Tulsa wore a throwback uniform (an inaccurate one, at that) for its home opener against New Mexico on Saturday. This is the normal Tulsa look, and here are some alternate throwback pics. For something pretty simple, there’s a lot going on there.
Depending upon how far you want to take things — the correct answer is always “too far” — both teams were wearing throwbacks. Take a closer look at New Mexico. Does that template look familiar? It should — Miami wore it a few years back (like in 2002). Good to see Nike is recycling. Everybody knows that’s good for the environment, if not for the eyes. — Bryan

The Tulsa football throwback is no different in its inaccuracies than, say, the powder blue throwbacks the Toronto Blue Jays wear, which didn’t have belts back in the ’70s and ’80s. The university is at least acknowledging that it’s not an exact replica.
#2 by Jared on 09.21.08 7:55 am |
Why call it a throwback if it isn’t a throwback?
The Bluejays don’t consider theirs throwbacks. They call them Friday or Sunday uniforms.

I know that championship and locker room hats/t-shirt talk is often frowned upon on this site, but I found it interesting that the Rays wore hats and shirts with their “9=8″ slogan on it (some of the later pictures in the gallery above). The shirts even have the hideous MLB postseason logo on it which makes me think that it is official MLB merchandise. The Cubs yesterday (and Angels a while back) got their division championship gear but since the Rays only clinched a playoff spot for now, they couldn’t break those out yet and I guess wanted an alternative.
For those out of the loop, “9=8″ was Joe Maddon’s saying in spring training that 9 players playing hard and working together for 9 innings equals one of the 8 playoff spots in October.

“Flashback Fridays began in 2006 to coincide with the Blue Jays 30th anniversary as a Major League Baseball franchise. In 2008, the Blue Jays will continue to build on the success of Flashback Fridays with the re-introduction of their royal blue road uniforms. A throw back to 1985, the uniform features the original Blue Jay logo on the middle of the jersey and an elastic style belt. The team will wear the retro uniform for every Friday night home game at Rogers Centre.”
Anyway, there’s no one “official” definition for “throwback”. Even if the purists here don’t agree, I think most people think of something like the Blue Jays uniform as a throwback, even if it’s not exact.
#5 by Dixie Man 1957 on 09.21.08 10:10 am |
Sadly, they call them “throwbacks” so people will part with their hard-earned money…for it’s all a money grab. If, MLB, for example wanted to institute a “TRUE” throwback mode, it should mandate a return to pants mid-calf…stirrups…caps worn straight and true…jerseys that fit correctly…!!!
TRADITION–TRADITION–TRADITION…and don’t get met started with the NBA!!!???!!!

Pretty sure they’d sell the exact same amount if they used the word “throwback” or if they didn’t. Anyway, pretty much everything about sports is a money grab, so it’s not surprising that selling uniforms is, too.

New Mexico has actually worn that template for a few years. They haven’t updated like the other schools that followed Miami. It is no different then a plethora of teams taking up the Broncho’s horned look.

Just to clarify, the style that New Mexico is wearing is called the “Corvallis” in Nike’s catalog (and it’s also been worn by Oregon State, thus the name). That style may be a few years old, but its still a current offering in 2009. So yeah… it’s not recycling, it’s not old, it’s just a template being a template. No biggie.

I can hardly pay attention to Giants/Bengals, the Bengals’ uniforms are so ridiculously low-rent.
Those uniforms always looked terrible, but it seems like they’ve deteriorated. Shiny panels with the same pattern as an adjacent matte panel, orange nameplates that don’t line up with the orange shoulder panels, peel-and-stick stripes… They just look absolutely bush-league. Embarrassing.

Stopped off at the HHH Metrodome today to watch the Vikes and Panthers play today. Aside from the downgrade of the Vikings unis a few years ago (and aside from the well established anti-purple Uniwatch stance) not a ton of uni-related things going on from our view in section 239. That is, on Mars. I did spot a strange trend in the player’s parking lot though. Many cars had the and most had the manufacturer’s badges taken off. So removal of logo creep on the cars being replaced with advertising for the owner. One thing was for sure – there was enough chrome on those cars I could use the grill as a mirror.

And they’re doing it right too. Period authentic unis, if the player played during the years of flannels, they get flannels. Every former player seems to be in stirrups (all low cut, no high cut for 70s players unfortunately).
The actors representing the starting lineup for the first game there- long baggy sleeves, no logo on the jersey…
All unis seem to be authentics…
The one issue is that there are majestic logos on some of the jerseys.
And first pitch by Babe Ruth’s daughter. Nice touch.

Phil, my NY memories don’t go much further than 1986 so anything I remember (and the Mets stuff is foggy) doesn’t go beyond that.
Do I remember correctly hearing Olivia Newton John during the “Magic Is Back” era?

i am a student at UNM and those are not our throwbacks. Yes, nike gave us Miami’s old unis, but those are our current ones. They have been for a couple of years. And tulsa can wear whatever they want, they stacked over 600 yds on us.
