I’m willing to be wrong on this — I’d welcome it, actually — but why does Novak Djokovic have a zipper on his collar? Isn’t that what that green thing is? A zipper tab? Why? Does he suffer from overheating clavicles? Do the sleeves come off so he can go all Rafael Nadal on everybody?
Oh, and for those of you wondering about the Colorado shoulder and pants thingers, they didn’t look too bad. Well, not as bad as this, at least. — Bryan

Here is the above shirt with the zipper open…it appears to be a zipper that reveals a mesh layer, i am guessing to add ventilation to the shirt. why the shoulder? no idea. maybe there is some benefit to keeping the zipper along a preexisting seem in the shirt, rather than adding a new one.

Put me down in the “thought Colorado looked ridiculous and Oregon-like” column. I hope that the team has a poor record this season, so as to reduce the likelihood of any other teams adopting the look.

This is an interesting 2-part look at the upcoming NHL 3rd jerseys this season. The images are based on second-hand descriptions, but they are interesting. I like most of what I see, compared to last year\’s league-wide rollout. Kudos to Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Montreal, and Buffalo.

the drawstrings on all the 3rd jerseys are annoying. there’s no gap that makes them functional, they’re there just to be there.
#12 by J on 09.01.08 11:26 am |
I’ve actually seen a similar thing on some sweatshirts that our football team has, but the reason for them appeared to deal with an iPod. You could snake the headphones down through the hole, thus having the cord and actual iPod concealed mostly within your sweatshirt but the earbuds free to go to your ears…No idea why Novak has it though.
#13 by Teebz on 09.01.08 11:53 am |
Chad said:
Boston, NY Islanders, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis are the only teams with the drawstrings. Since NHL players differ in size from Scott Gomez to Zdeno Chara, the drawstrings allow for a more comfortable fit in the neck and shoulder areas when tied properly. When tied tight, the jersey fits like a normal jersey. When tied loosely, the jersey allows for a little give in the shoulder areas, allowing greater movement.
But the key is when tied properly.
#14 by E_Ro on 09.01.08 12:03 pm |
most of those NHL thirds are graphical representations of someone’s (who claims to have seen them) descriptions of what they look like… NHL 09 comes out on 9/11/08. I assume we’ll find out then.

If you actually try on an authentic RBK Edge, or authentic sweater from the last few years, tying the draw string doesn’t help tighten it down at all. I am pretty certain it’s purely aesthetic nowadays, like stirrups in baseball. Though it wouldnt surprised me if the RBK Edge spec sheet said otherwise. (10% faster!)

Reebok has only produced authentic jerseys with lace-up collars in the styles of the Atlanta Thrashers home jersey, the NY Rangers home jersey, the Minnesota Wild home jersey, both NY Islanders jerseys, both Phoenix Coyotes jerseys, both Boston Bruins jerseys, and both Calgary Flames jerseys.
That’s 11/60 jerseys. While it might be aesthetic, it’s still traditional on the Rangers’ and Bruins’ jerseys, so it serves some purpose. Just not a functional purpose. ;o)
I refuse to wear the Rbk EDGE jerseys, so I can’t say for certain how they fit, but the old Oilers’ alternate that I have (made by CCM) fits completely different depending on whether the jersey is tied properly or left loose.

The Isles also wore laces from their start into the late 70’s. I think the switch to a regular V neck probably came with improved materials that wouldn’t tear that that vulnerable spot on a uniform.
The old Laces were truly functional. The laces of the latest uni era, however, have a piece of material behind the laces – if you tie it tight, the material bunches at the neck. If you “loosen it up, you ‘ll only get “so much” additional wiggle room – much less than the ld sweater design would offer.
It is with this in mind that I think the new laces are absolutely nothing but fashion – an attempt to “keep some tradition” in the new design.
After all, the slimmer fit of the cool flow stuff actually harkens back to hockey sweater fits of the 70’s

Someone can check this, but UCLA’s blue has always been…variable. Over the past decade or so I’ve seen the BASEBALL team wear essentially the same uni, varying from year to year, using navy and gold, royal and gold, powder and gold…and seen all three hats available for sale during the year they were worn.
If fact, I think in various college years (fall to spring), the football team wore light powder bue, the basketball team that “dark sky blue” and the baseball team navy or royal (depending on the year).

It just dawned on me that “Ucla” is written on the helmet like a word rather than the acronym that it is. Shouldn’t it be all caps all the time?

who wouldn’t root for the home team in their classic unis vs that pete carroll team

Hmmm, stir in Colorado’s new “textured” panels and it all looks real derivative of ROAD WARRIOR(the Mel Gibson film, not the wrestlers) and the endless parade of combat video games. Football as living x-box. “Well, that’s what kids today LIKE.”

I just found a “authentic” of that jersey (tackle twill numbers anyway) at our local All American Sports Fan store. It was on clearance and in my size, so I HAD to buy it.

Yeah, that wasn’t bad, I guess. It’s the “diamond plate” and the two extraneous helmets that really took it over the top. For me, anyway.

ucla is selling game-worn jerseys like a lot of schools do but i’m not sure i’ve ever seen a football jersey with the crotch snap. it looks extremely uncomfortable.
