Kentucky went monochrome on Saturday, while Norfolk State most definitely did not. I really don’t like the all-blue look there — it’s the definition of unitard.

But Norfolk State … now you’re on to something. I’m guessing it’ll be a pretty polarizing look. Me, I like it in a low-budget high school sort of way. It’s different than everybody else, but probably because they were dug out of the old storage closet or something. Unfortunately, monochrome still wins. — Bryan

people bitch about monocrhome in football like its a crime. Bt in each ofhte other 4 major sports, monochrome is accepted and almost obligatory, (ya know except for the wizards gold disasters)
so why not in football? i think it looks just damn fine.
i’d rather see all blue broncos with the side piping than their disgusting Orange jerseys with white pants, and things of the like.

Florida wore all-blue, against Miami’s all-white.

Change just for the sake of change is…not always good. Sometimes is just the sign of someone who’s easily bored, or who always thinks anything they do automatically will be an improvement over what someone else has done.

As to monochromatic, it really does depend on the color combination and the design, doesn’t it. To me, monochrome works best when it’s top-to-bottom, like the Broncos unis you show. But I find exceptions to that, too. West Virginia in all gold (with navy helmets) last year, for example. The were so freakin’ fast that it gave them a kind of “lightning in a bottle” look that worked. It’s all about what we each find pleasing…or displeasing. I know I just can’t get into a light helmet over dark jersey and dark pants (like that one Jets combo, or Oregon yesterday). Don’t know why, just looks odd, and low budget high school, to me.

Central Florida? Well, it IS a unique look, I’ll give them that. And they ARE the Golden Knights, right?

Monochrome unis look awful but add in the kickers shoes and its absolutely horrible.

http://sports.espn.g...

i agree. monochrome looks good when it is all monochrome. the ravens brag about their all black uniform but for some reason, they wear white socks. all black would look way better.

LOL. Not trying to change anyone’s mind here, just explaining.

Gotta be a generational thing. Has to do with how old you were when you starting noticing such things. For me and lotta guys my age and a bit younger, our kneejerk reaction is that a guy who shows up in black socks is a geek who doesn’t even own a pair of athletic socks. However, I’m getting used to them and in some cases they work great…on a team where black or navy (like Michigan; really like them with Michigan’s homes) is one of the team’s two predominant colors. In other words, to me black socks still look a little dippy and out of place on a team like Ohio State. Or Miami. Or Indiana. And probably always will.

Generally speaking, still like white laces in black shoes, too (if with white socks, of course) cuz back then black laces in plain black shoes was seriously old-fashioned and looked, relatively speaking, like street shoes.

Hmmmm…hereabouts our choice of noon games is Lions-Falcons or Jets-Dolphins.

Geez, everything—including the teams’ uniforms—make that decision a no-brainer.

I’m guessing those opting for the Lions-Falcons could get together in someone’s kitchen.

Those are actually “football boots” or as we call them, “soccer shoes”. They are in the Ronaldinho line by Nike. A handful of the Redskins secondary were wearing them last year in the yellow/,aroon Portugal-like colorway!

http://www.soccerevo...

Different line but same result:
http://www.soccergif...

Antonio Cromartie, the rookie DB on the Chargers last year, wore these.

http://sportswrap.be...

http://www.pe.com/im...

As opposed to these Nike Huarache 2k4 cleats, which were originally made as basketball shoes, but quickly converted into a very popular line of football cleats.

http://i1.chargers.c...

Oh, and sometimes he wears actual FOOTBALL cleats, as he did in the Pro Bowl with these Super Speed D by Nike:

http://static.nfl.co...

Just noticed, Norfolk State looks like Aquaman.

Well, considering the naval base there and all, maybe not so bad.

Generally speaking, still like white laces in black shoes, too

The last pair of Chuck Taylors I bought came with black laces, and it annoyed me to no end.

Anyway, onto my point of the day: Coco Crisp’s batting gloves. Looks like he ripped the Franklin logo off.

For Central Florida, we dropped the “Golden” a few years back and now we’re just the Knights. However, in the campus bookstore, they’re selling black jerseys with gold accents that I’ve never seen before that I THINK they’re going to wear for the homecoming game against Southern Mississippi on November 8. I’ll try and get a few pictures of it on Monday when the bookstore reopens.

Maybe it’s just cuz I’m from outside Green Bay, but the Green & Gold combo of Norfolk state looks dandy to me.

I’m also sad to think that there won’t be any Green & Gold in the NBA next season now that the Thunder is in town.

