics to the rescue!
