Baseball’s “patriotic” lids reappeared this week to mark Sept. 11. Much like when they were worn the first time on (and near) July 4, there appears to be no set protocol whatsoever.
From Friday: Athletics, Angels, Mariners, Pirates, Padres, Dodgers, Royals (who played Cliff Lee’s Indians), Giants, Rangers.
Is it just that particular day? Is it the day after, too? What about the rest of the weekend? Well, probably not on these guys. At first, I thought it was a game-by-game thing. The Angels and Mariners are squaring off, both in stars and stripes. And the Giants and Padres are sans flag hats. Similarly, the Pirates are playing the Cardinals, both in special hats, while the D-Baacks and Reds are without.
But the A’s and Rangers are playing each other, too. A’s have regular lids. Rangers love god and country.
Funny how MLB can’t figure out what to do with these things after the intended day, but they had a pretty good idea how to use them to make a pile of money raise money for a veterans cause. –Bryan

Whatever. I don’t see any problem with different teams having different rules as to when the caps are worn. It’s sort of like how towns and cities across the country choose to fly the flags. Some will have them flying only on July 4 or Labor Day, while others may keep them up for longer stretches of time.

I don’t have any issue with when these teams wear the cap (even if it looks like crap). My issue (of course) is with the Mets. In the past, they always wore caps of the first responders and I thought it was a great, unique way of honoring what happened.

Man, I can never turn to this website and not hear a complaint about something (and before you say it, I know I don’t have to tune in). How can it be a problem that a sports company has a uniform template but if the teams don’t all wear the special caps the same day it’s an issue?
Just my opinion.

I feel similarly about the caps but my bigger problem is the fact that they look terrible. Even when a team has a chance to make them look alright they can’t even figure that out. Thursday the Cubs wore them with their royal blue tops. Why not wear the all grey road unis and soften the blow. As for the Pirates well they are just screwed. The navy, white, black, white, and yellow getup just doesn’t do it.

Any chance that some of the teams wearing the hats on Friday were doing so because they didn’t play on Thursday? And why are half the teams in that list wearing normal hats?

Congrats to Cliff Lee on a stellar season with a subpar team. Fortunately, I think the Tribe has one of the most underrated uniform designs in the Bigs (especially since they dumped that ugly home alternate vest)

White Sox-Tigers were rained out last night in Chicago. Apparently, the ChiSox were to wear a green uniform. Anyone know the story behind that? Also, they are making it up today as a double-header. So will Chicago wear the green unis for game 1 and then wear their normal uni for game 2? Or will they again be rained out? Stay tuned!

It was the annual “halfway to St. Patrick’s Day” game. Green hats (looks like they went back to real fitted hats instead of the cheap ones this year) and green pinstripes. Okay, it’s certainly possible that I’m either stupid or blind, but here are two things i noticed:
1. In the main picture, as well as the ones from the Giants and the A’s, the people aren’t even wearing Ameri-caps. (Dodgers and KC are basically impossible for me to tell, since their caps are usually blue).
2. It looks to me like the Angels’ pitcher in the picture is wearing the jersey, a short-sleeved red shirt, and a long-sleeved burnt orange shirt.
So the general synopsis of my comment is this: why?
#24 by LarenR on 09.13.08 12:58 pm |

Your not blind, but you may have missed the message. The point of the main post was that on 9/12, some teams were wearing the Stars & Stripes caps and others weren’t (pics showed examples of each). Bryan asked why everyone wore them on 9/11, but some were still wearing them the next day.

I hadn’t noticed the socks, Chris. But I’m glad Hull had to wear white shorts. Otherwise, I would have had an even harder time telling the two teams apart.
You’d think, with the Prem practice of a new away kit nearly every year, there could be better coordination of opposing uniforms. Especially with Hull having a home shirt that stands out from the crowd:

With that pumpkin shade of orange, I’d have no trouble picking Hull’s players out from among the Magpies, you know?

It’s not really the negativity per se that bothers me, its the random and contradictory negativity. If you want to complain about leagues and manufacturers that are too rigid and enforce uniformity too much, that’s fine. If you want to blame leagues and manufacturers that allow too much freedom or non-uniformity, that’s fine. But you can’t do both.
Today’s post is a classic example. If MLB had passed down a dictate telling teams exactly when to wear 9/11 tribute hats, you would have been complaining about how the MLB wanted to stifle individual expression. It’s obvious that the MLB hasn’t done that, and so you criticize them for allowing too much freedom for individual teams.
If some teams want to wear them just on 9/11, fine. If other teams want to wear them for the whole weekend, fine.

My reading of the post is simply, “what’s going on here?” Why do some teams continue to wear the special caps while others do not? MLB usually is pretty consistent about this kind of thing, but it’s weird that this time they aren’t.
So, yes, inconsistent complaining is annoying, but, no, it isn’t really going on today…

I was at the Virginia Tech game today, and even though the unis looked ugly on TV…they fit in perfect for the school spirit focused theme of “Virginia Tech Orange Effect”. Some 60,000+ rocking orange. I saw more orange today, than I will ever see for the rest of my life. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a football crowd wear the same color as well as the Tech crowd did today. If the crowd is really into it, and the team played along with the jersey color…I don’t see the harm. They did look much better in person than on TV, but that might be a skewed opinion because all day, all I saw as orange. Alas, they beat the all-white, gold helmet (insert *yawn*)Yellow Jackets.