Don’t know what sports have against Green in general. Only two basketball teams left (Celtics, Bucks), three NFL (Eagles, Jets & Packers), one baseball team (Athletics) and maybe two NHL teams (Stars & Wild) that wear it primarily. As American as I am, I still get sick of all the teams that stick with Red & Blue.

BTW, last night, someone was asking:

1. What color combo did the Ducks wear yesterday:

http://www.nmnathlet...

2. And didn’t one of their players from Mississippi choose to play at Oregon simple because of the unis?

Yes, his name is LeGarrette Blount, and he is the player pictured above. And he really hails from Florida, but attended JC in MS.

http://sports.espn.g...

http://goducks.com/V...

So how can Norfolk State get away with wearing colored jerseys on the road? Doesn’t this conflict with the USC/UCLA rule (i.e. one team has to wear white jerseys)?

Granted, they’re not very dark, but neither are UCLA’s. And I’d even say that Norfolk State’s jerseys are darker than UCF’s home jerseys.

I like the look of both teams in colored jerseys, as long as they contrast. I follow international rugby somewhat, and it can lead to some beautiful matches.

Kentucky has a QB named Randall Cobb? Any relation?

Also, in a matchup of 2 green/gold teams, my alma mater almost took down a Division I school!

“As American as I am, I still get sick of all the teams that stick with Red & Blue.”

Yup, variety is suffering, that’s for sure. Hate the attitude that there is a certain palette that’s okay and everything else isn’t “jock-tough” enough.

As I’ve said before, god forbid anyone should want to be DIFFERENT or enjoy the experience. We know what a crime that is (see “No Fun League” and that sorry-ass penalty that cost the Washington Huskies yesterday).

Tired of the “sports must be grim and combat-like” attitude. It isn’t about who looks like they’d be tougher in an alley fight, or who looks most like a character in Halo. No, wait, I take that back, evidently these days it is. For a lot of people/teams, anyway.

You must not have seen Oregon v. Oregon St. last year.

I very much like both sides in coloured uniforms. If the colours don’t clash then let them wear their regular uniforms. Take the Sunday NFL fixtures, Lions and Falcons would be fine, as would Chiefs - Patriots and Vikings - Packers, no need for whites there.

I hate to be way off topic here, but I think what Oregon is doing with Todd Doxey’s number is one of the cooler thing I have seen when it comes to honoring a fallen teammate. Its had a couple weeks to settle in now, and just watching the players and how excited they get when they get to wear 29 is amazing. (I’m go to UO, so I get to see the guys off the field in the week leading up to the game). I’ve never really seen anything like it.
Now if we can only hide those yellow helmets somewhere where nobody can find them (did you know that they are required by Nike to wear them at least once a season?)

At least we know how they’re going to handle the Upshaw patch with teams that currently have patches on the right side. Looks a little cluttered though.

Speaking of awful..this might be the last Fox pre-game I ever watch. All comedy skits. More love for Strahan than I can stomach. I need to find a pre-game that focuses on…The Game. THAT’s it. Wow, this is terrible.

Just got a call from my buddy that lives in Baltimore, he’s on his way to Steelers bar and he’s listening to Ravens pregame. Said they’re saying Ravens wearing “throwback” pants today. Black with thick white stripe from their first year. Jon Ogden is part of the crew and he’s clowning them because they were so ugly.

Just thought I’d mention because I didn’t see anything about the Ravens in Paul’s NFL preview

This isn’t unusual. Sometimes teams wait until the regular season to debut new uniform components. In 1992, the Bucs did not wear the orange pants until the regular season started; same in ‘98 when the 49ers went back to gold pants. Harbaugh wore white at home during the preseason, but those black pants are ugly. I’m surprised the Ravens have never worn purple pants. Or how about old gold? That would look sharp.

Mizzou’s gold pants look sharp with both black and white jerseys. I like the all-white look too, but gold goes well with anything (look at LSU).

I hope the Jets make the Super Bowl…FOUR patches for Brett!

Coaches are nuts. It’s 90+ degrees and Mangini(sp?) is wearing black and Sporano is wearing a jacket.

Rams in blue over white today. Why? The gold pants are fine. As long as the throw the blue pants into the Mississippi River.

When was the last time the Saints wore white at home?

A bit off-topic here, but interesting uni-related nonetheless. A Mississippi State player is facing the dilemma of which uniform number to wear for rest of the season. Keith Fitzhugh, who normally wears #1 as a result of his late sister requesting it in a dream, wore #22 yesterday, which was the number of Jamar Cheney, who was injured last week and is out for the season.

Fitzhugh said: “Me and him, we’ve talked about it, and he really doesn’t mind if I do. I lost a little sister, and I had a dream she told me to wear number one. So, it’s a big toss‐up right now. I’m just going to talk to my family and talk to Chaney.”

When was the last time the Saints wore white at home?

2006 vs. the Bengals

No captain patch for Big Ben in Pittsburgh, or any of the other captains (Ward, Farrior, Reed)

Another Steelers note, the GU 63 patch doesn’t look so bad on the black jersey because the black all blends and you can’t really make out how big it is.

When was the last time the Saints wore white at home?

2006 vs. the Bengals

Well, that was quick! Do they do that often?

If memory serves, the Jets wore their 1977-89 uniforms (white facemask, no black trim) in the 1990 preseason before debuting the updated version (black facemask, black trim, green pants w/ white jerseys) in the opener against Atlanta. Anyone else remember?

True. True. The good old days when he was proclaiming innocence, so people could say he was being persecuted and make a “statement” (of course, once he actually was been PROSECUTED he fessed up, and all those people looked pretty stupid…and gullible).

I think next softball season I’ll get an extra jersey with each player’s number…so I’ll have one to wear in case a teammate’s wife makes him stay home to mow the lawn or something. An event of that significance shouldn’t go without a proper tribute.

does anyone know why the eagles are wearing the white jerseys at home, i thought they usually wear green

A lot of teams wear white at home in the early part of the season when it’s hot. White reflects, rather than absorbs, sunlight.

Because it’s like 1000 degrees and they want the rams to suffer in their dark blues. It’s a common practice for a lot of teams to wear white at home in the early months of the season, including Tampa Bay and San Diego.

A new star is filled in every year that a player is captain (max of five stars).

Guess the Ravens’ pregame was full of shit, those are the black pants from the blackout kit that someone already eluded to.

You’re right. Then why in the heck did Appalachian State wear all-black in 92-degree Baton Rouge against LSU? Surely they’d have white pants to wear.

Because LSU had the choice as home team (Yeah, like they would ever travel for an out of conference game) and they always wear white at home anyway.

I’m no Chad Johnson fan, but I think this is a bunch of cr*p. Since when did the NFL get involved with what amounts to a civil dispute between players and endorsers? He was dumb enough to change his name to Ocho Cinco, yet the league orders that he be referred to as “Johnson”? I don’t know, maybe they are calling him a johnson in a disparaging manner… Reason # ochenta y cinco why I am not a fan of the NFL.

By the way, does anyone realize that ocho cinco is…..nevermind….

If memory serves, the Jets wore their 1977-89 uniforms (white facemask, no black trim) in the 1990 preseason before debuting the updated version (black facemask, black trim, green pants w/ white jerseys) in the opener against Atlanta. Anyone else remember?

I believe you are correct except that the current uni’s have a green facemask, not black (it’s a dark green).

No, he’s completely correct. He’s taking about the Jets’ 1990-1996 combo that was similar to the 80’s uni, but with black trim and facemasks. They then went to the current throwback set in 1997.

but yes, they wore the old combo for the pre-season then debuted the black trim combo for the regular season.

Sorry, Geeman. I didn’t read your post very well. I have no idea why App. St. would wear all black, unless that’s all they have..

I guess they thought if they had to wear black jerseys, why not black pants, but it just looked hot.

A lot of teams wear white at home in the early part of the season when it’s hot. White reflects, rather than absorbs, sunlight.

Very true, but how does this explain the Saints, who play indoors?

Browns wearing white at home, forcing the Cowboys to wear their dumb blue jerseys.

You’re absolutely correct (and so is he). The idea of a Jets season opener, 2 Mets games, and about 4 hours of paperwork has left me with a few brain farts during the day.

Also, in a matchup of 2 green/gold teams, my alma mater almost took down a Division I school!

Your comment reminded me of when Oregon played Colo. State in the Freedom Bowl. No time right now to look for pictures, but Ram coach Earle Bruce outfitted his team in green-and-yellowgold uniforms that were basically a mirror image of UO’s. Made a very interesting game visually.

link to a few pictures of Kitna and the Lions today. If you click the correct picture, you can see the patch clutter. They went with the GU patch above the captains patch.

also notice the nike swoop on the bottom of williams’ shoe in the main pic.

Personally, I don’t love the monochrome, but it is ALWAYS better than a colored jersey, with darker colored pants (see: Cal, Norfolk St., West Virginia, Titans occasionally). THAT to me is the worst possible choice,

Hmmmm, me thinks the Pats won’t EVER wear white at home again (I had Theisman flashbacks watching Brady go down).

Gold can be worn either as the “home” jersey or the “road” jersey. Yesterday during the all-directional Florida game, UCF wore its usual home jersey (gold), and USF wore the road whites. UCF has worn the gold jersey during a bowl game where the other team wore the dark jersey.

Gold is the only color you can get away with this, which is strange, seeing how teams that wear brighter colors such as powder blue or orange would contrast with dark-colored jerseys of some opponents. Still, the NCAA doesn’t budge.

Interesting discussion above about LSU’s wearing home whites, purples, and occasionally golds (and purple pants on the road), and about teams wearing dark-colored jerseys in the same game.

except for the fact that sac state is a D-1 school

Sac State is Division I in everything but football, where they are I-AA (I refuse to use those other designations).

does anyone know why the eagles are wearing the white jerseys at home, i thought they usually wear green

You’re right. Then why in the heck did Appalachian State wear all-black in 92-degree Baton Rouge against LSU? Surely they’d have white pants to wear.

I believeAppy State has ONLY black pants with their uniform. I went to school up in that area of NC and haven’t seen them in anything other than black pants in many years.

Now if we can only hide those yellow helmets somewhere where nobody can find them (did you know that they are required by Nike to wear them at least once a season?)

http://goducks.com/V...

I didn’t realize they were required to wear them. If they HAVE TO… they should wear them with the white jersey and yellow pants. I think that would be the combination that looks best. Maybe the green jersey wouldn’t be bad, but definitely the yellow pants with the yellow helmet.

The current throwback set debuted in ‘98, but it’s all the same. Looks like I had a brain fart as well, as the Sack Exchange-era uniform debuted in ‘78, not ‘77.

The Jets wore the 1963-77 jersey and pants with the new green helmets in preseason in ‘78 before the full uniform appeared in the regular season. There’s at least one pic confirming this in the ‘79 yearbook, which I remember but can’t find for the life of me. The ‘78 yearbook is filled with nice photos of various NYSE-era Jets in the old uniform, including Richard Todd, Wes Walker, Joe Klecko, Bruce Harper, Jerome Barkum, Greg Buttle, Abdul Salaam and Pat Leahy. Oddly, there’s no mention of the new uniforms in the yearbook, although the new logo (angular JETS script with the plane-like tail on the J) appears on the front cover, title page and centerfold, and a graphic of the green helmet is on the page with the Personnel directory.

I’ve noticed that the captain’s patches on the NFL unis have a row of stars under them. I just saw Jake Delhomme’s patch had two that were gold and two that were white. Favre only has one gold with three white. Is it for how many years the wearer has been a captain? Does anyone know a reason that isn’t just my speculation?

What, no Falcons wearing #7 for their missing comrade on the CFCI List (Convicted Felon Currently Incarcerated)?

Why the hell not, evidently we honor anyONE for anyTHING thesedays.

Because that’s sooooo last year.

Two words sum up this “tribute” crap…Sean Taylor…!!!

Just when I had forgotten about that “gangsta…you had to bring his name up again…I’m still waiting for a National Holiday on Sean Taylor’s birthday…jeesh!!!

I know what you are getting at but using the comparison of the death of Sean Taylor to Mike Vick’s incarceration is probably not the right way to get your point across

Just saw P. Manning warming up. Someone please tell me this Gene Upshaw tribute is only for one game. He has His GU patch on one side, Lucas Oil Stadium patch on the other side and the Captain patch above it. I never thought you could make the Colt uni look trashy.
BTW Ravens looked great in the white jersey and black pants (I am not a fan of the “All-Blacks”) and wonder if they will wear the Black Jersey with white pants.

The Colts have more crap on their jerseys than I can imagine. Screenshot in a sec. PS- Upshaw is all year, baby.

I think a “Colts” wordmark below the shield is all that’s missing on this.

Is anyone else just sick and tired of all these GU patches cluttering up the uni’s? I mean a lot of teams already have a patch, or a tribute patch, or a stadium patch or an anniversary patch, and then they throw these huge ass GU patches on their uni’s and it looks repulsive. Ascetically, this year is going to be terrible.

to add to the colts uni troubles joe addai is having sleeve stripe problems already in the first quarter…i’m working right now and don’t have screen grab capability so if somebody could help me out

i meant shoulder stripe
